I have been const all my life until I started eating some form of fruit ,except bananas, with (every mean). No problem as long as I remembered to do that.So I was concerned with being const upon starting this plan.A major concern.I consulted an herbologist at the pharmacy and she recomm:

Brand name- Naturade. natural detoxifying formula concentrate-aloe vera gel supplement with pure aloe pulp & natural herb blend. It is mainly aloe vera juice. It sold for $15.29 and makes 32 servings. You mix 2oz. water w/ 2 Tab.water and drink after every meal.

Brand name-Nature's Way.Intestinal release Primadophilus.90 caplets for $11.99.Take one a day.

I started my new way of eating plan just three days ago and used these two products from day one and absolutely (NO) const at all.I highly recom these peoducts.Or simular brands would be fine too.Hope this helps someone.Joyce in CAlif.

I have a good friend who is a PA (phys. assist.) and does proctology, that is, rectal exams all day long, poor fellow. Here in Atlanta, we would say: Bless his heart. Anyway, he told me that basically your body cant get enough fiber in the form of bulk psyllium husks. I buy this stuff in a big can without any of the fillers or sweeteners in Metamucil and drink it at night whenever I feel like I havent had too much fiber that day. It doesnt taste great, but I certainly feel great the next morning.

Any thoughts on this subject?

"in general" .. psyllium works best when taken regularly, but everyone is different. Some folks who routinely eat a low fiber diet would do well to take it every day. It is an excellent fiber, for bulking up the intestinal contents (note - be sure to drink lots of water with it!) ... it is useful in this regard both for constipation and for diarrhea.

Jim, you are right ... the plain psyllium that you buy in bulk at the health food store is more effective, and definitely sugar-free, no additives. Metamucil is highly refined ... some of the psyllium husks are sieved out to make the product smoother tasting. As well, the so-called sugar-free stuff IS sweetened .... with maltodextrin, which is not technically a sugar, so they don't have to declare it .. :( .. But it is a carb nonetheless. Maltodextrin is made from corn, and it's the powdery stuff they use to make the bulk forms of powdered artificial sweeteners such as Equal, Splenda and SugarTwin.

Aloe vera juice has a lot to recommend it too ... but I have read that the bowel can become tolerant to it, so it's best to not use it on an ongoing basis. In "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" the Balch's suggest using it for cleansing the bowel and restoring healthy balance of the "friendly bacteria".

I've been low-carbing for 11 weeks now and thankfully haven't had a problem in the constipation department. Each morning I have a protein shake with one tablespoon of flax seed oil and I think that is what has been helping me to keep regular.
