The reason I am asking this is I want to hit supermarkets with figures telling them just from a small poll, on a low carb web site there are X amount of people who would buy l-carb products from their store, and thats not including the others of thousands who do l-carb, and who are looking to low carb. I want supermarkets to take us seriously and may even try to get a petition going that can be signed via the internet (not quite sure how to do it as yet but hopefully will find out soon!!) (Kelly UK thats your Q!!!)

Hope I have listed them all if not just mark other and tell me where you buy your shopping via a reply

I thought about one of those web petitions for stevia, like someone has for liquid splenda, haven't got a clue how though lol

I clicked sainsbury's but i am a very fussy shopper and go to different stores for different things. I suppose i go to sainsbury's the most as this is where i get my fruit and veg from but i also visit regulary Asda and as my kids call it scumafield.

Though if any supermarket stocked LC products i would travel there! Just wouldn't get frozen food lol

I mainly shop at Waitrose because there's one very close to my house, and also this Waitrose happens to have better produce than the other local supermarkets. Next would be Sainsbury's, because we get their Bulgarian Cabernet Sauvignon in the box. It's decent and cheap, and when I'm there for wine I usually buy some food too.

We travel a lot and do end up buying food at most of the UK chains over a six-month period. But I would have to say that Waitrose is our "home" shop.

The problem with these polls is that you can only click on one box.

I mostly shop a Lidl for the cheap meat and veggies and l;ow carb sausages. I also go to Safeways once a week and the local coop quite often. I would go to Tesco and Morrisons but there isn't one near me.

That's good Pepsi!! I wish I'd been there!

I ticked Morrisons cos that's where I go most of the time. I live 5 mins away from Safeway but can't really afford to go there...or sainsburys...sob!

I usually use Asda if I can be bothered to make the trip...ooh I'm just sooooo lazy! LOL

Asda is great on things like that, thats why i like to shop there.
Any other supermarket and they would have refused sales.

When i go through the till at Asda and for some reason there is no bar code or it isn't working they just give it for free. Not like last week in Sainsbutry's where i had to wait 10 minutes for someone to find out the price of an item, the people in the queue behind me weren't happy either and i was getting the feeling i was about to be lynched.

I'm a Sainsbury's girl! No Morrisons or Asda around here. Ocassionally go in Safeway, but rarely anywhere else.

As I'm heading up north on Wednesday to Lancaster I know my friend will mainly shop in Asda and Morrisons

suleika
Sun, Aug-17-03, 13:36
Waitrose is nearest to us, and their fresh stuff is good. Plus they do this cool thing called Quick Check, where you scan your own items and get to pay for it without waiting in a queue. I don't *think* we've had any freebies from it; we try hard not to forget to scan everything.

Gez

lburnikell
Sun, Aug-17-03, 14:46
safeway used to have that shop and go it was called but sometimes you had to be re-scanned it was a right pain in the butt!! I think they did away with it because too many people where pinchin stuff!!

suleika
Sun, Aug-17-03, 15:42
I think at Waitrose when you first try out the self-scanning, you get two or three "random" checks within the first few weeks. Then if you haven't nicked anything you don't get checked again for ages. I suppose for people who nicked things they might have "given them the benefit of the doubt" the first or even second time but made sure to increase the frequency of "random" checks. That's my guess anyway.

There was an incedent when shopping with my mother when she was buying a hair dye i thoiugh she had scanned it and vice versa, when we got home and chqed the reciept for our goods we had not been charged!! Now that was done in inoscence, I wonder what would have happended if we had been rescanned??? locked up and thrown away!!?

I use Tesco for my main weekly "big" shop, but pop into Iceland (round the corner from where I live, open until 2200) during the week as necessary for the odd item. Iceland also do a nice selection of hard cheese at 3 packets for £2 :)

Unfortunately we don't have either Asda or Morrissons round here, or I'd be there like a shot :) There is a Lidl within a reasonable distance, but it is very much "take your chance and spend the afternoon" given the lack of trolleys and enormous queues at the check-out :( I gird myself up to go there once in a blue moon to stock up on tins of salmon and mackrel, plus various excellent frozen meats.

Nowhere have I found any specifically low-carb products :( Although I would like to congratulate Superdrug on selling Splenda at 20p cheaper than Tesco ;)

Tesco for the weekly shop.
I also pick up nicer hams, veg etc. from M&S, don't think much of Tesco fruit and Veg.
We have a new Asda being built, due to open in December. I will definitely be going there.

I shop in the Co-op midweek but do a 'main shop' in Tescos. I'm quite proud of myself because I persuaded my Co-op to change the brand of ricotta they stock to the one I like, and to make sure they stock it regularly (I take 4 pots of it a week as I make my hot 'breakfast porridge' with it - I think I am their main customer for this product!).

I go out of my way to Sainsbury's though to stock up on soya milk (because I like theirs better than other supermarkets') and also for 24g carb chocolate (I must try and persuade my local Tescos to stock this)

Out of interest, with milk and sugar off the list, how does dark chocolate manage to slip through the net?

