Hi Fay

Can I ask for your e-mail address (via Private Messaging) so I can let you have details of the venue nearer the time? Private Messaging capacity is limited and I often forget to check mine anyhow so it would be helpful.

Hope you are keeping well.
Take care

It's all right Andy. There will be other opportunities. When the time and circumstances are right ... meanwhile it is good to continue with the conversations online.

There are some who would like to come but for personal reasons are unable to come this time. I respect that. I DO expect you ALL to be with us in spirit and thank you for all your kind wishes that it goes well.

However this is the list of people who have committed to coming. I will add to the same list as and when there are more definite confirmations.

Ken
Margaret
Aviva
Yvonne
Fiona - that's moi of course! :)
Sabine (with her little daughter ... perhaps)

Carole and Fibi (quite possibly)

For various reasons (ease, avoid confusion, simplicity etc.) I will keep this list updated with any changes to the List.

Take care. Looking forward to it.

Is it ok, if I bring my daughter with me ?

Which is the nearest Tube station ?

Hi Sabine

I don't really see a MAJOR problem with your daughter being there. However it does depend ... she will be the only child there and may get bored. We are holding this first gathering at a friend's place ... her place is not exactly child-proof (if you know what I mean ;) ) I would not dream of bringing my nephew along for instance because, much as I love him, he is such an unstoppable LIVE-WIRE that it would be too distracting and unsafe to have him with me !

You know your daughter best. I will let you decide. Perhaps if you bring something that will keep her busy and occupied it would help.

Hope you will come though.
Take care.

fiona
Sun, Sep-02-01, 07:03
For everyone's benefit I thought I would just mention here that the best way of keeping to a current list of people coming/not coming etc. is to keep amending my original one on page 1 rather than creating a new one which is only minutely different from the last one.

You can see when it was last amended at the bottom of the post.
Take care.

Hi Fiona

Well, I will definitly come along (I see what I do about my daughter. She is ok, regarding wrecking places, but you are right, she might well get bored), could you let me know the exact details ?

See you,
Sabine

I am soooo looking forward to meeting you all next Saturday.

Some final thoughts ... if you have any please let me know.

I would like this to be a fun time.

However I am aware we will be expected to post a photo on the Board. Naturally they all want to see our beautiful faces. Give it some thought. I myself do not have a digital camera or a scanner so would be unable to post it. Assuming you would all be happy to have your photo online in the first instance, would you prefer it to be faceless (there are some on the board!), bodiless or top to toe? We'll take a vote on the day.

Secondly I manage to put spices into almost everything I cook. I just wanted to put out feelers about how you feel about them. Naturally I would make it mild but wondered how you all feel? I can lock the Spice cupboard away if anyone doesn't like Indian? But do let me know. Menu is quite simple. Curried chicken drumsticks, Devilled eggs and nuts. Assorted herbal teas, tea and coffee for drinks.

You are welcome to bring a recipe or a LC dish of your choice or anything else you wish to share but most important is that you yourselves come.

I have some homework for you all. Learn the words of my favourite dance - adapted to LC of course. We'll see how things go but I'd like to teach you the movements that go with the words - you will enjoy it ... I promise!

May the road rise beautifully for you
May the wind be always on your back
May the sun shine warmly upon your face
May the rain fall softly on your rice fields
And until we meet again
May you be supported on your LC journey.

Finally I think you all have the address.

fiona
Sun, Sep-02-01, 12:02
Following some points people have raised I have decided to post this on the Board (minus some finer details). It also gives those who will be with us “in spirit” an idea of how the very first UK LC Gathering is progressing.

There is parking available at or near the venue. It is reasonably safe – what exactly is “safe” these days?

I think the photo dilema is sorted so there will be a photo on the Board – not quite sure if the whole group will be in it but definitely 2-3 people are quite happy about it.

Although the menu at the moment is fairly simplistic I am renowned for going totally overboard when entertaining … nervous energy builds up as the day draws closer and my final menu never looks anywhere near the original. This time my only aim is to have NO carb items on the table. There will be non-spicy foods as well.

Alcohol: I haven’t included it because I myself am teetotal and my knowledge about alcoholic drinks is minimal, never mind Low Carb ones. However if anyone would like to bring a bottle of what they KNOW to be lowcarb .. feel free.

fiona
Sun, Sep-02-01, 12:36
As if by magic ... the answer to my question as provided by Karen.

The low-down on alcohol is this...
Your body burns in this order: alcohol, carbs and then fat. Alcohol has no carbs, but because your body chooses alcohol first your fat is the last ot burn.

But to answer your question, any spirit with a sugar free mixer.

Karen

The thread is in Chit-Chat for those interested in investigating further.

Hi Sabine,

Don't worry too much if you have to bring your daughter along as Margaret (my wife) is a Nursery Nurse/Brown Owl (Brownies)/ Sunday School Teacher, so she will be able to keep her occupied/happy :) :)

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Hi all,

While you are assembling in London on Saturday, I will try and get a few minutes to post on this thread. If anyone is online there at the time, I will try and visit the Chatroom (if any of you are agreeable) for a few minutes of online chat. That is, if any of you are interested, and if my wonderful children are being co-operative!

