My doctor recently told me that I am insulin resistant and told me to try a low carb diet. I've been having problems getting into the swing of things so I bought the Inuslin Resistance diet. Has anyone else tried this and if so, do you have any tips for me??

I don't know anything about The Insulin Resistance Diet but, if I were you, I would go straight to Dr. Bernstein's book: "Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution" by Richard K. Bernstein. You can read quite a bit of the book on his website: www.diabetes-book.com.

I didn't follow this diet but read almost all of the low carb books. AFAIK, it's a lower carb and low fat as well, not as strict as Atkins or similar. some ppl who been eating regular amount of carbs can get a good jump start with simply cutting all simple sugar and starches in any form from their diet: potatoes, sodas, even diet, honey, all grains, exept may be steel cut slow cooked oatmeal in a very small amounts, corn in any form, most if not all root vegetables, beans and legumes, milk, etc. try to build your meals around lean protein: poultry, beef, fish, eat lots of leafy greens and salads and non-starchy vegetables, like cucumbers, bell peppers, asparagus, radishes, zukkini, artichokes, etc. the greener the better.
add some good fats, like olive oil and nuts to your diet, may be low fat greek yogurt or any plain sf yougurt in moderation and some cheese. berries are always the best choice for fruit because they are low GI. as I remeber this book advocates very low fat but allows even white bread, which I think should be avoided at any cost even by healthy folks. if you can't do without bread at all, try some bran crackers or low carb breads, not sure which one is better, there are many on the market now. I'd try to go with plain foods first, then may be add some substitutes later. low carb whey protein powder mixed with water is good as a snack. add some nut butter or mix it with sf soy milk+ flax meal, and you have a very tasty shake.
Diabetes solution is a very informative book and gives you lots of information on diabetes. read it and then decided which plan is good for you. there are many books on the market but the low carb concept is the same.

If you are very insulin resistant, I think the diet you mention may be very difficult for you to deal with. The insulin resistant diet that I have read of allows many more carbs than Atkins or Bernstein and it is those extra carbs that make it so very hard for many people to deal with. It may be just enough extra carbs to keep lots of insulin flowing and thus make you hungry all the time. It might be easier for you to go on Bernstein or Atkins induction at first - sort of a clean break to stop some of the hunger and cravings. If that works for you, you could gradually add more carbs as is mentioned in Atkins. It is said that weight loss will "cure" insulin resistance but insulin resistance makes it so darn hard to lose weight - Catch 22. The amount of insulin resistance and ease of weight loss varies by person. Try the lower carb and you may be one of the lucky ones who can gradually add a few carbs and still lose weight. Good luck!

Hi-

Insulin resistance was a precursor for Diabetes 2 for me. Although I lost about 20 pounds since diagnosis and eat under 30 carbs most days, I am still insulin resistant. I have to test before and after I eat new foods to see how they affect me- with a glucose meter. It's so individual, both weight loss and individual reaction to carbs. You have to learn what works for you. So whatever way you find it the most palatable- either start out slow or go cold turkey and then fine tune. I'm working my way down to Bernstein's 6-6-12.
Unfortunately, even though I decreased some of my insulin resistance, it's still there, even with having a BMI of 21 and exercising 6x a week. But it has improved.
