Roy's Natural Market devotes one entire aisle to low-carbohydrate products and has others scattered throughout the store.
Highlights include a collection of Atkins products, from baking mixes to sauces (steak sauce, barbecue sauce, teriyaki sauce and Ketch-a-Tomato); Keto products, such as cereals, zero-carb Butta, baking mixes and shakes; an assortment of sweeteners such as stevia, xylitol and Splenda; soy pastas; Drew's All-Natural Dressings with zero carbs in flavors such as rosemary-balsamic, garlic-Italian and sesame-orange; Hood River Wine Bar olive tapenades; and La Nouba fruit spreads.
In its frozen-food section, Roy's carries all the LeCarb low-carb ice cream flavors, as well as OsoLo frozen muffins (banana, chocolate, peanut butter, vanilla and apple spice), low-carb frozen pizza, even low-carb New York-style cheesecake. Over at the café counter, there's also a low-carb soft-serve ice cream.
Roy's Natural Market, 130 Preston Royal Shopping Center (northeast corner), 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday (closed Saturday); 214-987-0213.
A low-carb gift
Once upon a time, foodies might have snickered about Bass Pro Shop's Jerky-of-the-Month Club. No more. Now it's a good gift idea for the carb-counters on your list — not to mention outdoors types, the traditional jerky fans.
For $99.95, the recipient gets a rotating selection of original, pepper, teriyaki, turkey and even buffalo jerky — 4 pounds, 6 ounces over the course of a year. The club starts in January. To order, call 1-800-227-7776.
What's new
• SuperTarget's Bread of Life Bakery has begun baking Carb-Lite. Made primarily with soy flour instead of wheat, the line features sliced bread, including cinnamon-raisin (4 grams of carbohydrate per slice), as well as dinner rolls, hamburger buns and hot dog buns. Prices range from $4 for the rolls to $6 for the buns.
• Whole Foods Markets has begun carrying organic Food for Life low-carb bread with 3 net grams per slice; soy flour and other ingredients stand in for wheat flour. It's $3.99 a loaf.
• If you happen to be dining out, Don Pablo's now offers low-carb, lettuce-wrap fajitas (chicken, sirloin or mahi-mahi) made with mushrooms, yellow squash, zucchini and asparagus.
• Smoothie King has added a low-carb, high-protein shake.
