Hello there...

Do you all exercise like crazy to help with the weight loss?? Just curious to know...

My daughter tells me it's imperative that I exercise daily for at least an hour!!

Any feed back would be appreciated...

Thanks Nancye...

ideally you should do an hour of low intensity exercise, about 70% of your max heart rate. why? because if you exercise too hard, your body may start to breakdown muscle. so don't go too hard unless you are prepared to up your carbs.

Hi sambalam...

Thank you so much.

So all I need to do is just stick to the small amount of carbs i.e. green salads, olives, tofu, soy milk, avocados, nuts, seeds, cheeses, eggs and so forth i.e. meat but I don't eat meat but anyway what you are saying that if I push myself to the limits then I would need to add more carbs; like what for instance? if I'm to lose weight????

I think I understand what you are saying...

How do we measure our carbs because I do not know how. I'm just guessing at this stage.

Also should we be measuring or weighing our protien because I'm just guessing at that also???

I'm sort of following what I thought was right, i.e. high protein, low carb, candida type diet but along the lines of vegetarianism style...

Anymore input would be great as I am asking as many questions as I can to help me get started.

My daughter says I should have 1/2 a grapefruit before each meal as it breaks down the fatty tissue or something along those lines or if not the grapefruit then grapefruit juice itself, any input on that idea...

Black coffee! Can I drink black coffee; is that allowable???

Am I allowed cream, kraft cream cheese and all that kind of stuff...??

What I've picked up so far is that if I just ate protein by itself it would be better from a weight loss point of view??? The more I think about it the more I seem to confuse myself... LOL...

So much to learn...

Thank you again...

Bye for now...

I use www.fitday.com It's a free site where you can keep track of your carbs, calories, fat etc.
This thread Fitday.com How To's (http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38343&highlight=fitday) gives some hints on making it a bit easier to use.
It also tells you what percentage of your calories are coming from fat, protein and carbs. The ideal percentages for weight loss are 65 to 70% fat, 25 to 30% protein and 5% carbs.

Have you read Dr Atkins' New Diet Revolution? He makes it very clear that fat is vital. We actually use fat as fuel - that's how we go into ketosis.

Dr A also says about exercising, "Even a half hour of brisk walking four times a week will make a big difference, especially if you are almost completely inactive now." ;)

Cheers.

Hello Rosebud...

I'm sorry I didn't respond to your great advice yesterday but was not too well but back on track today...

I'm not of good health and that's one of the reasons why I asked the forum about exercise but still when I am okay and find the energy nothing gives me more pleasure than having a brisk walk and believe it I competed in the City to Surf on two occasions, jogging but those are days gone by...

I will follow your advice and I did have a look at the fitness site which I thought was great but just need to try and understand how to use it, I did try but it didn't make too much sense, a lot of mind befuddlement at times, I think they call it middle age senior moments...

I haven't read the Atkins Revolution book but I will see if the library has it in and if so will get it out and have a jolly good read. I did have the old one many, many moons ago but silly me lent it out to someone and the usual story, never got it back! We live and we learn, never lend unless you trust the person completely...

But I appreciate your help and any other help would be appreciated.

I live in Perth though my mother in-law lives just outside of Brisbane... I love Queensland such a beautiful part of the world as is Perth...

Take care and have a great day; "Come on the Brisbane Lions" Are you an avid follower of the AFL and if so I do hope the Brizzy Lions win today!!

Bye for now...

"Come on the Brisbane Lions"
Thank you! :P I'm not a major AFL fan, but like every other soul in Brissie, I want our boys to win!

Going back to exercise, have you ever thought of buying a pedometer? I bought mine for about $30 at Australian Geographic (of all places!) but sporting goods shops would sell them. They are little gadgets that clip onto your belt or waistband and measure the number of steps you take. I wear one because it's the only way my sad old body can get moving. ;) There have been various studies done proving that total exercise, ie how much you move all day long can be just as helpful as one long walk. The studies say to aim for 10,000 steps daily. I have only just managed a week of an average of 10,000. I, too, have various health issues that preclude a lot of exercise at times.
One of the members of our Pedometer Challenge - click the link in my signature for the thread - Pam, has heart problems and has been aiming for 5000 steps, but has recently been able to increase.
Just a thought.

