Hello Hellstile and Well done Jann, what a good idea. Good luck with it. Where are all the others???, hope they keep writing.
Just wanted to share this trick from last nites dinner we had attend. Didnt have the roll so when she brought them round I just said quietly to her "No thanks, I'm not having one". Waitress moved on, no one noticed. The entree came, had decided nothing there I could eat so said to DH I would get the drinks and disappeared off to the toilet and bar. When I got back everyone had finished. Main course okay and next came the brandy basket.Smashed into bits and ate the fruit and handed some over to DH. No one took any notice of the bits left on the plate even though I had not eaten any of it. I did work out a rough plan for day though didnt know the menu. Some situations, eg wedding you have to eat what's offered. (This has always been my good excuse)Anyone else got some tricks to "eating in public??" when diet converstion is innapropriate?

Luckily, I haven't been invited to a wedding in 20 years although I have one to go to next Sunday. I know there will be stuff I can eat because my nationality (I'm Ukrainian) uses lots of meat, fat, sour cream, butter, pickled stuff (no sugar), and has never to my knowledge done anything so drastic as doing a 1 plate with 3 or 4 items on it and that's it meal, so I know I'll find something to eat. In my culture, it would be insulting not to give people a choice, lol. However, I don't know what I would do if I couldn't eat any of it.

Thanks for the reply Hellistile. Starting to think I was the only one here... I went to the doctor yesterday and blood pressure down and everyone is very happy. Well I did say that I had lost weight and he asked how much..5 kgs in 5 weeks..."mmm he says, that is good, that is very good!" I went on about Atkins (he had never heard of) and he asked me about my meals...so there you go...we think that the doctors know all of this stuff.
Nice to hear of your Ukranian bakcground, wow you must have found some of the low carb stuff hard. I was very excited to find some low carb chocolate bars and just had to taste one on the drive home. Yuk!! Couldnt get the soap taste out of my mouth for ages. They are revolting!!! Well out to dinner with the girls, how I luv those nights and I am already planning to not order the brandy basket!! Chat soon, Ann

Just wanted to share that I'm down almost 6 1/2 lbs in the last two weeks. ~ lbs was water weight I was up but the other 4 1/2 is from taking dairy out of my diet. Am I ever excited!! 6 days free and 94 to go (and then another 80 days to make my 6 months).
Oaklady, good job on your dinner, how creative!.
Hi to Hellistile.
Others will probably come back to this thread after summer is over, maybe sooner.

I've been on track since yesterday evening. We have a long weekend here and I'm going to get into ketosis or bust. The ladies brought in a basket of donuts to the office this morning, but they haven't even tempted me. Even the smell makes me sick, and I keep thinking, "poison, poison, poison" brainwashing myself even though I know it's true.
Have a great weekend everyone.

Hello ladies!
I am back, briefly, after spending a whole bunch of time in the mountains with my granddaughter. Things are changing a lot lately, my daughter is moving back to the city (my dream come thru), and finally today, we found the perfect apartment for her and the little one. There were two available in the same tower, one just above the other, and while she was debating which one she wanted, we both exclaimed at the same time: 'why not take both?'... and so it was, I took the other apart. and gave my notice here just half an hour before the office closed for the long weekend... how crazy is that.... so now, we are both moving on August 1st, me directly under her, aha, and we are both so excited about it...
diet-wise, I am still on track, how incredible is that, but just losing minute amounts, nothing worth reporting really.
My doctor says it's hormonal, and I have been putting a progesterone cream on my arms for the last month. It helps with hot flashes, I just had them occasionally anyway so no big deal, but I feel very calm lately, and it might be that, who knows??
Congrats Ann and JAnn on your awesome losses, so envious, aha.... but happy for you both.
To my fellow Canadians, I wish a very happy Canada Day tomorrow. And to my American friends, a great 4th of July, coming soon!!!
Talk to you soon, friends.
JAnn

Fauve, that's wonderful about you and your DD getting apts soclose together. I also am dealing with the hormonal issues. I read your post and then realized that I was forgetting to use my cream! got to get back on it or this hot weather will send me into some serious hot flashing!

I just lost 6 lbs in a day!!!
Totally fake loss though. I got a bad stomach virus, and it emptied me of the last drop of fluid I had in my body... or so it seems, aha. I know I will regain them as soon as I can keep some water into me, but hey, how often can I say that I lost 6 lbs in a day, right!
Ok, back to bed for me... Enjoy your day, you all!

Hi everyone!
Is it too late to join this thread :q: I just found it and looked briefly thru some posts and think it is just what I need.
I am 56 and just came back to the forum after completing cancer treatment (chemo and radiation) for breast cancer and am sooooo happy to be at the other end of a long year.
Biggest problem is I was down to 181 and ate my way up to 224 during the past year. :o Of course the steriods I was given did not help but truth be told I did alot of stress eating. Lost about 12 lbs but am now bouncing with my weight which is normal for me.
I have fibromyalgia so my exercise has to be gentle. Right now I am doing step counting with a pedometer and adding 1000 steps per week until I walk about 70,000 a week. Plan to take yoga again in the fall.
Hope to read some of you nice people on this site.

Welcome Nancy!
I too have fibromyalgia, and was doing lots of walking. Unfortunately, last October I hurt my foot, probably because I was walking with old shoes, and I developed plantar fasciitis. It is not healing, and walking makes it worse. I am moving on August 1st in a new building, where there is a gym and an elliptical... and I plan to do my cardio on that from now on. Hopefully that will work!!!
Diet-wise, I do no-carbs, only protein and fat, and it works slowly, but it works.
On a personal note, I am 58, divorced, two daughters and a six year old granddaughter, and I am so happy about my life...
Hope to know you better soon,
Danielle

Hi Danielle!
So nice to meet you and altho I wish you didn't have fibro I know that you understand the challenges it can present.
Your new apartment and the gym sound wonderful and I hope it does not hurt your foot. Does it bother you to walk to do shopping and the like?
I would like to move up to lifting some free weights but am told not to lift more than 5 lbs. Actually my niece, the registered physical therapist tells me 2 lbs and more reps so we shall see.
I can't do no carbs even tho I would like to give it a try as I am type 2 diabetic and will go hypo even tho I am not on a drug that encourages more insulin production so I keep to the low glycemic veggies and such.
Right now I am not making the best food choices so plan on starting induction this Thursday for at least 2 weeks as it will at least help stop the cravings for sweets and the like.
Myself, I am married (again) for 6 years now. I was never blessed with children (sigh) but am very close to my niece and grandnieces so that does help. I do have 3 very spoiled cats and one very spoiled dog!
I have already beat my step goal for this week but I did start off slow as I am easing back into exercise after almost a year of doing pratically nothing except going in for treatments.
Thanks for responding!

