Splenda sweetened, non-caffeinated, cola has to be the best tasting product on the market. It tastes almost like regular soda without the drawbacks of caffeine. Couldn't have they come up with a better name for such a great product? Nothing like screaming to everyone in eyesight "I'm trying to lose a few!". Diet cola's have become socially acceptable over the past 10 years, as long as you are talking mainstream (ie. Coke and Pepsi products). I had to be convinced to try a Diet Rite, and then I had to convince my wife. After you taste it, you won't go back. Get past the name and enjoy! :yum:

"Diet rite" is not a new name. It's been around since 1958 and was the first diet soda. I remember my mother drinking it 40 years ago. I think its good that the company didn't turn its back on its history.

I think they should get with the times...new ingredients (ie splenda) new name. It's all about marketing.

Ya know, I gotta agree with you Cranial33. I'm not sure where through the years I'd gotten a bad vibe about Diet Rite, but it's the only diet soda I drink now and I was reticent to try it but did b/c it was all over this board. It's great! And it's almost exactly like Coke to me too! However, do you think it seems to lose it's fizz rather quickly?

Walmart and Kroger, here in the Houston area, just started carrying Diet Rite Tangerine****
It's so good. It taste like orange Sunkist to me.
At Walmart it's only $2.50 a 12 pack!

I love Diet Rite. I was afraid to try it at first, but it was on sale so I bought it. Now I'm hooked. I love the Cola and even the white grape and tangerine are yummy.

That could be, I usually drink a can with a meal so it doesn't sit out long. I have noticed, however, that the can really snap and pops when my wife leaves a can out. :)

I gotchur "all about marketing and new ingredients". Almost killed the biggest bottler of them all when they tried that stuff with "New Coke" about 15 years back. Woof! The marketing trick was in saving their ass.
Maybe they could try a new ploy: Diet Rite. We have had it Diet RIGHT all the time!
But I gotta tell you that after making 10,000PLUS commercials in my career...I promise that I have no more insight than any other person on the street. I simply know how to put the pizzazz in the TV package.

I've noticed this faster loss of carbonation with both Diet Rite and Diet Cheerwine, which is a regional soft drink found in the southeastern US that is also made with spenda. (If you ever come across Diet Cheerwine, I highly recommend it!)
Also, Diet Cheerwine with splenda has more of a tendency to "explode" when opened from a plastic bottle than do other soft drinks. (You quickly learn to always open a diet cheerwine plastic bottle slowly!) Regular (sugared) Cheerwine does not do this and the old Diet Cheerwine formula made with nutrasweet never did this.
I've never found any studies that specifically state this, but I think that gaseous carbon dioxide (CO2) is less soluble in an aqueous solution containing splenda than it is in aqueous solutions involving sugar or nutrasweet. (BTW, I have searched for studies because I am a chemist and I've been curious about this.) In other words, it appears to me that the presence of splenda decreases carbonation more readily because the carbon dioxide just does not want to stay dissolved in the liquid with splenda present. For Diet Cheerwine (especially in plastic bottles), I think that the bottlers try to get around this by pressurizing with more carbon dioxide than is normal. But if the bottle sits for a few weeks this means that more pressure has built up in the gaseous headspace and "major fizz out of liquid" upon opening.

I love Diet Rite, and the name doesn't bother me at all. I don't care if people think I am trying to lose weight. The way I see it, I would rather they think I am trying to lose weight than just letting myself stay the way I am. lol I also drank it years ago. I remember it being good then, but I think it is better now. Besides, what better name for those of us LCing than Diet Rite, since we are doing it the "rite" way. lol
Hope ya'll are having a great day!

Diet Rite Raspberry is yummy! It seems to keep it's fizz too. No sodium is a bonus too (hmm maybe the lack of sodium is what causes the cola to go flat faster, Pepsi and Coke are loaded with sodium)

I guess I'm the odd ball around here. I have never liked the taste of Diet Rite. I tired it years ago and again since starting lc'ing. I just can't get past the taste. To me it tastes funny. But then again I've never like diet soda anyway. I can deal with vanilla coke, but not the vanilla pepsi. So for me, it's easier to drink water. I guess that can be a blessing in a way. But I sure do miss soda.

I don't like the cola flavor, but try the others (if you haven't). If you like the taste of Sunkist Orange(not Diet), then you would like the tangerine Diet Rite. :yum:
I understand that the cola flavor is better than it used to be because of the Splenda.

Hey
kinda funny here in Ga. the only two no cola flavors I see are tangarene and white grape...and the tangarene is always sold out....I hope they dont invest in new adds and names till They can at least stock all flavors in all stores...P.S. if you dont mind a little aspertame Check Cola (Winn Dixie brand) makes a realy good Diet Root Beer...For all you Root Beer Lovers...It tastes sort of like the old Frostie Root Beer you use to get in Bottles....Big John

Big John,
I agree. Since i can't get over the taste of Diet Rite I'm quit happy and content with Winn Dixie brands. The Cream Soda and Root Beer are my fav's. I try to limit myself to one of the litter bottles a week.

I'm not crazy about the Diet Rite Cola but I really like the flavored versions. The best tasting cola in my opinion is the Costco Kirkland brand diet cola w/splenda. Its super fizzy and under $4 bucks for a 24ct case.

Thanks for bring this up, I didn't even think of checking Costco for diet cola. I'll have to give it a try. :) If it is better than Diet Rite I'll be all over it. I like the Diet Rite better than the major brands, but I'm always willing to try something new.

I live in Virginia and we have cola, tangerine, grape, raspberry and strawberry-kiwi. I can never find peach or black-cherry. I think "Waist Watchers" (sweetened with Splenda) is really good too. They make a ginger ale and root beer. Somewhere in the world, "Waist Watchers" make a cherry-cola and chocolate flavors. I have no idea where?

