Was it a Big old Italian sub from little Italy...Nope...Was it Baskin Robbins...Nope..How about Dunkin Doughnuts...not even...It was a dang old Onion...Vidallia Onions to be exact...If your not from the South and have never heard or had them, they are the sweetest...best tasting...grown in only one small area in Ga. Onions in the World....so sweet you can eat them by themselves...And I love them....One of the best things there is is a Vidallia onion and Homegrown Tomatoe sandwich with Mayo...No I didnt do the sandwich...Started out good cooked some Deer Tenderloins wraped in bacon on the grill...Fried some Raddishes with some onions in them...still not bad...Than the Boogieman took over...started eating slices with mayo...mmmmm...what the heck...cut one big one up and slowly fried in butter..to smother them loins in onions...oh heck why not take some water ..egg and atkins bake mixand make some onion rings too...Well there you go...I had an ONION Orgy...lol.....and feel like Crap today up 3lbs...just goes to show you you never know what will get you in trouble...Thought it would have been strawberry shortcake or Ci Ci's Buffet but nope a dang old onion....I might have lost a battle but the wars still on and I aint gonna lose this one.....Back to strict induction today and for awhile with no more breakdowns hopefully or at least till home grown tomatoes start showing up....lol....Big John

Don't beat yourself up! if you had to fall off the wagon an onion (a veggie with lots of good stuff in it) is probably one of the best things you could have chosen. Do you know how many carbs there are in a vidallia? Is there a way you can work them into your diet? I.e. jarred or dried that you can use from time to time.

The gain could be from anything - not necessarily the onion. Did you eat salty food? Did you eat a bigger volume of food? Have you been working out?

You have done SO well so far and, personally, I wouldn't even consider this a cheat - just a higher than induction level carb day.

P.S. according to fitday a large onion has 10 net carbs. Even considering that Vidallias are sweeter then the average onion, you didn't do damage. I doubt it even knocked you out of ketosis.

LMAO! You are Killing me! LOL!

Don't be so hard on your self John! That was a minor slip was all. You are back on track today, and that's what matters most! Seems a little strange, a veggie as harmless as an onion could mess you up so badly! Sorry for you. You've done so well so far, I know you will beat this onion thing!

Happy LCing!

(Please start a journal, I'd love to visit you there)

LOL you crack me up!!
I have never had them, but they must be awesome! I really love home grown tomatoes too, so I can understand your feelings there.
Hey, it could have been a lot worse. You binged on a veggie :D

OMG - a bloomin' onion. :yum: Oh John I would have been there with you eatin' them up. At least it was an onion and not a whole cheesecake. . . :D Don't be so hard on yourself.

And, the uppage in pounds could be sodium and not the onion, therefore drink water until you drown in it. I posted in my journal that I splurged on 8 wheat thins and some spinach dip and was up 3 pounds this a.m. I am waterlogging myself. :p

You are doing good so keep it up!!

Been there, done that.... if I could slice a whole huge onion, toss in some garlic, some mushrooms, saute in butter, and eat it with a burger, well that is my idea of heaven... but, I just limit myself to only 1/2 and figure that is a great way to spend my carbs! But, I have to agree with the rest, you could have done much worse than to eat onions!

I think a large onion is about 13 carbs...not sure about Vidalias though. This is not too bad at all. Just get back on track the next time you eat...

I have to agree with the sentiments here. At least it was an onion and not 4 or 5 candy bars.

I had a similiar experience in the past. Sweet potatoes are what get to me. Not candied sweet potatoes but plain baked sweet potatoes smothered in butter or sweet potato slices deepfried in my deep fryer.

I am crazy for onions myself but now I limit myself to a few thin slices
in my salads or a little bit finely diced in my egg and tuna salads.

Don't beat yourself up about it. You are doing fantastic so far. Just think of this as an *oops* and move forward with a smile. :)

ohh vidalia onions, wish I lived closer to where they are grown, not...give me onions and tomatoes and I'm in heaven...grew up with toasted rye bread, tomatoes with salt, sugar, and pepper, topped with onions...brings back very fond memories.

Listen to what is posted, take heart, and thanks so much for sharing I needed the laugh and the vicarious food high.

Take care and keep at it,
Debra

Ok John... how many darn onions did you have :D LOL! Just kidding!

This could have been much much worse.... At lease you found out you don't have much control over them and next time you'll be prepare :) Plus I'm betting it's water weight and will come of quick and you'll be feeling back in the groove in no time!

Thanks for sharing.... now I think I need to find one of those onions to see what they're like! My fave salad in summer is red onion, cucumber and tomatoe slices with red vinegar. Summer veggies rock!

Oh my gosh..I used to live in Atlanta and you made my mouth water..we get them here in Ohio ( imported from Georgia..but they are not usually in good shape by the time you get them from the store) I think the gain is water and nothing else.. and you'll just be right down to your original loss in a day or so..you gave me a big smile..keep up the good work and reward yourself with a bit of onion every now and then..they make everything better in my book!!!

Those onions are awesome!! But, I agree with everyone...it as certainly the lesser of evils. Trust me, if something messed me up, it would be A LOT more than an onion =). I think you are still doing awesome!!

John, A hint I learned from my mother in law about how to store those Vidalias for future use (don't want those babies to spoil!): Wrap each onion individually in newspaper and store in the bottom drawer of your fridge. They will keep for months. That way you can splurge later in the year! Oh, and yes, I have a drawer full of them! :D

Those kind of onions are wonderful! *drools*

Having had no sleep... the warped voice in my head is saying "OK, you fell off the onion wagon. At least you didn't fall off the turnip truck!" :D

I live in Florida and those vidalias practically grow on the side of the road. We have them all year here! Just think of the amazing progress you are making when you worry about eating too many veggies! I agree with the other folks. That three pounds is probably just water weight and natural fluctuation. You could have binged on something MUCH worse, I sure know about that :). Onions are good for you too, they have a lot more vitamins than Baskin Robbins hehehe.

John, some of these poor northerners have missed the point when you said VIDALIA onions. They know not what we speak. You know us poor southern boys may speak funny and not know a taxi from a turtle...but damned if we don't know a good onion!

For those who are not yet blessed with a true VIDALIA: A VIDALIA onion is to onions what Frederick's of Hollywood is to boxer shorts.

Vidalias! Oh, yum!

As further evidence of how good those onions are, the church I attended as a child sold five and ten pound bags of these sweeties every year for fundraising! We made three times more money off those onions than ANY candy or cookie sale. :D

I must get some today!
