Hi everyone! I've been lurking for some time now. I started Atkins May 14, 2004. I've lost 8 lbs so far & I feel so much better. I am still counting carbs as if on induction since I have ~100 lbs to lose. However I have a question.
I receive the Atkins Nutritional Inc. magazine. It has the 4 phases of Atkin's listed as color coded squares with various foods etc. that are appropriate for each phase.
It is my understanding from reading the book(s) that bread & other items are strickly forbidden during induction. But the magazine indicates/codes the Quick & Easy bread mix, Hot cereal, Ready to eat bread and other items as acceptable during induction.
This is a little confusing to me. Can someone explain?
Thank you,
Joyce

There is alot of controvery on this subject and I'm with you on being totally confused!
Alot of people are very into the *orginal* Atkins diet with the allowable foods and NOTHING else! yet some people are ok with this newer version.....
Personally, I've tried the old way, and just find it too hard.....
I eat an advantage bar once in awhile and have a sugar free chocolate bar too.....I also just made some homemade protein bars today that are great!
I've lost 8lbs in three weeks, but am loosing inches quicker!

Yes, It is confusing that Atkins would sell things that go against it's own plan (but, there are in the business to make money). However, since everyone is different, there is something for everyone. I think that sticking to a Strict (aka clean) Induction helps to insure that you rid yourself of the carb cravings and gets you burning in ketosis. For that reason alone, I'd leave out LC bread until you finish your Induction Phase. Then after you know that you are in ketosis, you might try adding one thing at a time to test your sensitivity to LC products. Some people go crazy with the Frankenfoods, eating several pieces instead of one or two, and then throw themselves out of ketosis and have to start over. That's painful and avoidable.
I think most agree that keeping it simple is the best way to go.
Hope this helps,
tofi

I have to agree with Danakins.
The LC products & substitutes are produced and marketed by a company who bought the Atkins names and products from Dr. Atkins' wife after his death in 2003.
My feeling is that they are more interested in selling their products than in keeping Dr. Atkins' ideas as he wrote about them in the books.
Induction is only two weeks. Isn't it worthwhile to go along with the diet as written in the books for just 2 weeks if that's going to get you the best losses and help you get rid of carb cravings?
And if you later start using those products, watch carefully to see if they increase the carb cravings or stall your losing. For some people, they do.
Low carb eating can help many people heal their disordered insulin insensitivity but not until they have eaten LC for many months.

Thank you'll for all of your input I really appreciate it. :) This board is great.
I have done induction by the book and have read everyone's posts regarding the other frankenfoods, so I stayed away even though the magazine indicated they were okay. I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss something.
I will try to make some time to get to the Introduction section later so that you'll will know a little more about me.
Thanks again! :daizy:

hello, First I would advise that you stay on induction for a little longer before moving on. I dont mean to never move to phase two but those like myself looking to lose more than 50lbs. need induction for more than just two weeks. I read in the atkins book that you can safely stay on induction for up to 6 months or more before moving on. I personally have done the induction for two weeks and have found that I lost weight only to regain the majority of it back when i moved on. I dont think my body had totally adjusted. Second. I agree that the new owners of the Atkins Approach are in it to make money. If I were you I wouldnt eat the bread until at least after I have been on induction for at least 4 weeks or so. If Dr. Atkins were still alive I dont think he would agree with eating any bread whatsoever on the induction phase. In the older version of the book, those types of things are strictly forbidden and for me thats the version that works best. HERE IS HOW I DEAL WITH CARB CRAVINGDS DURING INDUCTION. I am a die hard bread fan and I love it. But I feel as though I have the rest of my life to eat a lil bread her and there. But I need to lose this weight now and I mean RIGHT NOW and Im not going to let a lil piece of bread stand in the way.

I think Dr Atkins is rolling over in his grave, and the Mrs. Atkins is laughing all the way to the bank. I think all of this LC marketing is "crap"
Anyone who is LCing needs to be highly educated and well informed to protect themselves from the LC "marketeers"
I borrow a statement from Body builders "You cannot trust anything you read in a body building magazine", because the magazine has interests in the supplement they are selling.
I think the same applies for the "low carb" magazines.
"Buyer beware"
