 I posted this question earlier in my journal but now something really weird happened. My lower abdomen is huge! It looks like I am nine months pregnant. This kind of happens on and off, more on. When I was in high school I weighed 15 more lbs than I do now, and I was thin! Now I have a pot belly:( I thought I read somewhere about vinegar and dairy causing this but I am not sure! I have been using sugar free/carb free salad dressings like crazy, their main ingredient is VINEGAR! My doctor said that she cant explain it. There is nothing medically wrong. If it wasnt for my lower abdomen I would be proportionate. My measurements are 38-33-41. Mind you most of that 41 is fat on my stomach or at least it seems! Any suggestions? And I was wondering if anyone had the same problem. Three people in the last week asked me if I was pregnant:mad: I might not be as nice to the next person who asks!

Hi ChrstnHrpr,
Make sure you are drinking alot of water - even when you're not thirsty. The more you drink, the less you will retain, and give it a couple of days. Also, it might not be a bad idea to reduce the amount of cheese you're eating especially aged cheese, blue cheese..etc. The fermentation in these products may cause bloating.

I haven't experienced a pot belly as of late, mind you before this woe...I thought I had two bellies...
What I am experiencing is a loss of weight, but lots of blubber hanging around. I have even started wearing support undies, which I did way back when ...when I started gaining weight.
So, the pot belly of yours is making me wonder, is it really a pot belly, or are you separating...sort of speak...gee, don't that sound kinda weird? I say this, cause, prior to this woe, I felt my tummy went much further up (with the boobs) where as now, I see a tummy....and boobs...but flab kinda hanging in there....
Anyhoo, I didn't give this major thought until now...but Wendy knows she must start exercising. Shes just waiting until the cooler weather...although we are having some now..but me knows its only temporary :)
Hope this helps...otherwise, just ignore me....LOL

Thanks for the advice Wendy! I did buy a "girdle" but it just pushes everything up and now my "fat" hangs out over the side and it is definetly not comfortable. I have been doing a ton of situps since january and I can feel the muscles underneath the blubber. "Separating" kind of sounds gross. But I guess that is what is happening. How long does it take to "separate" before the fat starts to disappear. I lost another 3lbs this morning so down 6lbs this week. Hey, I am not complaining, just wondering what I did different! I keep losing inches in my waist not my lower belly where I need it:( Any suggestions? It seems like since I stopped going to the gym a week and a half ago, my weight loss resumed!

Tummy crunch's will probably help..but then look who's answering..LOL.....Any suggestions anyone on how to get the tummy flatter?
Not a girtle my dear, just support underwear...so that it don't kill ya..but gives a bit of support :)

Well, I've seen some of those panties at the store with tummy control panels, is that what I should get? Does it have some sort of medical benefit or is it just cosmetic so I look better? Honestly, they are not that comfortable but if it is going to help get a flatter stomach then I am all for it! Does it matter whether or not I get the firm or light control? Do you have a preference? Just asking before I go spending my paycheck on panties:D

No medical benefits at all. I find them comfortable and feel nice in them. Don't buy if not into it, just a suggestion :) (I like medium control).

I know exactly what you mean! And it has nothing to do with flab or muscle tone. No crunches could deal with this. It just appears some days. One day my tummy will be fairly flat. And the next day, I look pregnant. It is better now on Atkins, but still happens frequently enough to be annoying.
I think it may be an intestinal yeast overgrowth (Candida). I had some cream cheese yesterday, and I am so bloated today. I notice that cheese and dairy are the worst, but I never thought about the vinegar in the salad dressing! Vinegar encourages intestinal yeast overgrowth, too. I take caprylic acid and pau d'arco supplements to help with the candida. I guess the vinegar and cheese will have to go. I know I really need to do the candida diet, but the cheese is SO wonderful as a treat. I don't know if I can take it on meat and veggies alone!:(
Anyway, try cutting out the offending foods and see if it helps. You can get caprylic acid and pau d'arco at almost any health food store.
Good luck!