Hey Nancy,
I just read your post, sorry, have not been on the computer lately, as I am deep deep into packing!!! I do move so often, I got it down to an art, lol, but still, it is lots of work. And of course, a great excuse to get off plan!!! Since the kitchen has been thoroughly cleaned, and all the pots and pans are packed, I am presently living on take out... you do the math!
Anyway.... I'll get back on plan sometime next week, when the new kitchen is operational...
And yes, yes, I do know the challenge of trying to do an efficient workout while avoiding the after-workout paralysis!!! Not easy. But we learn! It has been thirteen-fifteen years for me, I was diagnosed in 1993, though I was suffering for at least two years before I finally got a diagnosis.
I am so sorry that you have another huge challenge, the cancer challenge... but really glad that this awful year is over.
Take good care of yourself, Nancy.
Danielle
ps... had to laugh at your menagerie.... used to have one too... at one point, I had seven dogs, German Shepherd dogs no less... These last ten years, I had a wonderful little Yorkshire Terrier; but sadly, he died last year.

Oh Nancy, forgot to tell you; I just met a lady at the pool; she was doing deep water running... Have you heard of that? I didn't, it was totally new to me. She has a bad back, and it's the only exercise she can tolerated. She puts a belt around her waist to help her float, and she runs... in the water... extremely easy on the joints, and my foot!!! she learned about it at the YWCA, here in Vancouver, ozonated pool, no chlorine. She lost 25 lbs in 6 months, and she is really not big at all. Will have to look into that for sure!

Mon, Jul-31-06, 12:34
Hi Danielle,
I do NOT envy your packing that's for sure! That's exercise in itself!
That deep water running sounds very interesting!!! I wish we had a YMCA that was close by as I am sure that is one thing I could do.
Amazing, we were both diagnosised with FMS the same year. It did disable me enough that I can't work and I did work as a nurse for 24 years. I never had weight problems until FMS.
Yes, I do love my furry children. Puppy and I were both diagnosised this past week with Lyme's disease. Puppy had her routine check-up for heart worm and lyme and I got a bull's eye rash. Puppy and I are both on the same antibiotic just diferent doses.
Still doing OK on my step goal and surpassed it last week altho a few days with my g/f staying here with me put me off plan and up 4 lbs. Today is the first day of induction!

Is anyone there?
It has been a very stressful year.I have gained weight but have taken the plunge back to low carbing.Got back on Atkins Induction on Monday. It has been a good week.I feel better already.
I won't say much more since I don't know if anyone is still around or not.Would be nice to get this thread going once again but if that isn't possible I will understand.
I need the support that this forum gives so I had to come back even with a gain.
Hope to hear from some of you.I will keep checking back so hopefully we can get this thread going once again.Maybe I will see some of you on other areas of the forum.

Hi, Nancy, I'm still hanging around. I know it's hard to get back when you have a weight gain. I've been eating bread lately myself and am up 5 pounds. I'm going shopping today and hope to be back on induction tomorrow. I need to make some flax seed muffins and pork rind pancakes to get me off the bread.
Maybe some of the others will join in again.

Hi JAnn,
Really great to see a response from you already.Hope some of the others will join us.
As much as I didn't want to do it I changed my weight stat showing my weight now.I took my measurements again the other day.At least they aren't back to where I was when I first started low carbing 3 years ago.Don't ever want to get back to that size.
I am working hard to get this weight off and back to riding my stationary bike.Getting back to riding my bike is such a struggle.I am back to riding it 10-15 minutes at a time.Hard to believe I was once riding it for 30 minutes without stopping.
I want to wish you well as you get back on track.I went up 5 then it seemed like another 5 came on and then another 5.It can happen in no time and then you wonder what in the world happened.
Even though I have gained I have continued to eat the flax meal bread every morning.I really enjoy it and the fiber is good for me.Glad I didn't stray away from it.
Want to wish you well as you get back on track.

Hi Nancy and JAnn
Yep, I am still around, I too put on pounds since we last visited in the spring. I went back up to 218 from March to Sept. Right after Labour day I got serious again and am down to 207.5. At the end of August I saw a doctor that was filling in for my regular doc and he increased my thyroid meds and what a difference I feel so much better, more energetic etc so I think that has helped me to drop these pounds in the the last 5 weeks.
Nice to see both of you again and congratulations for getting back on plan, we can do it! I agree the support here is a great motivator. I started back recently visiting the forum, just reading but not participating.

How wonderful to see the two of you posting.
I had thought of posting about a month or so ago but hadn't seen anyone posting so I figured it was no use.So glad I took the plunge and posted today. It's so nice to see the responses from the three of you.
Jes.....I was so happy to see a post from you since we go back aways.I have been thinking about you in my absense and wondering how you were doing. So you have gone up some too. This has been the worse year for me since starting low carbing 3 1/2 years ago.Congratulations on losing the weight you had gained. How have you been?
Louloo..It's so nice to meet you.I believe you must have joined our thread when I was absent. Please tell me about yourself.
I will say a little about myself here so you won't have to go back and catch up.I started low carbing in January of 2003.I had lost 42 pounds but last year and this year I haven't done all that well.I am the mother of two grown daughters ages 30 and 29.They are both married. Our oldest daughter and her husband have blessed us with two grandchildren. Our grandson is now 5 1/2 and our granddaughter will be 2 on the 30th.
Hope we can keep this thread going once again.Hope everyone continues to check and let us know how you are doing.

