Hi everyone-

I'm also about 5 days into doing the Mari Windsor Pilates tape
(my friend swears by it - she lost two waist inches in two
weeks doing it only every other day), but I haven't had much
with it here yet. (I'm 190, 6ft and in my mid-30s). I'm also
about a week into the induction phase of Atkins, which I
recall working better last time after I started some cardio
machine training.

I just joined a gym, and want to know any recommendations for
the best exercise equipment I should use for maximum
short-term weight loss in the next nine days (plus how long
to use it, intensity, etc.) in conjunction with Atkins & my
daily 20-min. pilates workout tape. (I'm going on a beach
vacation then)

There are several excercise options out there - what's the
best?

Thanks,
J.

Do the Tour De France. You will lose weight.

Losing weight is calories consumed versus calories expended.
(Exception: temporary weight loss in Atkins which derives from
water loss, which you regain immediately you start eating
carbs again - typically a few pounds).

The best way to expend calories is whole body exercises -
walking, running, cycling, swimming. You know you are burning
calories if your heart rate increases; the longer period you
increase it for, the more weight you are losing. Doing weights
doesn't burn a lot of calories - you need full on cardio.

The more intensely you exercise, the faster rate you burn
calories, but the harder it is to sustain for a long period of
time. Walking briskly for one hour (say 7 kms/hr) will burn
more calories than running (say 10kms/hr) for 30 minutes. Of
course, running will make you fitter a lot quicker than
walking, but that's not what you are asking.

So work out how long per day you are prepared to spend
exercising, and then pick one or more cardio exercises you
like, and work pretty as much as hard as you can for the time
you have chosen.

By the way, each gram of fat removed requires an expenditure
of 9 Cals. So 9 lbs = 4 kilos = 36,000 Calories. That's a
L-O-N-G time on a stairmaster! Hence somebody else's
suggestion concerning the Tour de France.

Good luck. And next time think about this 9 weeks away from
your vacation, not 9 days - a pound a week is feasible; a
pound a day is not.