Good luck in any case.

Best wishes.

That would be interesting. I am game.

What do the others think?

About 6pm GMT. Anyone else interested (don't necessarily have to be in UK) in LIVE CHAT also welcome.

Unless we get carried away with the dancing and forget Andy!

Take care.

Hi Andy,

I just tried the chat, and it's working, and the UK bunch are online. Give it a try again. Remember to click the "Load Client" and once you see the chat screen, first thing to do is enter a unique name, say lc_andy_uk, something unlikely to be used by someone else.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info, Wa'il. Sorry I did not see your post sooner, but I did not stay online long (not a good time for me). My fault really, I should have done a dummy run before it counted. I did think of it, but thought there probably would not be anyone else in the Chat Room at the time. At least I'll know for future reference.

Hi Fiona,

Just a quickie to send a BIG thank you for your efforts this afternoon and evening. Both Margaret and I thought it was a great success. It was really good to be able to put faces to names and to discuss 'low carbing' with other like minded people in a relaxed atmosphere.

Yvonne: Don't take too long to get back into the Atkins wol :)

Aviva: Have a safe journey back to Israel when u return home.

We are looking forward to the next  already

Thanks once again,

Hi everyone

Yes Ken it was great fun. I really enjoyed it. Thank you all who came.

Thank you Andy for trying to be there. Actually we were all sooo busy chatting that I had to quietly slip away to see if you were online and was secretly (might as well confess) glad that u weren't and I could get back to the others. Would you like to have a dummy run in Chat with me sometime? 5pm today?

Hey ... an idea :exclm: Why don't we have regular Gatherings online once or twice a week? What do you think?

Margaret: Waiting eagerly for your first post online ... time to get computer literate ... we don't just support Low carbing here ... as Andy will confirm I am sure!!

Take care.

On a develish note  to motivate those of you who didn't make it this time here's the menu. We were soooo busy chatting we completely forgot about the dancing ... but I am saving it for next time.

And for those of you who were here ... yes, there are one or two differences in the planned Menu and the reality of it eg the jelly babies were so floppy they didn't make it to the table (!) I think I wanted to keep them all to myself actually ;)

A special thanks to Aviva who came early to help with the preparation.

Mon, Sep-17-01, 16:52
Hi everybody

I haven't been around on the forum for the last week :( . Busy at work and we (Margaret and I) have re-opened youth club after the summer holidays, Yes, summer is over  as the weather will testify.

Anyway, how is everybody? I hope you are all keeping on the straight and narrow (eating wise). I must confess to falling off the wagon yesterday  . We went to a Christening, Margaret was a Godmother, we all went out for lunch afterwards. I started off ok, one glass red wine, Roast Beef (No Yorkshire pudding), only one small new potato, broccoli and brussel sprouts. BUT THEN  Chocolate ice cream sundae  and even worse, I enjoyed it (the shame if it). I was straight back on the rails today hopefully with no lasting effects on the weight lose. I'm surprised how easily I was tempted and hope I can learn from the experience and resist next time.

Fiona, I hope you are well. I've still had no luck getting Margaret to post on the forum as yet, but we have been busy this last week as explained above.
Did you have any luck at the Health Food Shop?.
Has Aviva gone home yet?
Have you had the photo's from last weekend developed yet? Is it really only a week ago, it seems so much longer than that. But a lot has happened in the world since then. I still find it so hard to believe.
Soooo many questions...........

That's enough of my ramblin' for now.

fiona

Hi Ken, Margaret, Everyone

<I must confess to falling off the wagon yesterday > !! Me too  I haven't been eating too well since last Tuesday ... is it only one week? ... feels like a year .. those pictures have been making me sick. Anyway went window shopping for a couple of hours before my dance class last night and got really hungry. Popped into a store and oooooh those carbs sure looked appealing ... my blood sugar must have been low at the time. Anyway I gave in to a yummy huge blueberry muffin. I do know exactly what you mean about enjoying it to the full - absolute bliss.

Next time I go out I am going to eat extra beforehand. You could have had an extra helping of the roast beef instead. Best is to stay away from temptation. I had to risk hurting a friend who is coming round for lunch by flatly refusing to have his request for Rasmalai (Indian sweet - 110% carbs). He'll probably eat one or two and leave me staring at the rest of the pack and I don't trust myself with carbs.

<Did you have any luck at the Health Food Shop?. > Been too glued to the TV to think about that.

<Has Aviva gone home yet? > No - she is on the road site-seeing. Should be back in a few days.

<Have you had the photo's from last weekend developed yet? > Afraid that is going to take some time. My film has been known to remain in my camera for a year at times. Still have quite a few photos to use up.

Summer is going but there are still quite a few sunny spells. Since last Tuesday I have been seeing everything with new eyes and being VERY GRATEFUL for little blessings (the sun, the park, a laughing child, the peace and serenity of home) that I took for granted before.

