Anyone on this diet taking Accutane for severe acne? I only speak english, but live in Germany. My dermatologist speaks english, but I think that sometimes we have a little trouble communicating. During my visit when she prescribed Accutane I told her I was doing Atkins and she didn't know what it was. I explained, but I don't know if it was understood. Well, I just went to a website to read about Accutane and it said not to change your diet dramatically while on the medicine. I think going on Atkins was a pretty big change and it said something about not eatting foods that will cause you to have alot of fat in your blood?? And finally, not to take a suppliment that has vitamin A in it. So, I'm wondering if anyone here was told not to take it and do this diet at the same time? If they were told it was ok to do both, has it effected your diet results in any way? Any info greatly appreciated. If nobody is sure I'll try to explain it to the Dr. again.

Hi mthrmayi2--
If you suspect there may be a communication problem with your doctor, I suggest you make up a copy of your weekly menu and show it to your doc. Chances are that she will understand that you are Low-Carbing, even if she's never heard of Atkins. My guess is that the medication you are taking is rich in vitamin A, and many supplements will boost your vitamin A intake to unacceptable levels. As for "fats in the blood", I'm not too sure what that means. Any weight loss over a short period of time will temporarily increase your Total Cholesterol (especially your LDL levels), as this is part of the process in the break-down of fat-cells. This usually takes less than 6 months to correct...and generally results in much lower LDL levels when the correction is complete.

For many Atkins gives people clearer skin. So it should be working in the same way as Accutane. Don't know about the vitamin A, but usually your triglycerides in the blood are lower on Atkins - this is a measure of fat in the blood, so my advice would be not to worry to much.
Since you have been on Atkins have you noticed any negative effects? You should be eating a lot more healthily now than you were before with all these veggies and so with improved diet your skin may improve as well.
Review where you are with Atkins and Accutane in real life and see if there are negative issues that you need to look at further.
