My daughter just started the sb diet and does not have access to the internet so I am asking this question for her. She is wondering if you can have diet soda of any/all kinds or is it like atkins (I am following the atkins plan) and you can only use diet rite?

http://www.mizfrogspad.com/south_beach_diet.htm here is an awesome website that might help answer questions for your daughter. :) There are a lot of things that you will both be able to enjoy together since both diets are really not all that different in the end. On the website it lists pretty much all the sweeteners as okay but it does say to limit caffine to 1 serving a day.

Here is a note on caffeine. Most diets recommend you quit caffeine because it promotes water retention. If you quit the caffeine, you will lose water weight, which also makes the diet seem more successfull. Of course, too much caffeine causes excess water retention, and is not good for you. Just a thought. :)

llabonte...I've been on SB for almost three weeks and have been having at least 1 caffeine free diet soda a day and it hasn't seemed to bother me yet. I lost 6 lbs. in Phase 1 without giving up the caffeine in my coffee or iced tea either (1-2 cups per day) although I may have lost more if I had  Think it's different for each person and their metabolism, etc. We have to make this a WOL so if having a diet soda is her way of coping then maybe she should go for it. Other than the dependence on the "sweet" taste that we are supposed to be weaning ourselves from it may be what keeps her on the plan.
Good luck and tell your daughter good luck too!
PS...Bobby fan too =-) 4th place and looking goooood!

what if you use water pills to help with the water weight is it good?

I think that diuretics for weight loss are unhealthy. If you eat enough veggies and stay away from heavy salt, you should have no problem with retained fluids.

Haven't given up totally on diet soda, although I try to drink at least 16 oz. of water per day as well. I still lose lbs.

Read the labels not all diet sodas are equal. One thing to watch for is salt, its hidden in everything. Also some diet sodas still have calories, and carbs, orange diet, rootbeer diet might have carbs, and most have salt.
