I just tried the Entenmann's butter cake & while enjoying every morsel, I realized that I could easily eat half the cake at one sitting. Then I got to thinking about the early days of the low fat era when all the new products hit the market. Anyone else a little concerned that we will all overeat these new lc products and sabotage our woe? Don't get me wrong, I love the variety, but knowing my "sweet tooth" I am reminding myself to proceed w/caution! Your thoughts?

I saw these products in wally world yesterday but didn't but them because I have way too much wait to lose and I just knew I wasn't going to police myself.
However I think they are great for maintaince.
I through out all the things I can't have and hope to not bring them in again until I meet goal

DH and I tried the Entenmann's cookies, butter cake, nut loaf and coffee cake. I cut them into pieces (about 10) and freeze. We don't eat them as fast that way. Also, they must use a ton of maltitol because both of us had trouble gas after eating just a normal slice. My Mom had a terrible reaction to just half a cookie and made several trips to the bathroom. She's never going near their products again. She is also LCing and has to be careful (no flax seed, no nuts) but loves the RS chocolate mints and eats one a day with no problem. But half a cookie and WHAM!
Wonder how many people who don't know about sugar alcohols end up on the pot thinking they have a bug just because they ate some cake? There are no warnings on the package and lots of people will try it just because its lower in sugar/calories that the regular products.
Saw a woman on a low fat diet with the little SF/LF cheesecakes in her cart. They are sweetened with maltitol but also do not have any warnings. Sugar alcohols are popping up in products all over now but I doubt most consumers realize the price they may have to pay for eating them.

I suppose,in a way, the sugar alcohol will limit our consumption!! I learned the hard way several years ago w/sf chocolates! Glad I was at home at the time!! Felt like a hot air balloon! I too divided the cake into slices & put them in the freezer for portion control. I just don't want this woe to fail for everyone just because we eat too much of "allowed foods". On the other hand, I really like having so many convenient options now. Can we have our cake & eat it too? I sure hope so!

Just because these products are out there does not mean we have to eat them. you can choose what to eat just like before. The rule I use is not to bring into the hose what I know I cannot control. These things are great for those on maintenance but just dont fit into my weightloss picture

They do have a warning on the package but you can't see it until you open it - it's on the edge facing you once you open the package. If you stick to a one inch slice, theoretically it shouldn't bother you if you can eat a whole serving of something like the RS candy - I think the Entenmanns pound cake has 11g malitiol per serving. Moderation is the key...

I stall and gain whenever I eat the sugar alcohol laden products. They also upset my digestive system terribly. I envy people who can enjoy them but they are OUT for me.

We all know that we do not have to eat them because they are there... I think she was just simply stating that all of these new items make i harder to eat well and not indulge a little more at times. Obviously we all demonstrate self control at times but it is not always easy. I am impressed w/ her honesty in saying it is making it harder for her.

All of you are right! I have mixed feelings about these products, but surely lc ANYTHING is better than high carb. Anyone who is losing weight or maintaining exercizes self control. One of my main concerns are people who haven't educated themselves in this woe and see the "low carb" label as a green light to overindulge. Then they gain weight & blame the whole concept. I am very pleased that this woe has "caught on" and I would hate to see it go down the drain because of ignorance. I remember the early days when everything had to be made from scratch. So many people just don't have time to prepare acceptable "treats". These products are great in that regard, but perhaps we do need to advance the whole concept anytime we can, so the general public can get the big picture. Wish Dr. A was still w/us!
