I have been trying to follow similar threads for awhile but it seems that most of the are not being updated anymore.
My name is Rosie and I am a stay at home mom. I am nursing a 4 month old and was wondering if there are any other moms who would like to start a discussion? I limit my carbs to <60 carbs for fear ketosis will affect my milk production, but I have read of other moms going much lower.
I am willing to discuss anything! I could talk to a tree sometimes, so it would definately be good to interact with other adults.

Hi Rosie,

My nursling is 26 months old and I have only been lc'ing since July. I'm not too sure how it effects milk. For me, it's not a big issue as she is not nursing for her sole source of nutrition.

Have you asked you docter about nursing and LC? I'd be curious to find out when he/she says. I just know you can't lc while pregnant, but I don't remember reading anything about it after and while nursing.

Welcome to this WOE. I wish I had discovered it back when my daughter was just little. I wouldn't still be struggling with my weight now...oh well. Live and learn I guess.

Hi Tami,
I haven't asked her Dr. and as long as she is gaining fine I am not going to worry. I have worried plenty already! I had trouble nursing her brother and I was determined to succeed this time. I am LCing due to other health concerns not just lose weight (for now). It was a matter of take meds, which effect BFing or LC. I have read that LCing mostly can effect the flavor and possibly the production, but so far have been okay. BTW I have read of many moms LCing while PG with good results. I am T2 diabetic and had to take insulin for the duration of the pregnancy with many hypoglycemic episodes. If I could have followed a modified LC diet (ie; no ketosis) maybe some of that could have been avoided. Regardless, I had a healthy baby for which I am grateful.
How man kids do you have? I have just the two, a four 1/2 year old boy and the baby.

Hi Rosie,

I just have the one child...she's all I can handle right now and I just seperated from my hubby so I doubt if I'll have a 2nd in the near future.

I have been told by many that lc'ing is good for T2 diabetic and I am glad that it is working for you.

Interesting that you know women who did lc while pregnant. I just remember reading in DANDR not to lc while pregnant. But I guess as long as there is no ketosis, it's safe. That's good to know, just in case I ever do have another baby...I sure want to someday. I guess I'll just have to see what the future holds.

Hi Rosie & Tami,

I currently nurse my 9 month old about 2-3x/day now. (Sometimes more) I started LC about one month ago. I too stayed at about 60 carbs/day with no loss of milk production. I had a few days in a row that I was around 30 and my daughter was fussy so I upped the carbs again. Weight loss started out fast for me but now has seems to slow dramatically. I heard it can. There is a link to the La Leche League somewhere that doesn't promote LCing but doesn't discourage it either. Have you read it? If not I'll try to find it for you.

Tami- I was in your situation 9 years ago. I had a 4 year old and a 6 month old when my husband and I separated and later divorced. Although it was tough at the time, I came through it well and now am remarried to a wonderful man. Actually, it was very liberating for me as I was in an unhealthy relationship. I really do think that after going through it gave me a new perspective of who I am and also made me appreciate my second marriage of 4 years now even more. I hope that you have lots of support from friends and family. I didn't and that still bothers me that my family copped out on me at the time I needed them most. If you want to "talk" I'll lend an "ear" so to speak. My PMs are working now so feel free.

Blessings to you both!

Hello gals,
I found the same thing,Teresa about going under 60g carb.
For any one interested I found a site (from some thread here) for support group for LC moms. It is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PregnantAtkids/.
I took my ds to his 1st day of preshool today. He didn't even notice I left! Three hours of relative peace.

Take care, Rosie

I don't know about anyone else.. but I have an almost 10 month old who nurses.. hmm.. maybe 4-5 times a day.. I'm under 20carbs a day easily, and he's eating food during the day (3 meals)... I make sure he eats carby foods at least 2 of those meals... he's still gaining (our little chubb-chubb) and he's not fussing to not nurse or to nurse.. he's just the same as he was before. He was crying this week.. but he also had a tooth come in (his first top one, *sigh*).

While I was pg I was told to go off LC (ARGH!) and even with eating LOTS of carbs, I still went into ketosis... dark... for the last 2 months of my pregnancy, the docs had no reason for it.. just "one of those things". SO.. I don't think it's detrimental (my baby is fine and bright and healthy) at all.. I think ANY time someone tells you what you should eat, they put that disclaimer on it, to save themselves from lawsuits in case something unforseen happens... but I SERIOUSLY doubt lc'ing would hurt your baby. If you are very concerned, maybe get some powdered formula and give your baby a bottle ONE time a day (it's pretty high in carbs), just to be sure.. keep the powder in the freezer and it'll last a lot longer. But I don't think it is necessary.. honestly!

When in doubt, pray.
Blessings!

Seems all I have read has been that ketosis affects the flavor of the milk and possibly the supply. As always the body will take what it needs for the baby first, so I doubt the milk is less nutritious.
