Are sugar alcohols harmful if someone is a recovering alcoholic?

No, they do not contain any alcohol. I believe that they are actually called polyols.

With 15 years recovery ... I've struggled with the same question... The main point of the candies (which are very small by the way) is to use sparingly for your sweet tooth. I've had 3 in a month and 1/2.

I don't think this will lead to a relapse

They may be chemically in the class of alcohols, but they probably won't make you drink. They make my lower intestine explode, and that's a more immediate incentive to not eat them.

ALso, I notice my mood stinks afterward, and that's as likely to be from the other things in there--chocolate ice cream is worse for me than vanilla, for example--so I'm trying to stay away from that whole frankenfood group.

Have to admit, eating some really does make me want more.

We have some people who will understand my problem. I am starting next week on atkins and am told no alcohol for two weeks and then i can start to have a few low carb beers but watch the carbs. Thing is 2 WEEKS NO ALCOHOL? I usually have a couple of beers with lunch beer after work on fridays cocktails before dinner every night a bottle of wine with dinner and brandy or some sort of whiskey before bed.

Ummmm how does one who is dependent on the "juice" stay off it while engaging this WOE? I figurte some of ya have gone a time without the "juice" so tell me how that is done if you please.

You might be able to find a new beverage that interests you. I'm a HUGE cider drinker- and the lowest I've found is 8g per bottle. Better than the average 20- but as beer is not an option for me... anyway. If you are a soda drinker you can try the Diet Rite brand. They have some really good flavors and it's a good distraction. One thing to watch for when you can drink again- your tolerance may go down. Irish or not when I low carb I am a really cheap drunk so be careful.

Just a suggestion. Only you can tell how hard it is to go without alcohol, but if you can't, there is a problem.
