Welcome to the Protein Power Plan daily hangout thread, feel free to pull up a chair, have a cuppa your favorite beverage, along with some water, and join our discussions.

This will be our daily hangout spot, our little cafe, if you will, where we can come in and unwind, share our thoughts with one another about how we are doing with our low carbing, our families, our joys, sorrows and struggles.

A place to vent, giggle, joke and give a hug or a tissue to another. Feel free to browse the other threads for informative subjects and if you can't find something, please feel free to ask away right here as well.

Good Morning!

Hi Elaine.. well there has been some talk over the last few weeks, that posting a daily thread each day, makes it confusing for visitors or those that need to find info quickly, using the search feature, because of all the threads to meander thru, so after having this issue come up several times, and it was suggested that instead of a day to day thread, that we just have one thread that we come to talk daily, and start other threads for specific topics, such as vitamin supplementation that Bawdy began the other day here.

So, instead of looking for a thread for the day, just subscribe to this one, and this will be our daily check in spot, let it all hang out spot, vent spot etc. :)

I had to fix the graphic in the above, since I let the ATM machine EAT my check card a cple of weeks ago, I have a temp card that only allows me to use the atm machines, but not pay bills with it, and this morning, my web page is gone!! I cant find the blinkin' number to call the web domain and let them know of a different cc to bill in the interim. Can anyone say DOH!

I have a busy day ahead of me, but a 2.5 hour break this afternoon between sessions (unless I get a last minute call) that I am hoping to squeeze in a curves workout!! :)

Dont look at my fitday from yesterday.. whoa.. carb blowout.. like bawdy says.. dont try this at home folks! But I will be honest with you.. I ENJOYED it.. LOL!

Have a great Tuesday!

Love and Laughter,
Dawn

posted by Robinbebe earlier this week...
I have not posted here in a while, I have mainly lurked. I am currently at about 228 lbs. I have hovered between that and 230 lbs since mid April. I know LC works, but I seem to have gotten into a bit of a rut food wise. I mainly do Atkins and Protein Power, but have customized it to work for me, and thus far it has worked.

I have read so many things about the various spin-offs of LC dieting. South Beach intrigues me, but it sounds like a LF diet with some extra protein and less carbs. I have also looked at some LC programs where you don't count your veggies as carbs, and are allowed limited amounts each day. I have also thought about doing an induction, as I never did initially.

I have recently cut my hours at work. While working, I ate out at least one, if not more, meals per day. I think being at home more will help with this; perhaps that will be all I need.

Any suggestions?

Robin

When you get to a spot and its not working for some time it is a wise person that makes some adjustments! Wendy listed some dif. plans for you on the day that you mentioned the above... and some of us have found that taking some time off of lc'ing.. has been the necessary tool to jumpstart or jolt our bodies into letting go of the weight again... when I have done that, it worked for me.. I however, still watched my calories, just changed up what I was eating a bit..allowed some higher carb foods, and I did this for a week while camping. Came back, and WHOOSH..

I have noticed that it works for me to do it more on a weekly basis..however THIS past week, I did it one too many days in a row what with going to the amusement park yesterday.

You would be so proud of me.. I went on a roller coaster and didnt lose my lunch! LOL.. I did pass on the bigger ones, that go upside down or fly you like superman however.. but it was a start!

Hey everyone! I think this is a great idea to have an ongoing daily thread like this. That way everything is contained in one place and we can just pick up where we last read. I'm also excited to see more new faces posting on our board. As I am currently refocusing myself to the basics of Protein Power, it is helpful to have more people ask questions so that I can remember all that I need to know.

Weight is at 148 today. TOM is still to blame. I just need to remember that my weight has always gone down once it leaves.

Dawn-Thanks for the idea of the "Java Room". I love it!

Oh, Miss? Do you have any cappacino here, or just plain java? How about some virtual pastries to go with it?

On second thought, I think I'll pass. The second glass of wine is beckoning.

Still holding steady at 154. My size 10s are now getting loose. Not even close to an 8 yet, but a loose 10 is fine by me.

Who am I kidding? I'm way too exhausted from work to type. I know it sounds like whining, but I had to work 5 days in the office last week, and the same this week. It's just that I get up at 4:00 am, leave for work by 5:15 to 5:30 (yes, it takes that long to get myself ready, get the animals in and out and fed, make my lunch, etc.), and don't get home until 7:30 or 8:00. It makes for a long day. It takes almost an hour and a half to drive to work (combination of major construction along the way and dropping off the dog at day care). I'll have to catch up on the weekends.

Hope everyone's doing well. I'm sure we'll get accustomed to our new home in no time!

One mocha cappacino please! ahhh warm soothing chocolate with a big dose of caffeine!!!!!!!!!!!!

So Dawn, when you went the other way so to speak with the carbs, afterwards did you get bad cravings?? I had been pretty liberal with the dh's peanutbutter mnm's a few days ago and I am STILL craving chocolate!! We have been burning the days up and I realize that some of it is from fatigue.

Ok you guys, what do you eat, or take (supplement-wise) to keep more energised??????? :help:

See you all back in our new home!!! (Bawdy you need to pick out some furniture, it is a bit bare here!!!) :D

Hello to Elaine and Wendy!

WendyOH
Tue, Jun-29-04, 21:13
Yay, I am now officially 3 drumsticks!!

Lissette-I have a confession about what I've been doing lately to stay energized. I've recently come upon something that makes me feel so good, I almost feel like I shouldn't be doing it. I've been drinking Fruit2O energy drink. It's a bottled water flavored with Splenda and enriched with vitamins. It also contains ginseng, caffeine, and guarana. The first day I drank one, I was soooo happy and didn't take a nap for the first time all summer. I couldn't go to sleep till after midnight and had the most refreshing sleep and woke up totally energized the next day. I have drank one every day since. I looked up about guarana and realized that is what I am reacting so favorably to. It's an herb commonly used in Brazil. It has a caffeine-like response in energizing you, but it doesn't come in one surge. It is released in small amounts over a much longer amount of time, so I have tons of energy for hours and hours. I just have to make sure that I don't drink it after around 3 pm so I can get to sleep. Other things that it supposedly does is decrease cravings, acts as an aphrodisiac, contains a chemical similar to chocolate, and helps maintain weight. I am slightly worried that I am going to become dependent on it, but I feel nothing but positives from it. I do not feel jittery, and I drink one per day, no more. And it's so nice to actually sleep well at night and not take naps. Anyone else know anything about this or think I should be concerned?

simplydawn
Tue, Jun-29-04, 22:58
oh.. that drink sounds like it has nothing but good and positive bene's .. will have to try it myself, and thanks for the heads up re: timing of the drink.. I havent been sleeping well really, and getting up at the crack of dawn...

LOL..I guess I meet myself coming and going.. LOL..:::::::::snorts Lily tomlin style ::::::::::

Carb up yesterday: I didnt THINK I felt moody or cravings..in fact woke up today.. and began the day off good..until I blew it with the rotten day I had, I mean either my moon is in retrograde or it completely left the solar system, you name it, it happened to me today..right down and including dropping a glass of water, and some spillage into the keyboard. AM now using another keyboard. End of THAT story....

Bawdy.. It is draining to work those hours and drive that kind of commute and so frustrating when its due to construction, and you know how long it normally takes...I wonder if one day I will be sharing that I am wearing a loose size 10? Thats neat.. very neat... ( yes.. I know...)

Well, off to bed to twist the sheets in knots as I toss and turn..but gotta give it my best effort .. makes hubby mad to see the bed destroyed..LOL.. he loves his sheets TUCKED.. I like mine EVERYWHERE!

Oh. I got a henna tattoo at the park yesterday.. on my inner thigh, by my knee to do a practice run for when I reach the goal of onderland.. I like it.

Good morning. :)
Have to check out the Fruit 20 (that's Fruit-two -oh, if anyone's not familiar with it),they have it at my grocery store. I am still dealing with post surgery fatigue.
I have Thurs-Mon off and want to try to eat clean and GET SOME EXERCISE!!!
I can sympathize with Bawdy's commute. I drive 45-55 min twice a day, it's worse during school season with the buses, etc. I've been apartment shopping and hope to move closer to work and a 30 min commute.
Dawn, this is fun to have one thread. Thanks for starting this!
Hi Lissette and Wendy

Wed, June 30

As always, I am way too ruled by the scale....but today's going to be a good one b/c it said 146.5!!!! That is what I used to weigh prior to doing CAD for 3 months. I guess I didn't gain that much with all the dessert-eating I was doing, but it is super exciting to have my clothes feel good again, ya know? It's amazing what a couple pounds can do. I was totally content before maintaining at this weight and if I can do so again, at least for awhile to prove that I still can, I will be happy.

Today I have a meeting about teaching summer school, which starts next week. I had really bad dreams that they assigned me to teaching early elementary reading and language arts, which would totally freak me out. Last year, I got what I wanted, middle school math. You wouldn't think that that would be a strongly requested subject and grade level, so hopefully I will be fine.

Dawn-Hope you have a much better day today!

Elaine-Tell us all about the exercising you are doing on your days off:)

Bawdy-I'm laughing as I imagine you standing up and holding onto your pants for dear life so that they don't fall off:) Your schedule and commute does sound very stressful. Stop by when you can.

Good Morning Everyone!

Dawn - thanks for doing the thread this way! I think this does make it easier, and no one has to start a new thread each day!

Bawdy - sounds like you need some Fruit20! I hope thinks settle down for you with work. Loose 10's sound wonderful! I like loose things, but a pair of tight jeans in a smaller size can sure make ya feel skinny!

My dh is up helping my parents move. Last night on the way there they lost a wheel when the axle broke on my dad's truck. Fortunately they didn't cause an accident. I couldn't sleep, so I cleaned out a bookcase.

Well, I'm cleaning my son's room today, he's 8, and it's a dissaster, but I'm armed with garbage bags! I can't wait to see floor! After I get done I'm going to go buy me a reward! Hmm, maybe some makeup?

Morning all!
Wendy, thanks for the heads up on the fruit 20, there must be different kinds, there is one kind at my Walmart, grape flavored, but just spring water and splenda???? Where do you get yours at???? When I read your thread I dashed to my fridge, but while this is called the same it alas is not!! :(
Glad to see your wieght is down!! I have not stepped on the scales for alittle while, I KNOW that I am up, I started today with my egg whites and l fat bacon with alittle pj cheese. I will be heading out the door in a sec since the hay is ready to rake, suggestions, should I drop my cals down to 1000 to get back on track?????? :help:

Song good luck with the ds's room! My son is 10 and is SLOWLY getting better, but I KNOW what you are up against! :)

Elaine,Bawdy,Let's be the fatigue girls!!! ready one to three ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ     Oh with your nodding off in traffic to me on the tractor, IT CAN'T be a good thing, We had better stock up on the Wendy's miracle drink!!! :agree:

Dawn, may the moon be turning soon to your favor with another woosh and better days!!! What does your henna tatoo look like? I think that they are cool esp. since they do fade! My DH would just Have a fit If I ever came home with one!

Well I better go! Have a Great day everyone!!!

The exercise plan is some walking, a new Winsor Pilates tape for older beginners, a new aerobics tape for those over 50 (just need a change from Leslie Sansone for a while) some weight training and much needed cleaning of the apt. Also included is copious amts of doing nothing by the pool and actually getting in and swimming if the water is warm enough. :)

BawdyWench
Wed, Jun-30-04, 13:13
OK, let's all go out and buy Wendys Fruit20 energy drink and compare notes. I got through a day and a half this week before realizing that I have to do a full 5 days in the office again this week. At least we have Monday off.

I'll need to stop at the grocery store probably tomorrow on the way home from work, and I'll look for the drink. Would it be by the flavored waters or the "diet" section of the store?

WendyOH
Wed, Jun-30-04, 13:36
It's by the flavored waters. There are many different flavors, but this "special" one is called citrus energy burst. I think part of the flavor is from the guarana, b/c in Brazil, they use it to help flavor a lot of their diet drinks. It supposedly takes about an hour to kick in. I feel it right away, but it's the caffeine at first I think, and I feel a lot better once the other stuff gets going. I'm hooked:)

WendyOH
Wed, Jun-30-04, 13:47
Song-Yes, you definitely need to treat yourself after tackling that bedroom!

Elaine-Have fun with the new tapes and the pool. I'm about to do some lazing by the pool myself in couple minutes. My new Winsor Pilates tapes just came in the mail the other day. Unfortunately, they mailed the resistance band separately, so I haven't tried most of the yet. I did do the upper body one though, which suggests 1 or 2 lb weights, which I do not have. I did it without, and I still felt it a bit:)

Lissette-Yes, there are lots of Fruit2O, but the energy one is the only one with the extra "stuff" in it. I find mine at Meijer. They carry Fruit2O at Walmart, but don't have the energy one there. I also went to the website and it can be ordered online.

Bawdy-I'm curious to how you guys will respond to it. My DBF feels NOTHING from it, but he is a huge coffee drinker. I wasn't drinking any caffeine before this, so maybe I feel it more than others would. I don't think it's the caffeine that I really like, though, b/c caffeine shoots me up and brings me right back down. The guarana is different. It keeps me going all day long, in more balanced, steady way.

The pool beckons. Talk to you all later!

hello all how have you been?

WendyOH
Wed, Jun-30-04, 16:33
Yikes!!!! I am seriously disheartened here. I was doing some surfing on the main board here and came across the thread about combining lowcarb and WW points. Someone posted a link to the amount of points in various restaurant items. Many of the restaurants also included total calories and carbs. All I can say is no wonder I gain weight when I go out to eat, even when I think I am making good choices.

A nice 10 oz sirloin as I so often get is in the ballpark of 500 calories, and that's the lean piece of meat.

The really sad one was when I found my favorite cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory, which I had a couple times while doing CAD. It has 900 calories and 90g carbs. No wonder I felt like I was going to explode afterwards and gained. I'm lucky I only gained 3 lbs in 3 months the way I was eating those reward meals. I probably averaged over 2000 calories each dinner along. Gross!!

Ok, just had to get that off my chest. It doesn't seem like there is anything SAFE to get while going out:(

Wed, Jun-30-04, 16:38
I've been reading with interest the comments on the energy drink. Have any of you tried taking guarana supplements? I thought there were such things, and if the drinks seem to help, maybe the supplements would be good, too?

I've had brain fuzz and poozly energy all day, wish I had one of these drinks at hand! LOL

Lene,
When I looked up guarana, I found that there are sites that sell it in supplement form. There are strict dosage recommendations to maximize effects and avoiding overdoing it as well.

lené
Wed, Jun-30-04, 16:51
Hmmm, will have to look into this. I want to give the drink a try, if I can find it. <g> I think a drink my son loves to take to his computer LAN get-togethers (BAWLS is what it is called) also has the guarana, but I think his drink also had lots of sugar. <g>

Dawn, thanks for starting up the thread. It sure was nice to catch up without having to jump between several different threads. Stick with things and you will be back at things soon. Remember how before your camping your were battling and then after things just started working? I am to afraid to get a tatoo. THe thought of sticking needles in me unnerves me. It was bad enough having an epidural when I had kids and unfortunately the last one the doctor stuck me three time before he got it right.

Bawdy, hopefully the traffic will get better. How long is the construction project for? I know in Wisconsin summer is construction season. Oh, yeah size 10??? I would love to see those numbers in my closet ( Well, I do have an 8 from years ago. It was a classic dress which I wore before I got married. I keep it there as a dream. Yes, it is black, just not little.)

Song, I love the way a tight new pair of jeans makes me feel. I keep asking my husband if how I look in the mirror is a skinny as I think. He keeps telling me I'm getting skinny. I love this feeling

My official weigh in is tomorrow but I have been weighing more frequently because I upped my carbs and I want to keep a handle on things. Today I was a 167 which I was excited about since TOM came last night. I am feeling really bloated and crampy so that made me feel good.

I started a seven day cheat free challenge. I have been doing well with this and really feel like I am in control again. I have been working on all my goals for this week so I hope it pays off. If the scale doesn't show anything that is okay because I gave myself a kick in the butt.

Dawn, my friend recommended an essential oil for my cramping. I think it is called Witch's devil. Do you use them or know much about them? She gave me a small sample I think it helps some, but I am not sure where to get them. Just wondering if you have any info?

Hope everyone else is well. Will try to visit tomorrow leaving town on Friday for the holiday.

Ladies, I have tried the Lime Fruit H2O and it was too sweet for me. I can't believe I am saying that but it was. I really enjoy Crystal Light. I was out reading another thread and they were discussing that Crystal Light has carbs in it for the powder. My powder reads 0 carbs but I wasn't sure if they were counting a carb because it is sweetened with asparatame. Any thoughts? I posted on the Atkins thread but have no answer. Since I am trying to watch my counts I wanted some info. Thanks

HI all.. just a quick float thru...It's almost midnite, and I have a busy day tomorrow. Today WAS mucho better on the richter scale, I think I have been mooned, I mean, I got my moon back.. I dont know what I mean.. LOL..

I probably wont be on much tomorrow, maybe if I get up early, I will catch up and chatter some more... but if not... I can see in my crystal ball that it won't be until friday sometime before I really get to share.. and catch up on the individual comments etc.. My first client tomorrow is at 10 am..the last one ends at 7:30... so.. will be long and busy.. which is profitable.. yes! :)

OH! I got tickets to go see Jeff Foxworthy given to me today =) So, gave my son one for his bday gift, and the 3 of us are going Friday evening, he is taping a new show in Atlanta.. he lives over near where we used to live before moving over here.. ( I know there, here and over where means nothing, but short of posting my address or his.. lol.. I used vague descriptive words.. ) anyhow.. he's funny, and it should be a blast.

Talk later, have a bubbly kind of day...

Hello, ladies (and gentlemen?),

I've been a lurker for some time, even before I switched completely over to PP from CALP several months ago. Bawdy Wench may remember me, as she was very helpful in answering a few questions I had back then.

At any rate, I was wondering if anyone could tell me a little about the eatprotein.com Protein Power Discussion Board. I've begun to lurk there as well, and I'm tempted to begin posting with menus, challenges, and so on--but before I do, since I'm so much more familiar with this Web site and all its subforums, I thought I'd ask if anyone has had experience(s) with the community there. They seem to be a very dedicated and detail-oriented crew, which may be what I need. They seem to be knowledgeable too, but I was hoping several of you guys might have some input.

