It's raining on the World Pork Expo in Des Moines this week, but producers are upbeat. "This is a good time for the industry," says Indiana producer Keith Berry, president of the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC). "Prices are up and we hope the profitable levels continue." Pork demand in the U.S. is good, he says, and exports are up. Higher hog prices will mean a slowing of producers exiting the pork industry, says Berry. "There is still a place for smaller family farmers. I have 120 sows and we're making money."
Lower carbohydrate diets, including Atkins and South Beach, have given American consumers "permission to eat meat again," says Neil Dierks, CEO of the NPPC. Meat eaters no longer have to feel guilty eating a pork chop in a restaurant, says Dierks, and that has helped demand.