Wow, this thread is still going. I posted here a few times, but I mentioned I wasn't quite 50 yet and I got a private message from someone telling me it was for 50 and over. Heck, I was going through menopause symptoms so bad back then I was looking to talk to others who had gone through it or were going through it. Well, I'm still not 50, but only 18 days away from it so I thought I'd come post again. I looked back a few pages and don't see the lady who said I shouldn't be in it until I'm 50.

Hi all
Nancy you are probably right.
I just recently retired :yay: after working 45 years. I am a mother of 2 sons, both are in their fourties and have 6 grandchildren ages 24 - 16.
I have been trying to lose this weight it seems like forever. I did lose 25 lbs a few years ago when I sarted Atkins, but of course put it back on again.
I'm currently doing a plan called EFGT(Eat Fat Get Thin) by Barry Groves. It is quite easy and quite satisfying. I have been off plan for a couple of weeks, as we have had company. They have gone and now it's time to get back on plan.
BBL Have a great day.

Nancy, basically it's a low carb plan eating 60-70% fat 10-15% carbs and 20-30%protien.
You can find out more on this site under low carb diet plans or on Barry Groves website www.second-opinions.co.
The book is an e-book. Very good read for the price.
It's snowing right now. We are supposed to get 2 inches today.

Nancy, so sorry to hear about your high level of stress this year. Hope it's all behind you now and this year is better!
I have had a fabulous summer of fun with my daughters and granddaughter, also lots of forbidden food like gelato and wine, and I sure can feel the effects on my waistline now that I have started wearing my fall clothes again!!!
Tomorrow is my birthday, it will be my last day of splurging... on Wednesday, I am back on LC... watch out for the falling weight!!!
Louloo, this EFGT Plan sounds fabulous. I always do so well on lots of fat and protein. Would you share with us some of your menu samples, just to give me some new ideas? I would really like that.
Have a fabulous day, you all.

Hi Nancy
How is it going with the stationery bike, keep at it, you’ll be back to 30 mins before you know it.
To catch up I haven’t done well on my exercising over the past months. I stopped swimming over the summer holidays (too many kids for me) and now here it is October and I haven’t got back to it. The stationery bike came to a complete halt after I took a fall on a crooked sidewalk and landed on my knees while I was in California at Easter, thank heavens I didn’t break any bones and my brother-in-law having to pull me upright must have been a sight to see! I still walk but with the knees being stiff and sore I am not as fast and don’t go as far. I really need to get back on track which would probably help the stiffness and soreness plus aid in weight loss. I’ve been busy over the last few weeks being co-driver for my granddaughter while she gets in her required hours driving (10 hrs day, 10hrs night and 10 hrs with snow on the ground) before she takes the road test. It’s not my favourite thing to do but her mother can’t do it as she hasn’t had her licence for 3 yrs yet.
I still follow Protein Power and my weigh-ins are Sunday. Last Sunday I was down half a pound to 207.
Hi JAnn
How did you make out getting back on induction this week? I just love coconut oil and use it all the time. How did the new hairstyle turn out?
Hi Danielle
Happy Birthday to you, hope you had a nice day. It’s good to hear you had a great summer with your family. You did settle in the city didn’t you?
Hi Louloo
Welcome to another Canadian. I’ve never spent too much time in Alberta but I do have a brother in Calgary and I’ve really enjoyed the trips through Alberta when I’ve gone to visit. I was born and grew up in Vancouver BC but have now lived in the Yukon for 35yrs. I was a single mother with 3 kids when I came here, found a job that I had until I took early retirement due to health reason 11 yrs ago. I live alone (happily) 2 of my children still live here as well as my 19 yr old granddaughter.
I checked out the website you mentioned, the EFGT plan looks very interesting and pretty straightforward to follow.
Hi and welcome back Cheryl
I hope you have a great 50th birthday in a couple of weeks! I see by our stats we are about the same in height and weight. I’ve been low carbing since Jan 2000, started with CALP (carbohydrate addicts life plan) after a year I switched to Atkins for about another year and have been on Protein Power since. I had tried the original Dr Atkins plan back in 1973 and lost a lot at that time however I did not realize the benefits of this way of eating and of course gained the weight back.
Have a good week everyone

Hi Jes,
Thank you for the birthday wishes; I had a wonderful time.
And yes, we are settled back in the city, my daughter and I. We have found 2 appartments in the same building, one just over the other one, and it is just like living in a big house, the little one going back and forth and enjoying us both, but at the same time, we have our privacy, and this is really the way we like it both. Perfect arrangement.
I just learned today that my mother had a stroke last night. She lives alone in Quebec City, and thank God, her friend called her last night to announce the birth of her second grandchild. When my mom did not answer the phone, very unusual, her friend went to check on her, and rushed her to the hospital. She is in ICU, but I was able to talk to her; her speech is slurred and she has lost most of her vision, she is terrified. I want to go there asap, and trying to figure out how on earth I gonna find the $1000 to pay for the plane ticket! Why is air travel so expensive any way?
Even in all the turmoil, I managed to stay on track. In fact, I ate very little today, just a chicken leg for lunch and some meat balls for dinner. Just to busy to eat I guess.
I need to check that EGFT plan tomorrow. Now, time for bed.
It is way past my bedtime!

Hi everyone. My new hairstyle looks very nice andhopefully it will be easy to care for. I didn't get any coconut oil at the HF store as they had just the 16 oz jar and it was expensive. I'm going to look online.
Sorry to hear about your mother, Fauve. Fortunately they've come a long way in treating stroke victims and she should get at least some of her vision and speech back after a few days.