Anyway, thanks in advance--and by the way, I think your Java Room innovation is lovely! I think you've paved the way for those who haven't been a regular member of the support group to both join and post separate query threads. It's nice!

Best, Sona

Therese-I think anytime an artificial sweetener is in powder form, whether it be Splenda or Aspartame, it contains a small amount of carbs. I remember when I used to have powder Splenda, the ingredients listed maltodextrin, which is obviously a sugar. The liquid form does not have to have the same additions, and therefore does not have any carbs.

Hi Sona! I remember you from my brief interlude with CAD:) I cannot be much help to you about the eatprotein site. I have visited there b/c I think it contains a wealth of information, especially when you are just starting on Protein Power. I have only been a visitor, though, and never posted. In the "bootcamp" area, I think they have a daily support thread, and also a place where people record their menus and how much they are exercising. I am sure they would love for you to jump right in. You are also more than welcome to post here as well:)

Hi Sona. I found them to be very knowledgeable but they stick pretty close to the plan. Some of us here need to tweak things a bit. I'd go out and post a few questions, see what feedback you get. :)

OK, goal one has been met of my five day goals: I just did my new aerobics for over 50 tape. Since I am only 3 months post surgery, it was a good workout, just a change from WATP. Remaining goals: drink water, eat clean, do my pilates tape, go swimming.

Wendy, I bought the fruit2o plus, the CVS stores around here carry it, not the grocery store, they only have the regular. I had half a bottle since I took some excedrin for a sinus migraine this AM and that also has caffiene. It helped with my workout :)

Well, I got most of Chauncey's room cleaned! I was sure tired of picking up legos and light bright pegs. I had Chauncey help me when he got home. I did work on it all day yesterday, and I hauled a lot of to the second hand store, I have one more big bag to drop off, but I want to go through another bookcase first.

I was so busy cleaning and doing laundry yesterday that I wasn't really very hungry during the day. I've been eating hamburger paties smothered with mushrooms and swiss cheese. Mmm, just hits the spot!

Lissette - it's funny, light bright pegs and legos is what I always picked up off my older boys floors when they were little, they also had a ton of action figures. Chauncey prefers hot wheel cars and chevron cars. It sure is nice to see the carpet in there. I told him I'd make him new curtains with fish fabric. I have the fabric, so I guess I'll need to get to sewing.

Hello everyone. It has been a busy morning. I did manage to get a 20 minute run in before I started the chase. Now I need to make brownies for my son's summer program tomorrow, finish the laundry, clean the house, pack some clothes for the weekend and finish my shorts I starting sewing this am. To bad I didn't like the Fruit H20 I could use the energy boost.

Weighed in this morning at 166.5 which is great especially since I got TOM this week. I have really been working at meeting my goals I set this week. It seems to be paying off. I feel good just knowing I got myself back on track and now maybe I will start losing again :D

Wendy, thanks for the info on Crystal Light. I try not to rely on it too much and certainly don't want to have any hidden carbs. Oh, I have increased my carb count to 40 carbs and your right. I feel a lot better and it appears that this week I have lost weight. I'll keep an eye on whether this makes it easier to lose weight.

Elaine, good job meeting your goal!!! I know it is a hard choice sometimes but the struggle is worth it in the end. Maybe you could try drinking your water in some fancy glass or something. Personally, I do better when I have a closed container where I can't see how much is left ( I think I mentally psych myself out if I see it that I can't drink that much).

Dawn, hope you get some time for yourself today. Your schedule sounds crazy. How are things with the new office space?? Did he ever call back.

Bawdy, enjoy your holiday off. Hopefully, your not driving anywhere!! Have a margarita for me ( or maybe I will have one too!! CHEERS!!!)

Hello to everyone else, Song, Unity, and anyone else I missed

Hope everyone has a lovely 4th of July. I can't wait to see the fireworks this year. It is the first time in 5 years since I have seen them. Paul my 2nd was terrified and now he seems to have adjusted to the noise level. No other fireworks, it is TOM.

Therese-Glad to hear that 40g carbs is working well for you so far. I actually made the huge jump from 20 to 60, which might sound drastic. When I first made the jump, though, I cut way down on calories (mostly fat) for a few weeks, but was able to keep the weight moving once I added the fat back in. I was always so afraid of what would happen if I were to raise the carbs b/c I wasn't losing on 20, so it seemed counterintuitive that I would lose on more. Keep a close eye on things, and you might even be able to go higher. 60g is perfect for me to get down to a reasonable weight and I do not feel deprived at this level. I can have lots of cottage cheese, fruit several times per day, yogurt, nuts, LC milk, and of course tons of veggies! What else could I possibly want?:) Keep us posted on your progress!

It's hard to believe that the fourth is so close! My parents are bringing down another load of their things, so we'll be unpacking this weekend. I'm planning a barbecue in our backyard for Monday. Our little town is celebrating the 4th on Monday. I'm going to a family reuinion Saturday. I think I'll take some protein bars with me just in case they don't have anything for me to eat.

I bought me two new tops for my reward for cleaning Chauncey's room. They were on sale for $4 each. Can't beat that. I hate to pay a lot for clothes I won't be wearing long. They are a size 18-20 which feels good to me because I was wearing a 26-28 and they were getting tight!

Bawdy - thanks!

I forgot to say, I did my walk this morning. I forced myself to do it, I was so tired, but I did it anyway. 3 miles a day times 5 = 15 miles this week.

Hi everyone!

:: munching on a late lunch ::

Hubby is taking a nap, and I am here online supposedly trying to get directions to the theater for tonites show... we are going to see Jeff Foxworthy..he is taping a new show.. called working man or something like that..It could only take us 45 minutes to get there, then again, with atlanta traffic AND being a holiday weekend, it could take us 2 hours.. so we are gonna leave here around 5 to be on the safe side. The doors to the studio close at 730. We are taking our son, gave him a ticket for his 19th birthday.

We could use some prayers over that kid.. his latest is..he has now moved, and living in a house of a drug addicted older woman, who is on her 28 day rehab, but according to ds its just for formalities, she is not really a druggie, nor are there drugs in that house.

And I just got off the turnip truck..

Office update: Did meet w/ the owner AND the contractor, they are running behind schedule with getting the salon finished, so it may not be until mid august or sept..but it seriously looks like a go, AND he lowered the rent by 300.00! So that is excellent......:) The contractor sees no problem with having a bathroom and a laundry hook up and extra insulation for sound proofing. I also get to choose colors, floor and wall styles and fixtures to some degree..... So..if its meant to be, it will pan out.. which I hope..if not..then the door will close and I wont get stuck some place I dont belong.

Song.. I have some rooms that need to be straightened and cleaned.. I will barter a massage for your cleanup time!! :)

OK, second goal met-went swimming today.
Bawdy, the Tequila has been bought for the weekend. My Bob's Margharita mix is soooo happy!

Dawn, it sounds like things are going your way. I really love comedians, and Jeff Foxworthy is one of my favorites! I wish I could see him in person. Your son sounds like a typical 19 year old. He thinks he's an adult, but there's just so much he doesn't know. Just be grateful that you seem to have a good relationship with him. When I was 19 there was no way I'd be caught dead going somewhere with my parents!

Song, I meant it. You're doing great. I'm sure the walking is helping. If you can get into the habit of exercise, it's a good "catch-22." You start walking, and you feel better, and you feel better, so you want to go walking, etc.

We have a new poster in the forum today; goes by the name Bigshot. Wendy and I have already welcomed him. It sounds like he might need a little advice from time to time, at least to get going. Any advice or kind words would, I'm sure, be appreciated.

Anyone hear from Orang lately? And whatever happened to the Reverend Yeti? Think all us ladies scared him away?

Wendy, whatever are you going to do with all your free time until summer school starts? I'm really envious of teachers, until I think of what you guys do for the rest of the year! No thanks! I'm just glad there are wonderful, patient people like you to teach the kids.

Elaine, keep that mix cold. I bought an extra-large bottle of Jose Cuervo gold. I might even splurge and buy some chips and cheese or salsa. Just a small bag. Hell, it beats my dinner of last night (2 glasses of red wine and half a pack of saltines). No lectures, please. I'll get back to "real" food someday, I promise. In the meantime, my 10s are still loose.

I've been thinking about Wendy's challenge to list 5 things you like about yourself. I didn't answer then, but here goes. I'm serious about all these things, even though they might sound frivolous.

I have a very nice nose. Not too wide, not too narrow, not too long, not too short. Very nice.
I have perfect thumbs. I know, but I do.
I'm honest. It's very hard for me to lie, so I don't. This doesn't mean I'm hurtful and tell the harsh truth all the time. I'm of the old adage, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."
I'm loyal. I've never cheated on my husband. I've never even come close. Or even wanted to come close. As a friend, if you ask me to do something for you, I'll do it.
I'm a very hard worker. I want things done well. I don't leave jobs half done or half-a$$ed done. At least not anything that matters.
All in all, I think I'm a good person. (Flashback to the movie "Monster" in which Charlize Theron says that she's a good person, right after murdering a couple men!)

On the other hand, thinking about the "what I hate about me" list, if I could magically change one thing physically about me, it would be to give me a flat tummy. Even as a child I had a round pot belly and I've always hated it.

(I can imagine all of you nudging each other and saying, "Geez, what's with Bawdy tonight?!?!?!?)

yawns..its 1 am.. hubby just went to work, which means I can now go to bed, without the snoring and the snooze alarm.. :)

Been thinking and missing orang too.... wish she had a journal...

gonna be lazy and copy from my journal:

Jeff Foxworthy..Got there at 6:15.. doors opened ..or were supposed to open at 6....was told that we could get in line, and be considered standby.. cause they were already full.. Apparently they gave free tickets off the internet, and it was a first come first serve thing.. and I heard that they started lining up at 4pm... I like him too, but not enough to stand there at 4pm til 7 even if I had known about it! We stood there til 8.. and the doors closed, without us being able to get in..we were like ....... 10 feet from the door by that point! I guess if we had gotten there even just 20 minutes earlier.

How VERY disappointing.. kind of a true finish to that kind of a week.. murphys law.. moon in retrograde ( dennys meal moons over my hammy/homey!) and thank goodness we had found a free parking spot, not paying 10 bucks to park, that would have added insult to injury... We were disappointed, but there wasnt a thing we could do about it...

But, on the good side, we did get to have dinner again with son..( well WAFFLE HOUSE 'dinner?' ) and had a very good heart to heart, and called him on some things, and just laid it out for him.. in a non threatening manner, cause I am truly concerned about where he is living.. i wouldnt even put my dog in there as a kennel!! It is AWFUL.. I mean gross/filthy... etc.. you name it..no a/c.. broken windows.... and ..well.. trailer trash to the extreme. its not even funny..and I think he is waking up a bit ..finally..after a year of screwing up out there... he is supposed to be coming by tomorrow after he is finished work.. I hope so. will see. .wont count on it tho... if he does..he does..........

Who's doing fireworks? I love fireworks.. and a really good display can and has moved me to tears.. I think the best one I have seen in the last few years that did that..was down on Ft Benning.. and it was after 9/11..and emotions and feelings were high and raw.. we had relatives there, being from staten island... as many of us did.

I like your list Bawdy. I admire your tenacity and honesty..as those are key things with myself as well, and I do have a high standard, and I hold those around me to them as well.

I will hop over and say hi to the big shot.. its good to post memos here so we keep an eye on those popping in like that..:)

5 things Dawn likes about Dawn:

1. Willing to learn and try new things.
2. I am hospitable.
3. I am creative. ( just look at the weight thats been listed on my drivers license for the last 15 yrs! LOL)
4. I have gorgeous green eyes.
5. I am an excellent Massage therapist and teacher.

I dont say the last in a cocky manner.. I truly say it in a voice of thankfulness and incredible awe at where I am today in comparison. I have always exceled at whatever I set my mind/hands to.. but this time it's been different. I am where I belong. I am honored that I get to be part of facilitating other's healing journeys. And I do not take it for granted.

What would I would change about me?

I am still working on the 'be anxious for nothing' part of me. I know it's all about perfect timing, and I have greatly improved on rushing or forcing things to happen...but I still have a long ways to go.

Body wise: My breasts- uplift and inspire.. lets hear it for uplift and inspire, instead of droop and drag.. .:) Or hell.. at least get them both to be the same size!

Guess I had better try to get some shut eye.. I did schedule a 90 minute client tomorrow cause dh was supposed to only work the morning .. but now he wont be home til late aftn/evening..

Dawn, that really stinks about the show. I guess that's the problem with open seating.

To everyone, I just wanted to mention that I've been helping out BigShot and just posted a food chart and a daily food intake chart that I've used in the past with PP. The daily chart divides the food up throughout the day, as recommended by the Eades. I think it's Post #6 in the thread. They are Microsoft Word docs, and you all might find them helpful. Just a thought.

I'll catch up later. Off to make some coffee and get both eyes open.

Bawdy, since you have a big bottle of Jose Cuervo, here's a recipe from the Low Carb and Lovin It show on food network:

1 jalapeno pepper, seeded
1 clove garlic
1 cup tequila
1 cup teriyaki sauce
1/4 cup sesame oil, optional
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
3 1/2 pounds London broil
Cilantro leaves, for garnish

In a blender, combine all ingredients except London broil. Process until smooth. Place London broil in a non-reactive container and pour marinade over top, turning it to coat. Refrigerate for at least 4 to 6 hours before cooking.
Preheat grill to high.

Place London broil on white hot grill, and cook for 4 to 5 minutes on each side, flipping the steak 4 times (cooking time will vary with thickness of the steak).

Let steak rest for at least 10 minutes before thinly slicing against the grain of the meat and on a bias for wide but thin slices. Garnish with fresh cilantro.

I'll try that. Since there's only one of me, I'll probably cut the recipe at least in half.

Here's another good marinade for beef:

2 Tbsp olive oil
2 Tbsp soy sauce
1 tsp cumin (ground)
1 tsp coriander (ground)
1 tsp chopped garlic

That's it. This will be enough for about 1 1/2 pounds of beef, believe it or not.

Make plenty, because it warms up well. I just set some out to marinate for dinner tonight.

Hi everyone. I woke up with a fever and sore throat today. I've been as high as 101 degrees, but am back down to 99 degrees now and feeling a bit better. I have no idea why I am sick in the middle of summer. I haven't even started teaching summer school (starts Tuesday), so I couldn't have gotten it from kids. Blah! This is no fun. I did have a good time last night though, seeing Red White and Boom. It was wonderful. Saw it with DBF. Tonight I was supposed to go to a patriotic concert, but that's not looking too promising:( Just wanted to check in and say hello.

P.S. It's very cool that many of you also wrote a list of the things you like about yourself. It helps me learn a lot more about you, and hopefully helps us remember what's most important. Have a good weekend!

OK, since I am having a LC margharita (or two-damn these things are good :o )as I write, here are 5 things I like about me.
1. I have great eyes (brown).
2. I'm funny and make people feel better when they are ill at ease or depressed (wish it would work on myself  )
3. I went from being divorced with no job 10 years ago to working in the Pension area at a major mutual fund company with Series 6 and 63 financial licenses. I am taking care of myself.
4. I am climbing out of some major debt I inflicted on myself.
5. I have a good thick head of hair. Somedays I just have a good thick head :daze:

Wendy, I hope you feel better. Dawn, I'm sorry your show didn't happen last night.

My mom and I took my two youngest to a family reunion in Idaho today. It was about a 2 hour drive each way. We had fun seeing everyone and sharing stories. We stopped for lunch at a cute little diner and I had a low carb cheeseburger.

Bawdy - thanks! I enjoyed your 5!

Dawn - I'm glad your new office is in the works! I enjoyed your 5 and I'm with you on -

Body wise: My breasts- uplift and inspire.. lets hear it for uplift and inspire, instead of droop and drag.. . Or hell.. at least get them both to be the same size!

I told my dh I would love to have it done, and he said we'll see, so that's a definate maybe!

Here's my 5 -

1. I have beautiful blue eyes if I do say so, but others do too.
2. I can control my life as far as my eating habits, which relates to everything sometimes. By having my eating under control I feel like I am in control, which is a real great feeling and also makes stress easier for me to handle.
3. I am a very upbeat person.
4. I have great hair.
5. I have some great talents, singing, sewing, crafts and quite a bit of creativity.

Wow, that was kind of fun to toot my own horn!

hey everyone!!! great new java room. i like it!! i also like how our PP section has picked up also with more specific posts.

my week out of town went really well. i ate wonderful and even excercised a couple of times. i went for a 30min jog one day and a 3hr walk the next.

but then i came home and blew it yesterday with pancakes for breakfast at a restaurant called the Pig and Pancake. (now who could pass up pancakes at a reastaurant with that name huh?!?!) and in true michele fashion, once i blow once in a day, the whole day goes down the tubes. so i finished it off with cookies for dessert. and so you say get back on track today. well it worked great till about 1 hr ago when i noticed we didn't eat all the cookies last night. yup, finished them off.

well, there is no more cookies in the house so will try to keep on track tomorrow and forward!!!

i am wondering what is brining on these weekend binges?? anyone have any ideas? suggestions?

talk to you all later!!

big hi to all our newbies!!!

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!!!!!!!!! :stop: :cheer: :Puke: (well that is the best I can come up with the red white and blue!)

Sorry that I have not been on lately, for some reason My password and email address has been coming up invalid! After the 5th time and waiting the 15 mins, It FINALLY went through, but hard to say if /when/& it will happen again!

I hope you are all having a fun 4th, my ds went with his grandma to the picnic and family reunion, my dh is fencing and since our oats are ready to bale i will be going out shortly to rake. It is a pretty rare occasion that we get to celebrate this time of the year, but I am glad that my ds was able to get away! Bawdy and Elaine you will have to have a margarita for me!!! :)

Michele, the weekend binges are more commen then you think, you are usually relaxing from the week of work, sometimes just coming down from a busy /stressfull week can cause it, are you getting enough to eat during the week? you body has a memory and will sometimes try to make up for it? Are you bored? Time in the house can be a trigger just out of boredom alone! Are you getting enough liquids in?? (another trigger) Try to stay occupied, if you can (I know it is hard with kids) do not have your trigger foods in the house!
i hope some of this helps! I have a binging problem at times to, so I can relate!!! Good luck!!! :)

Song, your working out is an inspiration to us all!!  I just had to laugh at your droop and drag remark!!

