The more I read about Maltitol the more confused I become about it.
The question is:
If I subtract Maltitol grams from carb grams is the result net effective carbs?

Yes, it is. Ie 40 grams carbs, 38 of which are malitol gives 2 grams of effective carbs. This only works if you live in the USA.
Of course the malitol is also effective - effective at making you run to the loo that is!

Not 2 grams of effective carbs, you probably meant "net carbs"?
Effective carb count (ECC) is carbs minus fiber.
Net carbs, is an atkins nutritionals formula, dervied by subtracting a few things, including fiber and sugar alcohol.
