Heelp I'm really struggling at the moment. Things that didn't even interest me a couple of weeks ago, are really yelling out "eat me, eat me" now. There was a big hunk of choccy cake in the fridge (with ALL the trimmings) I ignored its enticements for 4 days, then last night a big chunk of it jumped in my face. I can't throw it out, this isn't my house. I live-in during the week. There's a cupboard full of chocolates and lollies downstairs and they're yelling at me. They're there for the kids who apparently need a constant supply of them. Sorry, lollies are candy.
Anyway I've developed this theory and just wondered what others thought. I think that as my body gets thinner than it's been in years it sends out really strong feed me messages so that it can get back to what it's used to. What do you think? Sort of like a rubber band in reverse, you shrink it but it keeps trying to boing back to its accustomed shape.
I'm determined to beat it though, I mean who's in charge here?

feather,
I've noticed that too....and I've also noticed that the cravings come before a big drop in weight, so hang in there.

Here's what I've noticed. If I have those things in the house, I literally think that when I look at them, I start to think of eating them, so my body so nicely puts out a little shot of insulin so I'll be ready for it when it comes. Hence the incredible cravings, and once you start, oh my, then the path becomes a nicely paved road. Just don't look.

I take one a day with lunch, and another whenever a craving hits me. It helps.

Also wondering if you might have some food sensitivities? Check the CAD forum for the allergy/addiction post--something to think about. When I eat foods I'm sensitive to, they trigger the urge to binge, even though they themselves may be Atkins-safe.

I know the feeling of food reaching out a grabbing me!

It sounds like you are hanging in there though, especially in a place where you don't control what food is in the house! how hard that must be!

it might also be that your body weight is now under your current set point and it will take awhile for your body to adjust and get a new set point. The theory about set point is that it is the weight that our bodies want to keep, and they will speed up or slow down metabolism to maintain that point. It can be adjusted, however it takes awhile for it to change.

I don't have this problem, but I know that many people do. I've been trying to figure out why this is an issue for some people, but not for others. I live in a house that has lots of carbohydrates -- neither my husband nor my kids is low carbing -- and I almost never have any cravings for them. In my case, perhaps it is because I really like the food I am eating now. I never had a big sweet tooth and I only ate a lot of bread and pasta because I believed the food pyramid and thought that is what I should eat to be healthy. Therefore, giving that stuff up wasn't that difficult for me as soon as I figured out it was the cause of my health problems, rather than the solution to my health problems. The only thing I have trouble staying away from is fruit, and now that it is summer and we are getting such good fresh stuff I am allowing myself two servings of fruit a day (I was eating one serving a day in the winter). I'll cut back on the fruit in the fall.

Feather,

When you get those cravings, try doing some strenuous exercise. It should help. Exercising decreases appetite. Also you could try getting out of the house.

Hi feather,
I wish I knew why some days are so easy and others are so hard. For me I think a lot of it is hormonal, and I just have certain days of the month that I could eat anything in sight and the food calls my name. Other days I have to almost remind myself to eat.

One thing I have done is made a list of things I can do instead of binge. These are things that I like that will distract me from reaching for that cake or candy. Then when I get that urge I look at the list and do one of them. It usually helps if I do it. The hardest part for me is to break that mind-food connection. If you quit thinking about it, the craving WILL go away in awhile. Writing down and reviewing your goals is another thing that helps me and keeps me focused.

Good luck!

when I get the urge to munch on something I cant have, I go get a glass of water, or a piece of low carb gum. The gum helps satisify the need to chew and i eventually forget all about it.

Hang in there! You're doing great!

Hi Feather

Ask them to move the candy to a different cupboard and ask them not to tell you where it is. I'm a NZ ex-pat living in LA with my hubbie and right now I ave a 1kg bag of Pineapple Lumps in my freezer bc I can't eat them but I wont throw them out bc their like gold. This way if I HAVE to have one I can pull one out and let it thaw so I know I wont go overboard.
