Hi,

I lift free weights fairly often during the week. I am 5'
10inch in height with hardly an ounce of fat. I'm a little
over 10 stone.

I'm not a big eater and so it's difficult to increase bulk.

I am considering purchasing some Protein shakes.

I would like to know if those of you who drink them find they
made much of a difference when you started taking them.

Also where would I be able to purchase these. Are they
expensive?

Thanks for your help.

You can make your own shakes. Just get some whey protein. Here
in the USA you can get whey protein for about fifty cents for
20 gram serving which is pretty economical. I imagine it is
about the same in the UK.

Just add it to milk. YOu can also add peanut butter, fruit,
flax oil to increase caloric content and blender it up.

So eat more.

You need more than just protein. This makes two largish drinks
for use when bulking:

56g (2serves) Optimum Nutrition Whey Protein or equivalent
500ml (2cups) Skim Milk
500ml (3cup) Skim Milk Powder 1 banana 50g unsalted
peanuts/peanut butter 4 teaspoons Nestle Malted Milk
Drink/Sustagen/Malt flavour Milo etc 1 tablespoon
Malt Extract or honey (to taste)

Drink that every day as well as your three meals per and you
will put on weight. There's over 1200 calories in that little
lot, plus loads of calcium, potassium and B-group vitamins.
Just don't go overboard with the malt extract as it's
incredibly sweet. Personally, I tend to leave the peanuts out
since I'm not keen on nut-flavoured drinks and use them
throughout the day as nibblies.

Health food shops. Some are more expensive than others. Like
several people here I find Optimum Nutrition good value.

Optimum is good, but I also like ProLab, and the best tasting
stuff on the market is Cytosport (Muscle Milk)... Since I am
also a resupplier for a number of gyms and other outlets, I've
had a chance to sample alot of the products on the market. The
"matrix" proteins are a good idea, but, unless you're pretty
serious, they're out of most people's league for the price.

I've tried Pro-Lab too...good stuff. But the stuff I use now
is Pro-Rated, and I buy it at Costco. Under $19 for 6 lbs.
Best deal around. It's also the best tasting vanilla protein I
have ever tasted. Their website is www.proteinusa.net if you
want to check it out. Of course, you need a Costco to shop at.
However, you may be able to buy it from Costco online. It's
half the price of anywhere else I've found, even with my gym
membership discount.

Each to his own. I reckon Max's caramel creme flavour is to
die for but I'm not paying Max's prices again. In any event, I
don't know the brands you mention, but one thing Optimum can
say a lot can't is that it's been tested and found to meet its
label claims, no small thing in this game.

hm... I guess each Costco store sells different things,
because mine (St. Louis Park, MN) doesn't sell Pro-Rated
(which I've bought online) and instead has a "WorldWide" whey
powder that tastes a hell of a lot better than Pro-Rated, at
least for the chocolate flavor, and it's about $25 for 6lb.

it also doesn't have any Splenda, which Pro-Rated contains,
and is sweetened with Acesulfame-K. not that I have a thing
about Splenda being bad, I just don't like the taste.