Take care.

hello Fiona

This is my first attempt at trying to reply to you. Mind you if Ken keeps being impatient and the message keeps disappearing it may well be my last. I was taught to use a typewriter (whats that i hear you say) and i wish they hadn't disappeared.
Not that i would be talking to you now if this was a typewriter.
Diet going ok apart from sunday I won't go into this in to much detail. all i know after 8 weeks of no sugar/alcohol i did not feel to good yesterday, Mind you a good lesson not to do it again :D , on the other hand you don't gain 2 God-daughters in one day very often.
Good news though i went shopping for an outfit for the christening and i have gone down from a size 22 to an 18. Also a lady at church altered the dress you saw me in. This is making me more determined to keep at it.
Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi Margaret, and welcome!

Sorry this is not Fiona. She usually posts in the morning, so I expect you will hear from her in about8 or 9 hours from now. But this is such an occasion, I thought she (and you) would appreciate a reply right away.

Congratulations on getting onto the forum. Sorry I didn't meet you last week, maybe next time. Sounds like you had great fun, and a really worthwhile time.

If you (like Ken) are on a low-carb diet, that must be very useful at mealtimes. My own wife is a vegetarian, and some of my children will eat meat, some won't. Mealtimes are a nightmare, especially as I won't eat vegetables.

No doubt Fiona will tell you how to start a journal, and all those things which will make you a separate entity from Ken, so I'll just say cheerio for now, and great to see you make it at last!

P.S. Hi Ken!

Best wishes,

Andy

Hi Margaret

Wellcome to the forum and congratulations on your weight loss ! I hope we will be seing more posts from you now. I can see you and Ken will be fighting over the PC soon :) .
I am sorry to hear that you felt bad after the party, but I didn't feel too good last Sunday either. The party I went to after our meeting went on until 5am and included lots of alcohol of various kinds :( Thankfully most girls are on some kind of diet, so I was able to stick to whiskey with diet coke all evening (apart from a glass of Champagne) and I actually lost 1lb :D , but did I feel rotten on Sunday :( It took me all day to recover.
Never ever alcohol again  (until next time....)

Hope to see you again soon on this forum (just think of it as a complicated type-writer) and all the best
Sabine

Yes I am on a low carb diet and meal times are fairly easy although we have 2 daughters who dont like meat and keep buying lots of carbs. I'm sure i have actually stuck at this as ken and i are supporting each other. He's not going to get a new wardrobe if i cant have one! :D

Hello Margaret

I am fine (as usual :) ). I had a bit of a hectic week. At first the shock about what happened in America. I am working for an american company in the city of London, so I was very wary about going to work and as I had some holiday left I actually took Thursday and Friday off ( a bit of general lazyness and the urge of spending more time with my daughter had something to do with it as well). On Thursday afternoon I got a call from the Police, saying that my BF had been involved in an accident and if I could pick him up from hospital. It turned out, that the accident was rather serious and he had been in Hospital until today. His Parents thought I needed their morla guidance and help and Kindly offered to stay during the whole time  I know it was meant nice, but it was really the last thing I needed, so I had no time for anything and today I was back at work (thankfully I am back on shifts as of today :D ). Actually it was a relief being back at work. I managed to get my co-workers to make all the cups of tea today. Just a quick mention, that I had the in-laws staying for 4 days, and tea and coffee came rolling to my desk :D
I was very good on the diet, but haven't managed to lose any weight. Seem to be stuck at the moment, but I am also not drinking enough water. I don't feel like it. Just the thought of it makes me cringe  I tried diet coke, but I don't even want to drink that. So I am sitting here with a glass of wine ( so much for the no more alcohol ;) ) and I hope I am feeling better tomorrow.

Just thought i'd post as i've just read the thread and it seems like you've all had a load of fun.

Am I the only LCer in the frozen north?(actually I'm Welsh but since my daughter was born N of the Tyne I'm sort of related toa Geordie)

It'd certainly be possible to get to London for a repeat as my in-laws live in St John's Wood and we could use it as an excuse for the little monster to terrorize her grandparents.

I having such a good time with low-carbing. My wife is going to weight-watchers and eating lots of beansprouts and "no-point soup" (don't even ask) while I'm eating bacon and eggs, steak, salmon etc etc. The amazing thing is that i've been on diets for about the last 20 years and they've always been awful while now i'm really not very hungry and yet i've not got the horrible "giddy" feeling.

The last straw was giving up smoking 10 months ago - since May i've only been able to wear a few track suits and some shorts with elasticated waists. Anyway last night went out with some friends wearing a pair of jeans!! I have a whole wardrobe of decreasing sizes waiting for me.

Anyway i think i just want to say that this forum is actually great and i'm sure this has a lot to do with my success.

Best Wishes

Jon

Congratulations on your loss. Certainly the w2g.

