Why, you must mean diarrhea!

Um, transient diarrhea happens sometimes at the beginning of Induction, as your body "detoxes" and rids itself of carb by-products, and swings into ketosis mode. Especially if you're used to eating a lot of white flour foods, like white bread, pasta, etc.... switching to a diet that's higher in meat protein and high-fiber vegetables will take a bit of adjusting. It may last about a week, then should settle down.

Do you take a fiber supplement? Like sugar-free Metamucil, which you can buy at any pharmacy, or plain psyllium husks, which you can buy at a health food store (much cheaper) ... it's a powder made from the psyllium seed ... you mix with water or other carb-free liquid and drink it down ... it turns into gel fairly quickly, so you don't want it to sit there for a long time ..

Most folks think of taking fiber and extra bulk for constipation, but this stuff is good for diarrhea too ... it helps "soak up" the extra water, and bulks things up a bit.

Make sure you're drinking plenty of water too, to replace what you're losing. Don't want to get dehydrated.

Hope this helps :)

Hi Doreen,

I been meaning to tell you I think you have a wonderful smile!! Anyways as a matter of fact, I DO have a full bottle of sugar free metamucil ( orange flavor ) I have never taken it yet. I bought it about 1 month ago when I was really constipated and starting to think I had irritibal bowel syndrome.. Infact I still think I have it. Sometimes going to the washroom can be sooo PAINFUL!! It's like giving birth ( i think? I dont have kids. lol ) Anyways since I take medications that can cause constipation I should be taking anyways,. Thanks for reminding me about it. I was just gonna take some now, but I read on the label not to take it within 2 hours of medication.. So since I just took some meds, I will have to drink some tommorrow afternoon sometime ..... Is it safe? It said on label that it may cause throat swelling? Or is that like a 1 in a million chance?

Off to bed for me!! I hope the scale god is good to me in the morning!!

Hugs,
Shannon

About the Metamucil or psyllium causing throat swelling ... it absorbs and holds onto water like a sponge... and swells just like a sponge too. As long as you mix it in a full glass of water and drink it while still liquid, there shouldn't be any problem. I highly recommend chasing it with more plain water too. Sticking in the throat is sometimes a problem with the elderly who just sip at it or they have difficulty and weakness with swallowing.

It's funny that you posted this at the same time as I was just finishing up my article Digestive Problems, which is now posted in our Tips column ... just click on the red menu bar at the top of the page. I mostly discussed constipation and diarrhea ... but I did include a brief mention of IBS, and there are some good links to information about bowel health and concerns. Do check it out . :)
