Has anyone seen the article in the Daily Express re Atkins today. I've only glanced through it at lunchtime so I'm afraid that I haven't had a chance to read it properly but the just is that a 16 year old girl has apparently died after cutting out her carbs for 2 weeks on the Atkins induction period. I think they were saying that the diet affected her heart so much that it basically gave up.

Obviously this is a huge tragedy for the girl's family and friends but I was wondering if anyone has more info on how the low carb diet can affect you in this way.

I've been on Atkins for a while now and definitely feel the benefits - not just the weight loss but I generally feel better and more healthy. I'm at the stage now where I've added more carbs to my diet and I do feel that this is a woe for life as opposed to Weight watchers / slim fast etc where, I feel, that no one could realistically continue for any huge length of time.

I have read DANDR, the previous version of the book and I have the Diet for Life book at home waiting to be read. On top of this I feel that I have done a fair amount of research into the diet but, I must admit I have very little medical knowledge or the ability to really understand the affect that such a change in diet could have on the body.

Can I ask how others feel when they read these articles - part of me wonders whether it is just all part of the "bad press" that Atkins has been receiving recently and that I should just listen to my own body and what it is telling me. But on the other hand I can't help feeling worried that maybe we don't really know the long term effects.

I'd be really grateful for any of your views on this.

Thanks

hi wyecat,i haven,t read the article yet and went to their site but its not available to read online.i,ll have to read it later when hubby brings it in from work.
there was something mentioned about this on the telly yesterday morning along with someone dying of kidney failure that they attributed to the atkins diet.
as for the long term effects, some of us are taking part in a 5 year study on l-c diets and don,t forget, atkins followed his own diet along many other authors who also writes about low carb.
i,ll get back to you when i,ve read the article.
as this is supposed to have happened in usa,i,m sure someone from there will be able to put your mind at rest.

heart faliure on Atkins due to lack of carbs??
This sounds to me this girl had a serious eating disorder before Atkins, You often hear of teenagers with bulmia who havent kept food down for so long and constantly abused their bodies with laxitives, that there body can take no more and there hearts pack in!! I may be wrong but I am sorry there must have already been an underlying problem for this to occur, people can go ages without food, as long as they have fluids, so how can 2 weeks of low carbing kill you?????