If you have candida overgrowth, you should NOT eat vinegar. It has a high amount of mold and bacteria. There are salad dressing recipes in some of the Candida cookbooks. Most of them call for various "cold pressed" oils mixed with lemon juice with. I have used olive oil and flax seed oil mixed with lemon juice. I do not know what cold pressed means, as I am relatively new to anti-candida cooking.
You should make enough for your salad and not store left over.

I get that all the time!! I just started this diet three days ago and can finally lift my head. My tummy would swell like that for days.. Zantac can help it but then again its not natural. I have thrush problems as well so I will see if this helps .. being off of caffeine and sugar and chocolate.. I used to have to stay away from pizza .. high yeast and high carbs

My stomach is wierd - it's bigger on the left hand side. It's been like this for ages!
Is that a sign of yeast infestation?
Is that similar to what you are talking about?

 Hey, I just found this thread. I have this BIG problem as well...as soon as I eat, doesn't seem to matter much what I eat. As soon as I start eating my stomach starts growing, before I barely get started and my pants get tight... I just hate it! I thought I was the only one...lol (not really) But here you all are, sounding like me!!! I'm going to have to look into this further :)
Thanks everyone

I have the same thing. I get bigger throughout the day so that by noon my pants are uncomfortable. I decided that the only way to help was to lose enough weight so that even if I got bloated my pants wouldn't be tight! :p
I know I do not drink enough water but I really have been trying. Also staying away from carbonated drinks. I think that helps some. I also have been aware of salt more so that isn't a contributing factor.
Anyone have any other ideas???? :q:

I have this problem too. It's really, really, really, really annoying and frustrating. I got tested for a yeast overgrowth, and it came up negative! I was convinced that I had a yeast overgrowth. The test did show that I had a lot of this 'bad bacteria' and very little of some 'good bacteria'. So, I've been taking stuff for it for about a month with no changes. It's really annoying. I know what makes my bloating worse is nutrasweet (diet soda, sugar free icecream, etc.) and also when I get heartburn.

Nutra sweet really bothers me. (spaciness, fatique headaches...)
I have been using splenda and my husband got me a electric ice cream maker so I can make sugar free ice cream! (not as good as the store bought but much better for me!)
Been huge today. Maybe I have alot of the bad bacteria...What do you take?

hi, just bringing up an old post here, it seems silly to start another when there is already one lurking about! My tummy today is huge, but it's not any of the things suggested here. I'm on a wheat, dairy and sugar free diet, so it's not cheese or vinegar or any of those things. I'm drinking plenty of water too. Any ideas guys?
Thanks.

I'm not sure where the thread about oil of oregano is, but I remember lots of
people on there saying it helped get rid of their yeast and also helped them
lose weight. It was a long thread. Probably a few pages back. Check it out! :)

Yes, I get this too and that is what has brought me to this web-site. I have lost all the weight I want on Atkins minus 10 lbs. and the 10lbs is all belly!!! Some days its flat, other days it gets to where I'm going minutes before me because it sticks out so much. I have fibromyalgia and wonder if it really isn't candida instead. I feel pretty good 90% of the time on the Low Carb. May try to cut out cheese and vinegar (my two favorite things!!)

Hi all, I have the lower pot belly thing and what seems to help some is
taking a magnesium supplement before bed, like magnesium oxide. The kind
that helps things along when one is constipated. I am not saying it isn't candida, but this helps also. ;)

I don't know if we are all talking about the same problem, but when I began losing weight, my tum looked terrible and hung there! I was horrified! So, I bought the extra firm tummy controller from Wal-mart and while it may not flatten me out...I don't feel so jiggly! :D It does pull me in some though. I have been so upset over my tum, because with all the weightloss you'd think I would have a better waistline...not! Well, I do, but my focus seems to be that tum! My husband keeps telling me it's fat and water and will eventually go away as I lose more weight...no amount of exercise will change it, only diet can...darn! So, I might have to go past my goal to get rid of it? Now, the skin? Don't have a clue...I do know that it has shrunken with my loses...does that make sense? So, I just have the skin holding onto the fat which shrinks with the fat... :agree: Will I ever have a flat tum? Don't really expect to, but compared to where I was...I can live happily with it, and if it's bad then someday maybe I can afford the surgery everyone talks about! But, considering the amount of weight I have lost, I don't really have a bad problem with my skin and am very lucky for that! Does anyone feel naked if they don't wear the darn tummy firmer???? Gosh, I do!

