Hi there,
I am on Atkins now, but willing to learn about SBD. Would anyone of you tell me the difference of Atkins and SBD?
Thanks in advance.

Hey - I'd love to answer your question but I've never been on Atkins and I'm starting SB tomorrow. I've "heard" that the difference really lies with the intake of fat - but I could be wrong.

I have both books. The main difference is basically the high fat in Atkins as compared to the low-fat in South Beach. I think the lifelong or final stage in both are pretty much the same. I haven't compared them closely on the final stage, but from first glance, that's how it appears to me.
On Atkins, for breakfast you eat sausage, eggs, cheese, butter, etc... You can have up to 20 gms carbs a day during Induction.
During the first 2 wks on South Beach, an example of breakfast would be egg substitute, lowfat cheese, 6 ounces of veggie juice, etc...
Remember those are brief examples of the first two weeks on both plans.
I am doing Atkins because for me it's easier for me to follow and stick the what is allowed.

Wait - I thought we were allowed to have eggs on Phase 1...or am I missing something (which wouldn't surprise me because I'm already confused and I haven't started yet!)

You are allowed to have eggs on phase one, but not everyday like on Atkins.

Oh my goodness!
So what do I eat for breakfast other than eggs? Can I have egg whites? I also heard veggies are okay - like spinach, etc...

Hi Liz,
I am new to this board, but have been doing the SBD for 3 weeks now. The first 2 weeks you have either a 2 egg omlet, or egg sub and turkey bacon. There are a couple of different recipes to try out. I did the spinich breakfast things and they were ok. I was never hungry! Now I have a bowl of oatmeal with strawberries, fruit smoothies, or eggs. So after the 2 weeks, it gets more varied. Hope that helps.

hi Liz,
There's a good deal of helpful information about South Beach Diet at prevention.com (http://prevention.com/cda/feature2002/0,4780,s1-5345,00.html) .. be sure to check out all the associated links ;) Most of the articles are either taken directly from the book, or have been written/authorized by Dr. Agatston himself so you can be assured the info. is accurate.
Another inexpensive but useful resource is the South Beach Good Fats Good Carbs Guide, which is a handy small sized paperback that could fit in your purse to take shopping.
Here are some helpful quotes from the book/website:• the South Beach Diet is not low fat
• Eggs: Whole eggs are not limited unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
• Total fats are not limited, only certain types of fat. Avoid saturated fats and trans fats (hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils). Good fats--olive oil, canola oil, fats in nuts and omega-3 oils--are not limited.
hth,
Doreen