Totally agree with you jon about this Forum helping to keep me on track and constantly inspiring, motivating and supporting me. It is wonderful. I can't thank all the people here enough for their support.

We might have to change the time to suit those with young children but try and come to the first one anyway.

Take care.

Hi Jon,

Spotted a couple of points of interest in your post (above). Firstly, what part of Wales do you come from? My father came from the Rhondda Valley in the South (Treorchy). Thought "Rees" was a Welsh name! So perhaps it ought to Hello Boyo instead of Way aye man (with apologies for any spelling errors).

Secondly, interesting about not getting headaches and dizziness. Neither do I. But reading around the various forums here, women often do. Is it simply to do with sex?

Thirdly, I see your start weight is close to my current weight. I'll be following behind, trying to catch you up as fast as I can. It is my intention to reach target weight by Christmas (Approx 40 lbs still to go). So if you slow down or go into a stall, I will be trying to catch you up!

As for other people from "Up North" on this forum, I do see the odd one from time to time posting a message or two, then disappearing without trace. But we are getting a good bunch here now, who seem to be more committed. Gives a better feeling of "family" and mutual support, and far better encouragement to achieve short-term objectives and long term aims. Don't you agree, Fiona?

Best wishes, and Welcome. Nice to have you aboard.

Andy.

Hi Andy,

as i mentioned when chatting i'm from Clydach Vale nr Tonypandy about 5 miles from Treorchy in the Rhondda. Mum and sister live there so down a fair bit. Been in Newcastle 6 years now but haven't lost the accent.

Like the idea of chasing down the pounds. I'm planning to do the body for life challenge (www.bodyforlife.com) from monday with lowcarb modifications and will finish the week b4 christmas so we'll see.

Cheers

Hi Jon,

I'd love to learn Welsh. One of these days when I get a bit of time...(I always remember Rowan Atkins , in one of his sketches, saying that you couldn't even say your name in Welsh without a pint of phlegm in your throat!)

i'm amazed that you should come from so close as five miles from my father's home town - I've often heard him talk about Tonypandy (didn't Fireman Sam also come from there?). Have not been back there myself since I was a babe in arms, but I did once take part in the "Night of a thousand voices" in the Royal Albert Hall. That was an amazing experience.

I looked up that link you quoted. Bit unimpressed so far, everything was too vague and indirect. Perhaps I missed something, but the crux of his "system" did not make itself clear in several screens (another minus point) and I felt generally uneasy about it.

Good luck with your own weight-loss programme. You will make it - lots of resolution and commitment. I fear you are too far ahead for me to catch up, unless you hit problems, but your target end-date seems close to mine. So who knows.

Now, this is going back to my childhood, and I'm not sure of the spelling. But it is night-time now, so I believe the correct word is "Nostard". (Apologies if it's wrong).

Best wishes,

Andy.

I think it was Pontypandy in fact. I don't actually speak more than a few bits of Welsh. What you're saying Andy is "Nos da" which is "Good night".

I think body for life is better in the book than the net. He's not going to give away his "secrets" for free is he? I've started a thread in the exercise/ckd forum as nobody else seems to have tried it although trainerdan and fern are sort of interested - its at http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20733
Be warned - there are some pics that are definitely "18" only!!

See you soon,

Have just lost my reply to this post, and do not have time to re-type it all. Thanks for putting me right on the spelling of Nos da. What does Iachyda" mean (spelling here could be suspect too).

Pontypandy would clearly have been taken from Tonypandy - rather clever, I think.

Must rush.

"Iechi da!" means something like "Good health" but its a bit untranslateable. There are another couple like this - "hiraeth" which means "homesickness" but only for Wales and "hwyl" which is a great word and sort of means "oomph" or "positive energy" etc. Welsh is a lovely poetic language but after 3 yrs enforced lessons in schoold i realised it was quite hard and did French instead. ;)

Cheers

Hi all,

Been wizzing thru last page of thread and I must say, you dissapoint me Jon, I thought it was Yakky da?! I stayed in Snowdon for a week when I was a little girl and that was all the Welsh I learnt.

Speaking of Snowdon, I'm going there the weekend of 13/14 October, Mick's son does all these outdoor things and has asked us to go up for cheering and encouragement so naturally we said yes. Forgot to mention Micks son Before - Simon 22 - he was in Chile with PW at the beginning of the year.

He likes lots of outdoor things and this is the first time he's asked us along so Micks really excited, Noo isn't, she thinks it going to be too much for a girl of her delicate nature - (She'd much rather be in her bedroom trying new ways to put make-up on or new hair designs, she's a typical girl I'm afraid but I'll get her up that mountain if it kills me!!).

It's nice reading threads when I get a chance and yes there really are a nice bunch of people on here.

I want to know something but am worried it will make me look stupid but, here goes...

What does LOL mean (I think it means lots of Love but it can't be, can it?!)

Hi Bez

I remember being confused about LOL too. The only translation I could think of at the time was Lots of Love ! Sometimes we do have to risk looking and feeling stupid to clear up the question mark in our own mind.

