Should I be aware of protein bars. They say 35 carbs but only 3 impact carbs. What am I really counting here? All carbs or just impact carb?

My understanding is that non-impact carbs have no effect on blood sugar and do not stay in the body. Maltitol, glycerine, fiber of all forms are non-impact carbs, I believe.

You are eating low carb bars and not protein bars, right? I like the low carb bars, and have been eating them since week 1 and have lost weight. Most of the low carb products you will find will have this Net Carb breakdown. I think that is how we know what to count when we eat.

I have only been at this since July, so a more knowledgeable person is sure to chime in on this topic.

P.S. Start a Journal! I am interested in learning about the Schwarzbein Principal. I have never heard of it.

Talk to you later,
Lisa

Hi gtbay,

Yes, the "non-impact" carbs are sugar alcohols. They are alleged to not affect our insulin levels, but I have to warn you that for some folk they clearly do. You'll find that many folk here find that their weight loss stops or slows when they eat sugar alcohols. They can also have a nasty laxative effect. http://smilies.crowd9.com/otn/shocked/smilygifs436.gif

You can find more information on sugar alcohols if you go to Low Carb Tips on the orange menu bar at the top of the screen. :)

All the best.

Thanks for the input. What I like most about the Schwarzbein Principle is the explanations of why carb and low fat diets are bad for your body. I have made a life change for my entire family. I don't think of it as a diet at all. I was either eating or thinking about eating all the time. By cutting the carb I no longer have the cravings, infact, my stomach actually hurts now before I think about food. As Dr. Schwarzbein puts it, the "noise" in my head has gone away. I like the low carb bars because when I don't have time to pack a lunch, I can just grab a bar out of my desk and call it good. I felt like I was cheating using them. So far so good.
