 Hello Fellow Ottawa Person!!!

I fell off the wagon  However, I think all I need is a little push...and encouragement, and to find my motivation again... LOL

I would love to become your "Low Carb Diet Buddy" if you'd like! I grew up here in Ottawa/Hull. Was actually looking to meet people who can relate...

Great to hear from you again. Any time is the perfect time for a new beginning ... and hopping right back on that wagon.

I know there's a few others here too in the Ottawa area .. Moneca where are you????

p.s. - I edited your email address to prevent spamming. Folks can send you a private message if they wish ... but better yet to share your experiences with everybody on the forum, so we all can benefit and learn .. and offer support :) ... Jos, it might be good for you to consider starting a journal ... in the My Journal/Bootcamp section. A lot of people find it really, really helpful ... keeps us focused, and you'll get great encouragement and suggestions from everybody. It's a real group-effort!!

Hi guys - well I'm kind of in the BROADER Ottawa area

Do you consider south of Smiths Falls to be "in the area"? It's kind of 'no-man's land' LOL.

Anyway I'm 1/2 way between Smiths Falls and Kingston along the Rideau. I live in the country and can only see my neighbours when the leaves are gone from the trees.

This is the first board I've found that has so many Canadians! I'm really thinking this is very cool. :D

It is very cool. This board was started by Canadians, and I agree, it's nice to have our canuck bent on things ;)

Where about are you re township? I just got back from spending the day down in Prescott. It's a trip we make every few weeks, and it certainly is beautiful. I also head down to Greenbush regularly to vist my aunt and uncle.

Great to meet another valley person!

Hi Nat and LC Sponge. Although not in Ottawa, I love that area. My daughter went to Carleton for one year and we have been down to see the Senators play several times. Wonderful city and area.

Hope all the Canucks have a great lowcarb Thanksgiving and that we all enjoy and are thankful for our wonderful country. God bless Canada and the U.S.

Take care all.

As a bit of history, lowcarb.ca was started in Vancouver. I too love all the Canadians here and wish there were more.

Spongey - I'm near Kingston ... and lazy drives up into the valley, along the Rideau Canal system and lakes are a fave pasttime of mine. My sister lives in Smiths Falls.

Yes, quite a few members from Canada ... BC, esp. the southwest, and southern Ontario are well-represented ... but only a spattering of members from other regions. Ah well, we're growing daily :D

Well it sure is a small world. I am so used to chatting with mostly US folks on LC that this is a real eye-opener. Most canucks I've *run* into before are either from the TO region or BC.

Doreen - I work in Kingston, and it's about a 40 min drive each way along highway15 - but a lovely drive especially this time of year with the leaves changing. Often for a change of pace we go to Smiths Falls for groceries :) as it's the same distance. Gananoque is also a good place to shop but only after the tourists leave.

Nat - I'm in Leeds Grenville County, Rideau Lakes Township. Never thought of myself as a valley person, but I guess I am of sorts. Where is Greenbush?

Karen - My dh will be delighted to learn about the *Vancouver* connection - he spent infancy to 16 yrs in Victoria, before joining the army. He still thinks BC has it all over Ontario for being on the cutting edge :)

I think this part of Ontario has it all - close enough for day trips to Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto - all the maple syrup we can't eat and some of the most beautiful scenery around. I just did the 10k hike at Charleston Lake - the leaves are gorgeous.

If I'm not mistaken Greenbush is at the end of highway 15, or there abouts. County is Addison (?) or is that township? Very close to Brockville and just south of Merrickville.

Another Ottawan amongst the bunch...Kanata more specifically but I guess that is Ottawa now isn't it?

This forum is amazing -- can't believe how many people from the area are on board. There is a whole lo carb world out there that so many don't know about.

Nope, it's litterally the 1-800 O-Canada site where you call for general Government enquiries.

Anything Government, we know it, or know to guide you in the right direction.

Oh great a forum for Ottawa Low Carbers !
I originally posted this in the introduce yourself forum so I've reposted my intro.