There is a whole list of such short-hand phrases. I'll let you have the link for it when I find it ... unless someone else gets in before me.

Doreen pointed me to this once before - I think it was at the top of the page. If it was not under FAQ (frequently asked questions) it must be under "quick hints" at the side of the page.

And Fiona, why aren't you posting in your journal? I need to keep an eye on you (for your own good, of course!)

Bez,

I have just been going back through the old posts to find Doreen's cited reference for abbreviations. She posted at the time that it was under "Low Carb Lingo", in the "Tips" section in the red help bar at the top of the page. This is now orange, and although "Tips" is still there, I can not now find "Low Carb Lingo". The original reference, if you are interested, was Fiona's journal (A winner, living life, or some such name) on about page 2 or 3.

Still not a conclusive answer, I'm afraid. Maybe someone else knows what happened to it?

Thanks everyone and sorry Ken and Margaret and Jon, I got a bit confused about who was with who in my last post so apologies, I only realised after I pressed submit reply.

It's strange, we can go about our everyday lives not even knowing our neighbours but we can log into a site like this and learn so much from each other it's unbelievable. Society today is very different and perhaps we need to re-evaluate our priorities or has the work colleague replaced that old 'neighbour over the fence'?!

You can correct mistakes Bez. Just hit the EDIT button just above the REPLY POST button on each message. It will take you back into your message.

{we can go about our everyday lives not even knowing our neighbours } Sooo true. I sometimes don't see my neighbours for months .. yet I can come here and talk to the whole world morning noon and night!! Just a little walk to my computer ... it is great. Society is changing.

I started a list when I first went on the Internet. Some of them might not work on this site, some Wa'il has made very easy for us by giving us smilies to click on; there are some specifically for LC :not on my list but hope it will help a little for the time being Bez.

Time: Suggestions please?

Venue: Ditto
There is a nice big MacDonalds in Kilburn, NW6 or Marble Arch, W1 which might be a good place especially if we meet up about 9'ish?? Won't be too busy, hopefully. If we go to Marble Arch we could go for a lovely stroll via Hyde Park afterwards? !

Jon, anyway you could make it on Saturday? afternoon perhaps - meet up for exercise/chat/fun rather than food! ... As Ken and Margaret can't make it on Sunday.

Did anyone see the survey results (of healthy take-aways) on TV (and radio) yesterday.

According to nutritional experts: Indian take-aways are worst 'cos of the fat content; English take-aways (lassagne etc) next and best of all for lowest fat content (!!) are MacDonalds Burger and chips!

We could leave it open re McD: if we feel hungry after the exercise we can pop into a cafe/restaurant that seems right.

Take care.

Jon will a couple of hours (2-4) give you enough time to get back home for the theatre? My thinking is that if we go to Marble Arch you then need to double back all the way back so a nice place not too far from St Johns Wood would be better with your time schedule. How does Golders Green Underground Station at 2pm on Saturday 17 November sound? Unless you know of some other place.

Golders Hill Park is a (steepish - I get out of breath but enjoy it) 15 min. walk away from the station. The Park will be beautiful with all the Autumn colours at this time of the year. There is a restaurant there in case it is raining. Hampstead Heath is just beautiful - I love it when I am there but don't get there often enough.

Bez we could all meet up at Golders Green or at the Restaurant in the Park. Where would you be coming from?

Kay (a new member) is very keen to join us too.

Hi Fiona

I have only just found out, that you are having another get-together (thanks No Honey).

Sorry, that I can't make it this time. I am working :( Unless you fancy changing the venue to Brick Lane / Tower Hill / St Katherines Dock ???

Thought not. ;)
Never mind. I'll be there next time ( I hope).

Maybe we could make it a venue in South London ? Don't worry, it's not really scary :D

St Katherines Dock is really nice ( allthough a bit touristy)

Have a nice time, and don't eat the buns ;)

Hi Sabine

Pity about you working that day. Would have been nice to catch up on the gossip and exchange tips.

{Maybe we could make it a venue in South London ? } I am open to suggestions if you know of a good place to meet.

{Have a nice time, and don't eat the buns ...} I know! I was wondering if it might not be safer to take some high protein food with me - a high protein soup would be just great in the park winds !! I am sure we will have fun though.

Take care.

High protein soup sounds good to me Fiona.

I know last time you had food and shared, I have some Keto Hot chocolate that I could make and bring as well as the usual nuts and things. Any other suggestions.

And, is there anywhere close by that we could go to to keep warm if it's a really bad day, it's getting very cold now and I'm not good in the cold - although a long walk would be nice if that is on the cards....what do you have planned?

Just thought, you have not confirmed the meeting place for next Saturday.

Last post said Golders Green Underground but I'll need to know where abouts in the underground. I have never been to London on my own before and as said before will need firm guidance as to where I'm going. If you can give me a shop or cafe, or a landmark then I'll be fine.