Lindt and Green & Black's both do really nice dark chocolate if that's any help. Green & Black's especially is in most supermarkets nowadays in the organic section. Hmm... I wonder if their Maya Gold is allowed... :yum:

I do our main shop in Tesco (I exchange the clubcard points for Air Miles) but we buy most of our meat at Costco. I also get some things at M & S and in the deli at Fenwicks (a large department store in Newcastle).

I did fill out a customer comment card at Tesco a few days ago, asking when they ere going to start and stock more low carb/sugar free products, but I haven't had a reply as yet.

Somerfield is the only one local to me, but when we've got a couple of hours free we go to a really cheap independant supermarket in the main town, I can get 2-4 times more for the same money, but they don't always stock the same things and they have this terrible habit of selling really nice wine off very cheap.....

Ah right... thanks for that Christine. It'd be way too high for me too...

That said, at the moment I'm having trouble managing even a small tomato or some lettuce, so anything with carbs seems too high for me! :(

Still, given the amount of salad and vegetables I used to eat before going on the diet, at least I can safely assume I know what caused the larger part of the ME now!

i am going through a faze opf craving really sweet thing (but I have come on!!) I am scared if I eat the chocolate I wont stop, but thats my problem we are all different and have ways of controlling what we eat!! So a little of what you fancy in moderation cant hurt!!
I like this forum as it is here for help and advise and support, because we all dont know all of the answers, but together we get there!!!
Ive been on this diet 45 days now and know so much more from day one but god I still have so much to learn!!
Christine I am gonna try thsat chocolate cause i hate dark chocolate so I might be able to control the sweet cravings with a square and think yuk I dont want any more for now. lol

UrbanGypsy
Fri, Aug-22-03, 09:19
Of course, you could always melt the chocolate down in a bain marie with some cream and egg yolk to make a kind of chocolate mousse type thing...

I used to adore dark chocolate, but it really gives me a headache now. And, like you, have a real problem with that "just one square" concept; somehow it never quite happens that way with me!

Still, at the moment absolutely any carbohydrate seems to be making me feel really ill, so I'm mercifully light on the cravings front for now! I actually felt sick whilst my fiance was dithering over which cake looked nicest in the shop the other day... Never thought that day would come!

I made it as far as the health food shop!! Got me sugar free lollies and something called a 'Silhouette' bar. No added sugar, no wheat, no dairy, no gluten and no caffeine. It looks very much like a bar of chocolate and it's 50g. Nutrition info per 100g, Energy 2458kj 599.6cal, protein 13.3g, carb 17.97g, fat 44.3g
It's a Carob bar something i have never tried before. One slight problem is that i HATE trying new things coz i scared they are gonna taste fowl, so at the moment it is untouched in the fridge.
While i pluck up the courage to try it has anyone here ever tried carob bar? I would really like your thoughts on it, at the moment i think it will be yuck because it just sounds too good to be true. :agree:

Don't expect chocolate, mind you... it isn't chocolate. But it is a really tasty alternative. :)

(As an aside, that's the pancake and the muffin recipes all done... do I get a - carb free - cookie now?! :D)

UrbanGypsy
Fri, Aug-22-03, 14:02
PS... Only thing which makes me slightly suspicious is I'm fairly sure they always add sugar to carob. The bar itself might have no added sugar... doesn't mean the carob didn't have sugar in to start with. Might be worth checking?

I found out the hard way bought guacamole doesn't list sugar... just the tomatoes they added sugar to before starting. Thankfully its pitifully easy to make your own, so it didn't cause too bad a crisis!

Ebbie.B
Fri, Aug-22-03, 14:34
I didn't think 9g carb for the whole bar was too bad, plus i don't plan to eat it all in one go, still too chicken to try it lol.

It does say on the packet it may look like chocolate but has it's own distinctive and delightful flavour, so i am prepared for it not to taste like choccy.

All it says about the sugar is 'no added sugar', but of course that does not mean it hasn't got any sugar in it. Ingredients list Hydrogenated vegetable oil (ewwww), carob powder, soya flour, emulsifier (Lecithin E322), flavouring (natural vanilla). And again on the discription says 'has the natural sweetness of carob'

Though i must admit since induction i haven't really looked at ingredients of food (apart from for wheat flour), i have just been counting the carbs. Oops now that doesn't sound like such a good LC now does it

pepsi max
Fri, Aug-22-03, 14:47
didn,t realise it was only 9gs for the whole bar.i read it wrong.sorry,my puter screen very jerky tonight.i,ll watch out for them.i,m a bit sceptical with some bars, tried a one that said 3gs for the whole bar and it shot my bgs up like a rocket after only having 1/4.hidden at the back,i found it said 30c-gs,3 effective cgs.i reacted to the total amount.

Sorry Christine i forgot to answer your question on the SF lollies.
I get them from my local health food shop they are called Simpkins sugar free pops.
Now they have no nutrition info on the lollies and i can't remember what was printed on the box but they do conatin sugar alcohols.
And have a nice little warning on them 'not suitable for children under 3 years of age. May have a slight laxative effect, best eat one lolly a day'.