Hi all, been lurking for a while, just completed 3 months at the Bernstein clinic with 41 pounds lost, now I want to do low carb...
i am convinced that is what causes me to gain weight.
I'm on a mad hunt to find ingredients so I've been scouring Ottawa...
If anyone else lives here and wants to share where to find stuff let me know...it sure has become like the thrill of the hunt...but way healthier than the beanie baby craze i went thru...hee hee
I found a neat organic store (Rainbow foods) and it was like a mecca....had all the thickening gums..flours etc..
Couldnt' wait to place my order for tortillas and davinci syrup so I called Judi (island girl) and had a wonderfull long chat...sharing her 4 years of tips and hints for a newbie low carber...can't wait to get my tortillas, davinci syrup and keto muffin mix..I want to be able to get my low carb procucts in Canada whenever possible...it just feels right...proud Canadian, what can I say.
I'm going to make Island Girls flax muffins today.
I found a butter called rice butter soy free...
says...1 tbsp 40 cals, 3 gm fat, 2 gm carbs
has anyone used this for cooking ?
I'm reading lots of your threads and saving all the goodie tips..
thanks so much for sharing ..i'm sooo happy i found this board
I am on a mission to make low carb my way of life, i've been saving recipes like a mad woman too...hee hee
Bought whey protein shake mix vanilla...eeeww too runny, it wasn't the gourmet...don't know if i can find it in Ottawa tho...so going to thicken it with guar gum.
I've made the infamous mock danish ..nummmy eh.
and cheese crisp....(melting cheese in frying pan and then flipping it over) from the TLC site...i really want to order her cookbook, anybody have any reviews on it ?
I also collect and save any tips that help me with motivation and sticking with this way of life and any urls to go to...i'm so buzy in here reading and absorbing I'm away from thinking about snacking...no more unconscious grazing for me...I'm controlling the food ..not letting it control me...just have to brainwash myself that...somedays are soo eazy and other days the food demons haunt me ...I get asked alot if I'm ever hungry...I do say that it has it's moments...but nothing tastes as good as slim feels

 Welcome Waydown!

It's nice to have fellow Ottawan (is that right?) here. Well, I'm not an official Ottawan since I live in Aylmer but close enough!

It's great of you to mention actual places to buy some specialty items. Where exactly is Rainbow Foods? Downtown?

There are so many great suggestions on this board...enjoy and keep us posted on any new ones you may have! Plus, please fill us in on any new great stores!

Good luck!!!!!!

Thanks for the info Waydown. That's a crazy part of town for directions to a store. Is it actually ON Richmond? There's another neat store in the Carlingwood Mall. If you enter on the Woodruffe Avenue side where Pizza Pizza is, it is the first store on the left. All kinds of great bulk stuff and flours if you are in the west end! ENJOY!

WELCOME TO LAURA! Great to have a another person from the Quebec side of the river!

FYI, all bulk barns in the Ottawa area carry almond flour (ground almonds) at a very good price. The best place to find macadamia nuts is Costco/Price Club.

Hello Laura and welcome to this board. (We actually met when I was in Ottawa to work one summer, as we had become acquainted on another LC board.) It's wonderful to see you here too - I am sure you'll enjoy it and can contribute a lot. You are doing well with maintaining the big loss you had. And I can testify that you looked GREAT when I met you in Ottawa. (Nice husband, too.)

Bonnie, thanks for the F'ton welcome, how are things down home? Hubby and I have to go to Shediac for a wedding end of July and will be getting a chance to stop at home and see the family.

Another Ottawa folk checking in. Been in Ottawa for 6 years now, and lived in PEI before that.

I've been looking for good LC products here in Ottawa and have had little luck.. Anyone know where to pick up Atkins suppliments in town?

Also there is a little suppliment shop in the Merivale Mall that has a nice selection of Low-carb bars.. No Atkins, but some tasty ones. Try the Raspberry Swirl one! It kinda tastes like a jujube. There is also a very nice chocolate coconut bar there that was too good! Normally I can restrain myself and only eat half a bar as a treat, but the coconut one was so good I ate it all! I think they also said if you buy a case (mix'n'match) you get 25% off.

Cheers!

Hey,

I'm near Ottawa, in Outaouais Québec side :-)

Anyone know where I can get PORK RINDS ?

ehehehhe

Ottawa
Tue, Aug-07-07, 14:05
This is a few months late but I get the Pork Rinds at Bulk Food Warehouse. There are several throughout Ottawa (South Keys, Blair and Ogilvie and so on). Almost anywhere there is a large Loblaws you will find one.

A few other items that they have include Sugar free chocolate wafers and Golden Flaxseed. The Pork Rinds work well in some crusts and you can save 15-20% by buying a case. They also have soy crisps that are a nice treat and loaded with protein as well.

I am from Ottawa as well, following Protein Power for just over 4 years.

Sounds Great!

From the last time (few years back) it might be best if we pick a location and a night, then start the thread. With office things, family committments, etc., it would be better to have it earlier than later. Thursday, Friday or Saturday works for me.

Hello everyone in Gatineau/Ottawa area. I am new to this forum and I have a question on the SCD. I started the Specific Carbohydrate Diet 3 weeks ago for my IBS but I have great difficulty in finding Dry Cottage Curds (AKA DCCC) in this area. Would anyone know where it is available? Thanks for your reply in advance.

I have never seen them for sale but a Polish friend has them pressed like mini flatbreads with a topping on them. The are a little crubly but are definitely dried, pressed cottage cheese.

Try a specialty store that caters to Polish foods like the Warsaw Polish Deli on Richmond Road or Continental Delicatessen, 57 York Street, 613-241-7025, or the nearby Sausage Kitchen.
