I just bought the Nitro-Tech protein bars. They claim to have
290 calories and 35 grams of protien.
any supplements with a better ratio than this? 2 cans of plain
tuna fish has 300 calories and 65 grams of protein, but I cant
take that to work or it will stink up the office.
also anyone know where I can order this stuff in bulk
online to keep the cost down? Any brands to avoid? Im sure
many are bogus.

Most protein powders have a good ratio. If you can't easily
mix them in the office, mix them before you go to work and
bring them in a bottle.

I'd recommend the 5lb tub of a low cost whey powder (Prolab,
Optimum Nutrition, EAS). I use Prolab in Vanilla flavor, and
am very happy with it.
> Any brands to avoid? Im sure many are bogus.
Yeah, avoid muscletech (Nitrotech). Overpriced products, and
questionable business practices.

What about boneless skinless chicken breasts? Those can be
spiced and broiled in batches on weekends then frozen, and
they don't smell like the tuna does. ;-)
There are many brands of pure whey protien powder,
(personally, I like Vanilla Isopure) and it is pretty much
just pure protien so the best bang for your buck IMHO.
Just a couple of ideas for you...
I have recently discovered that HEB sells some pre-cooked,
pre-spiced boneless skinless chicken breasts that are
virtually fat free and VERY good! They are a bit pricey, but
cheaper than protien bars and all I have to do is to nuke them
for a minute. I sometimes have problems when I cook chicken
breast myself and having them come out dry. The pre-cooked
ones are grilled and very moist.

That really sucks or my math is off
290 calories for 35grams of protein comes out to .120grams of
protein per calorie.
The protein mix I use has 22gram of protein for 110 calories
or .2grams of protein per calorie: http://naturade.com/produc-

Did I read this correctly? Also, what is meant by
"questionable business practices."
I ask because I'm looking for suggestions on good tasting
MRP/Protein bars and fruit drinks (I posted a question a few
days ago about it but only received one response and I'm
hoping for more opinions to base my purchases on).
Thanks,

I'm a fan of liquid, pasteurized egg whites. A pint carton
costs $1.30 at my local Wal Mart, has 50 grams of protein
and zero fat. If you have refrigeration at work you can
bring that and your favorite fruit juice and mix it up as a
protein drink. Mixed with the juice, the egg whites don't
have a taste.

Yep. Actually, the main reason not to buy them is that they're
just plain overpriced.

Forget Muscletech for the powders. Even if you can accept
their business practices, their products are overpriced. Best
choice for powders is a cheap 5lb tub.
On the other hand, nearly all protein bars are quite
expensive, and Nitrotech are not that much more overpriced
than anyone else.

I've done that - egg whites and Welch's grape juice - but I
don't let anyone see.

Ouch. I'll make sure to steer clear of them.

Do it the other way around.

290/35 gives 8 calories per gram, meaning that it's not
pure protein.

291/22 gives 5 calories per gram.

Keep in mind that a large amount of those calories are from
glycerin, which is counted as a "carb", even though it isn't.
Besides the protein, there's about 9gm fat, 3gm carbs, and the
rest is glycerin.

so is glycerin good or bad? sounsd like a sugar? are the
shakes better than the bars? Bars are more filling.

Doh! Well, that is why I wrote "that really sucks OR my math

Good (compared to sugar).

Sugar alcohol.

Per gm protein, shakes are an order of magnitude cheaper. The
powder also contains a higher density of protein (or higher
ratio of protein to other macronutrients, even when we remove
glycerin from the equation)

It's not that your math was off, it was just more difficult to
compare the results with your method of computation.
