My experience with doctors is a good one. I have been at Scottish Slimmers, Weightwatchers and doing my own diets for years. I too have PCOS and have great difficulty losing weight. Around March this year my doc gave me Xenical to try and help me lose weight. After two months I lost 0 pounds and I was so disappointed, I really thought this was the miracle drug for me. After I went back to him, he suggested Dr Atkins diet, I was really shocked and surprised about his advice. But here I am. I have been doing this for just over a month now and have lost about 10 pounds, but these last few days I have gained a couple of pounds, even though I haven't been cheating. Apparently the PCOS is a big part of this. My doc once told me that I would have to work twice as hard as anybody without PCOS to lose just 1 pound and that appears to be the case with the Atkins diet as well. But I guess if I want to do it, I will just have to stick to it. By the way are you on any medication for the PCOS, I am on Metformin and it is supposed to help with the insulin resistance. Best of luck.

Glad to see you have had some success with Atkins. I do believe there is a PCOS forum around here. You might want to look around for it.
I wouldn't worry about the 2 pound gain-that might just be normal weight fluctuations, a crappy scale or PMS. I always gain 3 pounds right before TOM.

Joyce,
I'm pretty much in the same boat as you - PCOS, dieting for years, and now doing Atkins. I had an initial 5 lb loss but am fluctuating back and forth within those 5 lbs. Yes, it is difficult to lose weight. I did Weight Watchers successfully when I was younger, but all the weight came back, and as I've gotten older, I've been finding less and less success with WW. I would love to give advice as a PCOSer that has lost a lot of weight on Atkins, but I'm not quite there yet (crossing my fingers). Trying to stick it out. There is a PCOS forum within here, otherwise have you found soulcysters.net? That's pretty good too.
Good luck! Post if you find anything that works.

I have insulin resistance/PCOS and yes it's a lot harder to lose weight than when I did not have it. It takes me longer than others to get the weight off I find. I take Avandia, and if I don't take it I cannot lose weight, plus Yasmin pill which is suppose to help with the hormone issues. I'm losing steadily though and cannot complain. When I behave the weight comes off just at a slower pace sometimes. It's not impossible last winter I lost 23 lbs in a month. Make sure your fat is high enough, when my fat was low or I was getting more protein than fat I gained weight. I now keep it at least 70% fat. Good luck!
