Ok, Ive been entering my daily foods at fitday.com and am coming in well under my carbs for the day (20, ~ day 11 in induction). But I am eating 2500 calories and it seems like alot of that is fat!! ACK, I never would have eaten this much fat before induction. Dr.A seems to advocate fat during induction, but my previous mind set says "NO!!!" Allowing fats in my diet gives me a better selection of foods, and that selection is what has kept me from cheating. I am well over my RDA for protein, and am taking supplements. I just dont know if I am doing this right. I dont feel informed enough, even after reading Dr.A's book. Im thinking of restarting induction very strictly, even though thus far I am feeling great (miss the cafeine a tad).

The main question here after my rambling is: Typically, how many total calories is appropriate to consume, and what portion of that should be fat calories(saturated)??

The non main question is: Is cheese evil?? hehe

general consensus for those of us who watch calories is 10-12 cals per pound to lose fat

do a little research (on this site) about how much protein you should be eating for your lean body mass and exercise activities. The RDA may not be sufficient.

low carb or no low carb, sat fat is still believed to make your cholesterol problems worse, so stay low under 20% and keep the fish oils up

cheese evil?...nothing is evil in moderation

Hiyah, Slamchopss :) Cute name !

As you're discovering, LC is not just about 'low carbs' it's also about High Fat. Your diet should comprise of anywhere between 60-80% fat - shocking at first, but it works. As you've also discovered the fat keeps you happy and satiated. This is also why it works so well :)

Here are two posts that should put a lot of your fears to rest:

Scared to eat Fat (http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=263355#post263355)

Saturated fat helps improve cholesterol profiles. (http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?p=1288847&highlight=hdl#post1288847)

As for cheese - it's not evil, it's just limited on Induction because some can over indulge- and because it's so good.

If you're eating 2500 calories and still losing, why mess with a good thing?

Cheers,
Nat

Hi Slamchopss,

I agree. If you are loosing, don't mess with it. If you find that later on your loss slows down, that is the time to reduce the calories.

Also, the guide of 10-12x your weight is based on your goal weight.

Wishing yo the best,
T.

Hi! The other folks provided good advice. I just want to add that the RDAs are only a *bare minimum* requirement to avoid a deficiency - they don't tell you what the *optimum* amount is.

Remember, all the evidence that "fat is bad" was collected in *high carb* diets. The rules of the game are totally different when you get carbs and insulin under control.

I agree totally with Kristine and suggest you read Dr. Atkins book. He discusses all of this in detail in his books. I did calorie counting when I was on a high carb/low fat diet. This WOE is totally different. Also read Natruska's posts!!! :agree: Aleka
