I am currently on 1 mg of Amarly, in addition to the 2000mg of
metformin, and my endo told me that is a very small dose.
What is the usual dose of this Amaryl? I really am unhappy
taking a beta stimulator(or insulin pusher, as I term it) but
it is doing wonders with my fbg, keeping them in the range of
high 80's to 90's.

When I took it, I took 2mg. The tablets were 4mg, which I cut
in half. I was taking 500 mg of metformin at the time.

I don't know what a usual dose would be, but I started with
2mg Amaryl about three months ago and have been taking 4mg
Amaryl and 4mg Avandia for about 2 months now. So at least to
me 1mg seems like a small dose. :)
Nothing much seemed to be happening until the past two weeks
when my 1hr pp bgs suddenly went down to the 110-120s. My fbg,
though, still runs anywhere between 120 to 180.
I worry about pushing the beta cells too, and I'd like to
talk to the doctor about it at my next visit. Can someone
point me to information on alternative drug therapies or
just share your knowledge so I can talk halfway
intelligently with the doc?

The maximum daily dose of Amaryl is 4 mg. You can check out

A daily dose of 1 mg is a small dose, it is prescribed in
doses up to 8mg.
My GF takes it and also takes 2000mg of metformin. She only
takes it on days when she can't do her running exercise thing.
She was taking 2mg, but she would get frequent hypos between 3
and 5 hours, if she couldn't eat at that time. For this reason
she hates it but don't have much choice when she can't
exercise. Without it or the exercise, she can't eat hardly any
carbs at all.

Actually, the maximum recommended dose is 8mg/day.
Usual Maintenance Dose: The usual maintenance dose is 1 to 4
mg once daily. The maximum recommended dose is 8 mg once
daily. http://www.aventis-us.com/PIs/amaryl_TXT.html#Dosage%2-

No... I was only diagnosed a few months ago, so I guess my
doctor is trying these drugs out to see what happens. Have
you used it?

Yes, as I stated in my original post, I take 1000mgs twice a
day. I ws started on much less because many suffer stomach
distress when first starting this drug, so it is started in
smaller doses and ramped up to what is needed. This drug
keeps the liver from releasing glucagon, therby reducign the
need for som of the insulin ordinarily used and is supposed
to be protective of many things which I will let other
describe. It also does not cause weight gain as many other
diabetes drugs do, and may lead to a small weight loss of
about 8 pounds. I am not sure if this is a result of the
tummy distress or not. It has also been around for many
years, so is quite well tested.