I have really enjoyed reading everyone's lists, I will have to scratch my head to come up with one sometime Right now I am having such an issue with my regain (4#) My face is so full I am not in a good place right now! I guess that I can say that my health is good, which is a BIG THING!!! :D

Dawn, sorry to hear that about you not getting in,atleast you got to spend some timw with your son! ;)

i am thinging of trying a week of induction to see if i can kick the weekend binges/cheats. it seems like i have lost some of my willpower/controll. i will re-read that section of the book and see how different it is from how i have been eating. i know i have been pretty lax with the fruit and lc breads.

Hey all. Hope y'all are recovering from the long weekend.

Health vibes to Wendy. :( I know four people right now who are very sick with a cold/flu type of thing.

Can I do the "Five Things I Like About Myself" thing?

1. I like my long hair. I used to wish it was thicker, but that would just be more of a pain to take care of. I can wash it, tie it up and go.
2. I like my hands. I have long fingers.
3. I'm a pretty good cook, if I do say so myself.
4. I'm a pretty good musician, if I do say so myself.
5. I'm going to be a good piper. (Hey, these are things I like about myself, too bad about what it inflicts on my neighbors! :D )

Have a good day.

Thanks for all the warm-wishes to get better! I feel much more normal today. DBF came over on Saturday while I was lounging in my jammies and drove me to a spot that we could see the fireworks from the car. It was very sweet of him.

The news here is that I made an internet purchase two nights ago at about 12 am when I couldn't sleep. Definitely not a habit I want to get into:) I bought the Tom Venuto's e-book "Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle." If any of you have heard of it or are interested, let me know. It's basically a comprehensive nutrition, cardio, and weightlifting philosophy. I bought it mostly for informational purposes. I don't know how much I buy into it, especially the nutrition. I guess that's not entirely true. I think that the nutrition is probably very good for someone intensely working out, but I don't know that I have that kind of motivation right now. There are some basic principles that I'd like to incorporate into my own plans, such as cycling calories and carbs. I have stepped up my own exercising in the last couple weeks, though it is far from true cardio and weight training. I have started doing my new Pilates tapes which involve using resistance bands and 1 lb arm weights. I have also turned the walking I've been doing on the treadmill into spurts of interval running. I've noticed that this increase in intensity is definitely helping raise my energy for a long time afterwards. Anyway, I have no food, so I must go to the store. Have a good one!

Originally posted by Pogie - Excerpts from "Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution"

quote:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The first week, you stay at 0 carbs. Remember that the '72 plan does not use net carbs (do not deduct fiber or sugar alcohols). Now this 0 carb thing may not make sense, since leafy greens, celery, cucumbers, radishes and other allowable foods contain carbs. Atkins states on p. 134: "PLUS NUMBER 2: GREEN SALADS PLUS . . . The second plus is that you're allowed green salad with our lunch and dinner. Yes, even though this first week of the diet is called a carbohydrate-free diet and lettuce contains a tiny bit of carbohydrate. But in biological systems an approximation can do the job. Biology isn't quite like engineering. Given the amount of carbohydrate in these two salads, what happens in the body is approximately the same in 99 percent of dieters as if no salad had been eaten. ..."

BTW, PLUS NUMBER ONE is the steak plus almost any meat, fish, or fowl. He goes on to explain the protein to fat proportions that occur naturally in most meats, etc. We can have butter with lobster and so on.

PLUS NUMBER 3 he explains is filling, high-calorie snack foods. Rather than celery and carrot sticks (rabbit food) we are allowed imported cheeses of every description, stuffed olives, crisp fried pork rinds.

PLUS NUMBER 4: DESSERTS. The first week you can have carbohydrate-free gelatin desserts. If sweets are what you miss the most, in the following weeks you can have cheesecake (see page 240), macaroons, pudding, fresh strawberries in artificially sweetened whipped cream, mocha pie, chocolate mousse prepared the way this book recommends. ..."

PLUS NUMBER 5: EAT WHEN YOU WANT - BUT START WITH A BIG COZY BREAKFAST. He explains the benefits of eating in the morning.

The first week eat nothing that is not on the list (this list is posted for the most part at the beginning of the '72 Challenge Board).
"The Diet Revolution Rules:
1. Don't count calories.
2. Eat as much of the allowed foods as you need to avoid hunger.
3. Don't eat when you're not hungry.
4. Don't feel you must finish everything on your plate just because it's there.
5. Drink as much water or calorie-free beverages as thirst requires. Don't restrict fluids ... but it is not necessary to force them either.
6. Frequent small meals are preferable.
7. If weakness results from rapid weight loss, you may need salt.
8. Every day take a high-strength multivitamin pill.
9. Read the label on "low-calorie" drinks, syrups, desserts. Only those with no carbohydrate content are allowed."

p. 141 Chapter 13
"How to Follow the Diet - Level by Level

THE FIRST WEEK: EAT THE MOST, LOSE THE MOST." He explains the reason we can lose weight is that when there are no carbohydrates for fuel, the body is forced to burn its own fat. That it doesn't matter how rich the zero-carb foods are, since without carbs very little protein and fat can be stored as fat, so that no caloric deficit is needed. This is why the diet works.

On p. 143 he states that during the first week that cravings should diminish - that our compulsive-eating pattern should be going away. Several other things should be improved; i.e., energy level; heartburn; colitis; headaches .
p. 144: "This diet is fixed only for a week. After that - because it must be a lifetime diet, it is as variable as are individual tastes.
I've labeled the addition of carbohydrates that follow "second level," "third level," "fourth level," fifth level," but in fact the additions are interchangeable and flexible. You can make any of these additions any week that you choose. I could be very arbitrary and specify exactly what you may add each week. It would be simpler, much less confusing, and with much less possibility for error. But I don't impose that rigidity on my private patients, so why should I do that to you? I am so committed to making this a livable lifetime diet that I am letting you select your own variations, within the rules set up by your biological rule book.
On p. 145 he says, "... At each level, remember you will add approximately five to eight grams of carbohydrate daily for a week and analyze the results. Most of my patients agree that the best way to handle the second level is to add cottage cheese ... if you happen to like it. ... Ricotta or cottage cheese contains about one gram of carbohydrate per ounce, and I think the next addition might be as much as eight ounces of ricotta or cottage cheese a day. You may eat much less cottage cheese and have other goodies instead. There are other things that you might think would be terribly fattening, but they're not very high in carbohydrates. Example: certain kinds of nuts - walnuts, pecans, brazils, and macadamias - are the most suitable. One ounce of these averages under five grams of carbohydrate. Or you may want to have more cream in our coffee. Or use two or three slices of tomato or onion in your cooking. ... Just keep track of the grams of carbohydrate you're adding to the basic diet per day - keep them under eight - and take your choice. At the end of a week on the second level, check your progress. If you are still free of hunger, still losing, still "turning purple," you're ready for the third level." (Note: my ketostix never turned purple; I am fortunate is they register in the "small" zone. I don't worry about it too much, though.)

The third level, you add another five to eight grams more carbs. He does make suggestions of what food you can add, but like he says earlier, it is flexible and basically up to the individual. He does describe levels four and five, but I have not gotten that far, yet. But, in level four, you can add fruit. The fifth level is for those lucky enough to still have all the wonderful benefits - no hunger, good chemistry, purple Ketostix ... they could try using the soy flour. I have to study the upper levels a bit more before totally understanding them.

Hi everyone!! First day and I am feeling good and motivated!! I think I am going to have good results this time as I am hormone free. I chose Atkins 72 because I had good results back in February when I did it. I have let my eating get out of control the past few weeks and I am doing something about it before I start gaining back weight. Atkins 72 does not count net carbs and produces some pretty good results. I am also expecting TOM today so having some bloating issues going on as well.

 Have a great day!!

Atkins 72 sounds interesting. For me right now, it seems I have hit my "tilt-o-meter" with learning about carbs, meals, counting, figuring and planning. I am at status quo temporarily and need to just give it a rest and do what I am doing. Odd for me, cause I am a glutton for knowledge and info. But I have just hit that info wall, I guess.

Went to fireworks last nite, parked in my office parking lot, they were held on the street right behind my office, so we sat right there in my car. Best parking... there were 1000's of people for blocks and blocks. Every available parking lot was filled, but mine. Surprised me, cause the display started at 9:45 and we got there at 9:40 pm.. I thought we wouldnt be able to park there.. but. .across the street was packed. Anyways.. we had the best seat. But learned not to take the dog, jillie, the one we got back in november. She doesnt like them. Nope...Couldnt persuade her. Gave her double treats when we got home, and will have to pay dearly for counseling I am sure.

I, too, love reading other's lists about what they like about themselves..thanks for posting them. There was a time, that I would have had a hard time listing one thing that I liked about myself.

thank you ellie for posting that. i am not sure how strict i want to go.

am i correct in that induction is meat/cheese (4oz)/egg/cream (4tsp) only with 2 cups a salad(Lettuce, cukes, celery and radishes) per day. snack on pork rinds and sugar free jello. and drink lots of water??

so what did your menu look like for today?

thanks again for the info

You correct Michele, that is it. The good thing is that you go into ketosis very quickly and your appetite will drop significantly. Also, with this version....it is only the first week, unless you want to do it longer. Week 2 you can start adding more veggies, nuts, etc. Just make sure you add slowly. I plan on following it for about a month or so and then gradually go go back to PP.

Today:

B - 1 cup coffee w/ 1 TBS cream, liquid splenda
L - 4 strips bacon, 2 eggs over easy
S - 2 deviled eggs
D - Baked chicken, small green salad w/ vinegar based dressing
S - SF jello w/ dab of whipped cream

I am not good at water...drinking water flavored w/splenda

well, after hemming and hawing, i have decided to do my own "re-induction". i don't think i can stick with as strict as atkins. so here is what i will do. atkins induction as far as meat/cheese/cream/eggs go. but i am not worrying about veggies. i will eat whatever veggie i feel up to. but that will be all for me, meat/dairy/eggs/veggies/water. (and my 22ozmug-o-coffee w/ 1/2 and 1/2 and splenda in the morning to get me through the 45min commute) i will try to stick with this for a couple of days and then add berries and nuts back at the end of the week. all while staying under 30 net carbs per day.

if that doesn't kick me outta my craving/cheating mode, i will try something stricter and see what happens.

wish me luck!!

Good morning. Went away for a long weekend with good friends. The kids all had a great time seeing each other again and just chasing all over and playing. They live across the street for the school so we made lots of trips to the playground to climb and slide. Had fun swinging. I love the feeling of being so high in the sky ( was teasing my leg work out was the pumping action). Unfortunately, my friend did not have much available for me to stick with things. Everytime we made attempts to buy things she was slightly offended that she wasn't a good cook or provider for us. So the bad news, I sucked it up and ate what was there. I tried to make good choices but there was lots of sugar and white flour so the carbs added up quickly. Needless to say my weight is up to 171.5. I am notkicking myself too hard because I plan to get right back at things today. I intend to stick with mygoals from last week plus an addition

1 Run 30 min Monday - Friday ( may add a day this week)
2 Activities with kids on Saturday and Sunday involving exercise
3 Write down food everyday
4 Maintain 40 carbs a day
5 Drink 10 glasses of water a day
6 Do quiet mediative time each day
7 Be kind to myself, we all make mistakes. (my new one)

Dawn I wish I could have had an upfront parking for the fireworks. I did manage to catch some yesterday from our front porch. Wrapped up in my blanket and really enjoyed them. I missed lots because if they don't shot them high enough to clear the houses but the ones I show we spectacular. It is kinda of breathtaking when some of them go off. It is almost mesmorizing to watch them. Next year I want to take the kids. Had planned to at our friend's house but they don't start them until 10:15 and the younger kids were losing it so we left to put them to bed. I can wait, with all the festivals here in the summer maybe I can sneak some in.

Love reading everyones lists. We all have a lot of good things about ourselves. It is fun to read these because we actually acknowledge for ourselves what we have been doing for each other in our conversations.

Well, I am off to run. Have a good day everyone.

Ellie, I hear that this helps with the nausea, and the headache will soon be forgotton! It sounds like by the way you are feeling that you will be hitting ketosis in no time!!! :yay:

I am tweaking my eating plan also, I usually love to have some lc hot cocoa after my breakfast, well this morning I had it first, and guess what, I DID NOT EAT as much! AHHHA! I am going to try it again tomorow, and my goal is to start not haveing the hot cocoa all the time, I am going to try some tea with that fiber sweetener to cut my carbs and calories, I hope this will work!

Therese, Are you running outside or on the treadmill?? Do you have days that you feel like you had an easy run and others that it was a struggle to finish? I do that alot and it gets so frustrating!!!  PS I like it that you are writing down your goals, GOOD IDEA!!!!

Michele, good luck on the reinduction!!! ;)

Dawn, cute cartoon with the dog, do you just cut and paste????

Elaine, HI there! where are you at today??

Well I better get going if I am going to attempt to keep up with Therese's pace!!

good morning.

well yesterday went well, i ate more then ellie, but somehow still managed to stay under 30 net carbs. ellie-- don't know how you get throught the day with so little to eat. for some reason, the loss of hunger never happens to me!!

i am trying to do better using my journal these days so i am tracking what i eat over there. (as well as fitday).

lissette-- i have those days with running all the time. sometimes i feel like i could go forever, others it is a struggle every step of the way.

i am still trying to think of my list of 5!!

have a great day everybody!!

Boy that's me to a T. I am trying to do my own induction which, until I can do a decent grocery shop next week, is basically eating as clean and close to induction as possible. And drinking a lot of water, which I do all the time anyway.
I managed to do some of my five goals this weekend. I drank plenty of water, did my aerobics tape, swam laps. Did not do my pilates tape yet. This fatigue thing is taking a while to leave.

Acutally ended up eating quite a bit yesterday  . I ate about 8 deviled eggs through the course of the day, a very large chicken breast (great recipe, will post a little later), small salad, SF jello and whipped cream. I went to the gym last night ...big mistake! Felt like crap.

Also...while doing induction don't limit your foods during the first week.

Michele - My appetite won't decrease unless I bring my carbs way down..reason why I am doing Atkins 72.

Bawdy

Shelly - Hope eliminating the cocoa helps :)

Elaine - YOU GO GIRL!!!!

Hi everyone. I had a good day yesterday. I had 32 carbs for the day and was not really hunger at all. I really focused on getting my water in which helps keep the appetite in check.

My weight today is down to 168.5 so I am diuresing lots of the excess fluids but the pounds are still there. Atleast it is moving in the right direction. It also reinforces the need to stay hydrated so I keep diuresing.

Had terrible sinus headache yesterday and today. I can feel it in my ears, eyes, and jaw. Using my cherry pit pac so I can get it focused right where I need it. Even resorting to Tylenol which is doing little, probably try some hot tea later. I know some quiet rest would help but the kids are quite wild today and it is raining out so they won't be outside unfortunately.

Lisette, I have kept my running to the treadmill. I find if I go outside I tend to be more prone to shin splints. I also know I wouldn't be able to go with the kids so this is my guarantee to get it in. I know what you mean about some days are easy. I sometimes have to bargain with myself to finish the run because there are days I could walk off after 5 minutes. I keep telling myself this is one of the reasons I don't have to take my blood pressure medicine. I figure most medication takes 45 minutes to start to work so I am just giving myself 30-40 minutes of running as my medication. It is sure cheaper than the drugs. I think Fridays are my worst day because I know I am off on Saturday and Sunday.

I think writing my goals makes me accountable for what I do. I think this really helps me stay focused on things. It is even helping with some clean living.

Bawdy, I like the ice crush with margaritas

Song, what crafts and sewing stuff are you into? I do quilting and some clothes construction. Made shorts for everyone last week.

The LC cocoa is one of my downfalls. I find I just need to limit my chocolate exposure because otherwise I always want more. I find now I can treat myself with nuts or even some yogurt with nuts, cinnamon and vanilla. Either of these snacks/treats tend to be self limiting.

Having a late lunch. Didn't get going until later this am on account of the headache. It is making me slightly queasy so I am not eating much.

Hope everyone does well today.

Well, the good news is I am back down to 166.5. I know I have been here before so the bad news is if I had not put the weight on last week I would have dropped below the 166.5. Oh well, now I am back and plan to continue the downward journey.

The sinus headache is still there but is letting up a little. Fortunately hubby came home early yesterday so I actually took some downtime during the day. It helped.

My appetite is not to great with my sinuses flairing so that is a good thing. I almost have to make myself want to get my protein in. Yesterday at lunch all I could handle was LC toast with a little low sugar spread. I thought about using the LC options chicken noodle soup but they are so high in salt and with trying to getting the pounds back off I really didn't want to try that option.

Lisette, congratulations on the impending arrival of the grandbaby. I bet it fun to be able to see the babies. Enjoy ! I love baby toes they are so cute : :)

Not much scheduled today. I am going to get running and help up with cutting the lawn. We are cutting the neighbor's because they are out of town til the weekend and it is getting long so I will have an adding work out today.

HI to everyone   Hope you all have a good clean day.

oh Lissette, I am so excited, cant wait til you get back and share the good news!

Unity-great to see you..and youre right at least its not going up.. but I can 'feel' your frustration....

Shrubie-WTG on the loss...sorry about the sinus's that can really drag a person down...Keep onward!

Ellie-you made me want to have deviled eggs! guess I will have to brew some up!

Elaine- I continue to stress that you should just be kind to yourself.. I know its sometimes VERY surprising that it takes so long to recouperate from different types of surgeries, and I heard all about so and so who was up and running at full speed capacity only 3 days/or 1 week after theirs..but it really took a toll on me, more than I thought it would.. I do believe my recovery really spanned 10-12 weeks before I truly was physically my old self.. emotionally it took another......oh.. 10 years or so. To be honest, to this day I still have flashes of.... not really feeling bad persay, but sad at what I will never experience. But I dont linger in the sadness, whereas in the past I built a tent there, hauled in furniture and basically wallowed there.

Again, its a journey as shrubie mentioned..and I just want you to be kind to yourself..and say.. "its ok, I am where I am supposed to be!"

