Does anybody know if it's ok to drink decaff coffee. Isn't it just the caffiene that we're trying to avoid, hence no coke.

It's the caffiene and citric acid in diet drinks that may cause problems. A lot of people keep on drinking coffee with no problem whatsoever. A Your Mileage May Vary type of thing.

Hi Gaz, read your note about coffee, did you find anymore out? I have drank nothing but water (and Vodka) for 3 weeks now. I have lost 14 lbs (obviously I ate too!) but I am so gagging for a coffee ...with milk. I was told by a colleague that caffeine slows down your metabolism - that's why you couldn't have it on this diet. Do you - or anyone else out there know if this is true, Atkins book did not explain why you can't drink it? Coming off the caffein was a nightmare, I suffered chronic headaches for 3 solid days, so bad I had to come home from work. i wouldn't wnt to do that again...

I had a real coffee habit at one time (junior doctor etc) but due to some enforced de-caffing (while i was in detox) i was down to only one cup per day - but it had about 3 TABLESPOONS Nescafe in a pint mug!! Was sure i could not function without it. So being a masochist i switched to green tea. Actually it's not been so bad. Some headache but not so bad. I also gave up diet lemonade (drank about 2l per day) because of the citric acid and I think that was worse.
Actually caffeine should speed up your metabolism (that's why its combined with ephedrine and aspirin in the "thermogenic" stack) but i would have thought the effect would be pretty small unless you took enough to make you rattle.
Anyway I'd recommend the green tea - nice and refreshing, no milk (so no lactose) and its got some good antioxidants and its supposed to help weight loss.
Cheers

Water is the best drink - no calories, no impurities, no hidden stuff. I have gradually given up everything else. I do drink Green Tea. It's great. Sometimes I have a cup of typhoo tea but mostly it is Green Tea and Water.

 Hi everyone, well I can say that I have not given up my coffee all the time i've been on atkins - i have it with double cream in it and it's always real coffee - from my machine - I drink on average 3 cups a day and it has never effected my wieght loss!
Oh and also - when I was on induction - I found that a coffee with cream and splender staved off the cravings for sweet stuff.

Polls reveal that most people on this board still drink coffee and lose weight. I gave up real coffee and switched to decaff for a month about a month ago. It didn't make any difference except I couldn't wake up in the mornings!
Milk is a no no. Try a splash of double cream or non sweetened soya milk instead.

I drink black decaf with no problems (soy in my decaf tea) and treat myself to a yummy normal latte at my favourite coffee shop between classes each Tuesday.
drink **litres** of water and the occasional diet coke (maybe 2 a week).
cheers maxa

Atkins does explain it... caffeine can (in his professional opinion) produce a blood sugar reaction, which is supposed to be the root of all problems.
On the other hand, an Atkins product does have a moderate amount of caffeine...it's called accel, and presumably it helps raise your metabolism, and possibly break a stall.

when i started atkins, i went totally decaf, I have drank black tea for quite some time after the smell of the milk turned my stomach.
I drink on average and on dont be shocked 8 pints of decaf tea a day
(easy when you mug holds 1 pint)
plus about 8 litres of water,
I was thirsty before this diet and am still thrirsty.
on the subject of coffee if you find that you dont like the bitter flavour when drinking black, you probably were a "milk in first" kinda person.
put a little cold water in before the hot .. and you dont scald the coffee.
got to go the water machine is beckoning.

You really drink eight litres of water...and a gallon of coffee. That's about three gallons of liquid. Why? Do you feel OK on it?

i feel great,
if i dont drink at least 1 litre every 2 hours i feel really dry..
i have asked the doctor about it. and she says as long as the throughput
is consistant she doesnt see a problem.
its been fun in the past when having to stay in hospital and asked for a sample and they give me the usual 600ml recycled paper bottles and i ask for another one before i start.