Hi Ebbie

The choc I get in Sainsbury's is called Sainsbury's Luxury Continental Belgian Dark Chocolate, usually in the baking ingredients aisle - by the glace cherries etc. I like it better than others I've occasionally come across.

I don't go for the 85% ones because, so far, I've never seen one that gives the carb count, and just because there's more cocoa in it I'm not convinced it's any less than 24g. Could be wrong though!

Jackie

Sat, Aug-23-03, 16:37
i think the carb count is 19gs per 100 gs.there was a thread here about it.it is annoying when the grams isn,t given.it put me off that chocolate for ages till i saw the thread.

Ebbie.B
Sat, Aug-23-03, 16:45
I didn't think to look at the cooking chocolate Jackie, funny coz i've near enough read everything else sweet.
In my local Sainsurys they have 2 types of high coco chocolate, Lindt (however you spell it) which doesn't show the carb count and Green and BLack's which does.

I'm a bit peed off with Sainsbury's, they still haven't sent any sort of reply to my email not even a confirmation.

pepsi max
Sat, Aug-23-03, 16:51
its the lindt that is the 85% cocoa solids. (19gs). green and blacks c-count is a bit high.there again,if your only having a square at a time its not too bad.the bar of the lindt lasts me ages.(unless somebody nicks it)

SlimJackie
Sat, Aug-23-03, 17:02
That's useful to know. I'll probably get some and use it for 'cooking' - then I can add some liquid sweetener to it - otherwise I reckon it'll be just a tad too unsweet for my taste ... but it'll be worth it to save a few carbs.

It's weird thinking back to 'before Atkins', when I'd kill for Cadbury's milk choc - now I actually don't like it - it tastes too sweet and sugary. It's interesting just how much I've lost my sweet tooth since starting low carbing. I don't think it happened overnight though - I didn't even have a small taste of sugary things like 'normal' chocolate or cakes, biscuits etc until I'd been on Atkins for about a year.

its the best way though to keep your diet as natural as possibe.in a way we,re lucky that a lot of these products aren,t here as they,re too tempting.the only things i keep ordering is the no carb choccy sauce and atkins tom sauce.a bottle lasts ages as nobody dare touch it or i,ll chop there hands off.the choccy sauce is to die for.

I know what you mean. I'm just about staying away from the sweetener aisle as it is, i'm not sure if i could still hold out with atkins products here.
I was allowing myself a little honey in some greek yogurt (still within my carb allowance) as an ocaasional treat but with all this talk of CHOCOLATE thats not hitting the spot anymore!!

i use the greek yoghurt (total)its got the lowest carb count that i can find.like a tablespoonful with my berries and s/f jelly.

I haven't tried that one. I love Rachels, i can't remember what the carb count is though. When i'm very naughty i also put on some chopped macadamias. Though i'm not going over my carb count it is cutting into my vegies, oops!

pepsi max
Sun, Aug-24-03, 10:00
leeks are 1.2 carbs per 45gs of leeks.you,ll have to weigh them to see what 45gs look like.i don,t really like them that much.

lburnikell
Sun, Aug-24-03, 10:06

Baked leeks are really nice too. I cut them up in to roughly 1" pieces and bake them till cooked... then cover them with grated cheese, black pepper and cream and bake a while longer till the cheese and cream have melted in together and gone all bubbly... :yum:

Went through to Eastbourne and H&B was bloody shut!!! and all the specialist shops i went into had loads of stuff like rice flour but no Soya flour. And i had to tear myself away from a bottle of sweet chilli dipping sauce :cry:oh it did break my heart lol

Made up for it 10 minutes later when i was FORCED, yes thats right FORCED to buy and eat a diabetic choc fudge bar from Thortons. Oh it was total Heaven

Anyone know any supermarkets that sell Soy flour?

I emailed Tesco yesterday about whether they were planning on stocking more low carb foods and what their policy is. I also complained that I had put this question on a customer comment card and requested a written reply within 7 days, and no-one had contacted me!

It will be interesting to see what I get back. I'll keep you posted.

This was my reply from Tesco's. I emailed them again putting them straight but i never got a reply to that one!

Thank you for contacting us with your request for us to stock low
carbohydrate products.

Because it is our Buying Teams who decide what we sell in our stores, I
have
passed a copy of your letter to their department. I cannot guarantee
anything, but I can assure you the matter will be given consideration.

At Tesco, we are concerned that there has not been enough research into
the
long
term effects of being on the Atkins diet. The diet is not very old as
it was
only
launched in early 90's

There has been good & bad press about Atkins so there are various pro's
&
con's. We are looking at possibly stocking the Atkins branded products
soon.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to contact us.

Kind Regards

I have had an acknowledgement, but no formal reply as yet. However, after seeing Ebbie's reply, I guess I'll get something along the same lines!

However, if we all email them separately, they might take notice!!
