Ok, here's the deal. As a general rule, meat grosses me out. The idea of it, not the reality on my plate-that's pretty yummy. But the fact remains that I am a big-time animal lover and I have no doubt that if I could survive as a thin vegetarian, I would. Today in the paper I was reading an article about "Sexy Vegetarians" and the actor Josh Hartnett mentioned something gross and meat-related that he says put him off meat forever. I never should have read that. I was put off meat for a month when Moby said it was "foul". So now I am having a crisis. As it is, I only eat skinless, boneless chicken breast, very well done filet mignon, and boneless center-cut pork chops. I won't eat any meat that looks like what it once was-no bones!! I have no problem preparing these things but I won't eat them.
Could someone please offer me some non-PETA, non-vegan words of comfort so that I can get back on with the business of losing weight? I know when I reach goal I can probably maintain with green veggies and lots of stir-fried tofu, but for now it's got to be a meatfest.
Sorry for such a bizarre request. I hope some of you can understand how I feel. I think it all stems from the traumatic day I realized "chicken" on the table was the same as "chicken" in my grandfather's coop. The horror, the horror. (I was about 3 years old)
I need to be a little more Ted Nugent and a little less Moby.

Hi there
Try this section of this site, http://forum.lowcarber.org/forumdisplay.php?f=109 its where those doing Atkins or LC the vegetarian way hang out... Its located in the other LC plans section and they should be able to give you lots of ideas about how to do this vegetarian if you want to go that way...
I think that there is no point forcing yourself to eat something if you don't want to do it, so if you prefer to go veggie then go veggie. :D
Good luck and hope this helps some
Fiona :D

How about eggs? If you can handle eggs you can have them boiled/fried/poached/devilled not to mention omelettes, frittatas and lc french toast (check the recipe section).
How about fish - larger species such as tuna - make tuna salad/tuna melts.
Stir fry's are an efficient way of hiding meat, and it's chopped small.
Perhaps a LC/high protein shake mix to get your protein in - there's lots of flavoured and unflavoured varieties on the market.
Cheese is another form of protein as well and comes in several varieties to keep it interesting.
How about cold cuts/deli meats - they usually have a nominal carb count but can get the protein into you that we require.
Let me know if any of these ideas are possible and perhaps I can help you work things out (I'm a professional problem solver )

ps my relatives could never figure out why I was terrifed to use an outhouse after they laughingly shared the story of my older cousin being bitten in the bum while using one when he was little - stuff that affects a kids lasts a long time if we let it - don't let it keep you from losing!

HI. I have been veggie in the past, and I used to live with a whole group of people in a coop house in Ann ARbor, and we had veggie/carnie wars almost, when it came to food.
I don't know if this will help, however there was a column in the local paper called ... THe name just slipped away, but the guy who wrote it make fun of all sorts of new agey and trendy things. He did a piece about cows that were taught to meditate and then voluntarily went into samahdi (conscious death) to give humans their meat to eat. It was funny at the time.
I don't know if this helps, but it might.
Also, you could thank the spirit of the animal for sharing its bounty with you. then again, this might just make things worse. and like one of the posts above said, you could stick with primarily veggie options.
I wonder if talking to that little child part of yourself and imagine her telling you how she felt when she realized what she was eating, you might be able to help that part of yourself let go of the trauma, especially if you liked the chickens as pets or friends. Children are so wonderously aware of the life around them, and a lot of times adults forget that and do a lot of damage without meaning too.
Oops, sorry  I think I just stumbled over one of my soapboxes,
Rena
