hello low carb community,
day 13 of induction, not entirely cheat free. i was wondering if anyone has noticed a loss of endurance or ability to say, run as far as you once were able to without getting tired. mostly, im noticing the muscles in my leg getting tired, which NEVER happened before atkins; usually its just loss of breathe that stops me. i used to run 2 miles, requiring only a walking break maybe 1 or two times, but today i swore i stopped like 6 or 7 times.
hypotheses of mine:

-burning fat for energy is more difficult than easy access to glycogen and so muscles tire more easily if unable to access easy energy sources

or (the cat is let out of the bag on this one)

- i cheated (oops) last night, fresh baked chcoclate chip cookies. i had three of them at 2am last night. however, this morning and this afternoon, the ketostix registered pink (small to moderate level of ketosis) so i am assuming i didnt totally jolt myself out of lipolysis. but perhpas my metabolism is confused and unable to deliver appropriate energy to necessary areas?

thanks guys, you are all great!

Chello Mossy. Ya man, I have lost a bunch of energy it seems. This is my 13th day and before I started this low carb way I was working out 3-4 times weekly; hiking, walking, treading, & the stepper. I have only been able to workout about twice so far. I just dont feel like moving a lot. Tired and weak. I have read all around in here and people say it gets better though. Perhaps after our bodies adjust. have you lost any weight? or inches? Other than energy how do you feel?
Keep up the good work and I hope to hear from you! :-)

hey there,
i dont know, i was feeling pretty good until today. im wondering
if those 3 chocolate chip cookies did me in.
my head aches like a mother ?!?! and i had the worst run ever....
from induction day 3 - 9 i lost like 1 or 0.5 pounds a day,
but ive just not been the best dieter, having gin, and tonic water,
and chocolate chip cookies...

how about you? have you lost any inches or weight? how much?
i dont have a measuring tape so i dont know about the inches...
i started at 154.5 and got to 146.5 on day 10, and am back to 148 yesterday....(day 12)...

hope youre doing even better!

Hey Mossy. Well I was too discouraged at first to weigh myself. I figured I weighed 212, hopefully less. So I will weigh myself again on the 14th day. So it will just have to be lower. te he. This is the highest I have ever been. I was working out for several months b4 i started this WOL (way of life) and I didnt see any results whatsoever. And I was hiking, swimming, treading all of that. So I am hoping this works. Joining this forum has really given me momentum too. People are losing weight all over. How tall are you? I am 5-7. I need to get some keto sticks tomorrow and a measuting tape so I can measure. Thats probably the best way, not scale. Its too realistic and depressing at this point to me. Hopefully on the 14th day I will feel better about hopping on there and smiling. I can't wait to make that choco choco mouse. woo hoo.

About feeling crappy, me too. I just dont have that much energy. Well it depends, some days i do; some i dont. Yet I am sure after I lose the weight I will feel more energetic as you will too.

Well I am glad to meet you. Did you start a journal? I have one. You should start one too. We can keep up with each other.

hey stella j,
i know they say the scale is not the best way,
but i find that checkin in and realizing that the numbers
are dropping works wonders as a means to keep motivated
and inspired. just losing .5 or 1 pound a day is exciting!
ketostix are also really great psychological motivator,
even if its not for motivaition, i think theyre fun to use
as a sort of "experiment" to watch how your body changes
in how it metabolizes food. for example, how it reacts when i cheat (god
im such a bad atkins dieter) and maybe alcohol
causes dif reactions that say cookies or veg.

keep on keepin on, its half a pound at a time. think about how much
fat is in half a pound! even that is a lot!

Are you taking potassium? Especially if you are exercising.
"Cheating" on Induction is particularly difficult for your body, since it has to switch back and forth. Let it pick a fuel source and stick with it.

I think the keto stix are great and fun too!!!! Sometimes I go overboard and do them twice a day!!! hehe. Just for fun though. It keeps me pumped.

Alcohol is my downfall too. I cheated over the weekend with michelob ultra lights. I did a stick today and says im still in deep ketosis!! i feel enthusiastic. I know that beer (still) not the best idea, yet; its the only time i have cheated.

I want you to stick this out so we can lose a bunch of weight and feel mos fabulous gurly! so lets try not to cheat and stick it out like champ!

We'll get there.

mossygirl, When I started induction I noticed alot of lower leg futige and had lots of foot craps. I added potassium as adkpam stated and it really helped. Also drink tons of water even more water if you are drinking alcohol. I now have more energy and feel better than I have for at least 10 years. My 15 year old step daughter and her jock(basketball and baseball) boyfreind cant keep up with me when shooting hoops. Too bad he can shoot better than me or I would waste him. I feel really good for my weight and I really wonder how I will feel when I lose another 50Lbs and quit smoking.
watch out world here I come.

Dr. Atkins doesn't recommend strenuous excercising during induction. It can take 2-3 weeks of uninterrupted low carbing for your body to completely adapt to using fat as a fuel source instead of sugar and yes, it's normal to not feel like exercising much or notice a drop in endurance until that happens.

my head aches like a mother ?!?! and i had the worst run ever....

Are you drinking enough water (at least 2 liters a day) and are you taking any type of potassium supplement as well as a calcium/magnesium supplement?
Depending on how big those cookies were, you could also be suffering from a sugar-induced headache. Just a few things to consider....

I know I'm eating a lot more sodium than I used to so you have to be religious about consuming water. Dehydration makes you feel sluggish, and tierd.. try upping your water intake?
