I am new to the Atkins Way of Life. I am a Hindu Vegetarian. So I would prefer to eat around my foods so that I can change the way I eat for the rest of my life rather than try to make this into a short-term lose-weight gimmick.
I am wondering where I can get my protein intake from? I cannot eat eggs in the evening also. So today I had a little bit of lentils(Indian dal) and my carb count went to 75. Where can I control the carb intake and what can I substitute? If I eat tofu and other non-Indian proteins there is a greater likely hood that I will stop eating all proteins. Is it then okay to eat the pulses just because I am getting the proteins. Please HELP Wiser Heads!! I am waiting to see what I can make for tomorrow's dinner :-(( I have included my journal if you would like to take a look.

Hi there Ashmads,

We have several successful vegetarian members here. If you go to our Vegetarian forum (click here), (http://forum.lowcarber.org/forumdisplay.php?f=109) you'll find some ideas that will help.
Do read Karen's "sticky" at the top - Tips for Vegetarian Low Carbers, where she gives some good ideas for vegetarian sources of protein.

Ashmads, I don't know how to help, but I have to say from looking at your fitday that "Bread, puri or poori (Indian puffed bread), whole wheat, other than 100% or NS as to 100%, filled with coconut, fried" is a huge no-no.

There are a lot of meat substitutes that might suit your needs. In terms of the cultural differences, don't lots of dishes have tofu and other low carb protein? Or possibly eating more cheese for protein may help?

Lots of veggie protein choices, but you will probably have to get creative. Best to you! :)

Hi Skamito: Thanks but the poori does not really apply. I have two rotis made of whole wheat flour and olive oil or ghee. They are not stuffed with anything. Also, Indians rarely eat tofu. While I can eat that during induction my problem is longterm. I have to be able to substitute all the various products with similar products that we would use. SInce I could not find too many to help me, I started keeping a rigorous journal to help any other newbies who may follow along. Thnaks Rosebud for your advice. I am going to keep up my induction and so far seem to be very happy with the weight loss as well as the inches decreasing. I will keep asking you for more help as I start stalling :-)

No cheese, right? You can get a lot of protein from nuts and vegetables. Squash is good, eggplant, zuchinni, summer squash. Mushrooms are good, snow peas, spinich, bok choy, artichokes, asparagus. Pumpkin seeds and squash seeds, sunflower seeds.

Nuts: cashews, almonds, that type of thing. Some of these may be higher in carbs than you want, but remember to subtract out the fiber.

I know that some strict Atkins followers will suggest that these food aren't allowed on induction, etc. In my opinion, as long as you are eating lower carb you will be healthier, the pounds may not melt off, but you will feel better, and in the long run that's what matters most.