Thanks,

Do I know about cold Bez! We had our first snowfall in London yesterday. Looked great, didn't last long, sun came out - oooooh soooooo beautiful and bright: I had a dentist's appointment (9am) so went out: for some strange and inexplicable reason the dentist's office was closed and no-one in sight. So I hung around thinking he must be late or had traffic problems. One hour later I could not stand the cold another second despite having popped into shops around to warm up from time to time.

Am sitting here with the heater on; two pairs of trousers, 3-4 layers of tops; second pot of tea and still Coooooooolllllllldddd!

I tend to feel the cold a lot more since my thyroid operation years ago.

(.... stop waffling and get to the point...)... I wish we had gone to the park last time - weather was perfect for it. But thinking positively it will be good - we all need the light and the exercise more at this time of year and it will certainly do me good to show off one of my favourite parks in London.

However parks are generally colder than other places so do come prepared with lots and lots of warm layers. I am hoping to hear from Jon soon - this location was meant to fit in with his schedule as he is "guest of honour", travelling furthest and has a tight agenda for his two days in London.

Golders Green is only a tiny little station with one exit (it does have two exits but the other one is closed for the moment) and surrounded by lots of little shops and a bus depot (no parking I am afraid - especially on a Saturday afternoon).

Would people like to meet at the station at 2pm (maximum wait 5mins for late-comers) and walk on to the park 15 mins fast uphill walking and take it from there?

I know it is difficult to time journeys so perhaps those who wish to (or anyone who gets there after 2.05pm) can make their way direct to the restaurant in the park?

The way to get there is to turn left as you exit the Station walk through the bus depot - walk past the Golders Green Hippodrome - BBC Philharmonic concerts are held there so it is quite prominent - and keep walking left up North End Road until you see a gate and restaurant on your right . If it is nice and sunny you can't miss it 'cos it will be full of children and families sitting on the benches and tables outside the restaurant.

Take care.

Hi Fiona, Bez Jon and all others aiming to meet up next weekend

We are looking forward to our walk in the park (fingers crossed that the weather is good to us) and meeting up with some of our fellow LCers :) . We will be coming on the tube from Edgware so parking will not be a problem.

Fiona, I've got my digital camera, as discussed in our phone call (it was a lovely suprise to her from you) and so will will be able to publish pictures on the forum (if I've learnt how to use it by then). As I'm not really the cook in our household any suggestions for something hot to bring would be welcomed (even if it's only a flask of tea/coffee).

Keep smiling :daze:

Last couple of days have been absolutely perfect (albeit cold) for the walk in the park. I just lovvvvvvve all those autumn colours - they are soooooo rich and inspiring ... for me. I am hoping next Saturday will be just like that - hopefully even a little warmer.

What to bring ? Well I don't really want to carry more than necessary. I was just given a very useful present which might come in handy (if I feel like carrying it around) - a hot/cold (thermos) casserole dish. Haven't decided finally yet but I was thinking of bringing some chicken drumsticks (like the ones you had at the FIRST LC meeting - curried) and using the stock from it as a base for soup: broccoli, cauli, tofu.

They do serve fish and meat at the restaurant, but it is often surrounded by a lot of carbs and most the soups are carb laden. They do some wonnnnnnnnderful ice creams but I don't suppose anyone will feel like those!!!

Tea and Coffee we can easily buy there.

Judging from last time, we were all more interested in TALKING and although everyone ate, far too much food was left over - I probably went a bit mad with the proportions and had I thought of it party bags of food might have been good!!

My suggestion is just bring something small and hot for yourself + little extra if anyone wants a taste.

A ball might come in handy as a warming and running around after tool .

I become a kid myself there ;) - go climbing over the trees etc - so be warned! LOL - it's my FUN time.

Oh that reminds me : nice comfortable trainers or walking shoes with warm socks - I might stay on and go for a long walk in Hampstead Heath which is kinda "natural" and foresty.

Just love the squirrels - a few UNSALTED peanuts might come in handy for them : squirrels are very picky (intelligent is a better word) won't accept salted peanuts!! There's lots of other animals too - peacocks, flamingoes, deer, australian short-long legged thingies (can't think of the name now) etc.

OOooooh and there's a duck pond : last time I went to my local park I was quite surprised how hungry the ducks were - don't suppose they get many visitors in the cold.

Wow! I am getting excited here!!!

It will be FUN - Just come prepared to let go and enjoy. I guarantee you all will sleep like LOGS when you get home.

Take care.

Jon, how much work is needed for the degree and are you at UNI or doing an OU. I am considering an OU in Psychology for Feb next year and was all set to do it but something has happened and I may need to wait a while longer before I can start.

Anyway, we can discuss it further on Saturday.

To make it easier for people to know it is ME they are meeting (of course Ken and Margaret know me from last time) I thought I'd wear a name tag in a prominent place. Only it won't have my name on it - but a photo of chicken and lamb and mince kebabs cooking on a barbeque grille - that's what LC is all about!