I've had the same problem for quite some time now. I don't know if we are on the same page but, in my case, I am perceiving a correlation between constipation and a slacking-off of doing abdominal exercises. In my case, I have a history of chronic and intense constipation (read "I am grateful for diahrrea when I get it"). And I have always noticed that the only time I feel halfway okay is when I have a successful "evacuation". The problem is that I am really irregular. Also, I have noticed that since I went back to school, I have been cutting back my ab exercises. I am wondering if doing crunches helped me out with my IBS?
Anyway, my two cents.

I have suffered for 7 months now with intestinal yeast overgrowth which 3 intestinal doctors have had me doing thousands of dollars worth of test and they still never figured it out . Medical doctors do not hjave a clue about yeast overgrowth. I have done all my own work and figured it out and got what I need through looking at web sights for yeast overgrowth. These doctors blew me off saying it is highly unlikly even though I had every sympton there was. I couldnt eat anything at all with white flour not even gravy, I would blow right up and even though I was on low carbs I have gained 8 pounds in the last 7 months. That is also a sign of yeast overgrowth I beg everyone to take a simple at home test. First thing in the morning get a glass of water and work up some saliva in your mouth spit it into the glass after 1 hour go back and look at it if it is all stingy or has particles floating in the water or it has fallen to the bottom of the glass. DO NOT GO TO A MEDICAL DOCTOR!!! Get on line and read everything you can about intestinal yeast overgrowth... Good Luck :agree:

Sounds more like gluten intolerance to me.

Sat, Mar-18-06, 19:35
My food intolerances do that to me. If I eat something that disagrees with me, I'm like the good year blimp. Cutting out grains and dairy (for me) solved a lot of the issue.

I have an allergy to Splenda that gives me a temporary potbelly. It lasts about 7-10 days and I look like I am 9 month's pregnant.
I have to resort to wearing elastic pants until my system returns to normal.
I know people on this forum use Spenda without hesitation but if you become irritable with a swollen belly you can test it buy elimiting Splenda from your diet for a few days and see if Splenda is the cause.
I read lables on everything and research what doesn't have a lable and I ask when there is homemade food.
I also have allergies to sustitude sweeteners that cause an instant blinding migraine but the Splenda has a much worse reaction and after a trip to the ER I now learned in my case it could become fatal if care is not given immediately.

Hi everyone. I am no expert but i have read that having an allergy to food or substances will cause your cells to swell up with water. If you are having an allergic reaction to food then the swelling up would make sense. An allergy could be anything from food to toxins from pesticides and chemical fertilisers.
Food for thought anyway.

For me it is a sign I've eaten a food I'm intolerant of. Either gluten or casein or nuts.

I went back to my 4th GI doctor intestional SPECIALEST so they call themselves. All I had asked for was a blood test to prove to all of them that I have yeasy overgrowth .. It is the 1 test she did not do. She wants me to have another colonoscopy and another test where you take a pill with a bunch of rings in it then have an exray every other day for 10 days because she said I screwed the last 1 up because I took laxatives. I told her I refuse to take that test again because the only releive I get is with laxatives. I am taking heavy doses of probiotics it hase 60 billion organisms per capsule. This is the only thing that has helpped keep it under control. I have still not eaten any pasta ,bread, cereal ,no sugar for 2 months can not lose 1 pound it is unbeleivable. I feel alot of fluid retention. This week I am going to set up an appointment with a good holistic doctor I was told about. maybe he will beleive me.

I've been suffering with a big bloated belly too, since i cut out sugars and yeast 5 days ago, but i have been eating creamed coconut and not sure if it's the caprylic acid thats in it creating a "die off" effect or the sugars that are in it feeding the candida. Seems to get worse as the day goes on.........

I feel for you!!! I would be mad too espescially with all your efforts!!! Unfortunately, I don't have answers - just empathy- the only thing I cna think of is maybe bloating from salt bc of many diet products. If that's true then I'm on the way there bc different diet sodas and desserts help me continue my efforts.......Good luck and share and answers, please.