Ok, off to the TIRE store, yeppers, that is what I said, got sidetracked thinking about the stupid jerky son, and wammo, up and over a curb I went, hubby wants me to have the tire checked, there are two little gouges in the tire, I dont think it looks that bad ( makes a face ) HE thinks it needs to be replaced. What does he think he is.. a truck driver or something? LOL!!

Hi to everyone that is flitting thru! :)

so how are all our do-overs, re-inductees, ect doing. i had a really clean day yesterday. ended up using the ladies room like crazy. and was down a few this morning. i hope this keeps up and all my cookie/pizza/ice cream lbs go away this week. i hope so because it is hard for me to eat like this when i am traveling and working in the field. i tend to rely on more nuts and fruit then i do when i am in the office.

i am contemplating a HUGE vacation. my sister is living in india for this next year and a half (she got their begining of june) and i am thinking i should go and visit with her.

well, should get back to work. break is over!! hehe

Definition of HUB = Head Up Butt

I was in glee about getting this great parking space, walking around the store, for at LEAST a half hour.. then it dawned on me, WHY the heck I was EVEN there at wally world in the first place.. LIKE DOH Dawn.. to get the TIRE checked.. so had to leave my cart, walk way to the front and back out, then drive around to the tire center.. which then they told me the GOOD news.. the tire was under warranty!! Yay..saved 75 bucks! Took another hour 1/2 but I managed to control my spending and only bought myself a new purse. :)

I woke up today STARVING! I mean full tilt hungry..and I just was sharing the other day, that I dont generally experience hunger. Maybe cause I had more calories yesterday than normal for me? The last couple of weeks I have been averaging 1000-1400, and yesterday I think I nearly hit 1800.... who knows, either way, I just finished a bagel with cream cheese and 4 slices bacon and finishing up a cup of coffee..and already drank 20 oz water. And......my belly is still feeling 'empty'..hungry..

MAYBE its the TWO more POUNDS off of my body that is making my body go.. feed me..give it BACK to me!

NO WAY.. I RULE THIS BODY! NOT MY STOMACH!!!

Saw the new office yesterday... looks like they are clearing the land for the parking area.. so my big concern about him having my clients walk thru the hair salon to get down to my office, may already be solved.. he told me it may not happen for a couple of months after I move in..which troubled me.

So..off and running..for those of you that friday is the end of the week: YAY TGIF for you! Tomorrow is my TGIS... .:) My days off are Sat/Sun's.. :)

Feeling a little low tonight. There was a chance "you know who" was going to be stopping by yesterday (his idea). Didn't. Long story. Still might be a chance he will stop by tomorrow. Don't know. "Invitation" went out this morning; it's been read; no response as of yet. So no clue.

Sorry if this is cryptic, but I don't really want to post all the gory details.

Went out with some friends from the office tonight after work. I usually don't do this type of thing, but then again it's not like I have anyone to come home to. It was really a lot of fun. Anyway, tonight marks 3 full months since it happened. Maybe I needed a diversion. Went to a Mexican restaurant and had 2 margaritas. Having my third now.

It's 5 am and I cannot sleep. Actually, I fell asleep sometime before 10 pm, so I have gotten plenty of actually snoozetime, but I wanted to sleep in today!!

Bawdy-You are so right. We all tend to get stuck in the here and now and often don't spend enough time celebrating the progress we have made. You reminded me that last summer at this time, I was 20 lbs heavier!! I had practically resigned myself as always being 160-something pounds, and had almost given up. I was even doing LC at the time. But, with the help of you and other wonderful people, I somehow found the strength to succeed. Sure, I'd like to lose a couple more pounds and firm up, but I am wearing size 10's and actually feel pretty good about the way I look most of the time. You are one of the major reasons for this, and for that, I thank you:)

Dawn-Great to hear that your mind is stronger than your stomach. You will certainly be rewarded soon!

Lissette-Congrats on the grandbaby. What a beautiful name. My middle name is Nicole, too, btw:)

Unfortunately, I haven't done too much rollerblading this summer. I was planning to go last weekend, but getting sick put a wrench in that idea. I have done a lot of walking, though, and it makes me nearly as happy. I started teaching summer school this past week. 1 week down, 2 more to go! I am sharing a classroom with another teacher, and so we have twice the number of kids. They are a very spirited group, which makes it all very interesting, but also EXHAUSTING. It's crazy how the summer fills up so quickly, you know?

Well, I think it's time to go lay back down in my bed and see if I can squeeze out any more zzzz's....

Dawn, I remember when you were "stuck" at 214 for what seemed (to you) like forever. No more!

GOOD Point.. I was kind of thinking when I went to bed last nite, that it has taken me nigh on 5 1/2 months to get this far. And I felt a little deflated, and thought.. man.. another 6 months to maybe lose another 32 pounds? that would put me at 11 months to lose 60 pounds.

Which to me seems like a DARN long time-(in comparison... I know I know.. nodding her head...sheepishly, but truthfully!)

But in reality, its like this:

If I hadnt started this on Jan 30th.. I would still be at 234 or more by now..as the weight was creeping on from going on insulin shots. I wouldnt have succeeded at exercise due to the fatigue and added weight slowing me down. So..if I were to 'stop' ( which is NOT an option for me, just theoretically in my whiney moment, whilst looking at the mashed potatoes and delicious warm rolls at the buffet-again in a weak moment of not eating right all day, and being so hungry all day-so I just took 1/4 c. of louisianna dirty rice to lay a foundation for the bourban st. chicken)

Where was I? Oh. .:::;; scratches her forehead :::::: yes..if I were to stop, where would I be in 6 months? Probably back to where I was in January or worse. If I continue and lose anything, be it 5 pounds or 30 more pounds, then I will be that much closer to where I wish to be. :)

Thanks for the reality check...off to curves..and wench----pauses to make sure I have her attention ----

Got it yet---

I am so proud of you. Admire you. And pray for you. You are ok in my book.

Gotta run if I am going to grab my 3rd curves workout for the week and get over to the office for my first client...

Morning!

Yes we do have to look at how far we all have come! I know what you mean Dawn, if I ever "give up the fight" I would quickly put it all back on and soon be morbidly obese, (it runs in our family). I know that some of my friends get tired of my talking about food choices or working out, (and NO that is not all there is in my life) but it is something that I have to be mindfull of. I am so glad for this thread and all the support that you all give!! I have gotten alot of ideas along with being able to vent ect... So onward and downward!!!(the pounds that is!!!) :D :D

Thanks Bawdy and Wendy, (cool about your middle names!) I wish that we lived closer, but this fall we will be up more and spoiling Makaen and Kaz, and Our oldest Gunnar!!

Shoot Wendy, with all of the activity with the extra kids you prob. do not need to roller blade! And yes you have come a long way, It helps to see what others are going through and what they can really acheive. I know I have learned not to give up! Are you still doing induction - type eating?? I am upping my protein and trying to cut out the extra frankens that had crept in!! I do not have much time to exercise but sneak in some when I am back at the house, I know that our summer crunch is on and soon it will be August and I will have more time to devote to my treadmill!!! :)

Bawdy, sorry that things are still being so rocky for you, Like we have all said before, he does NOT deserve you, but we are here to lend a heartfelt ear anyway!!!!! :bhug: :bhug: :bhug:

Well I best get going, I have a HUGE field to rake up for haying and it is going to be a hot one today!

HAVE A GREAT SATURDAY!!

Hey all! I am in a rare mood today. I cleaned my apt!!! That NEVER happens. In the 2 years I have lived here, I have probably vacuumed maybe 5-6 times total. That's kind of embarassing to admit. I am not a pig, though, just detest vacuuming and dusting with a passion. I always do my dishes and don't have any clutter laying around. Anyway, took me 2.5 hours to clean a one bedroom apt:)

Dawn-You are so right. It's frustrating sometimes when the weightloss is not as quick as we'd like. But, so long as we are making progress, we are soooo much farther along than if we hadn't done anything at all. Thanks for reminding us of this!

Lissette-I hadn't gone back to induction-like eating. I had decided to do a clean Protein Power, meaning no artificial sweeteners (I've always avoided all other LC products and Frankenfoods). It didn't last very long and then I did a couple weeks going hog-wild with the daVinci syrup, SF gum, diet Rite, and that Fruit2O energy drink. I was craving ALL the time. I knew it was all something I needed to avoid, so 2 days ago, I quit again, cold turkey. I have incorporated some actual whole-grains in small amounts. Last night I had a small amount of plain, steel-cut oatmeal with my dinner, and was down to 147.5 today. I think I just have to come to terms with the fact that I simply cannot handle anything sweet-tasting, whether it is real sugar or fake. It just messes with my whole system. This is why it's been so hard for me to give up, b/c I am obviously addicted to it. But, it's something I have to do, and I've completely cleaned it out of the house.

Definitely, eliminated as much fake food as possible I think is a positive step for all. It may be lower in carbs but I don't believe that it is entirely safe. I would rather indulge in a little whole-wheat bread or oatmeal a few times per week. Anyway, that's obviously my point of view and others may disagree. Well, I have to finish up the cleaning now. I did everything but the dreaded vacuuming. The sooner I do it, the sooner it's done. And then I don't have to think about it again for another couple months or so;)

Hi Dawn, Wendy, And the much-missed Bawdy

A lot of you have done very well over the last few months and you SHOULD be proud of yourselves! I definitely have some physical and emotional issues going on and wish I were joining you on that wonderful downhill roll but I am not giving up .

Bawdy-I'll hold him, you hit him over the head with a big enough plank to wake him up.

hey pp pals!!

i do think back every now and then and remember i was wearing a size 26W and mens 46" pants. i am now a 18W and mens 40" pants. that is quite a difference. i know the scale fluctuates and i know i just need to be happy as long as i fit in my clothes!!! but it is very depressing to see the scale reading 201 right now, when i was sure i was in onderland for good!!! however, i feel so much better overall eating this way that i will NEVER give up!!!

http://www.epstein.de/Fun/nevergiveup.jpg

i relaxed my eating a little yesterday and ate some berries and peanuts. actually i was at friends house and they were eating popcorn, and offered me peanuts (i had to munch on something, the popcorn smell was driving me nuts). in result my calories were higher then what i will lose at, therefore, still 201 this morning.

i think since i seem to have lost as much initial-reintervention-lbs that i am going to i need to add some fruit back in to my diet to get the calories down. at least that is my plan for next week.

have a great saturday!!

Unity, it just goes to show that if you stick to plan, things will happen. The human body is not a science lab in which if you follow all the rules exactly you'll get predictable results. If only that were true!

My food choices have still been pretty crappy lately. I just can't seem to get it in gear to make good choices. I'm still at 154, I think -- at least all my new suits are still loose on me. Take yesterday, for example. For breakfast, I had 3 cups of black coffee and 2 slices LC toast with SF peanut butter and regular butter. Lunch was a mock danish made with 4 ounces neufchatel cheese, 3 Tbsp half-and-half, 2 eggs, and some SF maple syrup. Dinner was 10 Ritz crackers and one and a half slices of cheese, and 2 glasses of wine. Sounds like it would be very high in fat, probably ok in carbs, and low in protein. Here are the numbers:

Calories: 1409
Fat: 94 grams (59%)
ECC: 47 grams (13%)
Protein: 55 grams (16%)

So, those carbs are way high. If all those carbs had come from veggies (or even a couple!), that would have been better. Instead the carbs came from the LC bread and from the crackers. And the protein was WAY too low. I should have had twice that much.

I'm not gaining from eating this way, but I'm not doing myself any favors health-wise either. I just can't bring myself to cook full meals for just me. A casserole would be good, but it's too hot for that.

How about helping me out with a couple ideas. I did buy some beef for shish-kebob, and that will be 2 high-protein meals.

But it's not really the protein I'm having trouble getting in (yesterday notwithstanding). I need to get some veggies into me. Maybe this morning I'll run up to the farm market to see what's fresh. On the way back, I'll stop at the grocery store.

Morning! Another day that I cannot sleep in past 6 am:( Oh well. Weight is holding steady at 147.5.

Bawdy-Hmmmm.....What veggies do you like the most? I have found this summer that I am totally burnt out from cucumbers and chicken and bagged salmon for lunches, b/c I ate it every day all year. So I've made some changes. I've been eating cottage cheese, several chicken breakfast sausages, and a small tomato for breakfast, and for lunch, I've been having a couple eggs scrambled with mushrooms and topped with melted 2% colby. I'm loving it! Do you like cottage cheese? It has TONS of protein. Do you have Greek yogurt at your grocery store? My Trader Joe's has a brand called Total 0%, with 15g protein and only 6g carbs per cup. They also have quite a line of Splenda-sweetened LC yogurts out there now. As far as other quick protein choices, I eat a lot of hamburgers and chicken sausages that I get from Trader Joe's. I do eat a LOT of cheese, especially cottage cheese, mozzarella, and the 2% colby. I probably eat at least 4 oz of hard cheese plus at least 1/2 c. if not more of cottage cheese per day. The protein adds up quickly. As far as veggies, rather than having a mock danish, could you have your eggs as an omelet filled with mushrooms, tomatoes, and/or peppers (and of course cheese)? What about having a salad and topping it with all sorts of LC goodies? That's often the only type of veggies I feel like eating in the summer. What are your thoughts on avocado? They can make a nice addition to a salad, are good in omelets, sliced on a burger, or turned into guacamole, yum:) Or, rather than having veggies at breakfast, you might have a few berries instead. Blueberries are AWESOME right now, so big and plump and juicy, just how I like 'em!!

Unity-Congratulations! All your patience is paying off:)

Acipenser-It's nice to see a picture of you. Hang in there. You HAVE come a long way, and being at 201 right now is just a test. A few months from now you will be laughing about it all as you are comfortably in the 100's:)

Elaine-Glad to hear you are still plugging along. What are your current goals right now? We are always here for you.

Thanks for the tips, Wendy. I'm eating 3 eggs scrambled with 3/4 ounce Havarti cheese, and 1 slice LC toast with butter. I think I might have to go back to using Fitday for a week or so.

Fruit at breakfast is really the way to go. I have been having a few tomato cravings lately. For whatever reason, tuna salad with sliced tomatos has entered my mind lately.

I also really like cole slaw -- unfortunately, my favorite is KFC, and that's probably loaded with sugar. Hey, let's find out . . .

Yup, just as I thought. Went to the KFC web site (isn't the Internet great!) and a 130-gram portion of cole slaw (however much that is) comes up at 190 calories, 11 grams fat, 22 grams carb with 3 grams fiber and 13 grams sugar, and 1 gram protein. That's a lot of sugar!

I do have a LC recipe for the dressing, which I made last year and is really good. I know you can buy the cabbage already "slawed" with a little carrot in small bags. I'll do that.

Also, I have a recipe for a 3-cheese spinach dip that everyone loves. I can buy some raw veggies to use as dip. That would make it a double-whammy for veggies. And the neufchatel, ricotta, and cheddar would up the protein count a bit. I wonder what this would taste like with a bit of bacon thrown in . . .

For whatever reason, homemade salads just don't appeal to me right now in the least. A restaurant Caesar salad sounds ok once in a while, but not too often. This is strange, since I've gone through periods where I could eat Caesar salad every single day.

OK, that's a start.

Lissette, this is the fruit2o site:
www.fruit2o.com
which, for some reason, I can't get onto??? Forbidden???Wendy, this is probably an omen that I shouldn't drink that citrus boost

Bawdy. one of my fave summer meals is fresh tomato with olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper and fresh basil or basil and oregano with mozzarella cheese chunks. I am actually having that today for lunch. It's fast and you can make it ahead and put it in the fridge or let it sit out 1/2 an hour to let the seasonings blend and then put the cheese on it.Add some chicken or steak if you need protein, that's what I usually do. I have this with hamburgers alot.

Wendy, my immediate goal is to get my energy back and start working out again. I've been eating pretty clean (except for a low carb margharita last night :o ) which I had with grilled steak.Anyone who has chronic fatigue would know what this post-surgery fatigue is like.

Energy is a BIG commodity, I think that 95%+ people have a tendency to over eat or eat the wrong foods for a pick me up! ( I'm one of them! )
I would love to give the gurana a try, I just purchased zantrax 3, it has yerba mate, gurana, green tea and it looks like the ingrediants are ones that will not bother me. Wendy, I made an omelet today and my ds came in and so I made 2, I figure that it is alot healthier then cocoa puffs!!! :D

Bawdy, I can not handle fruit first thing in the mornings, maybe after my meal, or an inbetween snack thrown in with yogurt ect... In fact I have never been able to do the grapefruit or orange juice either, makes me shaky and I feel awfull! So what is your recipe for the spinach dip?????

Back from the store. I stopped at the farm stand and got some native tomatoes (nothing smells as good as a native tomato), some peas (a little HC, but tolerable), and strawberries ($4.25 a quart!). At the grocery store I got some cut up broccoli and cauliflower, and the fixings for cole slaw and my spinach dip. The slaw is made (had to "fudge" on the dressing since I didn't have all the ingredients -- make that, I had NONE of the ingredients). Had a small dish of strawberries and cream. Forgot how good native strawberries are.

Lunch will be the slaw and some rolled ham, and VERY diluted Kool-Aid. The mix makes 1/2 gallon, but I use a full gallon of water. And it calls for 1 cup of sugar; I use 1/2 cup of Splenda. Way too sweet the normal way.

BawdyWench
Sun, Jul-11-04, 13:25
1 cup ricotta cheese
1 pkg vegetable soup/recipe mix
1 pkg (10 ounce) frozen spinach
1 pkg (8 ounce) neufachatel (or regular philly cheese)
1 jar diced pimiento
1/3 cup finely shredded Cheddar cheese

Mix everything together EXCEPT the cheddar. Refrigerate for several hours so the soup/recipe mix rehydrates and the flavors blend. You can eat it just like this, or . . .

Spread the dip out in a pie or quiche plate. Sprinkle with the Cheddar cheese. Microwave at medium-high for 5 to 7 minutes until the cheese has melted and the dip looks hot.

It is so easy. Great for pot lucks.

i am feeling kinda blah/bloated/and grouchy.... leave it to the dear bf to ask me if it is b**ch week....hehe hopefully something is around the corner and i will feel better soon.

i feel better eating fruit this weekend. i will give it another week of just adding in fruit and nuts and then see if i feel up to adding some grains in. we will also see how the scale is feeling. (hopefully good...)

