Hi all,
I was wondering if sugar alcohol is allowed? How is it counted as far as carbs go?
Please let me know because I am finding all kinds of foods with sugar alcohol in them.

They say not to on induction but I do. I use sugarfree gum. And I mean a whole lot of it. I lost 10 pounds my first week with the sugarfree gum. BUT, I drank about 5 bottles (33.3 ounces, thats over 2 pounds) of tap water everyday. That makes about 10 pounds of water a day. The more gum I used, the more water I drank. The gum made me thirsty.

Sugar Alcohols are carbs but they are carbs that are said to have only a small impact on blood sugar. I would say about 75% of us stall on them, meaning we don't lose or gain weight when eating them. You could give it a try for a couple days just to see how you react to them... everybody is different. I have a low carb bar about 2 times a week without a problem.

Sugar alchohols also have a laxative effect. There is always a serving size noted on the side of any product. Many people cannot exceed that without having problems. I don't tolerate sugar alchohols well at all. I can't even have one serving without bloating, cramps etc. Not worth it for me!

Click on "Low Carb Tips" from the orange menu bar near the top of the page. There's an article all about Sugar Alcohols which may be helpful for you. :rose:

While it's true that sugar alcohols may have little impact on blood sugar or insulin levels, it's important to remember that they do contribute calories which don't just disappear into thin air. They're not a "free" food. ;)
