What about using sugar alcohols on the SB diet?

I wish I knew the answer, but I cannot find any info on this in the book. Is someone knows please tell us!

There's no information or studies done (yet) to measure where sugar alcohols fit on the Glycemic Index. Technically, they're absorbed much more slowly than regular carbs, and thus have a reduced impact on blood sugar and insulin. Even so, it's a YMMV thing .. some people spike, others have no effect. Sugar alcohols also have calories .. 2.3 to 3 calories per gram.

The protein bars made with glycerine (such as Atkins Advantage or Myoplex bars) would fall into similar category. Glycerine isn't a sugar alcohol. But it is absorbed and can be readily converted into triglycerides if the diet is also higher in carbs. Also, glycerine is higher in calories than sugar .. 4.3 per gram. Since you're limited to only 75 calories per day of optional sweet foods .. and one bar typically has roughly 200 calories .. you'd only be allowed to have 1/3rd of a bar. Doesn't really seem worth it :daze:

The 75 calories per day of optional sweet treats includes SF hard candies. These usually contain sorbitol or other s/a. What you need to watch out for is that many of the SF chocolate bars, peanut butter cups and ice creams also contain hydrogenated trans fats or saturated fats .. Russell Stover SF chocolates come to mind. Those are a definite no-no :nono:

You can also have a SF fudgesicle, or fat-free SF pudding (in Phase 2) within your 75 calorie per day limit.
