Does anyone know where I can buy the Bernstein book? I've only seen it on the net so far.

I am on the Atkins diet but my mam is diabetic and they won't hear of her atempting Atkins in her clinic. She's devestated. She's 5 stone over weight and desperately wants to lose it as well as sort out her diabetes.
I heard about Dr Bernstein from a lovely lady on here but she was from USA. Does anyone from north UK know where I can find it so I can go to mams diabetic clinic and ram it in front of their smug little faces? Sorry, I'm just really annoyed that they are playing with my mam's life like this. Isn't it up to her what she does with it? She has tried every low fat diet in the book for 27 years (never lost the prenancy fat) and just put more and more weight on. She's miserable and needs some hope. I think Dr Bernstein can truely help.

I bought mine from Amazon.co.uk too. You can buy a new copy there for £6.50 plus P&P...

Likewise, I bought it for my mother whose life they're risking. You have my every sympathy.

Have a look too at the as you'll see from the Revised Carbs in Booze posting (which went somewhat off topic! ;)) for some more helpful info from Christine.

Thank you both again! I saw that you could read it on line but I really want to take it to the clinc with my mam and show them cos they just want to slate Atkins there but with Bernstein being a diabetic himself, it's more proof. I will order from Amazon now. Thank you both!!

I suggest your mam follow Atkins but NOT tell the clinic. I know that's what I'd do. They don't have the right to tell her what to eat, neither do they have the right to upset her so much! You'd think they'd be pleased she wants to do something to help herself. Makes me mad, I tell you.

I know what you mean Lisa but my mam can't do Atkins without telling the clinic cos she has to take a shot of insulin everyday and that has to monitored.

If she just went ahead on her own it could be very dangerous for her.

I feel terrible for her but I'm going to go with her to her appointment in Sept and arm myself with Bernstein's book.

The worse thing is, one of the nurses at her doctors surgery (not the clinic) is diabetic and following Atkins. It's totally unfair.

Oh good grief. Your poor Mam. No wonder she's so upset!

Definitely go with her next time and maybe they won't push her around so much.

Hey, talk to the diabetic nurse and get HER views too. You never know - every little helps.

A friend of mine is a type 1 diabetic and has been having insulin shots for most of her life. Since I have been on Atkins she has altered her way of life to good effect. Firstly she added more protein and slightly less carbs and found she did not get as hungry and more recently has been eating fairly low carb and has found it helps keep her insulin levels a lot more stable so she does not need to inject herself so much.

Whatever course your Mum goes on she will need to keep a close eye on her blood sugar levels. There are so many on this board who have Type 2 diabetes who now control this with their food, rather than insulin tablets.

Even if she does not want to go full on low carb, just encourage her to lower her carb intake and increase her protein intake a bit and see how she feels. Always monitor blood glucose however.

Thanks everyone. I'm glad your friend is feeling healthier Annie. I will give my mam the advice you have all give me and see how she goes. I think she is really scared to go it alone, without the clinic behind her though, incase she endangers herself. She has only been a diabetic for 3 years so she's worried to do anything wrong. The doctors have told her to have carbs with every meal so that's how she's now "programmed". I'll let you know what happens when I go with her in Sept. Hope fully, to kick ass!! lol

She CAN have carbs with every meal! She can have her veggies and salads and divide them up through the day. They didn't say what SORT of carbs did they? :D :D

Bacon and eggs with mushrooms

Lettuce tomato cucumber and feta cheese salad at lunch with cooked chicken.

Steak or a pork chop with garlic sauteed broccoli for tea!