Just a quickie to say a BIG THANK YOU to Fiona for arranging another successful event. Golders Park is really beautiful, especially at this time of year with all the autumn colours. Hi Fiona

Yes you probably can't believe this but it's me. After alot of pressure Ken has persuaded me that I can do this. I am finding I have to be very patient. I think a phone call would be easier, but I have been told to persevere.

Anyway thank you very much for such a lovely time yesterday. It was great to see you again Fiona and to meet Bez and Jon.
After saying to you I am on a standstill with my weight loss I have to admit that I weighed myself today and although not alot I have managed to lose half a pound this week,(it was probably the walk yesterday)
Although we've had a lovely day today it was not a good day for our carb intake. Eating out and carbs don't mix. You should have seen the meal we ate at lunch time. Mind you we thought a bad day won't hurt we do deserve a treat every so often. we're back to carb counting tomorrow. As far as we know Nikki has arrived to lovely weather in Lanzarote.
We must meet again soon. Discussing carbs is a great way to keep you on the diet

Ken is a real character everyone and was taking pictures of us all with his new digital camera - Are these pictures any good Ken and can we have a look at them too?!..that's if the others don't mind.

Great day had by all and thanks Jon for keeping me company on part of the journey back.

Hi

Safely back in Whitley Bay. So good to meet you all at last.

Like the new pics Ken and Margaret. I'm assuming you found Baker St. Bez.

The play was AWFUL - left at the interval. It had 3 actors, no scenery etc and was about a young african with ?schizophrenia. Took stigma to new heights. I was alternately furious and upset. They seemed to think side-effects of strong psychiatric drugs (trembling and funny walk) were suitable for joking about. Not nice.

Had a nice lunch yesterday at an Italian - no pizza or pasta - had salad followed by chicken salad followed by coffee. Good journey back - v. full train - mainly "salt of the earth" drunken geordie football fans who fell in love with Helen.

Speak to you soon

Jon

What happened to the photo of the ducks and squirrel you took Ken? I'm sure some people (living in desertland) would be glad to see that albeit these are just fantastic. Love the smiles on everyone's faces.

Sorry about your evening Jon ... better luck next time.

Take care.

Hi Ken,

Those are wonderful, I bet all the others are thinking what a beautiful country we live in with all those colours - you must have taken your camera to work with you!

Thanks,

Hi Bez

Just to make you feel good, I'm not at work. My work roster means I've not been to work yet this week :D . I'm rostered Wednesday - Saturday this week so I was able to put the photos on-line with no problems.

Thought the camera was a bit too precious to take to work.

The picci's are stunning and make me want to go back and have another walk around the park!

OK Guys and Gals,

I was hoping someone would come up with an alternative Venue. However I thought the Golders Hill Park was pretty good for Exercise, Chat and Light-based focus on LC-Gathering.

Who can make it on Monday 10th December or Sunday 16th December ? ~ Golders Hill Park.

The following weekend (23rd December) is taking it too close to X-mas when I know most people will be hectically busy. 27th December is another possibility if anyone wants to burn off X-mas deviations.

Hope to see some committed LCers jumping in.

Hi Fiona,

I'm pretty well all booked up until Christmas with the girls and work and friends, those dates or any other would pretty much be impossible (Mon 10th is my B'day).

I'd love to meet another time but I just can't manage with the hectic schedule we have at the moment - I've only just said goodbye to a friend who was over from Australia which is why I haven't been round much this last week.

If you arrange something for the New Year then I will probably be able to make it - BIG SORRY!!

Hi Fiona,

I'm afraid that Margaret and I will not be able to make another meet before Christmas :( as life is sooooo hectic between now and then, but if I get my leave sorted out at work then we should be able to meet during the week between Christmas and the New Year  . I'll let you know as soon as the leave situation is sorted out at work. We will probably benefit from a good walk in the fresh air during that week.

I hope things are going well, take care

That's okay Bez, Ken. There must be a whole lot more UK LCers. My intention was to make it three for my first year of LCing and start the New Year with a fresh goal.

There's still time - after people have finished their Christmas meals ;)

Take care.

Hi all,

Just bouncing an idea off everybody - is Cambridge of any interest?

With my leg, I can't travel to London. But there is a fairly new member, Aine, who comes from Cambridge, which is just 35 miles away from me, a distance I can manage. And I have noticed one or two other new members with addresses in Lincolnshire, etc.

I'm not talking about meeting in the next 2 or 3 weeks. It would be more like 2 or 3 months, if anyone is interested.

Like I say, this is just mooting an idea to see if it is at all feasible.

Yes, I would be interested in a get together. London is a bit far out for me, but Cambridge sounds OK.

Hi Fine

I am in Lincs, so not far away from you. I think Andy mentioned organising a get together and I assume it is organised on line via the site - I don't know how you can actually email each other direct from this site - maybe someone will enlighten us.

Hi Cocoabear, Aine, Fine,

This is really the initial stage - seeing if there are enough local members to make a get-together possible.