Good Morning ladies
Fauve, sorry about your DM.
JAnn, that's hat I need to do. The grey is really starting to show through. I can't color it myself because of arthritis.
As far as menus go for the EFGT plan, as long as you keep the ratios right 60-70% fat, 10-15 % carbs and 20-30% protein, you should do OK. Similar to other plans, except the protein is reduced and the fat upped.
Maybe you could have 2 eggs, 3 bacon, cream in your coffee and butter for frying eggs and maybe 1/2 cup of blueberries. You could use MY PLAN on this site to work out your ratios.
Best thing is to buy the e-book and read what he has to say. I think it works out to about $10.50 CDN.
Jes nice to meet you too. I've never been to the Yukon, but it's on my list to do.
Take care BBL

Good Morning Ladies,
Weigh-in day for me. I am at 206.5 this morning, that is down 1/2 lb. I started again on Sept 10 at 218 and my short term goal is to reach onederland by Christmas which is 9 weeks from now--I gotta do it. I will start doing WATP1 (Leslie Sansone's Walk away the Pounds, 1 mile) Monday to Friday and get back to regular walking as well, then I will decide about the bike and swimming.

Good Morning Ladies,
Last Friday was my 56th birthday.Since I got off track I didn't feel worthy to post here so I waited till I was back on track.
I have set a mini goal to lose 20 pounds by January 1st so I need to stay on track if I am going to meet that goal.
Feels like winter here.Only 33.Too early to get so cold.We may even see some snow flurries.Would rather wait to see snow in November or December.
It's so great to see the posts here and to hear how everyone is doing.
Danielle..I am so sorry to hear about your mother. How is she doing?I love your living arrangement now.I know you are loving being so near your daughter and granddaughter. How old is your granddaughter now? I am thinking 6 since I believe she is a little older than my grandson who is now 5 1/2.I love watching him learn so much in kindergarten.Happy Belated Birthday. We share the same birthday week. How old are you now if you don't mind me asking? I turned 56.Now I need to remember that and forget about 55,lol.Please let us know how your mother is doing.
JAnn...So you are ducking too.Have you gotten back on Induction yet? How are you doing?

Jes...I am getting back to riding my bike slowly. It's going to take awhile to work back up to 30 minutes.I play some upbeat music to keep me going. My stationary bike is in our bedroom. Our TV in there broke so we need to get another one. Will get one after the holidays.I did much better when I had a TV on to keep me company while riding my bike.Congratulations on the weight you have lost in a little over a month.Good luck with WATP.I would love to do that since I have a few of those workout DVDs but the workout really bothers my right knee. The pounding bothers it a lot.
Hope everyone has a good Monday. Will try to do better with checking in this week.Since I plan on staying on track I will not feel the need to hide.

JAnn...So you are ducking too.Have you gotten back on Induction yet? How are you doing?
Nancy
I started induction last Thurs but it didn't last. Ate out over the weekend. I'm doing a cleanse right now so I need to get that routine down and then see if I can do induction. Most of the time I'm low carb anyway so it really isn't much of an adjustment. My big demons are mash potatoes and also rice and beans at a Mexican restaurant. Had both over the weekend.

Hi JAnn,
Really good to hear from you.I keep checking back to see if there are any posts.Good luck with your cleansing. How do you do the cleansing? I have never done that so was wondering how you do it.
So your big demons are mashed potatoes and the beans and rice at a Mexican restaurant.Mine this past week were cake and ice cream that I had for my birthday plus a few other desserts.
I am back on track and have done really well both yesterday and today.I take it one day at a time.
Danielle...I continue to think about your mother. How is she doing? My mother in law suffered a major stroke when she was only 59.She lived with us after that. She had to learn to walk and her speech never did come back.Hope your mother is doing better. My mother in law's stroke was back in 1977 when my youngest daughter was only 3 months old. There have been a lot of medical advances with treating strokes since then.
Hope others will check in and let us know how they are doing.
Nancy
Hope we hear from some of the others.

Hi Nancy, I'm sure that others will stop by.
I'm cleansing with a product called Dr. Natura's Colonix. My sister feels much better since doing it so I'm trying it. It is making it harder to do induction but I think that may more mental than anything. I'm still LCing but not induction.
I take 2 pills first thing in the a.m. and then some powder mixed in liquid about 20 minutes later and a cup of tea last thing at night. For the drink I mix the powder with water, a little yogurt, sweetener, and fruit extract. The yogurt isn't allowed on induction. Neither is the 2 corn tortillas I had for breakfast. The rest of the day will be legal.
Funny, but most of time I'm not into sweets. I would take rice and beans or nachos over dessert just about anytime.
Hi to Jes and Louloo.
Danielle, I hope your mother is improving and I hope we hear from you soon.
Just had a call from a friend and I will be leaving to take her to the dentist and I have GKs this afternoon so need to do some house childproofing.
Hope all have a good day!

Good Morning Ladies
I haven’t been here for awhile as my computer crashed on me about a week ago and I’ve worked on it everyday trying everything to get it running properly again. I would think I had found the problem then it was gone again, very frustating. I spent hour after hour until I could hardly remember what I had tried. Yesterday I had reached the point where I was about to give up and call in a professional and then last night I did something (no idea what) and it started working, I could access programs and e-mails etc. I spent some time catching up and then hoped it would still be working this morning so now here I am and all seems to be ok.
Last Sunday’s weigh in was down ½ pound to 206. I did do my Leslie Sansone tapes Mon thru Fri. I did WATP1 for 3 days and then I tried a new one of hers that I had bought some time ago, it is called Muscle Mile One. It is basically the same as her other 20 minute ones so it gives a bit of variety. I used 2lb weights but should be able to get back to 3lbs soon. I also got in at least 30 mins of walking daily.
I hope everyone is doing well

I had about a year with my computer acting up. I finally bought a new one and except for an occasional problem with the mouse it works great.
Good going on the weight loss and exercise. I know I need to exercise regularly. I have the same tapes, I just haven't been using them!!:(
I am actually up eight, yes I said EIGHT pounds for the month. Some of it is water, I know, but the rest is frustrating since although I was not doing induction I pretty much ate lc. I did work the last 2 days, manual labor for a demolition company so I have some very tired, sore muscles but ended up eating pizza yesterday.
I am going to start induction again Monday and hope I can get it down again. I would start today but DH wanted to go out for breakfast and I ate some hash browns. Tomorrow will not be a good dat to start so I will shop and get things prepared tomorrow for Sunday.