Bawdy--- nothing beats produce fresh from a farm stand. that is actually one thing that we don't see around where i live that i miss from back east.

Lissette and Wendy-- thanks for the encouragment and kind words. it is taking some getting used to to see my face on all my posts. does any body else feel that way ( that used to not have a pic up there and now does...?)

Unity, I think Karen has been visiting hairstylist.com!

I'm turning over a new leaf this week and trying to make healthier food choices. So, instead of grabbing a slice of LC toast with peanut butter, I made myself 3 scrambled eggs with a bit of shredded Cheddar cheese. To give it a little zing, I liberally sprinkled some cayenne pepper in it. Talk about an eye-opener!

KAREN, if you're still around, and if you are tempted to try my recipe, tell me what it's missing. It's really really good, but when I was having it yesterday, it almost tasted a bit bland. Is there an herb or something that would give it a kick?

Off to work. I'll catch up tonight.

Michele, yes I know what you mean, I am so usto seeing a cow for me also!! It is wierd to see my mug out there too!!! :daze: But it is nice to see what all of our pp pals look like!!! (ELAINE??????????????)

Bawdy, I am NOT exactly qualified like Karen, but how about some chives and green onions chopped up fine????????? Next time we get to the big city I am going to buy it and make some! Our neighborhood ranches are getting together later on today for a nut feed and potluck, I would of loved to of brought that,(can I borrow some???) well I just went ahead and made chocolate chip cookies for it. (and NO I did NOT sample!!!) That is the one thing that I find difficult with this woe, I am such a "cook by taste" then following a recipe, but I am learning, I also have my dh and ds for "testers"!

Dawn, It seems like in almost every family we have some tough kids, The last time we went up to Rapid we had just pulled into the hospital parking lot (to go see our daughter and baby) when our oldest had called my m- in- law ( who was with us just parking). our dd was in the same parking lot and was TOO BUSY to pull back in or even to drive by and say hello! There has not been any quarrels either. (they live over an hour away from Rapid and we do not get to see them much!) And she would not even call or talk to her dad, ( think that she has issues that her sister has 2 kids now and she is stopping at one) AND her mother was at the hospital ( she plays games that way also.) So last night she calls and when her dad mentions that she doesn't apologise and trys to justify it! KIDS!!! They think that parents don't have feelings, even when they are SUPPOSED to be grown up!!! Well i could go on but you all do not need this negative stuff so early in the morning!!! ;)

Hello to Elaine, Unity,Ellie,Therese,Karen,Orang(miss you!)And to everyone else here! Have a GREAT MONDAY! (if possible!!!) :daze: :daze: :daze:

Lost another 3.25 inches for a grand total of 11.5 inches gone from this body and lost 5 more pounds for a grand total of 16.50 pounds since attending curves. Pretty good numbers there, and I am feeling very good about the whole thing.

Hi ladies, it appears as if I'm the only man here but please allow my intrusion. First, I want to thank everyone here who has given me good advice. I am half way reading PP lifeplan and I registered with fitday.com yesterday. Great site and now I've decided to watch my calories along with the carb . I'm really excited about all this LCing and it is working good. I'm now at 209# from 225 on June 1st. This is my 9th day of induction ......or... PP book 1 calls it Phase 1 Intervention. This evening for dinner I had a real treat, 6 0z of fish fillets with my favorite lettuce (fresh leaf lettuce) I tightly chop 3 green onions, put it in a bowl, then I poured whipping cream (about 1/2 c) on top of the onions and mix the two as to form a thick paste. I added enough salt to give a salty taste. I chop 5 or 6 leaves of lettuce (enough to fill a good bowl) and mix it all in. The cream will have a tendancy to go to the bottom so you have to keep mixing it as you eat it....try it and let me know what you think of it.

Bigshot-You are doing an incredible job so far and have a great attitude. Even though we are usually just females, it's always fun to have a guy around, especially one that is so motivated. Your dedication will certainly be contagious. Welcome!

Acipenser-I agree that you look VERY familiar:) Great to see a pic of you. I also feel a whole lot better with fruit in my daily diet, just a bit, some berries, or half an apple. I definitely find that it helps keep me happier and having a more "balanced" feeling.

Lissette-Regarding your weather, YUK!! It was only in the upper 80's here today, but about 500% humidity, and I made the mistake of going rollerblading at about 2 pm. Took me quite awhile to recover afterwards. I cannot imaging it being 103:(

Neufchatel is just 1/3 lower fat Philadelphia (philly) cream cheese. You can use any cream cheese you like. And, instead of ricotta, you can substitute any kind of cottage cheese.

The vegetable soup/recipe mix is the Knorr dried soup. It comes in a box and has envelopes in it. A lot of people make a sour cream dip out of the onion soup mix.

It takes literally a couple seconds to make.

The only thing I don't like about it is that because of the frozen spinach, it gets a little watery and separates out a bit. They say to squeeze as much water out as possible, but it's not that easy.

Do give it a shot. My eggs this morning were amazing!

By the way, I looked for Wendy's miracle water in the grocery store the other day. Guess the miracle hasn't come to Maine yet!

Hi guys and gals!!

Love to have a male influence in here!! So..glad you popped in.. Bawdy.. I am looking forward to trying your dip.. yum.

You guys made me blush telling me that I look in my 20's!! (keep it coming.. will send you money..but then again, I love to wear hats, may end up having to buy bigger sizes!LOL)

I am 39..for another 5.5 months... the big 4-oh- is in January for me. I think I am ok with the number.. I just want the next 40 years to be healthy and wholesome.. I did adopt my son...but technically I could have naturally birthed him, as I was 20 when he was born.

:: actually sitting here with a big grin on my face, thinking that I look that much younger!::: doesnt take much to tickle me does it?

Funny, cause most of my young teen life.. I was told I looked older, etc.. so I used to worry that when I WAS older, it would catch up w/ me..but it was probably more my attitude and how I carried myself, more so than my appearance. :)

That was a helluva fish Michelle..hubby was jealous when I showed him!

Eating today has been a little challenging for me... the call of every wild thing in my house has called my name and then some.. holding strong, only ate 5 of hubbys pringles.. but going to have a 1/2 c. of rocky road lc ice cream with lc sf pb drizzled on the top... maybe a little whipped cream. yep..talked myself into it...

Off to watch big brother.. will stop in later..

Love ya guys......

Acipenser - thanks for the link. Wow, that's some big fish!

Dawn - gosh, you're just a young thing! I hit 45 this last Feb. After you hit 40, it's just years, of course I'm not sure about the big 50! LOL

Bigshot - is you wife doing PP with you? My dh is 6ft tall and weighs about 160. He eats what I eat, but he gets his carbs in too. My family isn't consuming near as many carbs as they use to. I think it's healthier for them.

Bawdy - I'm going to have to try your dip, I like the idea of using it in my eggs.

I asked a question yesterday, but ya'll seem to have missed it. So, here goes again - should I buy a new dress for Jennie's wedding in September or hope one of the 3 I have still fit? I really want new, but I dunno, it won't fit long at this rate.

good morning everybody.

song--- yes, i totally ment to reply to that question, thanks for asking again. i vote new, but buy it right before you need it so it will last a while after. unless you have an old that fits (and looks good) you want to show off your new figure right!! i think i might try bargain shopping like at www.blair.com if it is not a formal thing. i have a wedding to go to in sept. i am waiting till it is a little closer then i was thinking about getting this dress: dress (http://www.blair.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?pcats=87616,87664&categoryId=87664&catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=22504&langId=-1), if it is a formal thing i don't really know.

bawdy--- well, when i am on the clock i study them, when i am off the clock and i am lucky enough to catch a keeper with my fishing pole (i am not allowed to cheat and use the gear from work....) i eat them.

good news on the scale this morning. 199.5. boy, i was worried it would take longer to see that again. next goal. to weigh what my signature says!!! does anybody else not change their signature when they go up??

Song is my hero! My advice is to wait until about a week before the big event, then go to an outlet store. Believe it or not, you can also get amazing deals at Goodwill. Sometimes things there still have the tags on them from the store. It's not just someone's cast offs.

Michelle, very cute dress! Looks like the type of dress you can get a lot of wear out of.

Another great source for inexpensive clothing is chadwicks.com. Trouble is, you have to order it enough in advance so that you can return it and get something else if it doesn't fit.

The good thing is that this is when the end-of-season sales start. Then there's always those places like TJ Maxx, etc.

Acipenser - Thanks for the sturgeon site...very interesting and I can understand why you like your work.

Bawdy - This afternoon, while my wife was out with the girls I made the dip. I was lucky to find the Knorr Veg /soup mix at superstore. Absolutely yummy with cauliflower and I know what I'm having for breakfast tomorrow morning....Bawdy's Omelette... Thankyou kindly.

Songberrie - no my wife does'nt do PP with me. She does samle a bit whatever I'm havin but she does'nt like the idea of no bread... no wheat product...she loves her cereal. I did recommend that she reads the book but she prefers to do her own thing. She loved Bawdy's dip with fresh cauliflower florets. Sharon is a type 1 diabetic and recently she had to cut back on the dosage of humalog/humalin because she reduced her food intake. I think my PP is rubbing on her a bit. By the way, you can't go wrong with a new dress...lol

Bigshot, glad to see you updated your stats! That dip really is good, and I also usually have it with raw cauliflower or broccoli to scoop it up. Mixed with eggs, though, is heavenly. I've had it every morning.

Unity, no fair! If you get to run away, I get to come too! But no slimy fish for me. I do like fishing -- always have -- but it's bass and panfish for me. I hate slime. We do catch pickerel frequently, and I always take an old towel so I can don't have to touch them to take them off the hook!

unity-- yes, we actually do take visitors/volunteers out with us. but the boat is not big enough for a class....just one at a time. yellow perch taste good too. we should go fishing simetime, it seems like all i CAN catch is those stupid bass. no matter what i am targeting, i catch bass.

bawdy-- thats funny about the slime rag.... actually when i was a kid i used to do the same thing. me and my sister had a deal, she would bait my hook (i hate worms) and i would take the fish off the hook. when i was a kid i hated getting my hands dirty. sometimes at work i think to myself (especially when i have fish slime from ear to ear and smell like bait and fish goo) "if my mother could see me now....."

Eat hearty Unity.. one day you may catch a steak! yummy!
I agree. The steak around here is excellent!

I don't mind any fish except the slimy ones like pickerel. My favorite fish to eat is yellow perch. They're very wormy here, so you can't eat them. When I was in Michigan, though, they were caught in the Great Lakes and frequently on restaurant menus. Even now when I go back to visit, if perch is on the menu, perch in on my plate! (Edited to fix a major gaffe! The perch are caught on the Great Lakes, they are NOT frequently caught on restaurant menus!)

My food choices have been better lately. I took what was left of the loaf of LC bread and threw it in the freezer. I start the day with Bawdy Eggs (love them suckers!). Lunch has frequently been either leftover meat or ham and cheese rollups. Also, for the past week, I've been eating homemade cole slaw daily. So good! I'm lazy, so I use the pre-shredded cabbage (has regular cabbage, red cabbage and a tiny bit of carrot in it). Then I add a good helping of Carb Options "Miracle Whip" (0 carbs, and no trans fats), a bit of apple cider vinegar, and a bit of Splenda. All to taste. I add a little more of this or that, depending. So I'm having that about every day.

Veggies have entered my life again.

I'm also starting to take the Oil of Oregano again. I had stopped about a month ago because I figured allergy season was gone. Funny thing -- and I have no idea if it has anything at all with not taking the oil -- in the past month, it seems like my belly has "popped" a little. Not that it was ever flat, but lately it seems like it's sticking out more. The OoO is supposed to help with yeast, and many people who take it report that their formerly round bellies flatten out a bit (caused by getting rid of the yeast buggies).

So, I started back up the other day. I take 2 drops in water in the morning, and another 2 drops in the evening. I'll keep you posted.

Enough for now. I need to get going for work. They've opened up part of the bypass they've been building on my way to work, so my drive time is down slightly. When they open up the whole length, it will cut down dramatically. Like many country roads in Maine, the one I drive to work on is only 2 lanes and very winding. So, if you happen to get behind a slow driver, a logging truck, or a mobile home, forget it! Most of the new bypass is 4 lanes, which is truly a good thing.

Have a great day, and make good choices. I know, I sound like someone's mother. But you know what? I think I am older than most if not all of you guys. So from now on, you can call me Bawdy Mama!

Also, thanks for the all the advice on the dress. I am leaning towards a new one. Bawdy Mama - I just ordered a bunch of things from Chadwick's sale. I love shopping in their catalog. I'm thinking about trying Ross first or at least a good sale elsewhere.

Bigshot - Aaah, I guess we're the lone PP in our families! lol! I've noticed that when I fix waffles or pancakes for my family (no, I don't eat it) they reach for the cottage cheese and breakfast meat too, and they don't eat near as much starch in the mornings as they use too.

I've decided to standardize my stirfry so that it will be measured more accurately with respect to carbs and calories. So here goes: 1/2 cup or 1/2 rib of chopped celery, 1/2 cup of chopped zucchini, 1/2cup chopped green onions, 1/2 cup chopped mushrooms. I can easily eat these 2 cups of veggie for a total of 7.8g carb. From there I can easily add the respective values od additional food like tofu, meats, etc. Now for the calories, these two cups of veggies stirfried in 1 tbsp of olive oil (125cal) total to:145cal. I think that I have been adding too many calories in the form of cheese, meat and oil. I will try this for awhile.

Now I finally got to understand fitday a lot better, especially the activities section and I started will walking exercise. I used my GPS(global positioning system) to establish particular interesting and scenic routes in my area. The numbers like total distance of the walk, the average speed and the time it took are displayed. These numbers are then entered on fitday who figures out my daily calories burnt by walking. Neet hey...

Bigshot
Fri, Jul-16-04, 10:58
With further investigation into the stirfy I came to the conclusion that I MADE A MISTAKE with the calories... here goes....1/2 ccup celery 9cal, 1/2 cup zucchini 20cal, 1/2 cup chopped onoins 30cal, 5 radish 5 cal, 1/2 cup mushrooms 20cal, 1tbsp olive oil 125cal. Now this all adds up to 209calories. Not bad... should I bother with that or still just consider the carbs and ignore the calories .....maybe I'm just looking for ways to complicate the matter...lol

Aw, shucks. Bigshot, I love you, too!

All these uses for the Bawdy Dip. Has anyone else tried it? You don't know what you're missing!

Bigshot, I like Fitday, and even ordered the PC version for $20. It really is a bargain, in that it has a lot of features that the online version doesn't have. I think there's a place on the site where you can see a demo.

As I said, I like Fitday, but it does engender obsessive-compulsive behavior. You are doing amazingly well. I don't think you can do better if you tried, so don't try. I found I had the most success when I didn't worry about every little thing. Remember those charts I posted? When I used them and nothing else I had my best success.

It's hard, though, not to become totally engrossed in all this, but you can't let it rule your life.

Elaine, GAWD but you're old! Sorry, I couldn't resist!

I sure don't feel that old (49). I take that back. TODAY I feel that old. I had one of those weeks where on Monday you look at what absolutely needs to be accomplished by Friday, and you think there no way, NO WAY, that it can possibly be done by Friday. And then with each day, more and more gets added to it that ALSO has to be done by Friday. And then 2:30 on Friday afternoon comes, and you realize . . . <cue the Hallelujah chorus> . . . it's done.

You guessed it. I'm brain dead.

Then I come home and find four . . . count 'em, four . . . emails from you know who. I'm so confused over all this, I don't know whether to be overjoyed or what. I refuse to get my hopes up over anything, so that makes it even harder to know what I really feel.

I know others have gone through this, but DANG it's hard. I don't know what to think anymore. I don't know what I do think. It's not that I'm numb (or maybe I am). It's not that I feel nothing. I feel total confusion and frustration.

Bigshot, you're new here. Last Friday night marked 3 months since my husband of 25 years walked out the door with no explanation. Only casual emails since, none addressing any issues, only things like how's work and how are the pets.

OK, you're up to speed.

Bawdy needs a hug.

So sorry Bawdy, after 25 years, I think I can imagine how emotionally devastating you must feel. I have been married with the same and only woman for 36 years and there are time when we almost separated. We later admitted to each other that we cried and felt profoundly hurt and that we would never put each other through that again. Maybe time will heal it for you.

Thanks, Bigshot. It really came out of the blue. I had no clue. I left for work one morning, kissed him goodbye, came home early to spend some "quality" time with him, and he said he was leaving. Said he hasn't loved me for years. This despite the fact that on our 25th anniversary in November he told me he loved me (in addition to all the other times he said it) and that he'd marry me all over again, and bought me a 3-diamond anniversary ring. A month before he left, we adopted 2 kittens (at his insistence) from the local shelter. I could go on and on. It just doesn't make any sense. It truly came out of the blue.

The one thing I was sure of in my life that morning was that we loved each other and we would grow old and die together. I knew he had been unhappy for a while, but I thought it had to do with travel (he's a consultant and is on the road all the time), getting older (he's always had a thing about getting older), and some financial issues I won't go into here. I was convinced that at the core, we had a solid foundation of love.

And we may. He's confused right now. I'm giving him the time he needs.

OK. Enough about that.

Back on the Oil of Oregano for a couple days now, and I do believe the belly is down a bit. I had been feeling like things were getting tight. Well, this morning I put on my freshly washed "gauge" jeans -- you know, the ones that you gauge whether you're putting on inches again? Well, freshly washed and right out of the dryer, and they're still loose.

Doin' the happy dance! How come there's not a "happy dance" smilie?

Gotta run. The excavators will be here soon, and I have some chores to do outside before they come. They're great guys, hard-working and strong. Unfortunately, they're dumber than the rocks they're moving. They're working up near the house in some garden areas today, and supervision will definitely be required.

Wish me luck!

By the way, I just used the new spell-check feature. What a waste! It picked up all the coding for font, etc., and missed a word I intentionally misspelled! Oh well, I guess you have to walk before you run. Too bad, though.

Have a great day!

Hi B.S... ( lol..lol.. couldnt resist! )

Actually, I just checked "make my journal public".. and use the link provided.... I dont have the paid for version.

