How do I do it...?

hi Shirley ...

These small images are called Avatars. They are displayed below your username on all posts that you make. There are two kinds of avatars: those provided by the administrator and those that you upload yourself from your computer.

To add an avatar to your username .... click on 'User CP' (top left of the green menu bar), then select 'Edit Avitar' from the menu on the left.

You can select one of the cute avatar icons from the database, or if you have your own picture in a file on your computer, you can use that, by selecting Custom Avatar at the bottom. Use the Browse menu to find your file, and be sure that "yes" is selected in the Custom Avatar section. Then click Submit, and voilą ... :)

(note, your pic can't be any larger than 100 x 100 pixels, or 20 Kb, whichever is largest ... so you might need to use an image editor to shrink it down if necessary)

Hi Shirley,

Simply click on teh "Profile" icon on top right, which gives you access to change all your options/profile fields etc.

For pics, go to Edit Options, and select the avatar option at the bottom.

There's a bit of a problem when submitting a custom avatar ... You MUST make sure that the "yes" option is checked before you click Submit ... It has a nasty habit of UNchecking itself after you browse your computer and choose your file, so you must be sure that "yes" is highlighted beside the "use custom avatar" option.

If you don't, the profile will simply use the first avatar that's in the database HERE, which is this:http://forum.lowcarber.org/images/avatars/alien.gifDoreen

Doreen, I have been trying to attach a photo for weeks. Everytime I try I am told that the pic is too big. It has to be 100x100 pixles. I am trying many different ones and can't get it to work. Any help is appreciated.

As you can see I checked a little further and got resizer software and it worked. Thanks anyway.

doreen T
Fri, Apr-26-02, 22:51
If you right-click on your picture, a menu box will pop up. Click on Properties ... you'll see the size and dimensions listed. The avatar pic can't be any larger than 20KB (20,000 bytes) or 100 x 100 pixels.

You need to use an image editor to shrink the picture and/or change the resolution (number of pixels per inch). Your scanner or printer likely came with a simple editor, also there's Windows Paint, which you'll find in your Accessories folder from Startup > Programs. The help files will guide you through.

Hmm .. I click on your profile, and get 7 posts, which is accurate at this point in time. Try hitting the Refresh button in your browser ... that will make sure the most current profile page is loaded for your browsing session.

hi yvette,

Post a reply to this ...

Below the message box where you type your post, you'll see the Attach file option. Find the file on your computer using the Browse button (eg - C:\My Documents\My Pictures\mypic..jpeg .... or wherever it is :))

Submit the post.

Then we can help to resize and put it in your profile for you :)

please help, myphoto says it's only 18 MB but the program keeps telling me it's too big, and I've tryed to follow your directions, I don't even know how to get it here as an attachment so you could put it on for me. how do I do that. chris

doreen T
Tue, Jan-28-03, 19:52
hi chris,

The avatar photo can't be bigger than 20Kb OR 100 x 100 pixels. So it seems the file size is ok, but the dimensions are too big.

er ... you did mean that the file is 18 Kb right?? Not 18 Mb .. that would be a mighty big picture ;)

To attach the picture, you need to post a reply here. Then, look below the box where you type your message, you'll see where it says "Attach File" .. use the Browse box to find the picture file in your C: drive, and then submit your post. We can make adjustments and put it in your profile for you. Just make sure you actually see the file path appear in the attachment box before you submit ..

hth,

Doreen

The picture needed to be shrunk .. it was something like 310 x 250 pixels. Can't remember the exact number, but bigger than 100 x 100 for sure ;) Don't know if you have photo editing software, but I use Adobe Photodeluxe (came with my scanner, and I love it) Anyhoooo, the original photo was 200 pixels per inch, so I reduced that to 100 pixels per inch. Then I shrunk it to 100 x 85 pixels.

You can right-click on the pic with your mouse, then check Properties .. it will give the file size and pixel dimensions.

Any graphics program will do it, like MS-Pain(t) and the like. Just change the image to fit 100x100 pixels size. I use and recommend this free software from:

What is the type of the icon? Try to save it as a jpeg or gif file.

hi Anne,

Wa'il remedied the custom avatar problem last night (er, this morning for you ;)). It should be working fine now.

There are two ways to call up the avatar screen .. from the avatar button at the bottom of the Options page in your user control panel (which is the same as before), and also there is now a separate Avatar button on the menu bar on your main control panel page.

You should see your current avatar pictured in the top panel, at the right. Below that is the list of forum avatars, then below that you should see the custom avatar options. Make sure the "yes" option is highlighted before you submit.

Note: the Profile Picture is not the same as an avatar. Profile Pics will show on your member profile page only.

hth,

Doreen

Doreen,

I am trying to change my Avatar. The custom pic from my computer is only 3.82 KB or 16, 384 bytes (I "clipped" a bit from a bigger picture) but I keep being told that the image is too large. What gives?

My original Avatar was 6.98 KB so I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.

I have also been having problems trying to attach pictures to my journal and gave up months ago as I kept being told that the images were too large.

PLEASE HELP :)

doreen T
Wed, Jul-16-03, 23:39
hi Bobbie,

Avatars are restricted to 20 kb file size and no more than 100 x 100 pixels. Must be jpg or gif file.

Attachments are restricted to 100 kb file size, and images can be no more than 400 x 400 pixels. Must be bmp doc gif jpe jpeg jpg pdf png psd txt zip file.

Jpg and gif files are the most "economical" for file size. If you're trying to attach a scanned photo, chances are that it's in bmp (bitmap) format which is typically a much larger file. Many photo editors are able to convert your pics to jpeg format.

Let me know if you're still having troubles .. :rose:

Yep,

I figured out that the properties shown when a file is clicked on was different than when I opened the file and then checked the properties.

So I managed the avatar but still can't attache a pic to my journal. Again, it's telling me the image is too large even though the properties of the image is telling me it's only 200 something by 399 pixels.

And I am trying to attach jpegs. Just can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I've done it before (ages ago) but somehow I can't seem to do it now.

I hope it's okay if I suggest anyone needing help making pictures smaller go to ......... http://www.trivista.com/products/asmallerimage/ and try their product. If you like it, you can buy it for $15, I think. Of course you can do the same thing with all sorts of graphics software, but I thought this little program was handy to have around.

I, of course, am not associated with them nor their product... just trying to be neighborly like we Texans tend to do!

Hello,

This may sound like an odd question, especially since i'm not even sure how to ask. i added a couple of pictures as attachments to one of my journal entries. Since i don't see a way to add pictures as a "permanent" part of my signature, i was trying to attach these same pictures to another post. But i receive the message, "You have already attached this file to a post. If you need to refer to this file it can be found in this thread: kidee's New Beginnings (http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=127298)".

Maybe i misunderstand how pictures work. :) And without using a URL, IS there a way to attach the same picture, each time you post. Thanks!!

Your avatar looks great!

To post a picture in your signature, just go to "edit signature" in UserCP. You will see from there that there is a restriction on picture size.

Once you have a suitable pic you wish to add, just put [img*]the URL of your pic[/img*]