Good Morning Ladies
There was no change at my weigh in Sunday morning so at least there was no gain! I am getting plenty of exercise shovelling snow as its been coming down for days. What with the snow and cold (-21C or -5F) I will have to start walking again at the indoor track.
JAnn-good luck with getting back on induction and hopefully the manual labour worked for you as far as dropping a pound or two.

jes:wave:No weight loss yet, either. I'm not on induction right now. I broke a molar last week and can't chew anything, Everything has to be soft. Until I either figure out how to do induction without chewing meat or veggies or get the tooth fixed (about 5 weeks), I just have to wing it. I have a lot of LC protein drinks so I had one for breakfast. When I chew the jagged edge of the tooth bruises my tongue and it really hurts!

Hi Ladies..
I have been on the board since August when I came back to LCing after a year of being off the wagon. I think I posted somewhere in the TOFF forum, but no one else ever posted there, so I'm glad I spotted this thread tonight.
I started LCing last year and managed to lose 20 lbs. on my own. I then decided to take the Holidays off and then go back on my diet in January but then never did. I ended up gaining 11 of that 20 lbs. back before I'd had enough and decided to climb back on the SB wagon. That was in August. I have lost 12 lbs. so far and have 14 lbs. to go to reach my goal.
JAnn, sorry to hear about your tooth. I had an abcessed tooth this summer and I sympathize with you.

Hi Ladies,
Been really busy.I've been meaning to post but then I get sidetracked by other things.
The month of October is behind me.Glad to see it go since there were too many birthday celebrations then Halloween.
I am back on track since Sunday and haven't strayed off course. The scale is going down and my jeans are feeling more comfortable.I want to continue on this path till Thanksgiving.I plan on enjoying Thanksgiving and then get back on track again.
Jes...it was so good to see a post from you.Sorry to hear that your computer had messed it.I know from experience how upsetting it is to take your computer crash then back to like it is brand new.The worse thing is losing everything.I have my eating back on track so I need to add in some exercise.I've been getting plenty of walking in.I'd love to get a reliable pedometer. The ones that I have tried to use have not been all that reliable.Lots of snow to shovel already.Hopefully it will be at least another month or so before we get any measurable snow.
JAnn...sorry to hear about your broken molar.IT would be very hard to do Induction without chewing meat or vegetables.Good luck with trying to lose weight during this time.
Ladibug...so nice to have you join us.Please jump right in and tell us a little about ya.We always enjoy meeting new ladies and having them join us on our journeys to getting healthy.
Hope to do better with keeping in touch.

Just cook meat and veggies in water and use a food processor to make them into a puree, add some cream or butter and hey presto! cream of induction foods soup!!

Thanks for the commiseration Jes and Ladybug. The first few days were horrible but my tongue isn't quite so sensitive now so I can eat a little more.
You could make soups!
Just cook meat and veggies in water and use a food processor to make them into a puree, add some cream or butter and hey presto! cream of induction foods soup!! That is a great idea Elizellen! I guess my biggest problem is fresh veggies--I love them! This month I have GAINED 6 pounds so I have to do something drastic to get back down and LCing is the only thing I can stay even half way on. Also after eating some carbs I notice my hands are breaking out again.
When I was a young girl I had a lot of silver amalgam put in and now they are causing my teeth to break. Without dental insurance I've had to put replacing them off and now I'm paying for it. We plan on going to Mexico in about a month and I will have the work done there since $5000+ worth of work here will cost about $1200-1500 there and it is only a 4 hour drive.

I think I've posted here before but couldn't find it if I have. Haven't been visiting for a while because I was contrubuting to some fiorums here in Oz but they have such closed minds I have given up on them and will stick to here, ADBB and Aus Low carb in future.
I've got back to my Atkins very strictly and am down 4 kgs since October 21. I attribute most of it to my new walking regime. I found a stiff 5 km up hill and down dale circuit and do it every other mrorning, with a half circuit and weights (or the gym) on the other mornings. Sunday is rest day. There is a link with some pictures on my web site.
I'm being careful but not rabid with my food. Want to be under 100kgs for Christmas and I'm trying for 90 kgs by Australia Day (26 January). Don't know if I'll make that one but I'm giving it my best shot.

Hi Ladies,
Well here it is Sunday weigh in day, no loss again for the 2nd week in a row so I hope it's just a slow down after the 7 weeks of steady losses. I need to start using Fitday again. I eat mostly the same thing day after day but I find the carbs can creep in quickly if I start eye-balling it too much instead of measuring! So that's Plan A for next week.
Hi and welcome to Ladibug, Elizellen and Analog6, it's great to have more people here.

Hi ladies,
I am finally back after three weeks of pure hell. It's so good to be home again.
My mom is stable and she has recovered a bit of vision, but she will never be able to live alone again, so I have been packing up her things and have ended her lease. She is now in a long term care facility in Quebec, and I will try and see if I can have her transferred in an establishment here in Vancouver. The doctors won't let her travel for now though, so there is no choice but to leave her alone in Quebec. A very difficult decision, but there is no way I can move there and abandon my daughter and granddaughter... If only I could clone myself, one in Quebec, one in Vancouver... and one in Hawai for sure, for rest and relaxation!!!
I am totally off plan, of course; carbs seem to calm me down and help me cope. Or maybe, it's just a matter of habit.
Anyway, it's good to be back, and to be on the computer again, talking to all of you.

Hi Ladies,
Sure is nice to see all of the posts here.I was doing so well last week watching what I ate but the scales just would not go down.Guess I will just be happy to maintain here at the holiday time. Then after the holidays and the beginning of a new year I will watch really closely what I eat and up my exercise.
I want to welcome the new ladies.I would go back and check on the previous posts but then I would lose what I have already typed out.Guess I should go ahead and send this then read what I have missed then comment on it since this is on a new page.Be back shortly.