I generally TRY to keep my cals under between 1200-1700.. I dont like to go over 1700 .. hard for me to keep the carbs down when I go up in cals. I seem to be floundering a little bit the last week or so, just trying to get my footing.. Last month the weight loss kinda slowed down... only lost 5 lbs from June 13 to July 13 when I got measured at curves... lost 3.25 inches.. so basically I lost 1/2 of what I had the previous month.

Have fun at the lake.. :)

I am ants'n to get to the lake again..just cant get time to do it.. with only one day off..and my next weekend off from teaching I have booked a wedding party massage package.. the bride/mom and her bridesmaids.. .. maybe we can go to the lake afterwards... and camp til monday aftn... lot of work for only 2 days.. I like to go for a week or so.. but beggers cant be choosey

Unity, I didn't know what you meant when you said you have lasik the other day. I got it now! Doh. That's great. I've always wondered about that surgery. I've worn glasses since age 12. Got contacts at age 16 and have been wearing them ever since. I now wear bifocal contacts, but am beginning to need extra reading glasses for tiny print. At least there are some really cool half glasses out there.

Big Shot, 135 pounds on an 8-year-old is way too much -- you're right about that -- but I really don't think you can use the hip-to-waist ratio on an child. You're smart, though, to get her exercising. It really pains me to see so many overweight children chugging down 64-ounce Cokes and eating all the time. These kids are being set up for a lifetime full of weight problems. Even if the child is skinny and is seemingly "handling" all the junk food, it catches up with them. It caught up with all of us, after all! There are a few -- very few -- that can handle all this junk food and not gain weight, but then again how is their health otherwise?

One of the best gifts we can give the next generation is the knowledge to eat healthy foods in moderation.

Why do kids have to be munching on Goldfish crackers, or Cheerios, or whatever all day long? I have friends who can't go anywhere without a whole bag full of food. And I'm not talking about long trips, I'm talking about driving 10 minutes. I can understand having a little snack ready in an emergency, but these kids get food each and every time they get in the car! And I go visit their house, and 9 times out of 10 I see them running around with crackers and juice.

Sorry, this is just one of my pet peeves. I probably shouldn't even have an opinion on this, since I don't have kids, but I do feel strongly about this.

Edited to add: What kind of "diet" do they have her on? I've read that traditional diets (read: low-fat) are not good for kids. The Eades (the husband and wife team of doctors who wrote Protein Power) raised 2 boys on the plan, and they report the kids are strong and robust. You've seen amazing results. Have you spoken with the parents about it?

There's a forum on this board dedicated to students and teens. Here's the link: http://forum.lowcarber.org/forumdisplay.php?f=120

Also, try doing a search on words like "kids" or "children." You might also try checking out the Eades' own web site at eatprotein.com.

Have fun at the lake! I'll be spending the day doing landscaping chores. The excavators are done now, except for laying down some fill and topsoil and then seeding. The heavy work is done, so now I have the cleanup of fixing the adjoining garden beds, etc. I might even try to take a couple days of work this week to get things in shape before they get out of hand again.

Hi guys! I've been MIA lately due to a new addiction that I have recently picked up....reading!!!! I am obsessed. I've been waking up early to read, bringing a book to summer school to fit in during breaks, and staying up late just to get in a little more. The first book that hooked me is called The Time Traveler's Wife and the second was the DaVinci Code. I read the second in 2 days, and it was 400 pages long. And these weren't even days that I didn't have anything to do. Anyway, I thought I should give it a rest b/c I want to check in with you guys.

Other than my new compulsion, things are going well. I have one more week of summer school, and then my summer actually begins. August is my free month, which is perfect with the approaching Olympics. I am SOOOO excited about the announcement tonight about which which girls they have selected for the gymnastics team.

Lissette-I believe you asked me awhile ago what my typical menu has been looking like since my incorporation of some grains. Basically I eat very simple breakfasts and lunches, cottage cheese/eggs/sliced tomato, salads with chicken/cheese/veggies, and then indulging a little more at dinner. Sometimes I have something whole-grain, like a slice of bread, a little pasta, some oatmeal, a pita, or else I will have a ton of fruit, blueberries especially right now. Everything has been kept very simple.

Bawdy-I've been meaning to ask you about oil of oregano. Why did you originally begin taking it? Where do you buy it, what kind do you buy, how much do you take? What other effects have you had in addition to the flatter stomach? I've seen that it is a popular topic of conversation on other boards but haven't ever gone through the posts. I think I heard somewhere that it is good if you have acne, which is why I am most interested. Thanks!

Bigshot-I also think that you are doing a wonderful thing for your granddaughter taking her for walks. I am right up there with Bawdy on her soapbox about being mortified about what our children are eating. I see it every day as a teacher in a middle school. It's horrifying the choices they give the kids. There is no limit for them. They can have whatever they want, and they do. About half the kids who buy their lunches choose wonderful combinations, such as Reese's cups, potato chips and a sugary drink. It makes me really mad. There are so many kids that are overweight, so many more than I remember when I was that age in school. I would NEVER buy my lunch at the cafeteria. It's just so sad that our country has come to this. You are a special person to care this much about helping her make better choices now in her life. Good luck to you.

How the heck did you get your insurance to pay for it?

And thanks, Karen, for the additional link. I figured there must be tons (excuse the pun) of information around regarding kids and low-carb eating.

Wendy, I started taking the OoO strictly for my nasty eye allergies, as well as to help with the yeast infection I suspected I have (I scored extremely high on the test). I don't think it's a miracle cure, but it does seem to help with certain things. I don't think it helps with general weight loss or even to get past a stall. If weight loss ensues, I believe it's probably because of a yeast infection. When the yeast dies, it leaves your system.

Someone explained it to me like this. (Fair warning, I'm about to use the "s" word again, this time not in connection with flaxseed.) When you get a cold or an allergy, etc., it's a virus. The virus is quite small, but it can cause your body to put lots of . . . here it comes . . . snot. Gallons of it, it sometimes seems. Same with yeast. It's a little infection, but the yeast causes your body to produce lots of "yeasty snot." This is why your stomache gets pouchy (that and the gas it produces). When you take something, like OoO to kill the yeast, it plus the snot gets expelled, and your tummy gets smaller.

Now that may be WAY off base, but it kind of makes sense.

There's a lot of info on the web. Google on "oil of oregano" and see what you get.

Back to chores.

hey guys.

things are going well here. it has been a busy weekend helping a friend of ours move into their new house. they are they kind of people who when you show up to help them move, they hand you an empty box and you end up packing them AND moving them. needless to say, we will be back over there this afternoon. this time we told them we would show up in the afternoon (hopefully when the boxes are full!!)

i am heading out of town on monday for the week so you will not be seeing much of me. going to roseburg, or. not one of my favorite places that we go, but by far not the worst!! the good part is that the place is a fairly big town, so food choices will not be a problem, and the motel is right near a park/paved bike trail, so excercise should not be a problem either. now the question, is will MY choices be good!!! hehe i hope so!!

Hi all, and especially Unity who can read this without her glasses

Just did a 2 mile WATP tape, first time in ages. Boy , this surgery thing really knocked me for a loop, I used to do that tape easily. I am really sweating!

Bawdy, what brand of OofO do you take?
Are you getting any outdoor work done today? It's raining buckets in eastern PA.

Hi Wendy. Did you like The Davinci Code? I must be the only person in the US who hasn't read it yet.I'll have to reserve it at the library.

PS, Bawdy the fish recipe I put in your journal turned out good :) For the rest of you, here it is . It's froma tilapia website that I googled for.
Pecan Crusted Dijon Tilapia
4 tilapia filets
1/2 cup mayo (not low fat)
1/4 cup Dijon mustard
1 tsp. butter (or Pam spray)
1/4 cup finely chopped pecans

Spread butter on metal baking pan. (I used ceramic, came out ok)
Place filets on pan.
Combine mayo and Dijon and spread on filets.
Sprinkle with pecans.
Bake at 375 for about 10 minutes unless filets are extra large, then add about 2 minutes.

Bawdy-Thanks for the info. I will go do a search and see what I can find. I used to be all about supplements, but I found out quickly that the hype never lived up to much in reality. Usually I was just left with a hole in my pocket:)

Acipenser-Sounds like you are getting quite the workout today moving your friends into their new home. Have fun on your week away, and we look forward to hearing all about your the good choices you made eating as well as your working out adventures!

Elaine-The WATP tapes ARE hard if you haven't done them in awhile. Right now I am doing the Winsor Pilates tapes w/ the resistance band. They are TOUGH, much more intense than the original set. How have your new Pilates tapes been going? Yes, I strongly recommend the DaVinci Code. I, too, am one that takes forever to get on the bandwagon with something. I never read Harry Potter until the 4th book was already out. It just didn't sound like something I would be interesting in. The only reason I read it was b/c it was required reading for my Children's Lit class, and then I was hooked. This was my second attempt at starting the DaVinci Code. I had read the first chapter before and for whatever reason, didn't go further. This time I couldn't stop myself from reading. I found the book fascinating. My mom loved it. My sister thought it was dumb and basically full of lies. She is a lot like my dad, though, and he just turned up his nose as I described to him the concept. It's probably not for you if you don't ever want to question the past. Now, there may not be 100% truth to it (it is a fictional novel afterall), but it raises many questions regarding history, religion (specifially Catholicism, and I am Catholic), and secret societies. I think that it is very well researched and am totally intrigued by the possibilities it suggests. Maybe that is just the naivity of me. Maybe it's just b/c I have lived in a bubble my whole life and never given my religion an ounce of thought or ever questioned anything, but I find myself now CRAVING information. Well, I have to go work on reading some more of the "prequel" now, Angels and Demons. Have a good one!

RE: the OoO.

I got it from General Nutrition Center. I think it's the Nature's Made line. It's a liquid and comes with a dropper. I take 2 drops in water in the morning, and 2 drops at night. Some people say it flavors the glass you put it in, so I use the bathroom Dixie cups.

On my fourth margarita, so it's getting difficult to type coherently. Catch you all tomorrow.

Hi everyone I have been MIA lately. Have been busy with the kids and just never seem to get to the computer. Work has been crazy. We were getting cancelled a lot at the hospital as the patient census was down so I over scheduled myself, now the census is up so I am now getting more time than I usually do. I won't complain when the check comes with the $$$.

Lately, I have not been following strictly LC. I have been having some problems. Lately, my legs have been having cramps and lots of aching. I have been running lots lately. I have been supplementing with Potassium twice a day. I am going into see my doctor tomorrow b/c even after laying off the running and upping my carbs my legs still ache. This is even after a short walk or climbing the stairs. I need to check it out and make sure nothing else is going on. I am really bummed b/c I was just starting to enjoy the running. I will be back but it will take time to build back to the 3 miles.

Bigshot, welcome!! Help your granddaughter by sawing her that exercise is an important part of life. It is a great lesson to learn early. Tread cautiously on dieting, with children it is best to seek help from physicians. Kids need levels of protein, fat, and carbs in order to have healthy growth. Actually, if she cuts down on sugar and white flour she will appreciate a weight lose. Keep up your good work. You will serve as a great example for both exercise and healthy eating.

Bawdy, the dip sounds great. Will try it soon. Hope things will get better soon. Keep your head up.

Hey, granny are you enjoying that baby. She sounds like she is doing well. She is bigger now than my daughter was when she came home for the hospital ( She was 5# even, hubby kept saying she looked like she had chicken legs. My biggest baby was 6# 1 oz). Enjoy her!!!!!

Everyone else, hello I will try to catch up more later. Try to keep up. Leaving on Thursday for 10 days at the cottage no computer. Keep up the work.

Well I didn't go to whitefish lake yet...you see, my friend the hobby farmer needed a hand haying his fields...He phoned me early this morning and I couldn't say no cuz we are good friends and friends help each other... The hay that had been cut was damp underneath and it needed to be raked over to allow drying. Then came the baling and pickup by hand. I'll tell you, after this, I don't know if I got enough finger tips left to tie my line when I go fishing. I came home around 9pm and I was glad to see my youngest boy (34yo) with a nice catch of fish... 2 nice four pounder bass... 2 brook trouts and 2 nice pink meat lake trouts. Everybody came back to town to attend a funeral of a good friend's mother who just passed away. She just lived down the street. Then, I still have to put my camper on my truck before I head out to the lake....Who knows maybe we won't leave until Tueday sometime...afterall I might need a few days to recuperate after picking up those bales a good part of the day...Heck, I'm going to bed...

Just a quick hi to everyone!!!

Summer time this year sure has been crazy hasnt it?

Summer factoids I gathered:

~ Watermelon is actually a VEGETABLE! It is from the botanical family Cucurbitaceae and is most closely related to cucumbers, pumpkins and squash. The watermelon is composed of 92% water and early explorers often used hollowed out watermelons as canteens.

~ In 1905, an 11-year-old boy named Frank Epperson invented the first Popsicle. He created it completely by accident. Frank accidentally left a mixture of powdered soda and water, with a stirring stick, on his porch. He awoke the next morning and found a frozen pop! He first named his frozen pop an "Epsicle", but when he got older his kids asked for "Pop’s" sicle and the new name was born. Popsicles are more popular than ever today, with Cherry being the number one favorite flavor.

~ The first "bathing suits" for women were introduced in the early 1800’s. At that time it was still considered improper for skin to be any color but creamy white. The first "suits" were composed of long sleeved bathing dresses with woolen bloomers underneath to weight the dress down. The only "swimming" a woman did at that time was to jump waves at the edge of the water and dip her feet, and occasionally legs, into the water.

~ The Frisbee was originally designed as a tin pie plate in the 1870’s. It was a marketing scheme to encourage homemakers to see the name "Frisbee" on the pie tin and think how much easier it would be to buy a pie instead of making one. Eventually, Mr. Frisbee’s pies were sold all over Connecticut. In the 1940’s, Yale students began tossing the pie tins to one another in a game of catch. The game caught on throughout the campus. About 10 years later, the president of Wham-O saw the pie-tin tossing fun at Yale. He saw this as a toy he could easily market. There were issues with the tin, so the plastic disc was born. Because of the craze of UFOs during this time, the plastic disc quickly became known as a "flying saucer".

Hi everyone, saw the doctor this morning and nothing is evident. She did do so lab work. Checking potassium, thyroid, Vitamin D deficiency and for fibromyalgia. She should have most stuff back before we leave on vacation. I don't know how much I will get back into running before we leave. I think I will just plan to do lots of walking back and forth in the lake. I love to go tread water in the middle so that will have to do. If the mosquitos aren't to bad I usually try to walk.

I hate this feeling. My legs hurt before I get up. The aching atleast isn't getting worse.

I need to clean the house and get some things done so I will get back later....

Good memory Wendy :) Yes, I had similar problems. If you are experiencing muscle cramps in your calves, it is mostly like potassium. If your legs are just aching and hurting it could be your lower back. If the nerves in the lower back pinch or become inflamed the pain from this doesn't always appear in the back. For me, it was in my hip and pain shooting down my legs, real bad at night. I ended up getting a shot in lower back and it was amazing.....3 days later no pain. I started having pain again in December, mainly in my lower back and my legs would ache. I went through the muscle relaxers and was miserable. I started going to Yoga in February....it turned out to be a godsend. Back pain is gone!

HTH :)

By the way, Shubie, how much potassium are you taking? When I'm having leg cramps, I take two 99mg tablets in the morning, and another two in the evening. In one of the PP books I think it says you can safely take up to 6 tablets a day.

What kind of cheeses did you use? You need to soften the cream cheese. Did you follow the recipe exactly -- other than the pimientos, that is?

I've NEVER had it turn out too solid. If anything, it tends to leak water because of the spinach.

Where's everyone lately? Since Monday, it's been me, Unity, and now Dawn. I think several people are out of town this week, right?

I'm taking a couple days off. Was planning on working outside, but it's so blesesd humid, it's probably not even safe to do so. Safe? That's it! Just the excuse I've been looking for!

So yesterday I alternated between reading in my screened-in porch with the fan blowing on me, with laying out in the hazy sun. The Eades would be proud. Although I'm staying in the sun longer than they suggest, I'm not burning. I'm not using any chemicals, either. Just as I don't like taking a lot of chemicals internally (in the form of processed foods, medications, etc.), I don't like slathering chemicals on my skin either.

I use very little, even for the high-maintenance gal everyone thinks I am. I use an eye cream (day and sometimes night), a very light moisturizer on my face during the day (a heavier one at times -- usually in the winter -- at night). For makeup I use a brand of "mineral" makeup. All natural ingredients, no chemicals. It looks like pressed powder, but gives a nice sheer, but even coverage. A tad of blush (same company), and then some eye makeup, and that's it. I also use a very basic light lotion (Nutraderm -- about the mildest you can get, made by the makers of Cetaphil lotion) on my legs, arms, etc., but not every day.

And for those rough heels, the very best thing in the world is cuticle cream. Try it! At night, rub a generous amount in, and then put on socks for bed. In the morning, rub in a more modest amount and then go on with your day. I promise that in less than a week, your heels will be smooth. You can also use a pumice rock in the shower, but do it at the end so that the skin has soaked up plenty of water to soften the skin a little.

What this has to do with the low-carb lifestyle, I don't know.

Just a few beauty secrets from your own Bawdy!

Hi, I'm not out of town, I've just been considering a different WOE. I found a website that does the Zone but you don't have to count the clocks, etc, it does it for you, it has great recipes, I can choose low glycemic, etc. It's sort of like a Fitday for the Zone. I PM'd Renee about it to check it out, it costs 14.99 for 3 months, 39 bucks for the year. I probably spent that much on food that I've overeaten or thrown out, not to mention LC ice cream. I took the 3 months to see if I like it. Renee also said she has read that people with hypothyroid do not do well on very low carb WOEs.
So I'm going to give it a shot for a few weeks to see how I feel. I will still drop by the Java thread to check in with you guys even though it's not strictly PP. :)
Elaine

PS Bawdy, I did the no sunscreen for an hour thing last weekend too. I didn't burn.

BawdyWench
Thu, Jul-22-04, 07:57
I was out yesterday for a total of about 3 hours, and no burn. On the weekends when I cut the grass and do the outside chores, I'm out for about 5 or more hours. Still no burn.

