NEW YORK (Reuters) - Snack foods company Frito-Lay said Wednesday it is introducing two new types of chips to capitalize on the popularity of low-carbohydrate diets.
The two new products, called Doritos Edge and Tostitos Edge, will cut out 60 percent of the carbohydrates that are in regular Doritos and Tostitos.
Frito-Lay, a unit of PepsiCo Inc., has already eliminated trans fats from its brands. Trans fats, which give products a longer shelf life, have been linked to heart disease.
The new chips will use soy proteins and fiber as substitute ingredients, the company said in a statement. Both Tostitos Edge and Doritos Edge will have six net carbohydrates, 10 grams of protein, and three grams of fiber.
The low-carb craze, popularized by the high-protein Atkins diet, has food companies rolling out new products to jump on the bandwagon.
Fast food chains McDonald's Corp. and Burger King revamped their menus to cater to customers counting their carbs.
The alcohol industry is also taking notice. Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc.'s low-carb Michelob Ultra beer has been a big profit driver for the past year and Adolph Coors Co. is rolling out Aspen Edge beer to take a part of the health-conscious market.
Spirits companies such as Diageo Plc. are using their advertising to point out that many of their drinks have always been low carbohydrate offerings.
Doritos Edge is currently being tested in Phoenix, and both products will be available across the United States in May.

I just saw this on CNN (http://money.cnn.com/2004/01/14/news/companies/lowcarb_doritos/index.htm?cnn=yes) ! Yippeee! I hate pork rinds and can tolerate even bad LC crackers and chips. This is great news. I wonder how big a "6 gram net carbs" portion is.

Great news! I love tortilla chips, not so much for themselves, but with stuff. I like scooping my food, like chili, or having nachos. So hooray!

OMG, this is awesome news! Thanks so much for sharing it! Of course, I live in the middle of nowhere, so we probably won't get them here for another 5-10 years, but at least I know they're on their way!

Beginning this spring, the company will launch a new line extension of Doritos and Tostitos that has less than half the carbohydrates of its top-selling tortilla chip brands.
The new great-tasting products, which are named Doritos Edge and Tostitos Edge, have a total of 6 net carbohydrates, 10 grams of protein, and 3 grams of fiber. Doritos Edge is now in test market in Phoenix, Arizona. Doritos Edge and Tostitos Edge will be available in stores across the country in May.
To create the new products, the company will use soy proteins and fiber to convert to a lower carbohydrate chip that tastes great. This move will result in a 60 percent reduction of carbohydrates in both products. These two new products will generate incremental growth for the two brands, Doritos and Tostitos, which have combined sales of nearly $3 billion in the U.S. annually.

That'll still be too many for me. And what about the trans fats?

Oh, no! Doritos were one of my major problems in gaining weight. They are just too addictive for me. Even if they go to zero carbs I will have to stay away from them (please, universe, help!) and any aisle they are in. Hand me that romaine leaf for some crunch. Please, other members, don't let me slide down that doritos runway again! I know I won't be able to handle it.

Hi everyone,
I posted on the geographic board already, but wanted to comment here too.
I live in Phoenix, AZ and have tried the LC Doritos being tested at select Subway stores right now. This is how I'd describe them....
They are thinner and crispier than most LC chips. You know how some are so thick and heavy? Well these are not at all. They are quite light, which is a refreshing change for LC chips.
They don't taste bad at all... they still have a slight LC taste, but are pretty good. The counter guy at Subway described them this way, and I agree completely: If you are used to eating LC chips, you'll love these because they are the best. If you are not used to eating LC and aren't familar with the LC taste, (and expecting regular Doritos), you'll hate them. Pretty accurate, I think.
I'm sure many folks will like these when they roll out nationwide. I know I'll keep bags on hand, LOL.
Bye for now,
Jill in Phoenix

They are now making low carb doritos! Whoo Hoo! I have only seen them at Walgreens. I'm sure everyone else will start carrying them though. They have i think 5 or 6 net grams of carbs. I tried one and they are not as crunchy as the regular ones, but definitely gets rid of the doritos cravings! they are 3 dollars a bag and one bag has 6 servings. Not bad!

My Super Walmart got these in, they have nacho cheese and cool ranch flavors. I was never a nacho cheese fan, so I've only tried the cool ranch, but flavor-wise they are really really close. Lighter texture than the regular. I wouldn't eat them every day but they'd be nice to have as an option at a party, or in a single serving bag at Subway etc.

I really enjoy the tostitos, especially since I am a college student and parties are a major draw. Now when we have parties here I can have some chips and salsa like everyone else!