OK...I am caught up with the messages.Sure was nice hearing from everyone.Just wish I wasn't so discouraged since my weight isn't going down the way I would like.Seems like at my age(56) I will need to watch closely what I eat and add in daily exercise.

JAnn...way to go making it through your first day of Induction. How is your tooth feeling now?
Danielle....welcome home. How torn you must feel having to leave your mother in the long term care facility in Quebec. How far is that from you? My mother in law had a major stroke when she was only 59.She could no longer live by herself after that. She came to live with us.Our daughters were only 5 months old and 16 months old when my mother in law came to live with us.Needless to say I had my hands full with two small babies and my mother in law. Please keep in touch and let us know how you and your mother are doing.

Thanks Nancy.
It's a seven hour plane trip to get to Quebec City from here, quite a long and tiring trip. And my mom is not able to travel for the moment, and we don't know if she'll even be able to travel in the future. It is heart-breaking to hear her cry on the phone. I make a point of calling her twice a day, and so do my sisters, but she still feels alone.
To answer your previous post, quite a while ago, sorry; I just turned 59, yikes!, and my granddaughter turned 6 last May. She is now in grade I, in English, after having done Kindergarten in French. But she goes easily from one to the other.
I plan to get back to Induction any day now! It's great time to get back on track.

Thought I would pop in and introduce myself, joined this site in September, 2006, I'm a recycled low carber.
And oh my, how hard it is to lose this time around now that I'm over 50!! The scale did not move until I added in the dreaded exercise and cut back on my portions. It's going to be a long haul because I love a variety of food and refuse to limit myself to just meat and eggs. Can't do it. Period. Althought I have cut back on cheese.
Although I have several posts on this site and have started a journal, I'm getting kind of lonely even though I have posted in some random threads and journals. I feel invisible.
So, best wishes on your journey, like me, you are probably wanting this to be your last weight battle ever. :agree:

Hi everyone.
I live in Nebraska and am the mother of two daughters and grandmother to 4 boys and 1 girl. My oldest Grandson will be 10 tomorrow. (Yikes, that makes me feel very, very, old.) My youngest grandson turned one in October.
I started LCing in 2003 (Atkins) to lose some weight before my DD's wedding. I didn't do well with Atkins so I only stayed with it a few weeks. Since I like vegies and fruits so well, I switched over to SB last year and lost 20 lbs. on my own, weighing myself weekly at the Mall. I don't recall how many months it took me to lose it--but several anyway, 'cause I'm a very slow loser.
I stopped watching what I ate so I could enjoy the Holidays, fully expecting to go back to the SB woe after Christmas, but by then I was well on my way back to Sugar City. I am an admitted sweetaholic. :yum:
After gaining 11 lbs. back and having only 2 pairs of pants that I could wear to work, I decided it was time to go back to eating right. :help:
I just knew that I couldn't make myself do it alone again and that I needed some accountability. That's when I found this board in August. The weight is slowly going down and more importantly, my blood sugar has leveled off. My mother has Type 2 diabetes and I know I'm surely headed that way if I don't start taking care of myself.
As of today, I'm down to 112.8 lbs.(lost 14 lbs) and have lost 2" from bust; 3.5" from waist; 3" from hips; 1.5" from arms; 1" from neck; 1.5" from thighs; 2" from upper navel; 1.5" from lower navel. (Wow--I'd never subtracted my current measurements from my starting ones for a while. I did not realize that I've gone down so much.) I started with a size 14 jean in August and am now wearing a 10 or 8 depending on the brand.
I am thankful for this board and especially for the encouragement of everyone on the South Beach forum--as without their support I most certainly would not be where I am today.
Thanks for the Welcome....hope I didn't bore you with too many details. :D Anxious to get to know everyone here.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO EVERYONE.....

Hi Ladibug, nice to meet you.
I live in Vancouver, and like you, I have two daughters; but only one granddaughter; she turned 6 this last May. I would love to have more grandchildren but my daughters are both so career-oriented that I feel lucky to at least have this one!
I follow the carnivore way of eating, because meat is my favourite food and I am never hungry on this plan, but lately, I have turned to comfort foods to ease the stress. Not a good idea for sure, and I am slowly getting back on plan. I need to lose at least 40 lbs before being considered in a healthy range. I need help!
Looking forward to getting to know you better,

Hi, can I join you ladies? I am a 52 yr old wife and mother of two sons--one in grad school and one is a Jr in college.
MNLisaB--this is also my second go-round w/ LC and yes, it is tough---everything I've tried (and I've dieted all my life) has been little to no help. But once I got into perimenopause, it was next to impossible to lose, even with running and weight lifting and starving to death!
Well, I'm kinder to myself now and do yoga and walking, and eat LC (again) and even if I just find I FEEL better, that will be a pleasure, but weight loss would be a plus. I'm in Meno. now and feel so much better, but the weight remains a mystery---it just won't go anywhere.
I am loving it so much more this time around, and glad to have found this group of 50-something ladies, too!

Hello, everyone! I'm 61 (62 in February) and have been registered here for about a month, but I've never checked out this particular section before. :)
I have always had a tendency to gain weight (I was even fat as a little girl), and this is my second time as a low-carber.
For years, my doctor told me that I wasn't eating enough calories each day. She said I had to consume, at a very minimum, 1,000 calories/day to prevent my body from going into "starvation mode" and storing away as fat every bite I ate. So, that's what I do now. I keep my carbs around 30 gms/day, and my calories between 1,000 and 1,200/day.
There are ways to increase the volume of food you eat, without adding much in the way of carbs or calories. You definitely should not have to suffer hunger. The simplest thing to do is to eat 5, 6, or more tiny meals a day, so that your stomach is never completely empty. But I also use another technique. I mix a couple of tablespoonfuls of crumbled firm tofu with 4 oz of hamburger to create a 6 oz patty. I also add crumbled tofu to scrambled eggs, omelets, and other items. Tofu is very high in protein, and is an excellent way to boost your protein intake, which helps give people who follow the low-carb wol plenty of energy.
I realize that many people are hesitant to try tofu, since it really has no equivalent in "standard" American cuisine, but it really has little flavor of its own, aside from a very faint "nutty" sort of taste when raw. When used in cooking, it soaks up the juices and flavors of whatever you've added it to, to the extent that you'd never guess it was there.
Personally, I don't care for the taste of raw tofu. I don't know anyone who does, in fact, except perhaps, folks of Asian heritage. But once it has been cooked, it tastes like whatever it was mixed with. I have discovered that I like it fried in butter until it develops a nice golden crust. Then I slather it with butter and sugar-free syrup, and for me, it's as delicious as French toast! :yum:
I'm only offering this information as a suggestion. I've been low-carb (and low-calorie) for the past 25 months, and I've lost 135 pounds. I've very rarely been hungry.
Best wishes to you all! :)

