Even in 1843 this was already known:
it points out that Stanislaw Tanchou "....gave the first formula for predicting cancer risk. It was based on grain consumption and was found to accurately calculate cancer rates in major European cities. The more grain consumed, the greater the rate of cancer." Tanchou's paper was delivered to the Paris Medical Society in 1843. He also postulated that cancer would likewise never be found in hunter-gatherer populations. This began a search among the populations of hunter-gatherers known to missionary doctors and explorers. This search continued until WWII when the last wild humans were "civilized" in the Arctic and Australia. No cases of cancer were ever found within these populations, although after they adopted the diet of civilization, it became common.
This is truly amazing: We've known for more than 150 years that grains are killing us and what is it we're eating more and more: Grains and refined carbohydrates.

Just keep this[TANCHOU STUDY] in mind when you see all the rubbish that these so called dietitians dribble, they got us into this mess, now the people of the world have to get out of the mess themselves.
What would they want my family and myself to do, we no longer have diabetes, lupus candida, high blood pressure, all without as so much as a pill, potion or doctor.
[Therein lies the problem]
So we should pack it all in for the previous lifestyle, uummmmm no,sorry, we are going to continue eating like the natives did [ our ancestors].

Great find! There's also a low-carb reference somewhere (in Banting's story?) to a French paper or presentation in the 1790's, but these things are tough to track down.

However, let me be the first to refute Tanchou: "There are no long-term studies which support this conclusion!"

he also strongly and repeatedly urges that the "carbonaceous" elements of the average 19th-century diet (refined flour, sugar, and potatoes) be minimized.


We also have some references by Dr Samuel Hahnemann in the 1790's recommending avoiding sugar while undergoing homeopathic cures.

Thought this recent story was of interest.

In the laboratory, Shan simulated the digestive process, exposing gliadin to digestive enzymes in test tubes. She identified a protein fragment made up of 33 amino acids that was resistant to further digestion and whose structure was known to be toxic. Most proteins are broken down into small peptides of between two and six amino acids or into single amino acids. She then repeated her study in rats and again in test tubes using tissue taken by biopsy from patients undergoing unrelated medical procedures. “Even with prolonged treatment (exposure to intestinal enzymes), the peptide doesn’t lose the ability to induce the inflammatory response,” Shan said.