Let us know how you do on the other plan. No plan works for everyone. Just be sure to give it time to work. A couple of weeks is not enough. Stick to it for the entire 3 months before deciding. But do check in here so we can know how you're doing.

PS: Wasn't it you, Elaine, who makes the ricotta pancakes? I just made some from a Dana Carpender recipe. Called for 2 eggs, 1/2 cup ricotta, 1/4 cup whey protein powder, 1/2 tsp baking powder, and a dash of salt. Pretty bland. I didn't even eat it all.

What recipe do you use?

Hi Bawdy, no I don't make ricotta pancakes. Sometimes I make the mock danish with eggs and cream cheese, I add Davinci Vanilla syrup and a little splenda. I've been making almond pancakes that I like-
5T almond meal/flour,
1T sour cream,
1 egg,
1/2 Tsp baking powder,
1T water ,
2 T oil (I use 1),
splash of Davinci (calls for french vanilla, I have reg vanilla) and
splenda.
I've even added fresh blueberries. They're quick, I've made them on workday mornings. Mix up the batter, let it set while you get the coffee going, cook them while the coffee's brewing.

Hi everyone, I have been lc for just this week..i thought atkins was the way to go but then someone suggested I do PP as i lift weights 3x a week and cardio 4x and they think i need more carbs etc. I am a good cook but i am trying to make this as simple as i can at first so i eat alot of salads, I love the sub-way baby spinach and chicken ones. So so far i have been having eggs and bacon with coffee for breakfast...carbwise yogart or a smoothie for am and pm snacks, and a good salad for dinner...on the weekends i will grill and have steak, chicken, or pork chops or my favorite bbq ribs. I still drink a few diet cokes and have been drinking fruit20...i noticed there is some sucralose in it...isnt that bad???
I am using fitday to track my food which is around 2000 calories, 140 fat and 160 protein..none of the meals are over 7 carbs. I do not have the pp book and probably couldnt understand most of it anyway...i am 5'11, 216 pounds male...am i eating enough protein? I hope to bond with you all through my journey...I hope this works!

Hey! :)

I have made them occasionally.. but I do not use the whey powder, simply cause I dont have any... I use the atkins bake mix in place of it.

Here is one version, but to be honest, I just kinda 'toss' together 2 eggs, some splenda, cinnamon, vanilla ex. then I use my sf homemade strawberry jam on them, and sometimes I have thrown them into my waffle maker.

Ricotta Pancakes
10 servings

Ingredients:
4 large Eggs
1 cup Ricotta cheese
1/2 teaspoon Vanilla extract
1/3 cup soy protein isolate -- Soy flour (atkins bake mix or similar)
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 pinch nutmeg
1 packet splenda

Here's another version:

Yield:4
Ingredients:
Amount Ingredient
3 x eggs
3 tbl Atkins Bake Mix
1/4 tsp salt
1/3 cup heavy cream
3/4 cup ricotta cheese
1/4 cup sugar-free any-flavor fruit preserves
1 pkt sugar substitute

Instructions:
Instructions: In a medium bowl, whisk eggs, bake mix and salt until smooth. Gradually whisk in cream. Let stand 5 minutes.

Press ricotta through a fine sieve into a small bowl. Mix in fruit spread and sugar substitute.

Melt butter in a small nonstick skillet over medium heat. Pour in 2 tablespoons batter and tilt pan coat bottom. Cook until golden on bottom; turn over. Cook 1 minute more. Transfer to a plate. Repeat with remaining batter.

Spread pancakes with ricotta mixture and roll up.

This recipe yields 4 servings.

Description: "The cheesecake-inspired filling is not too sweet to serve for brunch. Once youve mastered making the pancakes, vary the flavor of the filling by trying different fruit spreads."

Hey guys! I am still here. Just finished teaching summer school today. Other than two all-day classes next week, I officially no responsibilities for about a month. That's a scary thought. Must find more things to read. Just finished Angels and Demons, very good.

Elaine-I am glad to see you post, and I hope that you will continue to do so, no matter what you choose to do. I am currently playing around with things to include many more grains than I had been eating in the past, and it seems to be agreeing with me. It is why I am not posting so much about myself, but I will always be a part of this group and will be here for others. I think your idea to try the Zone is an excellent one, mostly b/c of the thyroid issues. I was unable to lose at an extreme level of carbs, mostly b/c I could not maintain that level for any amount of time. My magic number is somewhere around 60g. It's very likely that the one of the reasons you have seemed to struggle so much is that you haven't yet found the right plan. I used to think that while doing Atkins, my problem was a lack of will power, and I would just keep restarting over and over, only to end up bingeing and ending right back where I started. Why on earth would I keep doing the same thing and foolishly think I would get different results? I see a lot of me in you in that way. I see you get sooo motivated and have great intentions, but for whatever reason, you aren't able to stay on plan. I don't believe that it is merely because we are weak. I believe that it is b/c you haven't yet found the best way to heal and take care of your body. If you haven't done the Zone yet, it is definitely worth a shot. But you have to give it everything you have and try it for an extended amount of time, like Bawdy said. Since you've been dealing with so many things, it's likely that once you find your ideal plan, you won't lose at first. There might be a time period for your body to heal its metabolism before it finally lets go of the unwanted fat. So give it a fair shot, and definitely check in with us and let us know how it is going. We want you to succeed!!!!

Bawdy-Just out of curiosity, do you know anything about the "Slow Burn" method of weightlifting? It sound interesting to me b/c it only requires 1-2 days per week and 20-30 mins per session of a very intense, slow weightlifting routine. At first it sounded like hooey, but it reminds me of how the Eades describe the ideal way to work out in Protein Power. They always stressed strength training and said that it didn't need to be done that often to really see results.

Mark-Welcome! Your protein amount sounds good to me for a man of your size and activity level. You definitely want to make sure that you are getting enough. How fast have you been losing weight? If you have been losing very quickly, you may want to experiment with increasing the carbs a bit. You should be able to have a higher tolerance b/c you are male and exercising so much. Although, if you feel great right now and are happy with how things are going, maybe you should just stick with what you are doing, the whole, if it ain't broke, don't fix it mentality. You seem to be on the right track!

Hi, all! Just popping in one more time before shutting down (both the computer and me!).

Wendy, good to hear from you. I just finished Angels and Demons also! Then I read another of his books, Digital Fortress. Very good, both of them.

Mark, welcome aboard! I agree with Wendy that you're getting plenty of protein. Don't feel hesitant about getting and reading the book. You'll get a lot more out of it than you think. Even if a chapter is a bit in-depth, they include chapter summaries at the end that . . . you guessed it . . . sum it all up!

The first book, Protein Power, lays out the basics of the plan. The second book, Protein Power Lifeplan, goes into a lot more detail about certain things, including exercise.

As Wendy mentioned, the Eades are proponents of what is called "slow burn." It's where you do sets at extremely slow rates. It takes 10 seconds to do a rep. I've tried it, and although in theory it might be good, I like the way I feel when I work out more.

I'm going through an extremely difficult time right now (husband left me 3 1/2 months ago with no explanation and no warning), and I've let my exercise regimen slack. Just today I hit the Bowflex again for an intense upper-body workout and already I feel more empowered. I've always been a aerobics kind of gal, but a couple years ago I did a full 12-week challenge in the Body for Life program. I loved it! The way weight-lifting makes you feel, it's amazing.

What I don't understand is how I let it slide after feeling so good and so empowered. I guess we're all human.

So I urge you to get the books and read them. It will tell you why you should be avoiding certain things and why you should be indulging in other things. In the end, you'll be a lot more successful than trying to wing it. Knoweldge is power, after all!

Good luck, and check back in as often as you can to let us know how you're doing!

Wendy, thanks so much for your post, you're right. that's an exact description of what I've been going through.I will give it a good shot, as I can eat fruit and veggies and a little oatmeal, etc and might not get as bored as I've become. I'm almost afraid to eat anything other than meat, cheese, eggs and a little salad and of course LC ice cream for emotional comfort when I fail at what I'm doing. :o

I had seen a piece on tv a while back about Barbara Walters and Leslie Stahl doing the slow burn thing. Not sure if it was 48 hrs or 20/20 but maybe you could do a search.

Hi Mark! As you can see, we're very supportive of whatever we are all doing at the moment in search of our WOE and just a pat on the back or a virtual hug when you need it.

Edited to add: Wendy-here's the slow burn link:http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/11/20/48hours/main584762.shtml

well ladies i started to watch the carbs about a week ago but really am focusing on it this week...i usually weighed around 222 give or take,,,,I am at 216 but i know its water weight... today I have eaten:
2 fried eggs, 6 slices of bacon..coffee for breakfast
spinach and chicken salad from subway(i love this salad)
low carb yogurt for afternoon snack
3 strips of bacon (snack while mowing lawn)
12 ounce tbone for dinner and low carb yogurt.
2165 cals....160 fat...165 protein.

Does anyone see a problem with the carb countdown smoothies or yogurts...i need a bit of variety and they really do help...some
people dont believe in them but i fugure if it works i will buy them.

Good morning! It's so nice to have the day off today. There's endless possibilibilities, but I'm thinking of finding a new book to dive into.

Bawdy-What did you think of the ending to Angels and Demons? I totally thought I had it all figured out and then it completely threw me! Obviously Robert Langdon had to survive to the Da Vinci Code, but it was a bit farfetched that he actually made it. I definitely have to get my hands on The Digital Fortress sometime soon.

I totally can relate to your inconsistencies with exercise. I feel amazing when I work out, especially intensely, yet I somehow let laziness and tiredness get the best of me at times. I seem to go in phases, alternating periods of complete determination where I never miss a work out, but then I will allow myself a day off and not return for weeks or months. I think the trick is to not think of it as an all or nothing thing, at least for me. I frequently try to do too much at once and then just cannot keep up that intensity. I have been maintaining my 3-4 times per week of doing Pilates, which seems to be just fine in terms of maintaining where I am at. I am not unhappy where I am at, but I know that I will have to do more if I want to see those last few areas of fat go away. I just haven't been able to motivate myself to move past this point:(

Elaine-I'm glad you are excited about this new plan. When do you plan on starting?

Mark-Many people enjoy the lowcarb yogurts. I have problems with them. I have traditionally gone through phases with artificial sweeteners. I have never been able to handle sugar alcohols, so I am referring to Splenda. I would buy DaVinci syrups, diet rite, gum, Splenda-sweetened yogurts, salad dressings, ketchup, etc, and find that I was NEEDING them at every meal. It seems that anything sweet tasting causes cravings and an insulin response with me. So then when I realize I have a problem, I go through a withdrawal period, which is further indication that I have a problem with them. Ususally out of boredom I have found myself returning to these products and repeating this cycle over and over. Right now I am not eating them. I hope that I can stay this way b/c I feel much more in control of my eating. This is just my personal experience however. If you do not experience an increase of cravings, then I say, eat away!

Hi everyone :) I weighed in on Wednesday, down 6 pounds!! While I am happy with the loss, my carbs were way too low and couldn't sustain my workouts :( This week I am increasing with some low glycemic fruits and a little grains. I also found these really good bars, Q-Smart by Quaker. Pretty tasty, 8 carbs per bar, 3 net. I am hoping I will continue to lose.

Mark - Welcome :) Your stats look really good, sounds like you are doing fine. Menu looks good too. I usually eat yogurt regularly without any problems.

Wendy - It is hard to establish a good exercise routine. I think you just have to find things you enjoy doing. I was way over doing the cardio, feeling like I had to do an hour. I couldn't sustain it and finally dropped back down to 30 minutes which is more that enough. I have had to force myself to go to the gym this week, think it is the heat and humidty :(

 to everyone :)

Mark, I agree that it looks like you're doing fine. Nothing is "bad" as long as it doesn't interfere with your perception of your progress. Some people would rather have a treat every day and lose slowly than to have to forego all their "rewards" and lose more quickly. To each his (or her) own. This is not to say that you are doing this -- I was just referring to your question regarding the LC yogurts, etc.

Thanks for your words of comfort. I'm the least religious person you're likely to meet, but I appreciate the thought behind your words.

Did I mention I did a full upper-body Bowflex workout yesterday? Who says I can't start up again where I left off about 4 months ago?

And whoever said it, next time please say it louder because today I'm in PAIN!!!

Right back doing 60-pound butterflyes and bench presses. Sheesh.

I bought fruit2o...i see inthe ingredients it has suclrose in it...is that bad????
Sucralose is the chemical name for Splenda, which is made from real sugar. It's the best artificial sweetener around, and the one the Eades (authors of Protein Power) recommend.

Well i am at work...5am...been up for 2 hours....i am not sleeping like i did before lc...but then i am exercising more also...
Thinking of making some baby back ribs today, the weather in mn is beautiful do i am going to try to enjoy it after i am done with this 6 hr overtime......anyway this is day 5 and i cant believe is am doing so good on this. Does anyone ever order
chicken wings in the restaurants..i was wondering if they are a safe option for like a dinner. I am going to NYC for a week in august which i am wondering how in the world i will be able to stick 100% on this...but then why worrry about that,,i have 3 weeks to go and i will survive...lol. Happy Saturday all.

BawdyWench
Sat, Jul-24-04, 05:37
I'm not a fan of wings, but most other people are. Just ask if they're breaded, and ask if the sauce is made with sugar. You can even ask for a taste of just the sauce (I'm sure they'll give it to you). You'll be able to tell right away if there's sugar in it. The hot sauces are less likely to have sugar in them.

It's really not all that hard to stick to a LC lifestyle when eating out. Many restaurants now carry "Atkins-approved" choices, but even when they didn't I never had a problem ordering.

Just get whatever meat/fish/poultry you want, and ask for either veggies or a salad in place of the fries/pasta/etc. Be careful on the veggies, though. Peas and carrots have more starch and sugar in them than other veggies. Also, some restaurants actually put sugar on their veggies! I know, strange but true.

Ok, Mr. Mark. We've answered your questions, now it's your turn to answer some of ours.

I'll go first.

I need some ideas on a lower-body (or lower-Bawdy! ) workout. I have tons of equipment here. I love my Bowflex, and I also have free weights and a couple gym "towers."

On the Bowflex, I do leg extensions for my quads, and lying leg curls for my hamstrings. With dumbbells, I do squats. I use dumbbells because it hurts my shoulders to hold a bar with weight there (you know, sort of at the back of your neck?).

The only thing I've done with calves is to stand on the edge of a step with dumbbells and then raise up on my toes, and then lower further than the level of the step to get a good stretch (and then a bigger range of motion on the way up).

What else do you think I should be doing? I should probably be doing some butt exercises, though the squats do work that area as well.

Any ideas?

I do the typical pyramid (Body for Life) routine of 12, then 10, then 8, then 6, then 12 reps, with increasing weight. For example, my butterflyes the other day went like this: 12 reps at 30 pounds, 10 reps at 40 pounds, 8 reps at 50 pounds, 6 reps at 60 pounds, and finally 12 reps at 50 pounds. Rest for about 30 to 60 seconds between sets.

I also do Pilates-like ab work, but not often enough, and usually during my stretching period rather than during the workout.

My upper-Bawdy workout on the Bowflex consists of bench presses, tricep curls (lying down), flyes, pullovers, lat pulldowns (3 variations), and bicep curls.

Can you think of anything else I should be doing?

lower-body (or lower-Bawdy!

Can't wait for the DVD-which outfit will you be wearing?

I just made my first zone meal. This will drive you crazy:
1 egg
1 egg white
3/4 oz bacon
1 cup blueberries,
1 cup strawberries,
1 T natural peanut butter.
(ok, this is what I have in the house) But I have this website I use, Formulazone.com that lets you plug in your ingredients ala fitday and tells you if it's zone balanced or not and if not, what you can add to make it balanced.
It's way easier than trying to do the traditional zone block thing. They have some pretty good recipes too.
Hey, I'm going to give it a chance.
Off to get my haircut in a few hours, the lovely and talented Elaine will drive by later this aft. :D

Gosh you are doing just fine on the exercises. I have a personnel trainer so i am doing 2 exercises for back, bi's, trys, and the abs m-w-f. alot of it is supersetting 2 at a time...at times with heavy weights...then others lower weights and many reps. It is working as i am making small setps each month. I have a damaged rotator cuff so I cant do chest or shoulder exercises. I have to give you credit for doing a routine by yourself...i couldnt do what i am doing by myself..i have to have the motovation and the push from someone else.
I do manage to do the cardio by myself...i hav ea lower back problem so i mainly walk 3 miles in 45 minutes, or swim.
It just amayzes me all the peopl at the gym that stand around or just sauna...and they have far better bodies than me...lol
I was in maine 3 years ago and loved it. We went to lobster festival in july and i ate ate ate lobster....i am on break from work...eating my 3 eggs and sausage...i feel like i could eat double this the am for some reason..well back to work!

Also your leg workout is exactely what the trainer has me doing....you might want to try lunges, they are great for the legs and butt...and so tough to do!

BawdyWench
Sat, Jul-24-04, 07:12
I've tried lunges, but hate them. Not necessarily because they're hard (thought they are), I always lose my balance. So, when I do them. I hold one heavy dumbbell in one hand, and then hold on to a broomstick with the other hand. Maybe I'll try adding that in.

I need to do the lower-body today, but am not feeling really good. Feeling a little flu-like, gastrointestinally, if you know what I mean. I'll still do the workout, but not any ab work. Also, I have a lot of outside work to do this weekend -- mowing the lawn, cleaning up gardens, etc. That's got to count for something.

So you like having a personal trainer? I just hate going to the gym -- not that there are any around here anyway! The closest is probably an hour away. I prefer working out at home, but having a nice hunky guy come and motivate me through my workout would sure be nice!

Hey Mark, whacha doing this afternoon?

simplydawn
Sat, Jul-24-04, 07:21
hearty echo of amen to hating lunges.. I hate them, and I hate the squat machine or anything that simulates that.

Maybe that was from the trainer at golds telling me to imagine going to the bathroom, sitting on the toilet.

Well considering, that I really do not enjoy 'bathroom' time.. I do not read mags, books or other such paraphinalia in that room, and often times I end up making several trips in there cause I do NOT have the patience to sit there idling time away.