I am having such a hard time right now with staying on plan. Stress level in my life has sky-rocketed since my mother's strokes, and I find myself in a no-win situation: whatever I do, I am letting someone down and I feel guilty. My mother needs me in Quebec, my granddaugter needs me here. I wish I could clone myself!
I need to find a good comfort food that has no carbs! Any idea??

Hello you goddesses, how is everyone? THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL STORY. RIGHT NOW I WISH I HAD SOME FRIENDLY FISHERMEN CUTTING MY LINES.
The Whale
If you read the front page story of the SF Chronicle, you would have read about a female humpback whale who had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines.
She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to
struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope
wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth.
A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farralone Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed an environmental group for help.
Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so
bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her ...
a very dangerous proposition.
One slap of the tail could kill a rescuer.
They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her.
When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous
circles.
She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged
them, pushed gently around-she thanked them. Some said it was the most
incredibly beautiful experience of their lives.
The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth says her eye was following him
the whole time, and he will never be the same.
May you, and all those you love, be so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you.
And, may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude.
I pass this on to you, my friends, in the same spirit.

Stopping in to say hello and give best wishes to all (naughty and nice)
This time of the year is so hectic, I don't like the empahsis on the material things, I much prefer the mood of the last week in December, when Christmas is over and folks are still in a holiday mood but not in a shopping frenzy.
Well, now that I'm over fifty (53) time for my first routine colonoscopy, scheduled for today. And oh what fun the prep was -NOt! I will lose a few lbs tho, not the most pleasant way to do it.
Have a great weekend!

Hello everyone. Just thought I'd pop in for a moment before I head to my sewing room to make the rest of my Christmas gifts. I know, I'm sorely late to be just getting started on the gifts, but working in retail makes it hard 'cause I'm always too tired to do anything but sit when I get home from work.
The words from one of my favorite Christmas songs is my wish for everyone:
Merry Christmas to all who may dwell here
Merry Christmas to even just one
May the joy of the season surround you
Merry Christmas with Love.

Thanks , I am so happy to be here ..I have lost 10 pounds but have lost 50 pounds off my shoulders in stress ..seems as though now that Iam doing something about my weight, Its a real load of the body stress wise ..I look at myself and tell myself Iam melting away and under there is A nice slim body begging to get out. And the poor soul is smothered by all that fat. So I have to help her get out . And when I do ask her forgiveness for treating her that way! :agree: thanks again!

We don't really weigh in. We just talk about things that are peculiar to our age group. With that said I wonder how many members are over 50 and are not subscribed to this thread. Are there things that we can say or do that would encourage us in our WOL?
I hope everyone has set their goals for this year. I know I have.
The two biggest things I'm excited about is changing plans from Atkins to PPLP. I have a real problem of staying so low on Atkins while traveling and also my energy level gets so low I can barely get out of bed. Now I can have up to 10 carbs at a meal.
The other thing that has me excited is the information on being a "supertaster" or "undertaster". I am an "undertaster" which means I tend to overeat because I don't get the full value of flavor from my food. It is something I'm going to concentrate on and see if that will help with my weight loss.
Okay, now to the bowl games!

I am over fifty, 52 to be exact, and am living proof that someone our age can work this plan with success. See my before and after photo gallery and read my success story.
I have lost 110 pounds and am maintaining.
I changed my way of eating March 2004, so I am approaching three years.

Hi Ladies!!
I'm kind of embarrassed for not posting here sooner. I'm 56 yrs old!! I still can't quite believe that I'm so old!! I feel like a kid. I started my weight loss journey, this time , at the age of 54.
OK, so now that I've gotten food handled and my weight to a reasonable place, I've just found a personal trainer that I like and will work out with. I've lost alot of weight but am soft...and wanna be a hard body like Galatia!!
You inspire me whenever I look at your pics!!
I'm pumping iron!! :D

Thank-you so much Judy. I hope you'll love weight training as much as I do. It's the glue that holds me together. When I lay off training for a while, I get mean.
I still can't quite believe that I'm so old!! I feel like a kid. I know the feeling! I don't feel 51, but I am loving this time of life. I was just posting in another thread about being an empty nester -- I gotta say, I just knew I'd fall apart when my sweet children left home...but, you know, I didn't. This is just another chapter in life....and it's a good one too. No guilty feelings for doing all the things I wanna do when I wanna do them. I love seeing the kids and grandkids when we can....they all live out of state, except one who is in college. Anyway... I look forward to talking to you all, and getting to know you better. :)

I have not been co nsistent with exercise. This past year I have had several surgeries that prohibited my exercising for six weeks at a crack, and I never got back into the swing of things. When I get the clearance from this current surgery I intend to go back to the gym.
I hate that I have paid for a three year membership and in that time have used less than a year of visits, and am in year three already.
When I first started out at 280 all I could do at the time was walk, and I was pretty good about doing that about five times a week. I had a friend who walked with me.
My friend used to work at home as an editor, but now has returned to the workforce fulltime, so there went the walking buddy.
Exercise is one of my resolutions.

Just came across this thread and it sounds interesting. I'm 50 and have been LC'ing since Jan 4th. I've lost 29 lbs thus far. I've started walking about 15 minutes a day. Hope to work up to 30 soon. Hope some others join the thread.