Previous get-togethers have been in London, which I could not manage, and they have been organised by Fiona, who has not been able to visit the forum for a while. The way she has done it before is to canvass members for interest, then when there are enough who are keen and can make one location, she has worked out mutually convenient dates and times, and a date is fixed. In the early stages, this is done here on the forum. But details are worked out by e-mail. To do this, e-mail addresses are circulated to all agreeing parties. This is most easily done by private mail, but members with less than 25 posts do not have this facility.

This is an early stage yet. If we decide we'd like to go ahead, I will try and get hold of Fiona, who is still the UK Moderator. There will be members who are closer to London or other areas, who may want to organise other local meetings. This is certainly the thread to do it in, at least in the early stages. So, for Cambridge, we have a possible core of interested members, and a latest deadline of say late May, to correspond with Aine's return overseas.

Andy

Dear Andy
Thank you for that, I shall wait and see then for the next date......
I don't mind anyone emailing me privately - I think it is on my details (?) I shall check....

Hi Andy

Haven't been around much since the New Year (pressure of work :( ). Anyway, if the date decided is convenient Margaret and I may be able to get up to the Cambridge area for a meet. Also, if she wanted to come we would probably be able to bring Fiona with us (I've obviously not spoken to her yet but the offer is there). I'll wait and see what materialises nearer the time

Keep smiling :daze:

Sounds good. I am a member of another UK low carb site and get togethers tend to always be in London so it would be nice to be a bit further North.

Fi, you can try and email me direct, I am not sure how I set this up initially but I can't email direct as I haven't posted 25 posts yet, although I am a seasoned low carber - almost a year now!

This site seems quite complicated for a newbie - I am sure I will get the hang of it eventually!

Hi all,

Sounds encouraging, and very positive.

Ken, thanks, this is good news indeed, and a great offer.

Maybe it's time I tried e-mailing Fiona for a reaction in principle from her too.

Cocoabear, the private messaging system is different from your own e-mail system. If you post another 8 messages on the Forum, you will automatically get private messaging facilities of your own here. If not, I believe you can still send me a private message, by clicking on the tiny icon under this message that says "profile". This pulls up my profile for you. On that page is a line which says "Send Andy Davies a Private Message". Click on that, and you can send me a private message. In this you can let me know your e-mail address. Then I will e-mail you back with mine.

This method is used to protect members' e-mail addresses from the unwanted attentions of people who spend time scanning sites like this for any e-mail address they can find, so they can "Spam" members with a load of advertising materials, etc.

Will report back when I have contacted Fiona.

Great to see LC life carries on with or without me. Thanks Andy for your e-mail - it got me out of hibernation!

Aine as you are suggesting Cambridge how would you feel about looking for a suitable venue? Isn't Cambridge the city of the canals if my memory serves me right? I can see us having a great LC Gathering there.

Who else would be able to make it to Cambridge, shall we say in March?

{Ken: … if she wanted to come we would probably be able to bring Fiona with us } Thank you very much Ken. That is very kind of you. Yes I would like that very much. Perhaps I could take the tube to Watford to save you coming into the City and then back out again.

I hope you are both well. Need to pay a visit to your journals to catch up with all the news.

Take care.

Hi Fiona,

There is Aine, as well as fine. Both are interested in meeting in Cambridge.

My leg should be OK for a walk along canals - I walk with my children in the forest here at weekends (although I do tend to be a bit slow - sorry).

I need to use public transport, which may be better on Saturdays than Sundays, but I will check this out and let you know.

Will get back again when I know more.

Hope others will post up their needs, requirements and obstacles also.

{Andy: do tend to be a bit slow - sorry}

No need to be sorry. We could take it in turns to keep up with you - or perhaps jog around you!

Reminds me when I was younger and my mum used to be a mile behind me. I would go ahead, suss out the shop windows and then hop back and excitedly point her in the "right" direction - never did understand why she didn't get as excited as me!

Oh it is nice to be back!

Hi Fiona, Andy and all

March 9th looks OK for Margaret and myself,.

Quiery?? 16th March is a Saturday, do you mean 16th or Sunday 17th??
We can't make Sundays due to Youth Club, I'm also due to be rostered at work on Saturday 16th but should be able to either swop or take a days leave.

Fiona: We can arrange pick-up nearer the time. I'll put the June dates in my diary.

Hi all,

Sorry about this, but I can't make the two dates you offer - I should have realised yesterday that I had good reasons for saying several posts ago "2-3 months" and not "next month". Guess I was swept up in the excitement of it all. Apologies.

Oops! I went dancing yesterday. There was an opportunity for a whole day of dancing in the fresh country air with a visiting Leader and I signed up for it as I was being offered a lift as well.

I have only just realised that it is on Saturday 9th March. I am sorry for the confusion but Ken I'd rather go dancing on the 9th as this is a one-off window of opportunity.

Still if there are enough people willing to come to LC Get-Together there is every reason why you could still have it on the 9th March without me.

Take care.

I am shelving this thread and have started a new one so I would appreciate if anyone interested would respond to that.