All the best to you, Nancy. :bhug:

I must admit I really have never been an exerciser,,, thats why I was like 122kilo,,, now I am 104kilo,,,, I know thats still alot but so close to being under the 100 for the first time in 7 years!!
Now I walk 2 k a day to my letterbox 4 days a week (I am on a bit of a property) only takes me half an hour and some great hills too,,,,, the reason I am telling you this is never in my life have I been able to lose weight and keep it off,,,,and its all down to my half hour walk 4 times a week (that first half hour changed my life forever)
Now i enjoy my walks with the 3 dogs right behind me (might I add my overweight little doggy is now looking swell and thinner and does not need to be picked up for the walk home now,,lol)
All it takes is a little walk a few days a week,,, I wish I had started this a year ago,,,, but then it may not have sunk in then,,,,,it has now!!!

Hi jordy...

Thanks for input, feeling dejected as it's not working for me, think I'll go and eat worms!!

I've posted a message to Rosebud in the hope she might be able to tell me where I am going wrong and I will get that book most definitely...

My daughter is doing the Ms Kylie Minogue diet, with the grapefruit and I thought it was the same as the Atkins but anyway I've put weight on and I'm really upset...

I've walked for 1 hour 45 mins today and an hour yesterday but will probably suffer for it tomorrow, knowing what this old bod's like!!! Say no more!!

What do you eat in a day? Do you have a sample...

Thanks Nancye

Hi Nancy,

No grapefruit on Atkins! Did you remove the skin from the KFC? Because it would be very high in carbs. I suspect that the Kylie Minogue diet is not at all like Atkins. ;)
I would buy Dr Atkins' New Diet Revolution and start fresh. Low carbing is way too different from "normal" eating to try to do it without a "roadmap."

There is no need to worry about fat on Atkins. We need the fat, because that's our main source of fuel.

Don't worry too much about it though, just get the book, read it well and restart. :)

You are welcome to look at my menus in my journal. Just click on the journal link at the bottom of my posts.

All the best, matey. :bhug:

I eat the the amount of 30 grams of carbs a day (it can be different for everyone),,,I have the Dr Atkins new carbohydrate counter,,,, its has all the foods broken down into carb grams,,,costs around $12 for the book,,,its only small book too so good for your bag....even has take away foods in it... I started on counting 20 carb grams a day for the first 6 weeks then went up by 5 a week untill i stopped losing weight,,,,,I lose well on 30 a day.

for the first 6 weeks I did no fruit and counted and ate 20 carb grams,,, now I have small amounts of pineapple,, watermelon and berries (strawberrys, etc)

I do not eat anything low fat like butter, mayonaise, cream as they usually have alot more sugar added to them to make the low fat versions taste better.

let me tell you this,,, i was eating 20 fat grams in a day ok,,, well,,,, 2 tablespoons of fresh grape fruit has a total of almost 8 carb grams,,,thats just 2 tablespoons!! thats almost half my daily limit gone already. so the counter is great for telling you the net carbs in foods,,, (you only need to count the net carbs from this book as the fibre and that has been deducted for you)

SAMPLE:breakfast
I eat bacon and eggs for breakfast,,,or ham steaks with cheese grilled on them or omlettes with onion and tomato, mushrooms and cheese or strawberrie smoothie made on tofu.

lunch:
I make vegetable soups,,,chicken soups, beef soups (soups are great for all times of the day and easy to heat up in microwave) or cold meats and salad or tuna and mayonaise wrapped in a lettuce leaf (lettuce i use as bread for anything) or salads with great dressings or eggs and mayonaise mashed and wrapped in lettuce.

Dinner:
meats of anykind with steamed vegies i can have and a side salad or chicken kiev thats not crumbed (my butcher does it for me)or steak, eggs and salad or tacos but wrapped in lettuce leaf with salsa, cheese and tomato or stews or roasts with salad

snacks:
pork crackles (in a bag like chips) or real pork crackling of a left over roast or cold meats or strawberrys or salami or dips with pork crackles chips...... etc

and eating all this I have lost 18 kilo in 13 weeks,,,, you need to get the atkins book,,, I have all my friends reading it now and all on the diet after seeing my fantastic results.... and you can visit my journal by clicking journal in my post here..
wish you all the best,,get the book,,,it will all make sense when you understand how sugar gets stored as fat (and carbs are sugar),,,if you dont eat huge amounts of carbs (sugar) then you body goes to your fat stores and brings it back to use as energy (sugar) ...basically,,,eat too many carbs and it will store as fat for later use,,,eat few carbs and it will use your fat/carbs stored and burn fat,,,,,BUT yo need to exercise

Hope you understand that,,get the book and enjoy the light come on in your head,,,,and dont eat worms I did once and my mum smacked me,,LOL