Hi everybody, I've made some steady, if slow progress, but it's not too tough anymore, just like second nature. It sure helps to have just me and DH in the house, more control over what food comes in. DDs come home from college now and then, I tend to eat too much when they are here, will need :help: when they are home in the summer.

Hi everyone. DH and I went to Mexico yesterday for some dental work. I just can't get around Mexican food and LCing so I've decided not to try since we make so few trips down there.
Actually it wouldn't have been so bad except for the chips. I did have a Coke since someone told me the Coke down there tastes better because they use sugar instead of corn syrup. Didn't taste any different to me and since I don't care for sodas it was :Puke:. Only had the one meal down there and a fruit flavored soda and the rest of the day I was good. Took some water and cheese but not across the border.
We're going back down Friday and then won't be going for a while. I've got to eat at a restaurant there where you sit out on the balcony ala Ernest Hemmingway style. I love it! Might even have a margarita this time!

I know. I feel like I'm at such an advantage when it comes to not being tempted. The only thing I'm tempted in is eating too much. And lately that has sure been a problem. I could eat all day long and never get filled up I think. http://forum.lowcarber.org/images/icons/icon8.gif Some days are better than others. What foods do y'all find keep you satisfied the longest?

Loooove your avatar- if that's you, no wonder you are always hungry, you are busy building muscle. (Me too, but not nearly as much as you). :agree:
I've always had a healthy appetite and some days I can eat nonstop- in my high low carb days it was b/c my body was always producing insulin, not sure what triggers a hunger jag these days...I am very careful to eat only protein during these times, sometimes I will have a rib or two of plain celery. I used fill the hunger with cheese- stalled me, so have cut way back on that.

I could eat my weight in chips and dip!! YUM!! :yum:The reason why your hungry is because you're eating too much protein and not enough fat. Drop your protein to under 100 grams per day and up your fat to above 100. See how you feel then.

Hi Lisa and JAnn. Yesterday I dropped my carbs by half of what I've been eating, and raised my fat, doubled what I've been eating....(my calories and proteins were way too high) anyway, I lost 1.2 pounds, so I am changing my eating to go with lower carbs/ higher fats. I had increased my carbs because I thought I needed higher carbs, lower fats for my weight training project....but it's just not working for me. Hopefully what I have planned now will do the trick. Thanks! :)
Thank-you for the compliment on my avatar Lisa. That picture was taken in September.

:nono: No thank-you! :D I'm pleased to say, I weighed 141 this morning. I sure hope this is not just a fluke. Another dip in the scales just to give me hope and then dash my hopes with another increase. That does get so frustrating.
Unfortunately I also injured myself yesterday. I have a little arthritis in my right wrist...I put it into a bad position yesterday, and I can barely use it now. I'm having a terrible time even typing. I've been putting all kinds of pain creams on it, but so far they aren't helping. http://forum.lowcarber.org/images/icons/icon9.gif Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Another question I wanted to ask. Since we're all in the same situation here with aging skin. Does anyone have any certain products or home remedies they just love for their skin? :)

I don't know what to do for your wrist but I know there are nurses and at least one doctor on this forum. Perhaps they will have a suggestion.
I use Oil of Olay. That with good genes and drinking water helps me. The rest I am not going to worry about.

The question I have is about finger nails and toe nails. I notice that my toe nails are starting to deform. I have noticed this in other older people. Is there anything I can do about it?
penelope
Thu, Mar-29-07, 10:31
My nails are getting ridges and my doctor told me it is a sign of aging.
I did a search and I came out with the info that it is a mal-absorption of nutrients and in most cases it is low iron. I used to cook in cast iron everyday but this last year I used a Teflon pan so my daily supply of iron disappeared.
am now taking some multivitamins for 50 Plus and I will know in three month if those are enough.
JAnn

I was hoping the coconut oil or perhaps increasing some vitamin would help. Please let us know if those vitamins help.

If anyone has found any products in particular that are better than others for crape-like skin. I didn't have this crapy skin when I was younger and haven't found a product yet that makes much difference in it. My arms and legs always look like they need to be lotioned. I read somewhere on this board where DMAE added to your face cream is suppose to help with not having saggy skin. So naturally I put the stuff in everything.
I've also heard where if you take Cod Liver Oil you won't have wrinkles. A little late for not having them, but I take it now. Maybe there won't be as many with time. It's also good for lots of other stuff.
Talking about fingernails. Mine have gotten really brittle.

Just came across this exercise suggested for seniors, to build muscle
strength in the arms and shoulders. It seems so easy, so I thought I'd
pass it on to some of my friends here:
The article suggested doing it three days a week. Begin by standing on
a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With
a 5-lb potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your
sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute,
then relax. Each day, you'll find that you can hold this position for
just a bit longer.
After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato sacks. Then 50-lb
potato sacks. Eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato
sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute.
(I'm at this level.)
After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each of the sacks.

I've heard that Biotin works great for nails and hair....but I haven't tried it yet and want to. My nails suck!!
Your skin in your phtots does not show its being crape like.....you look good to me but I'm sure it feels that way to you. I use a scrub brush in the shower and then cream, cream, cream and more cream........ugh, I hate getting old!! I have to say that since I eat this way, my skin is glowing..that is where its not sagging!! ;)

I had lost 35 pounds last year low carbing. I have since put on about 20 pounds. I'm here to join you in losing again. Yes, I believe this forum will help keep me focused and motivated. I am also a wife of over 30 years, three children 30, 27, 24 and three grand children 7, 5, and 3. Looking forward to losing BIG with you. I do remember using this forum often during the time I lost the 35 pounds. The weight came off rather quickly this time last year.

Well, have fun hiding eggs, or whatever you do for tradition. I'm making a prime rib and roast pork. I wanted to make it with blueberry and hazelnuts a la Buca di Beppo, :yum: but I waited til the last minute to do shopping, and came home without fresh blueberries.
Have fun!!
