Hello, I haven't posted in a few years but I hope I'm still
welcome :))

I was taking Glucophage XR 1500mg and Actos but now I'm just
taking 45mg of Actos every day for my type II Diabetes. I
started to go to a Gym which brought my sugars down and was
able to stop one med and since Glucophage XR gave me Diarrhea
even at only 500mg that was the one I stopped. I'm having a
lot of water retention and my doc just added a water pill but
I would rather switch then add another pill, it just doesn't
seem right to me to add a pill to fix a problem from the first
pill and then maybe have to add another pill (Potassium) to
fix a possible problem from the second pill.. Can anyone offer
some suggestions I can give my doc? (Not Glocovance, it's too
strong) Love Cathy

If someone listens, or stretches out a hand, or whispers a
kind word of encouragement, or attempts to understand a lonely
person, extraordinary things begin to happen.

Excess water retention is the plague of the TZD's like
Actos, Avandia and that 3rd one still in clinical trials.

AFAIK, the only way out is to try another brand of TZD. If
Actos is too troublesome, try Avandia.

Bad news:

The TZD's and Glucophage are powerful tools in the attack on
Type 2, i.e.

a. Lose fat lb
b. Gain muscle lb
c. Exercise every day
d. Ration Carb, split daily carb over small meals
e. Take Glucophage (metformin) and/or Actos/Avandia
f. Add insulin shots

If you can't tolerate "e", then you have to go full speed with
a, b, c, d and maybe even "f."

I had a similar problem but, I started with Glucophage then
migrated to Glucovance which gave me less problems with gas
pains but, problems still continue, so 3 weeks ago I started
with Amaryl at 4 mg in the am - 2 days ago I went to 4mg in
the am and 4mg in the evening - so far and knock on wood I am
starting to control my sugars between 100 to 120 readings -
wish you the best of luck,

Hi Jim, I started with Glucophage, then went to Actos and
Glucophage XR. The tummy problems were horrible but I stuck
with it for about 6 years. I've tried Glucovance and it
lowered my BG way too low. I think I'm going to ask for
Avandia next time I go to the doc. Love Cathy