Ok, nuff about my bathroom habits.. have a GREAT day all, I am off to teach.. 9 hour day.. we are doing a pot luck today, I made:

Broccoli Salad ala Dawn (he hee)

Package of broccoli already cut up for me ( lazy bum)
1/4 red onion chopped small
Walnuts ( probably 3 oz maybe less.. maybe more, didnt measure, just put in)
Almonds (same)
1/2 brick sharp NY cheddar cheese diced
1 apple of your choice, chopped small
Raspberry vinnegerette (2 carbs)

I hope others bring yummies that I can eat, if not I have some hard salami and cheese stick to munch on as well.... it will be the gooey FATTENING desserts that might be the killer temptation... .will see..

MUAH!

Love and Laughter,
Dawn

I sure Miss Orang!

Sat, Jul-24-04, 07:54
Just do the lunges without weights....start at 1 end of the room and go to the end,,,etc...i couldnt do many with weights...you will feel it.....yes i hated them and i had to stop due to the back thing,,,,,,but i am sure we will start again....
The only reason i stay on track with the exercise is due to the personnel trainer..i gave all of my home gym equipment away as i never used it. You would think i would look like a muscle man but alas...no, just regualr me. Every workout is aot of work, and hopefully it will pay off someday...i just need to drop 30 pounds and i would be very happy....

I've forgotten, what did you do to your back? Last March 31, I broke my back (2 lumbar vertebrae) when I slipped coming down the stairs. I worked very hard with weights and have no lasting after-effects. Well, I am starting to develop some sciatic pain on the same side as the breaks; not sure if it's related or not.

Dawn, I know what you mean about reading materials in "that" room. It all seems so Archie Bunker, you know?

That salad sounds delish! I'll need to try it sometime. Just got back from the grocery store. I try to go early so that I get all the meat markdowns.

I'm so into cole slaw these days. I could eat it twice a day every day, but try to limit myself to once.

OK, off for a walk with the dog (he runs, I walk), and then the lower-body workout. With lunges. Wish me luck.

Good afternoon! Weight is good today, 147.5 lbs. The copy of "Slow Burn" that I reserved at the library became available today, and I have just finished reading it. Very quick read and interesting as far as exercise is concerned. Now I understand that this is only one perspective on exercise, but I respect the sources, as it is partially written and endorsed by the Eades. Here is some of what I have learned:

-Just any physical activity should not be considered exercise. The only true exercise is strength training; everything else is either just something to do for fun or not worth our time.
-All physical activities are NOT good for you, especially traditionally touted aerobic-type activities, such as running (which is unusually hard on your body) and stretching (which actually messes up joints and creates a false illusion of increased flexibility.
-Being fit does not automatically equal health.
-By improving muscular strength and msass, which you can do directly with a properly performed strength-training program, you will indirectly improve the health of all the other systems in the body.
-Slow Burn emphasizes safety, effectiveness, and efficiency. Although you can easily complete a full Slow Burn workout in under 30 min, you will perform each exercsise with deliberate slowness. It's the elimination of momentum that's at the heart of the process, producing maximal strength gains with a minimal time investment. Studies have shown that slow-speed strength-training regimens achieve 50-100% greater strength gains than those in a traditional weight-lifting program. In a typical Slow Burn workout of a specific muscle group, you'll spend 60-90 min perfectly performing a single set of only 3-6 reps, at which point muscle failure results.
-The Slow Burn strength-training regimen will give you greater general cardiopulmonary fitness and endurance than running. Clearly, running will give you greater endurance for running, but not for such upper body exercises as rowing or tennis, whereas the total-body strength gains from Slow Burn will enhance your endurance in almost any athletic pursuit.
-The fact that increasing muscular strength can tremendously improve the "aerobic" condition of the heart and lungs is probably the most difficult thing to truly come to grips with b/c it seems so counterintuitive.
-Strong muscles, not stretching, make more flexible joints. The two most flexible groups of athletes at the Olympics are gymnasts and surprisingly, power lifters.

Like I said, I'd question the validity of the claims here if it weren't for the source of the information and research studies they cite extensively. I was very surprised by the info here and have a new resolve to really give strength-training another go. So, Bawdy, I'll be joining you in pumping that iron!

Am I the only one without a life here?!?!?!?!?

Did I mention the excavation guys cut up all the trees for firewood and stacked it for me? Idiots. They stacked it on a rack set up on uneven ground, and then stacked it higher than the rack. It was leaning precariously from the start, and as predicted, fell over last night. So today after . . . count 'em . . . the grueling lower-body working (with lunges, thank you very much), and the 4-mile walk up and down hills with the dog, I re-stacked a full cord of firewood.

Dang, this country life is tough! If only the people at work could see me now. They all think I'm a high-maintenance gal because I dress in suits and 4-inch heels. And, since I've lost the weight and am building a Bawdy body, those suits are hugging all the right curves.

Hey, if no one else blows my horn for me, I'll have to do it myself!

Mark-Most restaurants are extremely accomodating in terms of low carb. They usually have several choices available, or are willing to allow substitutions of veggies for potatoes or rice. Speak up, and you will usually get what you want! I try to stick to grilled and broiled meats wherever possible, sirloin steaks, chicken w/ melted cheese and mushrooms, grilled salmon, plus steame/buttered veggies and a salad (without croutons, and with dressings such as blue cheese, ranch or Italian). Wings are usually a safe bet if they are not breaded, as Bawdy indicated. If you know ahead of time which restaurants you will be attending, you can go to their websites and scrutinize their menus, which often have nutritional information available as well, if you are an overly obsessed planner like I am:)

Bawdy-Other lower body exercises that come to mind (if you don't want to do lunges) are dead lifts (where you hold weights in your hands and bend over forward and then stand up straight again), and all sorts of lateral leg lifts and circles that you can do on your side with ankle weights.

Elaine-How well did your initial Zone meals hold you? I remember when I tried the Zone that I initially felt very well-satisfied by the meal, but then felt hungry prematurely for the next one. I think it was b/c I wasn't taking in an optimal amount of protein and slightly too many carbs at one time. If you find you also have this problem, you may want to make adjustments of a bit more protein at each meal, and slightly less carbs, at least at first. Of course, you might feel wonderful eating this way, in which case I will just shut up now:)

Dawn-Your recipe sounds delish!

Bawdy-I have equally no life right now, hence reading 150 page book in one afternoon, and being glad to have something to fill up my time and occupy my mind. My DBF left for camp this morning and will not return till next Friday. Of course this is exactly the time that I am finally on vacation and have a ton of free time, so I must spend my time obsessing about my newest proclaimed passion, Slow Burn! It's so nice to have something new to figure out and try in my life. Of course I doubt that it will be as miraculuous as it seems, but it's nice to dream and who knows, I may become a fitness buff yet!

Bawdy-We have been dating for 9 months next week. I've never dated anyone longer than 9.5 months before!

I just got the necessary supplies to start Slow Burn tomorrow (bought a stopwatch and got a metronome from my parent's house). My sister made a comment that made me very mad. First of all, she rolled her eyes and said there is no point to strength-training. This coming from a girl who is the same height as me, 5'7", and a piddly 120 or so pounds. She eats whatever she wants and lays around and doesn't gain an ounce. She then added that I was being very vain. Vain? B/c I think that it is important to take care of yourself? I wasn't suggesting that she should do it, just that I was excited to try it. Is wanting to be healthy and look my best vain? I'm quite upset by her comment b/c I do not consider myself vain at all, but maybe I am....

Morning! Just finished my first "Slow Burn" workout. It kicked my behind!!!!! I have never felt my muscles shake before like they were today. The tough part is that you cannot stop doing any exercise till you reach failure, and literally cannot do anymore. You reach the point of not WANTING to do anymore significantly sooner than actual failure of the muscle. Wow! Good thing I will have until Wednesday to recover:)

Boy, did YOU hit it on the mark! That's EXACTLY what is happening to me. I think I need to be somewhere between the Zone and PP. Does that make sense? Like this AM I had mock danish with cottage cheese, 2 eggs, a slice of TJ reduced carb wheat bread. But for the amount of carbs I needed to make it zone, I added a cup of bluberries. THAT did it, I was ok until I ate the fruit. So Does this mean I need to do a 30-40-30 plan?

Morning! Wendy, I tried the slow burn, but in order to make my workouts a habit, I need to do them more often than once a week. It is an amazing workout, and I can see why they don't want you to do it more often.

Mark, I don't know what to tell you about the hunger. With all that fat and protein in relation to the 18 grams of carbs, you should be deeply into ketosis, and that usually means a LOSS of hunger. Just play around a little. Some people say that when you do intense weight training, you need more carbs. Just reporting what I've heard. Don't know if it's true or not.

Elaine, maybe you should modify the carbs a bit. If you're like me, though, you should drop the LC bread rather than the fruit. Grains do it to me every time. When I was doing Body for Life, they kept telling me I had to eat grains. So, I ate LC bread and oatmeal every day. Unfortunately, it set off cravings and I found my way inching back up the scale. Had I added carbs, but kept them to veggie and fruit carbs, I might have been ok.

Let us know what works for you.

Oh, and strangely enough, I'm not at all sore this morning from all the work I did yesterday. I thought for sure my thighs would be screaming. Gee, I thought I worked them hard.

What do you think? Do you have to hurt afterward to have had an effective workout?

Hubby and I are playing hookie, and just hangin out, eating some breakfast, and watching Head of State w/Chris Rock on tv... not sure what the rest of the day will bring... contemplating maybe going up to North Carolina, have a coupon for a free nite's stay at a hotel up there at the casino.. I dont think they allow pets tho.

Having pets can be worse than kids sometimes!

That slow burn sounds intense.

I am a little disappointed about this months weigh loss results.. I know we have one more week technically in the month, but I have only lost 4 lbs in July.. nothing about me and my body is EVER consistant and predictable..

Bawdy, I hear you re: the grains.
I have this gut feeling that I have to come up with my own plan. I am happier on the higher protein but have to keep portions and fat in check otherwise I pig out on toomuch meat and cheese . I may start with zone meals and play with the numbers, like Wendy suggested. I did notice, though, I have a little more energy with the higher carbs.
This is driving me crazy, everyone else seems to be able to follow a plan and stick to it! :o

Sun, Jul-25-04, 12:26
Um... I hear ya Elaine!

Free is good.. we only have to pay a $10.00 surcharge for using the coupon!
Found one that allows pets, so we are going to head up there with the pooches, and spend the night in the 'mountains'..find something to do, probably both spend about 50.00 each at the actual casino slots.. that is our usual limit. There are alot of other things to do up there ,but we normally get up there late in the day and things are closed....Then check out and come back tomorrow afternoon. Be nice not to have to drive back home after we play.. it's usually like 1 am or after when we leave and still have the 2 hour drive to come home..which at night takes about 1/2 hour longer cause of the winding twisty roads.

So.. kinda neat... guess I will go wash up and throw some stuff in a suitcase and head on outta here... Have a great day all.

i have been out of town this last week, extremely busy this weekend, and out of town again next week, then camping all next weekend.......bottom line, don't forget about me, i am still here and kicking.

mark-- welcome to the group.

i actually had a good week out of town last week. i ate well, and excercised 3 days. pretty darn good for me. i am getting tired of traveling though and am feeling the need for some at home time. ( i think the dbf is also...hehe). after next week, i have a week at home, then 2 more weeks out of town. then i think a couple of home weeks. i am pretty grateful that i get to come home on the weekends though. (and i love my job!!)

it is good to see you all posting, and it sounds like everybody is doing pretty good. good job bawdy on getting back into the workouts. i wish i had more time to catch up with everybody (i could just do a quick scan). have a great couple of weeks. i will catch up sometime in a week and a half or so!!!

oh yea, i was going to post about the lc yogurts. personally i hate them, i think they are so lacking in both texture and flavor. what i have grown to love is buying just plain yogurt and adding my own fruit, plus a little splenda. yummmm.

Elaine-I remember reading in "Master the Zone" that some people do better with one less block of carbs and adding one more block of fat at each meal. When I tried the zone, I was in the ballpark of around 90g carbs per day, too much for me! Maybe you would do better with a plan somewhere b/w Protein Power and the Zone, as you suggested. I know I personally did best at 50-60g carbs. It gave me tremendous variety to choose from, so long as I didn't go hog wild with the fats.

Bawdy-I don't know if it's mandatory to hurt for exercise to be effective. Hurting can also be a sign of pushing yourself too much, so I guess it depends. I think you are supposed to be the most sore two days after an intense workout, so let us know how you feel tomorrow. I am certainly "feeling it" as the day progresses, but I am sure this is mostly b/c I haven't done anything remotely resembling strength training in almost a year! I'm not sure what to expect from Slow Burn, b/c the book didn't really address the issue of soreness or recovery. It did talk about how you would reap the benefits from the workout for 4-5 days after. I definitely felt like my metabolism was boosted today. I had a totally lazy day and haven't even left the house. Normally this would mean several naps, especially since I was up before 7 am. Nope, no wanting of naps. And I was feeling quite warm this afternoon, so I took my temp and it read 99.1. Dont' know if that is in response to the workout, but I like to think that it's some kind of boost in my metabolism:)

Dawn-Maybe your body is in a state of transition right now, hence the slowed weightloss. Things will eventually slow down anyway, as you get closer and closer to goal. You just don't have so much fat to lose anymore!

Acipenser-You will have to tell us all about your adventures when you return from all your excursions:)

Starting to get a wee bit sore now.

By the way. Everyone should get ready for the end of the world. Yup. Armageddon. That's when weird, unexplainable things start to happen -- the first signs of the Apocolypse.

Here's why I think that. The other day I had a local contractor come to give me an estimate on trimming all my shrubs. He said $250. So he comes today, trims all the shrubs, cleans up after himself, AND ends up doing all my weed-whacking as well (and believe me, there is a ton of it -- maybe up to 10 times what a house in the suburbs has), and charges me $150 for the whole shebang.

Yup. He did twice the work, and ended up charging me just a little over half his estimate.

That's it. Something weird is definitely going on.

Wait! What's that I see? Another rider of the Apocolypse?!?!?!?!

PS: Just wanted to add that I think the Oil of Oregano has definitely helped with the tummy problem. It's definitely flatter. Not flat, but flatter. Not as poOchy, a little less sticky-outy.

This is a good thing.

Hi everybody...I'm back from the fishing and camping trip with my wife. We met up with my son and his wife and the two grand children. Not all is good as my son caught his wife with another guy and today he's gone to get his trailer out and bring it into town...This time they are done... wife and I have the children with us...quite devastating...I guess life goes on. For the newcomers, I like to say hi to mark. Now for the PP intervention program, the camping coincided with the end of it. Since then I have gone to the dogs and now I weight 214# ... I am in the process of renewing my effort and getting back into intervention. There has been too much beer drinking and too many calories taken. Now I will try to do some repair work. Take care.

Bawdy-That certainly had to make you day, getting more than you expected AND paying less!!

Bigshot-Glad to have you back. Sorry to hear about what you've been going through. You have done the right thing about climbing right back on board with Protein Power. It's always easier to fix things right after a mistake, rather than thinking there is no point and letting yourself regain all that you have worked so hard to lose. We're here for you!

Mark-It's not the shorts that have stretched; it's you who have shrunk! What kind of nuts caused the overdoing it episode? I have found that certain nuts, like peanuts and macadamia nuts, I just cannot stop eating. Others, like almonds and pistachios, I am able to exercise much more self-control.

Awww..nice of you to say..but I still have quite a bit to lose, my bmi is stil 40.. so have a WAYS to go there.. and I would like to see 175..then 135... :) So I still have 65 pounds to go! But I probably AM in a state of transition.. especially with the strength training etc with going to Curves 3-4x weekly, My body does seem to plane off for a bit, to kind of re-regulate or whatever... I just wish the rebalancing would take like. .you know..while I sleep, then back to the fat burning weight losing process during the day! :)

Hubby won $400.00 last nite on progressive keno superball slot :) Me- I lost the 40.00 I put in! Had a nice time up there tho..free hotel..stayed at the Baymont, and it was extremely comfy bed.. esp. for a hotel bed.

Bigshot-sorry about all that goings on w/ your son and all, glad you can be there to be a help tho!

Aci-we couldnt EVER forget about you! :) Have fun camping.. I am jealous.. its just to friggin hot here..

Oh..ow.. I may have to shut down here..we are getting some thunder claps.. i love storms

Bawdy.. do you listen to music when you are working out? I was listening to some radio program, and it said something about people actually losing weight more than those that exercise in silence.

:::::::::::::::: Singing :::::::::::::::::::

Well, I love a rainy night
I love a rainy night
I love to hear the thunder
Watch the lightning
When it lights up the sky
You know it makes me feel good......

Mark and Bigshot, don't sweat it. Life intervenes. Bigshot, the 4 pounds is water, not fat. You would have had to eat an impossible number of calories to have gained 4 pounds in fat. Just stick to the plan STRICTLY for a couple days and it will be gone again. Trust me.

Thought I'd share a funny story I just posted in my journal.

The other day I'm taking the dog for a walk on the road and my neighbor drives up on his ATV (the spelling of which happens to contain more letters than he has teeth). We chat for a while, and up drives another neighbor and his father in their SUV (about the same number of letters and teeth). So the first guy says, "Oh sure. I find a pretty girl, and you guys show up. Well, I found her first. She's mine." So the other guy says, "But there's two of us. We can take her away from you." So I say, "Yea, but I've been working out, and I can beat the crap out of all three of you, so you all lose!"

Three toothless old men fighting over me. All together now . . . ewwwwwww!

Mark, the Eades don't really give a calorie goal. They say to restrict the carbs and get adequate protein, which is what you're doing.

Some people swear by the "10 times your body weight in calories" rule for maintenance. Cut it to 8 or 9 times your body weight will cause you to lose weight. This does not, however, count the metabolic advantage of low-carb eating. I'm too tired right now to go into the details. I really urge you to pick up a copy of the original Protein Power book. Every bookstore carries it, and it's well worth the six or seven bucks. You don't even need the second book. Everything you need is contained in the first book.

Unity, despite what you think, you will look so much slimmer after the reduction. Other than the people I told at work, everyone else (if they said anything at all) said, "Gee, have you lost weight?"

You'll not believe how great this will be. My only advice is that whatever size you say you want to go down to, go down one more size. Trust me.
