Looking Into The Atkins Diet

Chances are you or someone you know is on the Atkins diet, but does it work or is it just a quick fix to lose weight?

The Atkins diet seems to be pulling its own weight when it comes to shedding pounds at a fast pace. Just ask Don Richardson. Since being on the low carb diet, he's lost 30 pounds, dropping 10 in just one week.

"I was real serious, the induction period where you pretty much eliminate carbs, and the weight came off real fast," Richardson said.

He does this just by eating a lot of the foods he loves to eat.

"Which just amazed me cause it's all the things I was told to avoid, and now I eat it in massive quantity and love it! All the things you can't have bacon and eggs," Richardson said.

"We have to step back and say, 'Does this make sense? Can I eat bacon and eggs and butter every day, all day?'" Registered dietician Amanda Segar said.

"And sausage and hamburgers, cheeseburgers," Richardson said.

"And be healthy in the long run?" Segar said.

Segar says that the Atkins diet is downright deceiving.

"You do see a quicker weight loss, due to the Atkins diet. However, it's typically due to water loss that results from a low carbohydrate intake," Segar said.

Segar says that your best bet to keep healthy and keep the weight off is to exercise and have a balanced diet, one that includes a healthy intake of carbs, but Richardson is running in the opposite direction. He says he's perfectly happy on the Atkins diet.

"I've been heavy all my life, overweight all my life, and this has been the most successful diet I've ever tried," Richardson said.

I love it when the experts discount a LC lifestyle by saying "it's mostly water loss" It would be hard to convince me I lost almost 90lbs of water.
