Hi All,
I've recently ordered the Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil and am wondering how you are taking it....I've seen a lot of posts about taking a tablespoon a day, however, are you literally scooping up a tablespoon and eating it?
Are you melting it?
Or are you simply using a tablespoon to cook your food, then eating it?
I do have to say - that it's wonderful for the skin! The last week I've been smearing it on my hands and face - been doing wonders for my skin!

Hello,
Like you, I read all the benefits of Coconut Oil and ordered some. HOWEVER, when I recieved the oil, the jar said "excellent for hair and skin" and I could not find any directions for eating the oil. I called the company, SPECTRUM ESSENTIALS, and they told me that the coconut oil I had bought was not meant to be eaten. I was not too happy but they said I could mail it back. Well, when I took the package to the post office, it cost half as much to mail it back as I had paid for it so I kept it.
We were going to the beach so I took a jar....OH MY GOSH, it is the best AFTER SUN TREATMENT I have ever used. Although it goes on like baby oil (I just dig in and it melts in my hands), it is quickly absorbed and my skin has never looked more nourished....even after 2 weeks at the beach.
Even though what I got was not to eat I am so glad that I got it for my skin. Maybe some of you folks can tell us the best brands to buy and what the best way to take it is. I know that some people just take it by the tablespoon, but there are also recipes on the recipe site for using it in desserts.
HOPE THIS HELPS.

Hi there,
Thanks so much for the answers....I started this morning by taking a tablespoon - then I smeared some on my face tonight...LOL....talk about multi-uses....
I accidentally bought the spectrums brand at first as well - then I realized it wasn't the right kind...
I bought the ones from tropical traditions - which is recommended...I have to say the stuff is great...I like cooking my food in it, and I'm hoping it works as well to simply take it by the tablespoon - I know what you mean by the water afterwards!
I think I'll keep track to see if I notice any changes at all....

I find eating VCO difficult too .... but it definitely has a good effect on my basal body temp, so I am looking to find good recipes for it.
One that looks good is Almond Bark which is here:
http://tinyurl.com/2g8d4
I've tried it and you really can't taste the coconut oil. Also, as it uses sweetener its a kind of chocolate without sugar! By trial and error I found my own favourite combination of sweetener and cocoa, but I used more of each than are in this recipe.
I also find that if I fry onions in VCO and then some diced pork or beef with gravy stock, it just makes the whole thing taste slightly sweeter and it doesn't taste coconutty at all.
Oh and *Jacque*, I've been using it on my face for 2-3 months and the results are amazing - particularly the fine lines around my eyes. I've also used it as underarm deodorant! Yes - it really works! Plus, if I have a spot coming up on my face (like at ToM), the VCO seems to prevent it from happening at all. Great! :D
Btw, has anybody else found it helps with borderline hypothyroid symptoms? If so, over how long a period of time?

HI Katy,
I tried the link, but it comes up as blank....
I'm having a hard time swallowing an entire tablespoon of the VCO...This morning I tried it with a little sugar-free White Chocolate syrup (zero carbs) and mixed it up as a liquid....I noticed that the VCO seems to pick up the flavor of what it's in...So that helped....drinking it seems easier than eating it as if it's a spoon of grease...LOL
I LOVE what it's doing for my face....I've noticed it around my wrinkles (oops, fine lines...)....Deodorant? hmmm, never heard of that one......You just smearing it on - does it dry without getting on your clothes? I'll have to try it on those spots during TOM....interesting..can't wait to try it..
Thanks for posting...

I have been using the coconut oil for 4 weeks now. It is important to get the cold pressed unrefined oil if you are eating or cooking with it. The other can go rancid quickly and does not taste good.
I coat the pan with it when I cook meats. Use it for frying.
I now put it in shakes, (if not solidify just run bottle under hot tap for a few seconds) stews, curries, soups, stir-fry, cereal, scrambled eggs and omelettes. What ever I can it goes into.
The stew, curries soup when I serve it up I put a spoonful in my serving. If I have not had any in the day I will go to the jar and spoon out a spoonful and eat right off the spoon. It is not fatty or greasy in your mouth like a lot of oils are.
I have noticed my skin is not scaly and dry like it used to be and my hair is shinny. My temp. has come from 35.5 to 35.6 and I am not as tired or wanting to drop off about 2.00 in the afternoon.
I have started losing weight again slowly but losing.
I think it is a fantastic product.
At the same time I started taking the coconut oil I started taking Mace so it could account for more energy as well.

