I figured this forum would be the best place to ask this q. Where do you buy grass-fed beef? Is there a national chain that sells it fresh, or do I need to order it frozen, in quantity? I live in eastern Pennsylvania. Please don't tell me to hunt for it myself.

Thanks!

I'd like to know that myself...I live in NW (Escambia/Santa Rosa) Florida, but spend alot of time in SE (Broward) Florida also

Please don't tell me to hunt for it myself.

Thanks!

Hunting Season don't open 'till September/October [here in Florida]...So, you can't legally hunt anything 'cept Hogs and some small game...and you can only hunt those (out of season) on your own land. Don't think my landlord would take to kindly to be shooting animals from the porch in front of my apartment.

cc, I found some! Do you have a Fresh Fields/Whole Foods near you? They carry several cuts of grass fed beef. You'll pay through the nose, though. We're trying some tonight (and eating canned tuna the rest of the week).

Not here in Escambia...But, we have a few down in Broward. I'm gonna be heading down that way in a couple weeks anyways. So, I guess I'll have to check out their meat counter.

Here in Kansas City there are dozens of farms all around us that raise grass-fed animals... bison, elk, deer, cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, turkey, eggs, etc. I have a list of over 40 places just within 3 hours or less drive. If I kick that to 5 hours, the list goes up to over 150! Raising grass-fed animals is becoming very popular in southwest Missouri especially. However, there are places all over the US that raise grass-fed animals. Here are some links to help you find them.

http://www.eatwild.com/

http://www.heall.com/resource/food/

http://www.texasgrassfedbeef.com/

and, of course if you go to http://www.google.com/ (or any other search engine) you can put in (name of your state) (grass fed) (bison) (deer) etc. and you might be surprised at what you find.

You have to have a freezer if you want to buy in bulk - which is the only way to afford this meat over "regular" meat. I have a pretty small freezer (an upright, frost-free) that holds about 500 lbs of food. It is smaller than my fridge (which is not big at all). This freezer cost me about $300.00 brand new, and will save me much more than that on just one bulk meat purchase. I plan on saving on the shipping (which is a huge part of the expense) by researching only farms that I can drive to and pick the meat up myself. If I purchase 1/8 of an animal (1/4 for smaller animals) then I can both save money, and not have the meat sit for too long, and have a variety of grass-fed animals to eat. This may end up costing a bit more than buying at the supermarket. But, I really don't think cancer treatments are that cheap! :agree:

Good Luck.

Thanks for your responses. I did find grass fed beef at Whole Foods, and will probably buy it there, since I'd only eat very small quantities. Must be a woman thing--I prefer the berries, myself. :)

Also, if you're stuck for the real thing, ordinary lamb is usually from livestock given very little feed (at least in the UK and NZ) so is one of the closest to real/totally grass-fed.

We're in Philadelphia. There are a number of grass farmers who come to the farmer's markets in the city. I could probably find you some phone numbers for them if you send me a pm. Landisdale is pretty big, so is Keystone. I can't remember if Meadow Run farm has beef or only pork. There is also an outfit called Backyard Bison (http://www.backyardbison.com/). All the grass-fed beef I've had around here tastes funny (Wifey calls it "ass-fed beef"), but the bison was the best thing I'd ever tasted. Some of the farmers will deliver to your house if you get a significant order (half a hog or a quarter of a beef) - We used to get our pork from Forrest Acres Farm this way, and he also delivers beef from Jake Zook. All the farmers sell it frozen, but if you go to the farmer's market you can buy a small package to try it out.

Everyone is going to hate me, but I just recently got an in to join the Polyface Farm buying club since I am within a 4-hour drive of the farm. Joel Salatin salad bar beef, here I come! I'm hoping it tastes better than the other grassfed meat I've been able to get ahold of, because so far everything I've experienced is more akin to that "ass-fed" meat of which capmikee speaks. :p

Uh, guys? This is a very old thread, and the OP has not visited the forum in nearly 4 years...
