Has anyone out there been able to maintain a lc lifestyle during prenancy?? How was it? Did you loose or maintain? Or did you only gain a little? I read that even if you are clinically obese you should gain at least 15 pounds. My last 2 pregnancies I gained 20+ pounds. I am still holding on to pounds gained from pregnancy and the depo shot!!
Can some one please just give me some idea of your experience lcing during pregnancy??
Thanks in advance

Ms sisier-in-law did Atkins during pregnancy. Don't know the exact details but she said she was always sncking on peanuts. Then her son is born and they find he's deathly allergic to peanuts. I don't know if there's a connection or not . Just thouht it was an interesting thought.

It is not recommended that anyone try to LOSE weight during pregnancy. Nor if you are trying to get pregnant.
There's no reason to eat sugars and simple starches but you can eat a "lower carb" diet which includes lots of vegetables of all colours, fruits and WHOLE grains, as well as meats and other protein sources and dairy. The less processed food you eat, the better.

Thanks Ginga and Barb,
I am not neccesarily trying to loose during pregnancy but more so establish a healthy lifestyle so that I won't over gain and blame it on pregnancy. I know I should gain weight for a healthy baby not dispute there but I just need to know some comments from people that have actually done it before. Are the cravings so outrageous that it makes it hard to maintain a healthy way of eating.
My last 2 pregnancies I ate whatever whenever with my only restriction being that I wouldn't get up at night and eat. This time I want to be more health concious to prevent myself from gaining unnecessary weight.
Thanks again

as always, this is something you want to discuss with your doctor
*legal disclaimer now taken care of*
I work with a lady who just had her 3rd. She did LOWER carb (big difference) and did wonderfully. She ate tons of veggies, higher carb veggies and fruits(go for those peaches!) and WHOLE grain breads and pastas. She was very careful to avoid ALL processed sugars and startches.
What weight she gained she quickly lost after the birth of her son.
Be sensible and you'll be fine. As for cravings, find a good healthy alternative to the junk food. It's not good for your or your little one.

I am now 31 weeks pregnant and have been following Atkins maint. phase during the whole time. So far I have had a gain of 15 lbs. My doctors are very pleased with my menu and how my weight gain is going so yep, it can be done. ;)

Finally site that had some understanding of what I was looking for / Wave
I had just found out that I'm gonna be a mommy! which is GREAT> but now the worry of the lifestyle I have chosen for over a year now is making me wonder.
I do understand some guidlines as to what NOT to eat and what can still be eaten with out gaining weight. But my confusion is the Milk end of it..... I had asked a doc and He wasn't aware of the milk on the market today put out by hood, Has anyone gone thru a full term and did not drink reg milk? should I work that into my diet once again? I know no one can tell me What to do but opions count in todays age..... its all about experience.
I know for myself I will still maintain a lc living with some exeptions to fruit but still worried about reg milk vs lc milk.
Would love to hear back on any thought or advice for a Happy occasion.

Hi LeillaBug,
I don't really drink milk as I am lactose intolerant but I do take a couple of TUMS a day for some of my calcium input. I also eat yogurt and cheese. I don't know if this will help but you should start a journal so that you can hangout with the pregnant lcers. There are actually quite a few ranging in pregnancy from beginning to end.

I haven't had real milk in my life to drink and I have had 3 pregnancies that went fine without it. This time is my first time LC though. I do eat yogurt and cheeses and use soymilk for my milk. I wouldn't worry about it so much though as long as you are getting in all your vitamins. www.fitday.com can help you to keep track if you click on the report tab after plugging in what you ate. Best of luck to you!

Milk isn't the "superdrink" that it's cracked up to be. In fact, there are studies out there that suggest milk drinkers have a greater fracture/osteoporosis risk in the long-term. There are more age-related fractures here in the good ol US than in countries where people never drink milk.
Milk is NOT a good calcium source - the phosphorous and proteins in the milk inhibit calcium absorption.
Take a good calcium supplement while pregnant and a prenatal vitamin that's easy on your stomach. Tums are NOT a good calcium supplement - Here's a quote:
"Are Tums and similar antacids good courses of calcium?
The source of calcium in Tums and similar antacids is limestone (calcium carbonate). Limestone is the cheapest form of calcium available. It is very effective at neutralizing stomach acid but it is an inferior source of calcium since it is not absorbed as well as most other forms. Furthermore, because of the danger of a rebound effect from taking too many antacids, which can make a stomach problem worse, antacids should never be taken on a continual basis. Tums is therefore not a good source of calcium. Tums also does not contain Vitamin D, which is necessary for calcium absorption and enhances the bone building process. It also does not contain magnesium, phosphorus and boron, which are necessary for healthy bone."
I have been LCing while breastfeeding and started at maintenance carb levels. I've been losing slowly and steadily and my son has had no ill effects from it.
Hope this helps! If I get pregnant again, I am definitely following this way of eating for the duration. I'm still trying to lose the "baby" weight and he's already 2-1/2 (I gained WAY too much on a high-carb diet while pg)

If you think about it, milk is basically for babies. No other animal is drinking milk past the age of infancy. I don't think its so critical to drink milk if you take care to get your calcium and other nutrients for other food sources.
I was talking to a french girl last year and I learned that adult europeans do not regularly drink milk. She really looked at me funny when I sais I could really go for a cold glass of milk...
Just my 2 cents worth...

when I was pregnant my Dr. reccomemnded I eat at a very minimu 75 of carbs a day but would prefer 100 mostly fruits and veggis. There is a proven link that if you consume lots of peanuts of PB during pregnencay your baby has like an 80% chance of being allergic to peanuts...
