the daily mirror has once again got an article on low carb (atkins) diets.this time it is reporting on the effects it is having on other industries.
profits are down for slim fast by 23%
roche-makers of xenical down by16%
bakers and brewers profits are down by 10%
flour industry-profits down.
they are launching a counter attack. the new slogan for bread will be-use your loaf, have another slice.
potatoe council is spending 1 million pounds on their ad campaign-slogan-fab not fad.
there are plans for the potato, bread and rice industries to band together and hold a carb summit to devise a common strategy to counter the effect of atkins.however the meat industry is showing profits 11% not seen since before bse.
i think we have them worried, don,t you.

I'm really quite concerned will my will power hold out against slogans such as 'Use your loaf, have another slice' or 'Fab not Fad'!
Wonder why companys complain about lack of profits and then pour more money down the drain with stupid ads. I know there isn't a lot the potato industry can do about this but surely the best move for bread makers would be to produce a low carb bread.
Good to see all the top directors will be meeting up for a holiday, somewhere very exotic and expensive i would have thought...lol

Ther was an article in the Times on a similar line.
It is strange that even though Atkins has been going for 30 years and has been validated in recent research that the reporters still use the tags Fad, Craze, or Celebrity diet.

I'm sure the scientists could come up with a genetically modified potato with low levels of carbohydrate!

I keep trying to feel sorry for the poor food industry, but I just can't manage. What a shame, people are starting to eat more sensibly instead of stuffing themselves with what amounts to cow feed. Maybe the food companies will have to figure out how to serve their market.

Yes, it amazes me how Atkins has the 'fad' label. Yes, I am sure there are many who try it for a couple of weeks, like any other diet, but for the serious amongst us there is the realisation that this is the way to eat for life. I certainly eat much more healthy now and probably more so that 90% of the UK population.
Can't say I'm sorry for the bread or potato industry, but see the meat and fruit industry is gaining by it.
