Thanks for the reply Nat. I just am feeling VERY frustrated!!!!! I have been on this WOL/WOE for nearly a month now and I keep going up and down with the same pounds!!!!! In the first week I lost 6.6 pounds! Great I know but then the end of induction I was back up 3 of those pounds. SO I figured water weight, etc. about to get TOM. Then the next week I was back down 1.4 pounds.....and this week I am back up 1.8 pounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO you can see I am about to lose my mind!!!! I am not looking for any tremendous weight loss every week but even a half pound would be an indication that I am on the right path!!!!! I run a lot but have for the past 4 months. (about 20 to 25 miles a week; which BTW saw not weight loss from that!) and now I want to get back into the weight workout. I am sorry to ramble but I feel REALLY frustrated!!! ANy advice????

First, you're normal :) Weight fluctuates. It's effected by what you eat, what you drink and what you don't eat and drink. Other contributing factors: hormones, exercise, activity, weather, medications. When I started out LCing and I weighed in excess of 240something lbs I could be 8-9 lbs heavier by the end of the day. This number has decreased over the years - less fat in the fat cells to play around with. It's perfectly normal and to be expected. It might surprise you but when you gained the weight it didn't happen in a straight upward curve either.

I read through your journal and two things come to mind. One, for the amount of activity you're doing you may not be eating enough for your body to let go of fat and water. You made the comment on August 10 about having your calories at 1600 and I think that's a minimum to strive for when you run as much as you do. Also, if you're lifting weights your meals need to contain a little more protein - especially the morning ones when you're breaking fast. One egg and two egg whites is very little calories / protein / most importantly, fat. I think you were doing better with the meals / calories at the outset  When you were noticing more losses.

I also saw you list your measurements. If you're going to stay with the resistance workouts you should use these as your main reference point. In a world where I had to choose between shrinking vs. a lower scale number I know which one I'd pick, no hesitation.

No weight loss while engaging in a lot of running is usually a sign you're stressing your body. Cardio is good for creating a caloric deficit, but too much cardio is counter productive. It causes elevated cortisol levels and muscle catabolism. You might try taking a break from the running for a week - see what happens. If you lose some of the water weight you know you were overdoing it. Four months, btw, is a good time for a break to avoid overtraining.

Nat, I can't thank you enough for replying and for looking over my journals. I do feel like this is the way for me, so I really think I will have to stick with it. I think you are right about the running I am going to take that week off and see what it does. Do you think I should just stick with the resistance training or take 1 week off of everthing? I did notice as well that my calories were higher in the beginning; but I started to think that they were too high! I do work out a lot not to mention the walking that I can accumulate in one day living in NYC. Probably around 3 miles in addition to my workouts! Thanks for all of the advice, I was truly desperate. Thanks in advance for your replu on the week off of working out. -SHannon

Do you think I should just stick with the resistance training or take 1 week off of everthing? Shannon, for some reason your fitday link didn't work for me from work, looking over your journal now I think taking a week off is a good idea. Have you ever looked at the webpage that pops up when you click on that link? Down at the very bottom you see the table and pie charts for Calories Eaten and Calories Burned. Your calories are typically around 1500 for the day - you'd normally think for a 147 lb woman that is right on track. Then you take a look at the calories burned - around 3200 consistently, for a deficit of 1700 calories. Doing the math, in a perfect world you'd be losing 3.5 lbs a week.

The reality of the situation is a deficit between what we take in and what we expend in excess of 1000 calories a day puts enormous stress on the body. A stressed body doesn't like to burn fat.

I have a feeling that if you take a break from working out and don't change caloric levels much you'll notice a drop in the next few days. But, if you keep calories at this level and go back to all that activity you'll see the same thing happen again. When you increase activity you have to also increase fuel, or the engine won't run.

You could also increase those carbs. You're usually hitting around 15 and that's before you deduct fiber! More veggies - green is your friend :)

Again Nat, thank you so much for taking the time to look over my fitday, and journals. Very generous of you. I will definetley take the next week off. It is strange that you mention the calories burned in/out graph on Fitday because I was thinking the same thing! I thought, "how in the world haven't I lost more weight!!!???" Well let's see. I give you a post next week and let you know! Thanks again, for taking the time to answer! -Shannon :)