Well I guess I won't be trying the Costco brand after all. When I started my diet I ruled out Caffeine too. I do have it on rare occasions when my wife and I go to resturants, but as a rule I stay away. Oh well. I like the Diet Rite cola well enough, and my wife doesn't mind sneaking it into the movie theatres for me
Still wish they would change the name to something more trendy.

I'd seen the bottles for a while, but never even considered them because I just assumed that if the powder had aspartame then the bottles would too. So I was shocked to learn that bottles were made with Splenda. They always seem too expensive though.

I'm crazy about Diet Rite too. I can only find the cola, raspberry, and white grape flavors though. I'll have to check out Costco!

They're having a promotion where you can win a years worth of dietrite - go to www.dietrite.com and check it out.

If they don't, they should. What better way to get in touch with your consumers? They are going to get big rather quickly if the major brands don't get with it. Hopefully they will use their new found success to build a strong presence in the market place. Of course selling their product at $2.50 per 12 pack at WalMart makes me happy. Hope that doesn't change any time soon.

Thanks for the information on the promotion. Winning Diet Rite for a year would be pretty cool. I wonder if they would ship it to you then. Perhaps then I could try the white grape flavor (which I have yet to find in stores).

Cranial - I bet they give you something like 52 coupons each for a free 12-pack that you take to the store. Much easier that way than shipping pop.

I have a downstairs refrigerator full of Diet Coke, Sprite, etc. I'll save it for guests and/or barbeques! Glad to have found out about Diet Rite. I especially love Red Raspberry and White Grape. Does anyone get a lot of cramping - like legs, or feet, due to loss of potassium? Since I'm on Atkins, I have had severe feet and leg cramps. Got myself some Potassium suppleements. Carole

Sun, Aug-15-04, 01:25
Neither my wife or I have had any cramping during our weight loss. I take a multi-vitamin daily, maybe that makes up for what I might have lost in nutrients. I'll admit I'm no health nut and know little about the benefits and drawbacks of too little or too much of a certain nutrient.
By the way, found the white grape flavor and tried it. It's not bad, but I think I'll stick with the raspberry and cola flavors.

Am I the only one who thinks diet rite is incredibly sweet? Don't get me wrong, I do like it, I just find that I have to cut it with plain seltzer water or it's too sweet for me to drink. The only flavor I really like is the raspberry. I've had the cola white grape and orange but the raspberry is my favorite. We have a new soda brand here called Waist Watchers and it's made with splenda. They have rootbeer, too. I haven't tried it yet, nor have I checked the ingredients for caffiene, but I'm not too picky about caffiene so I may just buy a bottle to see how it tastes.

I agree, it is sweet. But that's what I like about it. For those who enjoy the taste of the major diet sodas, they can stick it out with Aspartame. I'll take my sweet Diet Rite cola over them all. And no caffeine! What a great cola!

 Hi folks. I'm new to this forum but an experienced low carber. I got side tracked and off track but I'm back on. Anyway...
Diet Rite Tangerine and black cherry are favorites of mine. I've been drinking them forever. Served VERY cold and with a shot of heavy cream they become floats. I also do this with diet root beer and Canfields diet chocolate fudge soda. I prefer to whip the cream first for more body and a creamier texture but just poured in is good too.
BTW, I jsut read that Coke is coming out with a Splenda version soon.

I like Diet Rite the best because it's made with Splenda. Splenda doesn't taste as much like chemicals as the others and I feel it's healthier too. As far as root beer, I LOVE Diet A&W Rootbeer. Doesn't taste diet to me at all anymore. With some low carb ice cream... yummy!

A year ago I would have been all over Coke if it was made with Splenda. But now I'm so happy with Diet Rite I'll stay with them no matter how the Coke tastes. I was a BIG coke drinker prior to Atkins. Now I'm disgusted with their lack of vision with regards to low-carbers.

I love Diet Rite. I don't like how fast it goes flat. I leave it out on the counter, because I find it stays fizzy longer that way. I can't even seem to get 3 days out of an opened bottle in the fridge.

WAIST WATCHERS - AND THEY HAVE ROOTBEER AND GINGER ALE, which Diet Rite doesn't have. :-)

Someone in another thread posted a message about Pepsi One and Diet Sprite using Splenda now. Pepsi One is mentioned on Pepsi's website, whereas Diet Sprite is not. I hear Coke is going to use Splenda in Diet Coke, also. We'll see. When I e-mailed them about Aspartame's Disease, last year, they said to me, "we have no intentions of changing our formula... Our tests prove that Aspartame is completely safe..." I guess they realized they were wrong, and luckily for us, word got out about the side effects from aspartame.
Toxicity Effects of Aspartame Use
Selection of adverse effects from short-term and/or long-Term use
Note: It often takes at least sixty days without *any* aspartame or nutrasweet to see a significant improvement. Improvement in health is also often accompanied by weight loss. Check all labels very carefully (including vitamins and pharmaceuticals). Look for the word "aspartame" on the label and avoid it. (Also, it is a good idea to avoid "acesulfame-k" or "sunette.") Finally, avoid getting nutrition information from junk food industry PR organizations such as IFIC or organizations that accept large sums of money from the junk and chemical food industry such as the American Dietetic Association.

This is something I figured you might find interesting... Diet Rite is the diet version of RC Cola. RC Cola is the cola for the "southern palate." I watch food network, regularly, and they had a segment on RC Cola. RC Cola (diet rite) is sweeter than other cola and has less fizz than other cola, because the southern palate prefers it that way.
