Hi all,
I have just re-introduced myself to atkins this weekend. Anyway, I was bouncing around the web and found a post from a nutritionist that said the majority of weight we lose on atkins is muscel. something about the body only being able to lose 2-3lbs of fat a week so the rest is muscel. Is this true. I have seen so many of you that have lost 50+ pds in in a short period of time. please let me know. thanks so much

The initial weight loss is both fat loss and water loss. Atkins is a diuretic diet(water loss) so it is important that you are adding water and water soluble nutrients to your diet to counter the dehydrating effects.
You are eating enough protein and fats that it does not attack your muscles-your body will use the fat for fuel first. Read Dr. Atkins explanation of the process in DANDR

If you are eating plenty of proteins and fats you are not losing muscle. Not all all!!!

There have been studies that have shown that LCers do NOT lose muscle while low fat dieters DO lose it. So you are far better off in the muscle department to do LC.
And recent studies have shown that LCers lose almost twice as much weight as the low fat subjects in the study.

I am living proof that it is the fat that you are loosing on any Low Carb WOE because before I started this I had dimples everywhere except for my face and now those are gone and I can see muscle tone all over, so if I was loosing muscle instead of fat I think the dimples would have gotten worse not gone away.

"the body only being able to lose 2-3lbs of fat a week"
That is the funniest thing I've read yet! Boy they're really reaching, aren't they?
Sorry feather....not laughing at you. Most of us on here have read so many articles that give all kinds of wild ideas as fact. Check out eh research and media forum. But be prepared. Once you start reading you might find yourself up all night!

The only way you are going to lose muscle is if you also follow a low cal starvation diet. I have lost 80+ pounds in four months and, since I started really exercising have gained muscle. I don't know how the person you quoted firgured out this information, but from looking at the posts on the forum, it is pretty easy to tell that the "maximum" weight in lbs of fat you can lose in a week varies from person to person. It all depends on age, starting weight, gendre, activity levels...

Can you say B*LL S**T (good, cause I don't want to say it on the forum). The media is willing to publish anything without the facts. I am lifting weights and I know how much I could lift before Atkins, and how much I can lift now. It's HIGHER now. Think about it...if you want to be a muscle builder and you go to one of these nutritionists, what do they tell you to do? Increase your protein intake is what they tell you...gee...Atkins is a protein diet basically.
