I have heard that the state of a fat outside the body is the
same state it will become inside the body; therefore oils
(such as olive oil) will pass through the body, unabsorbed. Is
this true, or some sort of urban legend?

Myth, an organic oil, such as olive, is broken down chemically
during digestion. Mineral oil, sometimes taken as a laxative,
is not digested and exits through the gut. None of the fats
remain in their external form because of digestion. Maybe they
were talking about the amount of saturated fat. At room
temperatures it tends to be a solid, unlike an oil such as
olive which is not saturated. Both are broken down into basic
organic chemicals for use in the body.

If you don't normally eat much fat, then a huge intake of it
will result in a goodly portion going straight through until
your body accommodates and you absorb it all.
