Has anyone seen the article in the Daily Express re Atkins today. I've only glanced through it at lunchtime so I'm afraid that I haven't had a chance to read it properly but the just is that a 16 year old girl has apparently died after cutting out her carbs for 2 weeks on the Atkins induction period. I think they were saying that the diet affected her heart so much that it basically gave up.
Obviously this is a huge tragedy for the girl's family and friends but I was wondering if anyone has more info on how the low carb diet can affect you in this way.
I've been on Atkins for a while now and definitely feel the benefits - not just the weight loss but I generally feel better and more healthy. I'm at the stage now where I've added more carbs to my diet and I do feel that this is a woe for life as opposed to Weight watchers / slim fast etc where, I feel, that no one could realistically continue for any huge length of time.
I have read DANDR, the previous version of the book and I have the Diet for Life book at home waiting to be read. On top of this I feel that I have done a fair amount of research into the diet but, I must admit I have very little medical knowledge or the ability to really understand the affect that such a change in diet could have on the body.
Can I ask how others feel when they read these articles - part of me wonders whether it is just all part of the "bad press" that Atkins has been receiving recently and that I should just listen to my own body and what it is telling me. But on the other hand I can't help feeling worried that maybe we don't really know the long term effects.
I'd be really grateful for any of your views on this.
Thanks