Hi
Jacque - I think you might have to be logged into Yahoo to get the link, so with apologies for the length of post - here is the recipe:
CHOCOLATE ALMOND BARK
By Marie Sooklaris
This is a sugar-free recipe that uses stevia powder as a sweetener. If you
use any other type of sweetener, you will have to experiment with amounts of
sweetener. Being that I'm low-carb and a natural girl, I won't use anything
but stevia to sweeten. I'm still suspicious of sucralose (Splenda), I don't
trust aspartame, and simply cannot do sugar of any kind. That's just me.
4 T. (1/4 Cup) Coconut Oil
3 T. alkalized Cocoa Powder (your favorite -- I like Valrhona)
(I’m sure it would be alright to melt some of the dark chocolate in place of
the cocoa powder – Kristine)
2 oz. (by weight) almonds
1/4 t. stevia rebaudiana powder
Place small pan or steel bowl with coconut oil on very low burner just
enough
to melt coconut butter but not for the purposes of heating it. In fact,
remove from heat before all coconut butter melts. The ambient heat will
finish the job. Stir to melt down the white gobs.
Add in cocoa powder and stevia and using rubber spatula, stir to combine and
blend well. Taste chocolate mixture and adjust seasonings if needed. You
might want to add more stevia, but add it in 1/8 or 1/16 teaspoon
increments.
Chop or grind almonds (or other nut or combination of nuts and seeds, for
that matter) to desired chunkiness or fineness (I used food processor for
fine grind), then toast by placing in non-stick skillet on medium heat and
stirring occasionally with spatula until they just warm or turn a little
golden (to your preference).
Blend nuts (and/or nut/seed combo) into chocolate mixture.
Have chilled a metal bakeware lasagna or cake pan or pans in freezer for ten
minutes or so. Remove from freezer and line with plastic wrap. You may
need to moisten side walls of pan with a finger's dab of water so plastic wrap
sticks to it. Then pour chocolate/nut mixture into chilled pan and spread
to desired thickness. Some like it thin and crackly. Some like it a little
thicker. Try the thinner version first because I know that is popular.
Pop it in refrigerator or freezer on level shelf and let it sit 10 minutes
or so. It will harden quickly and breaks with a snap and is so much fun to
eat. (It melts in your hand -- ! ! ! -- so you may want to handle it with
plastic wrap. Or what I do is break it into bite size pieces and keep it in a
container lined with plastic wrap in the fridge or freezer, that is if it
lasts that long!)
Aside from almonds, I have used and like a combination of equal amounts of
shredded coconut, macadamia nuts and almonds. Or toasted sesame seeds. Or add some flax meal as well (don't toast so you preserve the EFAs). Pecans,
walnuts, whatever you like.
Experiment with how fine or coarse you like your nut mixture.
This whole proposition can be accomplished in less than 20 minutes. From
"Hershey's Bar with Almonds or See's Candies Almond Bark fantasy" to healthy
coconut oil and stevia sweetener alternative, just as quick as running down
to the corner store for a candy bar, only much better for you.
Enjoy... ; )
Delia -
I have tried to eat it off the spoon but it is just nauseating like that for me (and as I've been eating low carb/70% fat for three years I am no stranger to a high fat diet!) I think some people just find it that way, unfortunately. I wish I could eat it like that! I can't bear scrambled eggs with it either. I think maybe I overdosed on it too soon cos when I started I went straight to 3.5 tbs per day
So were you in a stall due to thyroid problems before you started on the VCO? And how much are you taking per day? It's so expensive that I try to limit it to my own consumption and not the family's, so I don't include it in many meals (only lunch sometimes when I am at home), so your idea of adding your own tbs to your own portion is a great idea :) .

HI Katy
I have been low carbing for a just over a year now.
I lose very slowly and have lost 9k this last year. Yes I feel it is due to the thyroid problems. Now I am taking the VCO and maca root I have starting losing each week for the past 4 weeks .2,.7, .2, .2. While it is only a little a week that is 1.3 in the month so I am very happy.
I take 1 to 1 tablespoons of oil a day and a teaspoon of maca.
I try to keep to 20 to 25 carbs a day.
I must try you recipe it sounds great.
Cheers Delia

Katy I just tired the chocolate recipe. It is fantastic of course I ate the lot.
Next time I will cut it into four pieces and wrap and freeze them.
I put it in a tray in the fridge and slanted it slightly so I got some thin and some thick. I don't know which I like the best.
No damage done at 6.3 carbs for the lot and got my oil in.
Thanks you so much
Cheers from Australia

Today I was having a having a hard time getting it down with regular water. So I just took a table spoon and scraped it off fast with my teeth and quickly started drinking green tea and swallowed it with the tea lol. I think the tea helped melt it and get it down faster. No aftertaste! If you keep your tongue away from it and use your teeth you don't taste it :D
My dog was going crazy over the smell of it. So I let him lick it off the spoon and he loved it. I thought it was so disgusting. How the hell can he eat it like that.:Puke:

Delia - I'm glad you liked the recipe! I prefer my chocolate darker so I think I added quite a bit more cocoa. How's this for an idea? I was thinking next time I make it I would freeze it in ice cube trays to make little chocolates with my recommended dose therein! Cool, huh?
Btw, perhaps you should start a journal so we can keep up re the thyroid/VCO issue - come and visit mine anytime! :)

I don't know if this way of eating the coconut oil is really a low carb but it helps me get it down.
I use 3 Wasa brand Fiber Rye crispbreads (5g net carbs each) and put a tsp of oil on each one. Then I put a light layer of regular cream cheese on the crackers. You don't even taste the oil.
I'll add the oil to hot vegetables that I eat.
